  • I work extremely hard to bring you this content.
All I ever ask for in return is a simple thumbs up. It really helps the channel. Thanks.
In this video, I restore my friend Mickey’s Gibson SG back to a pretty decent Guitar from total trash. Now the goal here was not to make it look new just make it look better, leave some scars, and make it play like it a bat flying straight out of He!! My friend Mikey loved it, so in my mind mission accomplished. Tell me what you think and what you would’ve done differently and if you want to use any of the tools you saw in the video here’s a list.

Stinger and truss rod cover was a nice toutch, the better a guitar looks the more you want to pick it up and play it, with that said nice job! Mickey seemed to be happy with the results and at the end of the day that is what matters. Thanks for the video and all your hard work.

Very nice job on bringing new life in that SG. If I may provide a couple of tips. I’m a guitar builder here in the Pacific Northwest. If you’re going to use a screw gun / drill, okay, but run the screws down but do not tighten. Use a good hand held screw driver to finish torque the fasteners, especially on the pick guard. It’s way to easy to over tighten the fasteners with the screw gun creating damage you don’t need. You did a great job on the fret level. Next time, support the neck when you use your leveling beam. The neck will imperceptibly flex while you are leveling making you chase various frets. When you are crowing the frets, use sharpie on the top of the fret to see your progression. Regarding scraping, if you’ll sharpen your scraper, you can achieve a, (Same As) 320 sanding job using a scraper. With that said, gouges in the wood don’t count, sanding or if too deep, filling may be required if you go that route. Try “Tru-Oil” from Beachwood MFG. for a finish, it was made for gun stock finish. It’s an amazing product and is easy to work with. Apply, let dry and buff. Apply 2-3 coats and Bob your ante or something like that. Please understand, you did a great job on that guitar, this is just a few pointers that may help you along the way. And it from the heart. Rob-

This is my favorite video so far! Congratulations to both of you! That axe came out wonderfully, and it was a great idea to capture the genuine reaction to the transformation.
I also can relate to the amount of work put into this masterpiece. While I did no such thing or even close, I put everything I DID have into rescuing a 2001 Cort-built Ibanez RG220B with an angled headstock and a rather bad neck break from a pawn shop. The rescue was on at $25 of acquisition cost, then I put into effect my plan for gluing that neck -- I wouldn't have bought it if I couldn't figure out the next step. I got lucky with the neck and later I replaced the entire single-locking Floyd-esque vibrato system with a brass-and-steel straight Floyd clone from GuitarFetish that I'd bought for another project and had left over. It got labor-intensive because I decided to replace the existing inserts and studs with the bar-connected insert unit that came with the replacement bridge. The bar kept the inserts from achieving their proper depth, so I had to pull the unit back out and route a deeper shelf into the body. Yes I WAS terrified that I would punch the inserts all the way through the body, but NO, it never happened. It remained cool even when I hammered on the bar as hard as I could to drive it as deep and flush to the body as possible. Believe it or not, the whole thing worked like a charm, especially after a decent-to-good fret job. Even a tyro (newbie) like me can do a fret job better than the factory job with the right tools, some easily-gathered instruction from places like CZcams, some good attention to detail and a liberal amount of elbow grease! The only thing that would slow me from gigging the thing right now is the need for a routine setup refresh.
I did change out the pickups. I tried to like the original stock pickups, but they just kinda sucked. I got lucky again with a pair of Epiphone Alnico Classics that I think were from the second and better revision. They give this otherwise "Metal A.F." axe true vintage tone. I now have what a product description of another Ibanez metal axe -- an S Series, if I recall correctly -- threw out as something like, "a metal guitar with the warm sound of an axe from the fifties ..." I remember bridling at that description, as if it implied that only those axes could possibly sound good. Now, after getting several decades older and achieving the effect in my own roundabout way, I see what they meant and why it was/is good.
Thing is that both axes were/are better. Guitars from the fifties didn't have Floyds!
