- I finally start off a basics tutorial series of Europa Universalis IV by Paradox Interactive. While I am no expert at this game, I do play it a lot for fun. In this series, I aim to make some of the games many mechanics a little easier for the new player to understand. I am playing as Castile and have the Conquest of Paradise, Wealth of Nations and Res Publica DLC installed.

Thanks for Watching! - Hry
I've started the game so many times, but quit almost instantly, because couldn't figure out how to play it. But this tutorial seems really helpful.
Finally! an EU4 tutorial that is actually organized and makes sense. THANK YOU
Excellent introduction! So glad there's someone teaching EUIV who is quick, informative, and isn't some sort of obnoxious youtube personality. I'm definitely subscribing to your channel.
So quick! (40 minutes)
still a good guide tho
are you're saying he was going rather slow or are you just deliberately misreading?
I'm just an asshole
You have a new Subscriber. You made the best Europa Universalis IV tutorials, informative, explained step by step, not rushing into it and so on. You are a legend.
Thanks for your introduction! I always wanted to get into the game (I've owned it for months) But could never get past all the different mechanics. Still getting on the learning curve but your video definitely is helping!
That was a well done tutorial, made a complicated game seem rather clear. :) Thank you!
Thank you so much for taking the time to produce this tutorial....I am new to the game and this information is invaluable...Hats off.
I am so glad you're doing this! I found your channel through your let's learn civ 5 and was really enjoying it/finding it super helpful, but I did find myself thinking that I wished you would do one on eu4 because it's a game that I'm much more interested in. so thanks a lot! :] really enjoy your channel as a whole btw
Thanks very much. And while I am hardly brilliant at EU4, I hope I can pass on enough info about the game play to at least get people started and be able to enjoy the game.
Very informative. Thanks for getting me started. I was used to playing HOI 3 and starting to play this game was hard to get started. You clear up a lot of confusion. Can't wait to start playing now.
Great video. I just bought this game and will dig in after watching a few more of your awesome videos. Thank you for doing them!
Have to watch 5 hours of tutorials to understand the mechanics, hope I end up liking the game or I'll be salty haha
oh and thanks for the tutorials! The ones in game are pretty tedious.
There is a lot of detail to learn, but you don't need all of it. Once you pick up enough to learn the basic mechanics and be able to play, you'll automatically pick up the rest in time. It soon becomes addictive.
UnstableVoltage good to know thanks :) I'll keep trying
by far the best tutorial i found. have a sub bro! good job!
excellent tutorial now I can actually start to play without getting my butt kicked or going broke, thanks for taking the time to do this.
This is really an excellent introductory video, and I'm sure you've helped a lot of new players get their first start on the game. Keep up the good work! Just a small nit-pick: I did notice a few minor errors that have nothing to do with DLC or patch version... for instance, when you first pointed at Granada while in Diplomatic map-mode and said that the cross-hatching represents friendly relations. in fact, the cross-hatching indicates that Granada holds land that you consider to be rightfully yours (Castillian core territory, under foreign control). But that's just a quibble... you are doing a great job with this series of videos.
To be fair, I was a lot less experienced when I made this series. Since then, I have made a more up to date series focused on the Common Sense DLC (though it does cover the base game basics).
Just bought the game (about a week ago). I've perused a few videos on EU4 but this one has been the most informative so far in terms of raw starting.
Thanks.
Aron Willington A few things have changed since I made this video (mainly around combat and movement), so you might want to check out the newer series at some point. It's done in a different style, and might seem a little dry - but it should still prove useful.
UnstableVoltage Will do that. Cheers :)
Picked up EU4 in the Black Friday Sale and was completely lost despite playing other Paradox games. You've made it accessible with this video series and I'm really starting to enjoy EU4; thank you!!
It really is a great an addictive game. I think a lot of people miss out on it because they pick it up, play for a few hours and feel totally lost, then never play again. You really do need to invest a lot of time to really understand how it works - but in my opinion, it is well worth it!
Great tutorial. Very clear and useful. Thanks a lot for sharing!
