- Pop up is one of the most common mistakes, but most of the surfers don't want to pay attention to that even more if you have been surfing for a long time, people think that's for beginners, the truth is that pop up and feet positioning is one of the most important foundations and that could be the reason why you are not improving. Here is a test to find out if you are doing the right pop up or not and some drills to improve.

I've been surfing for 30 years and have never had anybody explain feet positioning on the pop-up as well. Thanks for the tips!
Happy to heard that!!! Have a great session!!! 🙏🙏
instablaster.
A great tutorial🤙🏼🌈 Thank you brother🎸 What are the surfing possibilities in Salvador?
Background music gets in the way,...Just friendly advice tone it down or have none, people want instructions and advice which you give well, music is ok for surf footage and elevators....
Also, no vocal audio on the right side. So you have to have left earphones bud in to listen
Thank you, Marcelo!
One of the most useful videos out here on the internet!
Thankyou.
Been an aussie surfer since 6, now 51.
Broke my C3/C4 in my neck surfing after doing it for decades. Was paralyzed in the water, have a titanium plate and 4 X 14mm screws in my spine.Learnt to walk again and after 2.5yrs made it back....love surfing again.
Your videos are very professional and I am learning from you as you seem to be a good teacher 😃.The breathing you mentioned is very important. Subscribed.
💮🏵️💗🏄🏄🏄🤟🤟🤟🇦🇺
Wow very inspiring story!! So happy you are surfing again! Keep surfing life the way you are, we fall down and stand up stronger! God bless!
By far the best explanation of the pop up , great job
Awesome thank you. Focusing on fundamentals is so important. I was making rookie mistakes and making bad habits and then I realized I need to go back to fundamentals. It's a big difference.
Very informative video, Marcelo you are a great at explaining these tips. Im going to put them to the test for sure
Really nice tips. Nobody thinks to talk about these tips and so important ! I understand many thing thanks to you! Take you !!!
Thank you sensei, a lot of info in short video structurized, right to the point. Subscribed
Best tutorial ever! Big thanks !
This was excellent , after 30 years of surfing this has been a game changer / you presented this very well / especially with the board template on the mat.
Muchas gracias! Me ha ayudado un montón, ya lo he puesto en práctica!
So so good!!! Thanks very much!!!! Lot of info no teacher has told me ever! 🌊 greetings from Buenos Aires!
Thanks brother!!!! The best pop up and feet position VDO so far!!!! Can’t wait for the next tutorial!!!!
Thank brother!! Next tutorial coming soon! Have a great day!
Will be surfing tomorrow. I usually watch how to videos before going to get at least a bit of confidence 😂 I'll definitely apply this tomorrow! One of the great videos I've seen so far!
Great explanation on technique, and foot positioning. Very helpful. Thanks
Excellent tutorial mate, well done 🙏🏼
I watched several videos but i can say that this video gave me so much information out positioning of the legs. Excellent content, thank you
Great explanation of foot positioning! Thank you
Great fundamentals 😄 thank you so much 😄
Very underrated lesson. It’s taken me literally 20 years to realise my back foot wasn’t far enough back. I grew up in fat weak waves so back foot was always up to get speed and flow.
Back foot gotta be on the heal grip to do hi-Po moves.
Never to late!! Go big!! Good vibes!
Thank you so much, so productive!
This is just the best ever video I have watched on posiioning of the feet. This has helped me progressso much. Wish you would make some more like this. Thanks, Lea from Australia😊
Excellent! Thank you!
I had some issues with the pop up. This video helps a lot!
This was REALLY helpful. Thank you!
You explained this better than any other video I've seen!
Your tip about the back foot is the game change for me. I was trying to turn longboard, bending it exactly like you showed til I lose my balance and fall out the board. I'll try to put my back foot more closer to the tail to improve the board turns. Thank you very much, Marcelo!
God bless Marcos!
Gracias Marcelo!!
Helped me correct a lot of errors in my pop up/posture/drive (:
Great video Marcelo thanks. Where did you get the mat from?
Excellent, really good tutorial!
Muy buen tutorial!! Enhorabuena y mil gracias!!
Saludos.
Thank you brother!
IM A BEGINNER AND THIS WAS SO HELPFUL THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
Best pop up video on CZcams well done
Fantastic video! Well explained and some stuff I'd never considered. Keep it up
Thanks!! Good vibes
Thanks for the tips, can't wait for more content! I recently started learning how to surf and love how you teach it as a sport with a wholistic approach. Working on the fundamentals in order to improve is what I teach my students in Lacrosse as well so it's awesome to hear it from someone else. I'm making it a personal goal to go to El Salvador and get coached by you, my mom is from El Salvador and as a child I could never visit because she said it was too dangerous. Now that I'm older the beautiful beaches, meeting my family, and getting some surfing lessons sounds way too good to miss. Until then I'll be following your videos and using them to learn!
Bryant Hernandez thanks you very much for your comment!! I’ll be posting more soon! I been working on that for a few month and we are getting ready to launch! So good to hear to have familia here and it sound like the perfect trip haha! Happy to share and tech you in person when you come! Have a great day
great video very clear and motivating
Thanks man helped me so much best pop up video
Nice tips thanks man!!!
i really love the pictures on the wall!! thanks for the lesson..i gonna try tomorrow!
the painting? thanks !! Go surf!!
muchas gracias, excelente explicación.
Excelente vídeo. Surfeo hace 8 años pero a mis 44 años cada vez me cuesta más el pop up. Y sobre todo de back side siendo regular.
