For his wife's birthday, Adam makes from scratch a brass watering can for tending to their succulent garden! It's going to involve a wide range of brass working techniques to piece it together from raw sheets and tubes, from the engineering of the form to the machining and soldering of parts together to make it actually functional. And by the end, it becomes a beautiful bespoke gardening tool!
NOTE: This video does not include any footage of Adam actually using the watering can, so he filmed a clip after the request came up in a live stream.

Brass pipes don't buckle if they are fitted with a right size core, it is all to do with tolerances. I grew in brass instrument shop, you can also roll them back to flat but it also requires something round that is very close to the inner diameter. We use rare earth magnets and rolling bearings now, magnet covered with leather so you can remove it and it doesn't get too close to the opposite magnetic metal.

Has Adam built a drum yet? It'd be awesome if he made himself a little "thinkin' drum" to mount by the end of a workbench. Just a mounted or welded-up assortment of small odd shapes of different materials moubted on a little metal rack that has a good resonating chamber perhaps.
Somethig like kalimba meets xylophone, with a touch of steel drum and cowbell?
And of course, in a blue moon, a new project-in-progress might yield up a small addition to the thinkin' drum.

*absolutely...that would be so much fun to watch...not as a one day build but as an actual super serious project for use by local musicians*
*several ways of doing this...one being the typical steel drum set that is then polished and chromed...then perhaps a variant set as you might find in a blade runner setting ....followed by a Mad Max world setting then maybe an H.R Giger alien setting....true the last three would be insanely complex and expensive to produce so a lot of planning would be needed, but when completed they could easily be rented out to production houses for background movie props and Comic Con musical events...just sayin'*

There is something to be said when making an item where the primary drive in making the item is love. Normally items are made for profit or for functionality and that is as it should be but when an item is made for love it does not have to be profitable, or sensible even in its construction. Lavishes can be made, time and care that are too expensive for profit and when you are done you have an item unlike any other. One made by hand that tells a story of our love for another person, an item made not just functional but created to bring joy and happiness to another. Those are the very best projects. I really like that you didn't reveal what you wrote on the bottom of the can. Thanks for sharing such a great build :)

Would love to see a three part series of building the same “thing” each time but with three separate variations, improving on design and concept with each iteration. For example, with this build the next iteration would address fixes for the issues you ran into with the leaks while making the spout look more like one piece and improving weight balance. There is always room for improvement, I think it would be cool to see a series that crowdsourced potential improvements through multiple iterations.

    This is an awesome gift!
May I make a design suggestion to any other makers inspired by this? As a grower and seller of plants, I fill and carry a lot of watering cans on a daily basis. My suggestion is to offset the fill hole to one side of the can (ideally to the right for right handed folks and the the left for left handed folks). This would make it easier to fill under any tap without the handle getting in the way, allowing the user to hold the can in their dominant hand, or rest the can on a solid surface to trickle fill without the water running down the handle and off the outside of the can. Also, for a name or business logo on the outside, put it on the user's dominant hand side means that the name/logo is on the side facing away from the user and toward the rest of the world when in use, which to me would be 👌. Again, super build. Kinda reminds me of one I had as a kid, and something I would love and cherish. Hand made gifts are the best IMHO!

Commenting at the beginning here. I am a jeweler and knife maker as well as a restorer of antique tools, weapons, jewelry and the like. I am a sucker for brass! Especially brass and wood, but you can't go wrong with brass! I also happen to be a succulent collector myself. May have to make something like this! I really love when you say you will let the build determine the final design. That is my method on almost every single project I do. I plan and start with a detailed idea, but the build always determines certain aspects of the final product... and I am always (97%😆) pleased with the results. I believe that is one thing that makes HANDMADE items so much more valuable, sentimentally as well as monetarily (for sellers like me). I also love that you're building for your wife! I try to make my wife and family things any time I am able. The item is so much more personal, its absolutely priceless. Now back to watching!

This was awesome, and helpful! I have a wooden stool in the shape of a whale whose tail broke off years ago. A friend made it so I couldn't bear to part with it but it's been hidden away. We recently moved to the farm country just outside New Bedford MA ( the home port in Moby Dick), so it is time for a whale repair job. I sort of designed a tail made of brass for it that can be smaller than the original because the brightness of the metal offsets the dark wood. I haven't done metal work since High School - but what I learned was that I was WAY too concerned about the solder joints being flush. This project doesn't have to hold anything but attention. Thanks!!!
