  • Adam is so stoked to get back to the cave after a few weeks of filming abroad, and one of the first things he opens up is a package from luthier Ted Woodford (aka @twoodfrd), one of Adam's favorite CZcams creators. Ted has sent back a 1970's Japanese electric guitar he restored for Adam--documented on his own channel--and Adam completes the build with a few aesthetic additions of his own. Time to break in this shop guitar!

Love this, and I LOVE Ted's videos too. Ted and "Uncle Doug" are the titans of guitar/amp repair vids on CZcams- soothing, funny, knowledgeable, and focused on the content first, rather than being a personality and mugging for the camera.
One word of caution: that shelf liner rubber sheeting is great for keeping things in place, but it reacts strangely with some guitar finishing products- I have had it leave marks on guitars finished with nitrocellulose lacquer, so I wouldn't advise leaving a guitar sitting on that stuff for any period of time, or using it as packing material. In case you're curious, this is a 1960's (late) Univox Tempo. There's a couple online in listings you can look up that are complete and original. You can tell this one apart from other models because of the gold, cursive font plate that says "Tempo", there's a couple more that share the Sunburst color scheme, but are not Tempos. Trivia, the tremolo arm was optional, something the owner would have to buy to get.
As a sidenote... i think a lot of people buy these, thinking "MiJ" from today or "yesterday" but then they find out that this is that period of cheaper Japanese products, and they're particularly stumped about it, some quite pissed, if online discussions about them are anything to sniff at. The screws not being standard (JiS) really get a lot of people, hence why these older (60's~mid 80's) pieces have particularly munched screws. All it takes is one twist with the wrong driver bit, and the cheese grade metal is done for.

Love to see Adam's guitar. I got my first electric guitar last year first like 200 bucks after playing acoustic for decades. Most fun actually was taking it apart, installing and sothering new electronics, pickups, a new neck and hardware.

4:20 Truss rod cover is the name of that piece, Adam 😁
Seeing you excited for this kinda makes me wanna build another subminiature tube amp in a Honeytone mini-amp enclosure, like the first one i did back in 2018 that was featured at the time in Hack-a-Day, but for you to keep.
Hmm. Wonder if it'd survive the trip.

When I saw Ted's video I got a little misty-eyed, I watched that guitar in the set when I started getting into guitars and thinking I'd never hear it play, and out of nowhere like 15 years later it shows up on Ted's bench and it's now back in action!
Only missed the "polishing, polishing, polishing" commentary lol

I Love Ted and his work! From the Family of luthier innovators who worked with Les Paul in the 50s-70's, Ted's repairs and educational posts are invaluable, with examples of all of the Very Rare Gibsons with Low Impedance pickups in my Les Paul Professional, Personal, Recording and L5-S. Adam Savage...has the amazing skills of...wait for it...Unboxing(?)...

Every time he says something along the lines of "when you come and visit" for a split second, i actually think it's an invitation, and then the fantasy subsides and im overwhelmed with a feeling of melancholy . As a person with severe adhd who has a hyper fixation on creativity and making, meeting and hanging out with adam savage for just 1 day in his cave would be a literal dream come true. I've been watching him pretty much my whole life . Come to think of it , looking back watching him was probably a huge contributing factor to my current interests today. Every video is a pleasure to watch. Thank you for bringing us along, Mr. Savage. Well, that got long-winded very fast. Sorry about that 😅.

Wow! For years, I told my family members “I want that guitar hanging on the MB set! Glad to hear it’s yours, and you are fixing it up! I must admit, it scared the heck out of me when you pulled out that Tele style pickguard…I only saw you screwing that thing to the body! Was so relieved to see you were using it for material.
Nice to see you bring this piece of guitar history back to life!