Estaría bueno q hagas un vídeo de back side. Graxias
De las mejores explicaciones que he visto... A practicar se ha dicho!. Gracias 🤙
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Great film Marcelo ( inhale, exhale) cheers mate
Thank you bro!! Needed this rn 😊🙏🏼🌊🤙🏼✨☘️🌈✨
Great video helped heaps
Thanks bro, really helpfull!
excellent tutorial
Great! Thank you
Thank you its amazing!! can you make a video on how to surf a longboard?
The knees position to back foot landing position reference is something I have never heard before. Thanks for sharing that! The hands too far forward is another key element of the pop up that very few online coaches teach, and it is crucial to land your front foot in the center of the string. If you have no room for you leg, your front foot lands on the heel side most of the times.
Very very good techniques taught in this video, I will definitely share it around.
But please, fix the sound. Music is too loud and I can barely hear you.
Nice job man! You got a new subscriber!
Thanks brother!!! Really apréciate!
this just changed my life. well. okay. but it helped a lot! thanks so much
you are a good teacher. thanks!
🙏 thank you!!
Very good lesson. I've had huge issues with pearling after stepping down to a smaller board. I am finally getting the hang of it after realizing my body position and weight is too far forward and consciously pop-up a lot further back. Having snowboarded my whole life the natural stance I pop-up into is to have the center of gravity in the middle of the board, with my feet position almost the same distance between the nose and the front foot, as the tail and the back foot.
When I first started surfing I mostly used 65-80l boards and got into a bad habit to pop-up into forward heavy position but being so stable it worked anyways. Going down to a 50l board has been a harsh but good lesson.
thank you!! enjoy the journey!!
Amazing video man thank you so much for these tips!! For someone that doesn‘t live close to the ocean, these types of exercises are absolutely vital!! But of course they are vital for any stoked surfer out there hehe 😄🤙
🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you!
Thanks for the details
Star Ma your welcome 🙏
Legend, thank you
Amazing video
Probably the best pop up video on youtube :)
Stoke! Great video, thank you! 🤙🏻
Stoked!!
Thanks, Marcelo
do you know where cxcan I get one of the matt with the board drawing as you show on the video?
Where can I find this practice mat?? Learned a lot from this video!
Such valuable info, so psyched to try this all out. Bravo for the info. Thank you 🙏
Marcelo thanks for this. Where do you get those sick practice mats in the vid?
Cool video, very informative. Where can i find the mat tho?
Yo great video. I'm surfing on rivers in the rocky mtns N America and focusing on my pop up at the start of my 2nd season here. Yo where do you get one of those mats with the surf board diagram on it?
Great tutorial! Spot on information, especially about the knee and where the back foot lands. :)
Thanks!!!
Great video where can I find that mat you were using?
Awesome Vid
Cheers mate
Shot bru. Good foot positioning tutorial
Very helpful
Brilliant 🤙🏄♂️
Hola Marcelo mucha calidad de este Tutorial me puedes decir que marca es el mate que usas para entrenar Vale un saludo desde Lima Peru
Best pop up video
great tips, i look forward to more of them.. peace out from vanisle
THANKS
good stuff!
Excelente! 👍👍
thanks mate. popup always an issue for me. some sessions i nail it every time. but most of the time its a issue . one problem i have is i arch up for too long before poping up. i don't even know why i do it
Great vid…But what mechanics are you using to scoop your feet underneath you? Are you pushing off of one knee, both knees or just driving your front knee through as fast as you can?
Great video bud, subscribed
Thanks bro!!
Buenisimo video 🤙
Hey, thanks for your videos. I have a question regarding tip of a toe and ankle position. In 8:40 I can see you land on your toes on your back leg not on your whole sole of a foot. Right now I am training inside so I am wondering if it is not better to land directly on a whole sole instead of toes. I think in water if you jump right on your feet you have more stability. Or? Thanks
Awesome thxxx...
ThanksMC
Great summary on that topic! Where did you get your mat?
It’s a Pro Trainer Surf mat: protrainersurf.com
Great Video amigo saludos desde Galveston Texas
Gracias hermano!! Buenas vibras!!
Nice vid! Avoid dragging your feet is another point, that'll slow you down, get your caught up in the lip and primary reason for taking off late.
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Very good lesson :) takes years to learn this listen to Marcelo hes epic!
Donde consigues esa alfombra
great stuff! Would you say the „jump“ is better than the „chicken wing technique“? lower-end intermediate from Portugal here ;)
thank you bro
Southwest Island your 🙏 welcome
Great video. But, your explaining on a short board. Being a 6'0 tall Intermediate surfer, I ride a mid length 6'6. So, I always stand up on the middle of the board.
I understand how to go forward to catch more waves and have stability. But, still don't understand how to pop up very far back...
Can you provide a link to the mat your using in this video? Thanks!
Thanks for the tips, subscribed! My only suggestion is to turn the music volume down - it was a bit difficult to hear your instructions with the music being at about the same volume as your voice.
Thanks 🙏
Andrei you are 100percent correct. all action sports producers think they need music behind everything. its distracting and not needed
and its only on the left side :D
Percebi que é uma ótima orientação mesmo sem falar inglês. Só falta uma tradução em português.
Nice video !
Roberto Menendez thank you 🙏
Next video basic and advance Puddle and glide timing please. Thumbs up.
Hello! Where can we buy the mat that appears on the miniature of the vid?
