Bill Jordan told me he carried a 1917 when he was in the Marines in the second world war he modified it a shorter barrel an action job, served him well.

IMO smith and Wesson needs to come out with a 6.5” 44 magnum, fixed sight N Frame as an homage to the triple lock in their Classic line. A 6.5” Triple Lock is one of the sexiest revolvers they ever madeX

Great video! I got a commercial 1917 a few years back. I sent S&W the serial number and they sent me a letter saying it was produced in the 1920s (can't remember the exact year off the top of my head). It's a pretty cool revolver! If you guys ever talk about the hand ejectors again you could mention the 1917 he used in Raiders of the Lost Ark (and the hi-power used).

A triple lock target model in either 44 special or 45 colt is my holy grail gun.

@@PearceBrothersGearGuide that and a post war model 21 or Pre 21 in 44 special with a 6.5” barrel. There have been occasions I’ve seen pre and post model 21s go for more money than a shooter grade British marked triple lock.

@@PearceBrothersGearGuide the most gut twisting thing I ever saw though was in a news article about a buy back in some big city and one of the photos showed a side shot of a some of the guns they had “gotten off the streets” and one them them was a either a triple lock target model or a third model hand ejector target. It had a shrouded ejector rod and the bore was too large to have been a 38/44 Outdoorsman.

@Ben_not_10 that's terrible! And they probably only gave then like 200 for it 🤦‍♂️

Casually passes the registered magnum across the table like it was a common ruger gp. Can't wait for more information I didn't know about the rifling machinery from sharps. I have a newer model 21 44 special 4 inch that I put a set of herrets trooper Jordan stocks on. And i have a Brazilian model 1917. The smiths are light smooth and balanced nicely. The colt new service /1917 are just bigger heavier and robust. And i feel like they recoil heavier than the Smith. I would love to have model 27 eventually. I wonder if the popularity of the registered magnum will fade as more younger people start collecting because I feel like it's something that you have to be in the know to appreciate.

Thanks! You can't go wrong with a pre war Smith and Wesson! It might be a fun video to compare the 1917 to the Colt new service. Hopefully the Registered Magnum gets less desirable but we will see. Both of the ones we used in the video belong to our Dad and we would like to have some of our own haha

Wait only 2,000 commercial guns? Just picked up a nickeled 1917 for $400. No US Property marks anywhere on the gun. One of my gunsmiths looked up the number and said it’s from 1926. Put another $100 into a new set of service grips, lanyard loop, and the action was slightly outta time.
Honestly though I’m a little perplexed why the 1917 wasn’t a bigger success in the interwar period. It’s not K frame M&P light but it’s very well balanced and much easier than any of the 38 caliber N frames. The star/moon clips make reloading much faster and easier. You’d have ammo compatibility with the government and could purchase surplus guns and parts from government stores as well as ammo for training. With standard 230 grain loads it’s not that much more difficult to shoot or to train to shoot than a typical K frame or the Colt Official Police. Like did smith just promote the K frame over the 1917 or was it just too awkward a revolver for its time?

Good question. My take on this is that between the wars there were a lot of Surplus 1917 Revolvers on the market that were surplused out after ww1. Another factor is that the Great Depression really affected new gun sales in the 30s.