Just got the game on steam sale and only because you made me interested in the game. Thank you for the help
Thinking about buying it right now. What's your impression? Is it necessary to buy it with DLCs right from the start?
Well, I'm not convinced this game is my cup of tea. I don't find it so engaging...happy for those that do though. Watched your video to decide whether or not to get this humble bundle with most of the DLCs. Thanks for the tutorial!
Hey pal just wanna say a big thanks for taking the time and uploading such a great informative tutorial. This was the exact type of introduction i was looking for. You sir are the man !!
I have also downloaded Crusader Kings 2, should i play Europa first or it does not really matter ?
+Daniel Woolley they're very different games in the way that they play. EU4 is probably easier to get into.
OH this is awesome, I just picked the game up. This is a very good tutorial. Thanks so much!

Great video, I look forward to the next. The idea of playing a strategy game that lasts as long (or longer) than an RPG is interesting to me. I might watch a little more and eventually experiment/try it out myself.
You really do make your own fate in this game. As there are no "turns" as such, the pace of play comes down to a number of factors. You could run the game at it's highest speed; stay pretty much neutral with everyone, and have very little interaction. It's when you're fighting 3 different wars all around the world, and have to slow the game right down and constantly pause to micro-manage everything. I think that's the main issue - there's so much micro-management in EU4. Not that that's a bad thing. It's just not for everyone. I personally enjoy it.
Finally a tutorial that helped me much!
that you said about lucky nations is false what lucky nations historical actually does is giving historicly succesfull nations a boost to stuff like trade power.
and random ofcourse gives this to random nations etc.
You know, its kind of a bad thing when the tutorial labeled "Getting started" lasts for 40 minutes... XD
+Mark “The Ficanator” Burgess It's a very complex game. Getting started takes a long time. And as it's a video aimed at beginners, I try to take my time to explain core concepts thoroughly.
yeah, i'm just joking. Great tutorial!
+UnstableVoltage Complex or not, it'd be helpful if you could find your way back into a menu once you've left it, like for example chosing rivals, chose two and wanted a third but no dice, cannot find, hidden deep in Assburger Mountain.
I... I honestly do not know what the fuck you meant with that comment.
+Dissident101 You hit F1 to bring up the main window. Then press 2 to open the diplomacy tab. You set your rivals in the top left corner - the little shields where it says Rivals. If you have a free rival slot, then one of the shields will be divided diagonally red/black. Just left click it and pick a rival.
The menus do take some getting used to. I've got hundreds of hours in this game, and still sometimes I have to look for stuff in the menus. It also doesn't help that DLC/patches often add/change menu items.
Thanks! Helped a lot!!
Lol, I've been playing Crusader Kings for a while now, and this just looks like child's play. It seems a lot easier since the last time I played it. Cheers for the video by the way.
Very good video and you didn't go too fast. Thumbs up!
Great tutorial. Thank you.
Wow that's really awesome, thanks !! :)
Excellent
who in the actual hell would ever thumbs-down this?
This is awesome.
Like me :P
Good job
i got this free from Steam but there's so much info, steep learning curve imo.
I agree. There is a lot to learn. It's one of those games where once you pick up the basics, it isn't as difficult as it seems. Of course, there's a huge difference between knowing the basics well enough to play the game and have fun (like I do), and actually knowing how all of the mechanics, modifiers and behind the scenes number crunching works. Some people are really good at this game; I don't claim to be. I do have loads of fun playing it however, and the more I play, the more I learn.
I think if you like strategy games, and you're willing to put some time into learning it, then it will become very rewarding - and one of those games you find yourself playing until 4am.
UnstableVoltage
thanks for the vid nonetheless. Hopefully i can refer to it as i go along.
Rocky Martin How on earth did you get this for free from Steam?
moepskie weekend freebie, when the weekend passes they offer it at around 75% discount. Cool deal. The freebie is a teaser. They do this with other games as well all the time.
Rocky Martin Ah yeah, I'm aware of that. I thought you got it 100% for free :p
great job.
nice job
Hey Unstable I just bought the game today and am completing the tutorial uh I can't seem to move my army where it is telling me to and I am having some trouble Thanks
great vid.
