The Expanse season 4 saw the show revived by Amazon. The Rocinante and it’s crew led by James Holden (Steven Strait) leave the Sol system for the first time. They travel through the Ring Gates that opened at the end of season 3, opening portals to 1,300 new habitable systems. The rings were created by the protomolecule, and Holden had a vision where he saw that their civilization had been destroyed. This raises questions about the worlds at the other end of the gates, and what it could be that wiped out the protomolecule creators.
In season 4 Holden continues to see visions of Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane), who encourages him to travel through the gates. Crisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo) gives him and the Rocinante crew a mission to travel to the new planet that the UN calls New Terra. A group of belter refugees from Ganymede bypassed the blockade to transit through the ring landing on the new planet first calling it Illus. This sets up a conflict when the U.N. gives Royal Charter Energy a charter to mine the planet’s lithium.
Holden, Naomi Nagata (Dominique Tipper), Alex Kamal (Cas Anvar), and Amos Burton (Wes Chatham) make the journey to Illus. On the way Naomi decides that she wants to go down to the surface. Since she is a belter this is a difficult process of taking injunctions of gravity drugs. Once they arrive the crew run into several problems ranging from the environment, to tensions between the belters and the RCE, and protomolecule related phenomena.
In season 4 the Belt and main faction of the OPA is cooperating with the inner planets. They have converted the Behemoth into Medina Station which they can use to control traffic outside the Ring Gates. Not all belters are enthusiastic about this, and Naomi’s old boyfriend, and father of her child, created a new group called the Free Navy.
On Earth Avasarala is trying to stop a mass exodus of colonists rushing through the rings. She is getting resistance from other assembly members, and finds herself in an election that isn’t going her way. On Mars Bobbie Draper (Frankie Adams) is having trouble transitioning into civilian life. She gets caught up in some criminal activity where she learns that Mars is no longer viable now that the gates are open, and that there is a conspiracy related to the Military involving weapons and ships.
Marco Inaros and his Free Navy have a plan to give the Belt power now that the Ring Gates have opened up. Nancy Gao beat Crisjen Avasarala in the election for the U.N., and campaigned on opening up the gates for colonization. This means Mars will abandon their terraforming efforts, and leave Belters in a bad position since many of them can’t live on planets because they grew up in space.

Season 4 of The Expanse, its first as a global Amazon Original, begins a new chapter for the series with the crew of the Rocinante on a mission from the U.N. to explore new worlds beyond the Ring Gate. Humanity has been given access to thousands of Earth-like planets which has created a land rush and furthered tensions between the opposing nations of Earth, Mars and the Belt. Ilus is the first of these planets, one rich with natural resources but also marked by the ruins of a long dead alien civilization. While Earthers, Martians and Belters maneuver to colonize Ilus and its natural resources, these early explorers don’t understand this new world and are unaware of the larger dangers that await them.

Very good series overall. But I'm starting to get a little upset at the nonsense half way through the 4th season. Sometimes I have to look ahead a little and find out some details to not get upset at a story, if it starts to seem too stupid. Like why would an advanced civilization make that kind of death machine, that will infect everything, intelligent and nonintelligent beings, just to make a gate, and wipe out any solar system that threatens the machine in the middle. If they are that advanced, they should know that building such a thing is really, really bad. Its basically a Hitler machine- genocide x a million, but these advanced people are stupid enough to build it this way anyway, without failsafes and off switches. And why would the main character keep listening to Miller and pushing buttons after seeing what is happening. Miller just keeps going "Woo, I'm spooky! Push the next button and we'll see what other weird stuff this genocide goo can do. But I can't give you any answers. You just have to keep doing dumb stuff with no explanation." And it seems after listening to a bunch of videos explaining the protomolecule that there is no real answer. Its just as dangerous and stupid as it seems, wiping out any civilization it comes across. ANd no real answers are given in the end. The supposed advanced civilization is just a bunch of monkeys too, stupidly playing with death. Life is rare- so lets build a machine to wipe it all out everywhere! ANd its getting a little old having so many hateful characters at this point, even if it mirrors what real people are like. Its a bit hard to keep watching, even forward-winding past stupidity, because its turning into 3/4 mean people and stupidity.
Do we know what the planet, new Terra, was trying to do? Or is that left a mystery? I'll have to watch that last episode again.
I needed this badly. I started watching season 5 and I realized I had forgotten everything that happened in season 4.

@@julz6077 I have the same problem. But that is what speaks for the show. It is not a kid's show. You have to keep thinking. Greatest SF series since modern BSG.
@@captainprototype187 I agree with you but only til season where naomi had short hair. I want to know more about the scifi aspects and the scifi plot the alien life form and not a melo drama about the characters. But I had the same problem with BSG in some episodes so yeah maybe just my taste
This season was a great example of book adaptation. It was the weakest book but the show took what it needed, added some Mars novella elements.. boom great season.

Rewatching the series after reading the books made me appreciate S4 a lot more. Great recap!
That's interesting. I had already read them before I watched it. I thought they did a pretty good job keeping all the characters involved. The Earth/Mars stuff is really obviously added on for that reason, but you can see how they're setting things up.
@@PetePeppers1 Yeah, I thought the season was pretty good before, but the books open your eyes to the potential being created for the rest of the story.
I had a great time rewatching the series & introducing it to my brother.
Season 5 looks like it's going to be amazing.

Did anyone find it odd that Naomi couldn't stay on a planet, but she could travel on a ship at 1G, and do multiple Gs when needed?
Why did avasarala leak the photos of new terra and what was she trying to accomplish by doing so? Why did she get in trouble for leaking them?

*Spoiler* Proto-Miller, LOL. Nice name for the Inquisitor. I wander what happened to him after the bullet and Holden removed the piece of protomolicule from the Rosi? He was still in the New Tara computer and was gaining senescence in the book 4. That was the last we saw of him. I wonder if he will show in book 9.
