    I disagree with the comparison with Maguire (and btw, I think Maguire is underrated). I think Maguire in one on one defense is better and he's also better in the air, but the Ligt is better capable of a high line defense and in posession he's much better. What makes the key difference imo, is that he will make himself available for Onana to receive first pass and progress the play. He is excellent high volume passer (short passes, not long ones). This would be the last year to cash in on Maguire, so I would sell him. I am unsure De ligt is a good idea, but mostly because of injuries concerns.

    @AjAnalysis great content as always. Main debate in the comment section is :
    First - whether is a better signing than brainthwaite.
    Second- whether he runs a risk of being injury prone.
    Martinez has missed more games in one season than Delight in three seasons. And yet martinez is not injury prone. He faces recurring injury on same location of his body same to deligt and thus can be managed through change of technique or shift of body weight. It shouldn't be aa worry.
    Im his comparison with brainthwaith...deligt brings immense experience in the team given that he has played in the top clubs that are in the top leagues of the world sheds light also to his leadership and mentality. The locker room needs this type of personality against challenging big teams like man city. Brainthwaith is far below him in this respect. And skills too, delight is the most preffered in build up and tactical flexibility.

    I have been watching De Ligt since he was 15 in the youth of Ajax. He was so good for us at Ajax. Basicly had everything.
    Now a days he has two big weakpoints in my view. First is defending the wide spaces. He is slow to turn on the byline and not comfortable in the spaces normally a rightback would defend. Other weak point is dribbling on the ball. His passing is good enough for a central defender. But ball carrying into wide spaces and midfield feels like he is much much weaker than he was in the time at Ajax.

    @m4767 Před 10 dny

    AJ, I respectfully disagree with you and others on we needing a different profile because De Ligt has the same profile as Maguire. True but the BIG DIFFERENCE here is De Ligt can and has played high line. That is what we need to close the gap between the midfield and defense. And reason Nagelsman went in for him. Don’t forget EtH’s philosophy of high intensity and winning the ball back in the final third is more German-Ragnick influenced than Dutch. Going in for a different profile means we will have to set up differently again this season and hope it works rather we build on last year’s and minimize injuries this season. Majority of our problems last season which was also stated clearly in the athletic report from Laurie that our defenders retreat to low block cos they’re not comfortable which creates the gap. I think this kid will be a serious STEAL because he thrives in attacking system which he only had under Nagelsman after leaving Ajax hence fans favorite in his first years at Bayern.

      And when you have Martinez next to you, you need to cover for his weaknesses, that being, aerial duels and channel defending.

    "Lisandro Martinez quite poor in the air"?? I don't know if the only football you watch is on stats pages because that's a damn lie. I give you he's not a heading monster like Maguire but he's certainly not "poor" and I've seen him win many headers when up against players much taller than him. I've played football myself for 25 years and watched football on TV since the 70'ties and I've seen many players who are quite poor at heading like myself - but Martinez is certainly not one of them in spite of his height.

      @@AJAnalysis Exactly! But also - "compared to alot of the other top cbs" he's better at tackling, ball carrying, passing and he's also very press resistant etc. etc. So I rate him very high and I think he's one of United's most important players. In fact one of the main reasons United did so poorly last season missing him most of the season. Pep even named him in "the top 5 CB" after the FA Cup final. So I can easily live with he's not the greatest header of the ball - but "poor" is simply not true.