Been playing for years and did not know right clicking a nation brought up the diplomacy screen.
Really good tutorial, i'm just trying to get into this from Civ. Problem i'm having is i'm following your tutorial as closely as i can (somethings are different) but the button to "protect trade" on my navies is not there, its not even there but greyed out. I just can't find it. Am i doing something dumb or have they moved thi since this video? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
+Mia Cassinelli Hi there. It changed in the last DLC patch. You need to select you navy, and click the missions button in the bottom left of the navy window. You should see Protect Trade in there.
+UnstableVoltage Oh thanks so much for the fast reply! Legend. Thanks again for doing this series.
+Mia Cassinelli It does get a little confusing when they keep changing stuff around. Even if you don't own all of the DLCs it keeps changing. Check my Common Sense tutorial. It's more up to date.
+UnstableVoltage yeah it does I bought the same dlcs as you to try and minimise it. Ok I will.
UnstableVoltage I'm assuming they also changed were to change the national focus because I can't find it based in the video
Hi Unstable. Thanks for this tutorial to this VERY hard to learn game. I tried to mimic your game, but unfortunately a lot of things are totally different! Like I got a much older (or newer) version of the game. Most annoying was that the notifications were very different from yours and I can't pick missions. I only have "decissions". There is some kind of tree though in which you can see some sort of missions/decissions, but you can't pick them. And no mission like "Make an alliance with Portugal". Real bummer.
It’s one of the reasons I stopped making tutorials for this. There’s a DLC or a patch which changes things every few months. On top of that, most of the DLCs work independently, so I could make a tutorial for all DLC enabled or none enabled. It would be far to impractical to try and cover all of the possible combinations. I don’t even remember which mechanics belong to which expansions anymore.
@@UnstableVoltage a real pitty. It seems like such an interesting game but it's much too complicated. And it lacks a good ingame tutorial. Oh well back to Old World and Civ6 I guess
I keep only getting the improve prestige, reconquista and papal realtions for my quests... any help?
Juliek94 Sometime you do keep getting the same rubbish missions over and over, until a certain date, or a certain condition is met. Sometimes you just have to take one and cancel it, or fail it (or maybe even complete it). You will get other quests as the game goes in.
he sounds like an intelligent pyrocincal
"who" are you playing as? I like to "role play" as a character and my actions are influenced by that characters traits. Can i do that here ?
In EU4 you play more as a nation than as an individual. The nation does have a leader (who dies and gets replaced), and they do have very few limited traits. Not really enough to roleplay IMO. They're mainly just a source of stats/monarch points. If you want to roleplay, you're far better off with Crusader Kings 2.
HI
anyone can help me?
i do not knew how reduce local autonomy less than 75%
I just purchased this game on the recent steam sale. I didn't buy the common sense DLC because I wanted to see if I enjoyed it first. Is the common sense DLC necessary now?
+samuelh31992 You don't need to have it. You don't technically need any of the DLCs, as a lot of the stuff is in the free patches. But certain elements are only available if you have DLCs. Of course, it's fairly impossible to make different tutorials to cover every combination of DLCs a player may have - so I tend to just focus on the latest DLC.
+UnstableVoltage Okay cool, thanks for the quick response.
If you do another series, can you play as the inca and colonize south america and maybe the pacific? Nobody ever plays as them.
It may be something that I do. However, I intend for this to be more tutorial. Playthroughs of EU4 take forever, and I am far from one of the best players around.
cheers
Does anynone know how to get CB Easyest way.
+Almir Hujdur in the early game, use the fabricate claim option against a neighbour (you can only do it to someone you have a border with, or share a sea zone with).
things where nice and easy back then. today everything is over complicated
i like this already cause i could not find the play button cause of steam-link richt under hahaha im such as dumb ass noob sometime
i am dumb for sure aint gonna learn the game to bad looks cool but i do not have this much time:(
I want to play this game. then i realized that there's 5 hours of tutorials, and this guy is supposedly "concise"...
yeah... i'm gonna try a different game XD...but props to you for making videos on this!
