I got it after 82 tries (or 61,500 doubloons). I wouldn't say this ship alone was worth that much but there's at least other stuff of value in there.

Yeah, I guess I wasn't so much thinking about all the other stuff you can happen upon while trying to get San Diego, but if you're in it for just the ship, it can be quite pricey.
I got it after 4 tries and it is fun yet hard to play. It also makes a killing, but I wish I could swap the reload booster for a radar or Lightning smoke.
Getting her on the 4th out of 100 is pretty good luck! Congrats. I'd agree with the radar or smoke, but they have to make her different somehow, I guess.
I jist got san Diego out of a tier 2 crate abd ognivoi today that upgraded to a tier 3 i had no idea they were super prizes.san Diego is tough to play its hard to finish ships off because of sap over saturation

I love flint and i wish they gave san Diego smoke like flint. I like Atlanta and flint but up tiered at tier 7 is alot harder opponents
Seems….inefficient. Between what you may have to spend to get it and how much lead you have to put out there to accumulate damage, seems like the whole package is a can of spam. Except for getting dev struck, seems like it would be efficient in that. Great pull from Predator.
Also, that was a pretty crafty play on that Kansas.
I agree 100%. Though, I think the Kansas was a bit too brave, personally.
High maneuverability, good stealth, great DPM with stellar SAP pen angles. Seems to me this is ideal for a flanking/open water/agile DD/cruiser hunter. Sitting behind islands is exactly the worst use of this kit, especially since you have SAP firing arcs that don't allow for the best island play. Honestly it's right up my alley considering the last thing I want is yet another island camping fire starter, but definitely not at this price, not when I can already play great ships like Baltimore and Atago. Math fact: you have a 50% chance of pulling a San Diego after 69 pulls, which is still an insane amount of money. This system is better than auctions, but not by much.
You can always try. I think that's going to be more situational, map dependent, and what spawn you get in part because of how popular flanking is with destroyers, in part because you simply run out of room, you might start in the middle, and because it's hard to keep sustained fire up against an enemy that doesn't like the number of hit indicators (even if they're not doing a lot of damage) that they give you. Figure a distracted battleship you'll get 5-8 volleys on him before he can get his guns around, a couple less if you want to lose your spot before he decides to shoot you.
To each their own.
But I do totally agree that it's crazy expensive if you're in it just for the ship.
