    The plot point of Mars needing their own native population is actually kinda interesting. Especially if they factor in Mars's planetary conditions as a problem point with earth-born biology. Hell, sold as a medical and political need for Mars to be a real stand-alone world that could have been a pretty good direction for the story to follow.

    So it was kind of explained in the movie. Earth didn't want Mars breaking away so they came up with the robot wombs... I would say in order to hide them they made them seem very human. So when Harrison Ford shows up and asks them their are you human questions .. well they have a history, their neighbors remember them growing up. If just one day some lady showed up and did nothing but make babies she would stand out. The movie goes on to say that the robots would trigger a war with Earth and Mars wasn't ready for that so they hunted down the robots to destroy them. So in short.. our secret plan worked but it was discovered and now we need to shut it down before anyone on Earth truly figures out whats happened.

    I agree, if they had framed the martian government as being more corrupt, framed the creation of beings like this as a crime, and framed the murders of these beings as a further crime to cover up what they've done the film would have been more resonate. Feminists wouldn't be mad at robots "usurping their biological duty" because most of them think that the idea that women exist to make babies is garbage. They would, however, take issue with creating people with the soul intention of making them have babies, thus why the government would try to cover it up.

  • @AnonimusQualquer
    @AnonimusQualquer Před 9 lety +22

    Feminism aside, artificial wombs would partially solve the problem of abortion if you're able to pass the unwanted fetus to another womb. It would raise other problems, like increasing the amount of children in orphanages though, but it could solve that by shipping all those children to mars, it seems.

    • @GenaTrius
      @GenaTrius Před 9 lety +10

      AnonimusQualquer Artificial wombs would open up some interesting possibilities, but the logistics and consequential ethics of actually developing them make it unlikely that they'll be made any time soon. Prenatal development is a very "sensitive to initial conditions" scenario, so trying to grow humans in an experimental artificial womb would very likely result in a lot of horrible miscarriages. Even if there was plenty of animal testing first.

    • @AnonimusQualquer
      @AnonimusQualquer Před 9 lety +3

      Gena Trius High rate of miscarriages doesn't sound like a big problem, it sounds just like a normal prenatal development with its 10-25% of miscarriage chances (and the porcentages is on the recognized preganacies, some women miscarriage without even realizing they were pregnant). Chemical pregnancies may account for 50-75% of all miscarriages and no-one complains about their low chance of success.
      I agree that artificial wombs would bring many discussions, but I doubt miscarriage would be the worst side-effect. Afterall, I commented that artificial womb would be a better option for a woman with an unwanted pregnancy, it's better to risk the art. womb rather than abortion, right? However, I can see art. wombs bringing other problems, like a manufactory of babys for something like organs (there are even books and films about this theme).
      Or, like in this Armitage III, just send those children to conolize Mars.

      +Mitsuki Horenake
      I never saw it as really THAT anti-feminist.
      I mean it's driven primarily by a strong female character, who despite her "baby making" original purpose, plays as a cop and a hero. She may be visual objectifiable, but she has the respect of most of the male characters. The other thirds all are women who have respectable careers (though predominantly in the arts) and prestige. Their "babymaking" wasn't the main characterization in the plot.
      The reason for the anti-cyborg sentiments is because the predominantly female earth (which has a female president) is making a deal with the primarily male mars (with a male president) to unite the two worlds, under the banner of "Two Worlds, One Humanity" (and this is lifting it almost fucking verbatim from the film).
      The old Martian government didn't care for it's secrete development of female androids to supplement it's nonexistent female population (which this is where you can debate whether its sexist or not, and to WHOM it is sexist, male or females), which is ASSUMED because when people left Earth for Mars, it's been predominantly men who left.
      Mars can't survive as a planet with just half the of the human sexes (and unfortunately, it's exacerbated because men don't actually give birth, and from a biological perspective, unfortunately, we're pretty damned disposable compared to females). The whole thing was purely driven by the male/female divide on mars, which, in itself wasn't a criticism of women, (and VERY little actually spoke of Earth or of human females), but on men's impotence without women.. (if there was a sexist message).
      The other thing missing from this whole "sexist" argument is that it discusses that if it was all about creating female baby machines, then why create male ones (which there are). The answer is that they weren't originally baby machines. They're baby machines created from repurposed assassin cyborgs.
      And the males still get shafted because they're even more defective than the females and are even more likely to go insane (which the females supposedly may as well, but yeah.. doesn't happen).
      So Sage is pulling shit outta his ass left and right here to try and take an actually really PRO feminist movie and bitch about it being "sexist"

    • @ybother4921
      @ybother4921 Před 8 lety +4

      +Serif Sans Serif well just as an interesting point. one man can impregnate many women, however one woman can only be impregnated by one man at a time.
      Mars, which has a primarily male populace, wants to be independent and separate from feminist earth. In the the talks of unification the feminist earth has tons of leverage in the deal, and as history has taught us people tend to milk their advantages for all it's worth, which would lead to an extremely one sided agreement. Basically the feminist hate of sex robots is based on nothing more than the desire for power, which honestly reflects the views of the modern SJW feminists, which are feminists in name only. As for selling the idea of unity as a good thing that's actually a really common propaganda tactic used by just about every group at one point or another.

    to be honest with you it's a little hard for me to get too mad at this series as it's the first anime film i ever bought and the first series that introduced me to the cyberpunk genre but I can also acknowledge that looking back on it some of the ideas and concepts in both the film and ova series do kinda make you question the validity after a while

    I mean...the birth rate and 0 population increase is kinda reminiscent to when the french first colonised North America.
    For many years, there was no increase in population aside from imigration. To counter this, the french goverment decided that every orphan girl who reached the age of 16 and didn't get adopted would be shipped off to Nouvelle-France and would wed a colonist to bare him children and thus increase the population. These girls came to be known as "Les filles du roy", king's daughters.

    *Famous last words:*
    I'm gong to end up increasingly inspired to create villains for a story based on feminism/social justice, and it's going to take all the skill I can muster to do it well, and I'll still be hounded to an assisted suicide for taking a particular side. The side that creators of entertainment *NEVER* seem to take, only their audience. I wonder how I'll be assassinated...?
