The Expanse Season 5 Book to Show. How Nemesis Games was adapted for the fifth season, and some of the major changes. Please subscribe! - bit.ly/PetePeppers
Season 5 of the Expanse is an adaptation of the fifth book in the Expanse series “Nemesis Games”. This video breaks down the differences between the book and the show, and discusses what changes were improvements. Nemesis Games is the first time the crew were separated since they salvaged the Roci, and we got our point of view chapters from Amos, Naomi, and Alex. This gave us more insight into how the characters think, and helped us learn more about the secrets in their pasts.
The ending of season 5 lines up with the ending of the fifth book. The Free Navy have taken control of the Ring Space and Medina station, and the Inner Planets’s hold on the system is deeply diminished. Earth is still recovering from the asteroid attacks, and Mars just lost a large portion of their Navy who defected through the Laconia Gate.
Some of the major changes from book to show are that Alex Kamal died in episode 10. Alex is still alive in the books. Drummer was involved in most of the season even though the character Michio Pa doesn’t return until the sixth book. Alex meets with Sauveterre rather than Duarte on Mars. Monica brought information to Holden about ships going Dutchman while transiting the rings, and Fred Johnson dies during the attack on Tycho.
There are also several changes in the Free Navy story in season 5 when compared to Nemesis Games. Marco and Filip were introduced in season 4, and their plan to throw asteroids at Earth was revealed. This was a total surprise when the first rock hit in the books. In the show Filip decided to kidnap Naomi, while in the book it was Marco’s plan. Also when Naomi went to see him she didn’t tell Holden where she was going or what she was doing.
In the season 5 finale Marco and his fleet had a decisive victory in the battle for the Sol Ring Gate. With a coordinated attack that involved Sauveterre’s breakaway Martian fleet, and control of Medina station the Free Navy was able to dominate the Outer Planets. Sauveterre and the other Martian ships transited the Laconia Ring, and the protomolecule had already been delivered to Laconia. The Barkeith disappeared when it tried to transit the ring.
Let us know what theories you have about season 6, and how you think his story will end. If you’ve read ahead in the book series, please make sure to mark any book spoilers when you comment.
This Expanse season 5 and Nemesis Games video explains everything you need to know about the book to show changes. It explains what the characters are doing and what it means for the rest of the season.

I didn't unlike the changes, you can't put everything in the show. I thought all the decisions to cut and blend sections made sense. The only thing I ended up not liking was the introduction of another UN secretary (at least he wasn't former education secretary- writers may be Galactica fans) and the kill the belters sub plot. The heroic death for Alex was a solid choice in an otherwise bad situation.

I started this whole ride by reading the books and was so excited when the show was announced. I can honestly say that The Expanse is one of the blue-moon-rare occasions when adaptation is complimentary and satisfying even with divergence from the original story.
So far it's every bit as good as Game of Thrones and with Ty and Daniel so involved I don't fear the same fumble and failure that GoT suffered.
I've been a hardcore sci-fi fan since I was a kid, (born of Star Trek) and The Expanse blows everything out the airlock. It is sheer excellence and I'm so grateful to have found it and had the pleasure of getting on at the ground floor to see it succeed and garner such a wonderful community of fans.
Thank you again Pete for loving the show so much and making these incredible videos in service of the fandom. You make my favourite saga BIGGER and more tangible and I hope it brings you great success for all your passion.

Totally agreed. I feel the actors do a great job to show us more emotions that sometimes the book may glaze over. I loved the EP when Bobbie saves Naomi. And with Amos you get more info about he’s back stores in the book. But to see Amos with Eric at the moon base. That was a better good bye then the book lol. I loved the bottle slowly dropping.

Since I didn't knew about the situation of Alex's actor, his death in the series took me by surprise but thought it fit the story well. All the time through the season you see damocles dagger hanging on top of every1 of the crew in one way or another and just when everybody seems safe Alex bites the dust from all that high g maneuvering. And his last line seems like he had no regrets at the end. To me it fits the story. Makes the expanse world all that much dangerous and raises the stakes. I'm looking forward to peaches doing something awesome now.

It is a lot easier to accept changes from a book(s) when the writers of the books are on board with the changes. In 2001 Arthur C Clarke originally had the Discovery go to Saturn but he agreed with the script writers that Jupiter made more sense.

Excellent video, Pete. I am an avid reader of the books as well (or listener to, on audio) just starting on my third run through of the first 5 books and into the second run through of books 6-8, in anticipation of the final book in October, which can't come soon enough. This was a great refresher, and I agree with you completely on your thoughts on the book to show adaptation. I was discussing with my wife just the other day how difficult it must've been to put this show on the screen because how much of the story was told from the perspectives of the characters, especially with respect to Naomi because she didn't exactly have anyone to discuss her plans of escape with; it was all internal dialogue. I use the example of the needle Naomi injects herself with after she jumps out into the vacuum of space; there's really no way for her to tell the audience what exacly that is, though I'm sure many can guess as to what it is.
I think my least favorite change (besides them killing off Alex, which is a bummer but I understand why it had to happen) is one you pointed out, that they didn't seem to make as big of a deal of the asteroid strike with respect to the sheer quantity of the deaths as a result of the strike.
I liked the scene where Naomi jumps ships, I was really excited to see how they shot that scene. Watching the side of her face closest to the sun burn and her skin freeze, the fact that you see she lets all the air out of her lungs before she opens the airlock, and her desparation as she opens the airlock into the Chetzemoka (I remember in the book that she had some sort of tool that let her open the airlock quickly, but I can't recall exactly). Either way, I thought they did that very well.

Having a gunship in the Belt turns out to be a lucrative niche. In the show they got paid a lot from the UN to go to Ilus. Most of the time when their doing work for the OPA or private corporate happens in between the events in the series, but there are several mentions of them being flush with cash from the work. If they didn't continually smash up the Roci they'd be doing even better, but Fred helps them out with that on Tycho.

I've never read the books but I have been a fan of the show since 2018. As I mentioned in a previous video you posted, I was disappointed by the finale after the reuniting of the Rossi crew. It was like they sliced two shows together and the second half was just a bunch of filler. The re-shoot was so obvious with freezing the frame and adding cgi blood around Alex, then the exposition to explain his death. Of course that part was not their fault, with the firing of Cas Anvar they had to find a way to remove him from the series

@@SamAsMe I agree. Don’t think Bobbie and Alex had enough time to gel in the tv series. You can tell Alex’s death was premature and an add-in, but did the best they could given their decision to kill him off was after the initial shoot.
Bobbie is also a hard person to get to know and Alex’s calm and easy going demeanor was like the only character that could be close friends with Bobbie. Will be interesting to see where they take this. The writers have been awesome so far. I hope they can do this right in Series 6 and not make things awkward. Hopefully they will adapt well.

I'm re-watching the whole series AND re-reading the books. I noticed that the show greatly downplayed the number of casualties on Eros Station in the first and second seasons. In the books a million and a half people live there; in the show, only 100,000. Downscaling the amount of sheer human carnage seems to be a conscious policy. Sparing the tender sensibilities of TV viewers, I guess.

This analysis makes no sense. TV shows tend to raise the drama because destruction plays well on TV and everybody likes to be 'shocked' by gratuitous violence. My bet is they wanted the casualties to matter more. When you start throwing out 'millions dead' every time something happens it really starts to lose its impact on the viewer. It's as true on TV as it is in real life.

I find it amusing that they have a man, who’s almost the same age as his parents 😂 playing his son. They all look the same age. Lol!

This was my least favorite book because I feel like it didn't move the story forward. The show did a great job of creating action and plot from the character development in the book. I am looking forward to season 6!
