- Is there a "Ta Donk" noise when you begin pedaling? Calvin shows this symptom and how to fix it in this week's Tech Tuesday.
A loose cassette stack causes poor shifting and increases wear to the freehub splines. A discerning ear will hear an extra "Ta-Donk" noise as the rider begins to pedal. Watch and learn how to diagnose and solve this problem.

I bought my park tools solely because of this guy, I like the other guys but this one is boss for sure. Thank you sir.
I've got their tools and his repair manual. All worth the price.
Yes this man is a Mith
my park tools are the highest quality tools that I own.
"this guy" has a name... Its Calvin Jones.
Feel ya ! I bought the tools and I don't even have a bike.
I have to say that the fact you make videos like these is one of the reasons I tend to favour Park Tool whenever I'm buying new bike tools. Great stuff!
Huomenta 😁
exactly even if they cost more the video adds tons of value to them, also they are made with the highest quality from what I can tell
This guy’s awesome, the videos are always so well presented and concise
Keep up the great work

There are plenty of other good bicycle service tools available in many brands that are still good .
This video just saved me from buying yet another freehub body for something that wasn’t a problem in the first place. Love this dude and Park Tool.
Park tool's videos really are the gold standard for bike maintenance. Keep it up guys.
Glad to see you using the Metric system. :)
Calvin is a treasure I still remember when my parents bought me his big blue book of maintenance and i still keep coming back for more insight from him!
I love the way Mr.Calvin teaches stuff, these videos encourages me to work on my bike,on my own and take good care of it. Cheers!
I found your exertion noises far more useful for figuring out perceived effort!!
These are such useful videos, very very good :)
Nice chap!
Sir, you are an asset to Park Tools. Probably even more valuable than the tools that the company sells.
Thanks for the great video. I have had an increasing rattling and finally figured out it was the back sprockets that were loose. This video and the one about cassette removal and installation were such a help. Bought the Park Tool from Amazon. Took it apart, cleaned things up and then re-installed and tightened things up. Wow! My bike hasn't run this smooth in a long time. Thanks again! P.S. -An old chain and a pair of vice grips is a great substitute for the chain whip tool.
I was just suggested this video so that's why I am late. But man, how great is this explanation! US and European and also a guideline as to what a certain amount of torque should feel like. It's all you can wish for. Mad props!
I am a retired motor equipment mechanic who is channeling my energy into bicycle repair. This guy is my bicycle repair Guru!
Calvin is the best mechanic on CZcams. He’s cured my creaks yet again. Great job ✌️
i know this video was posted year ago but 3:00 save me from all my worries to my newly bought shimano hyperglide. Thank you so much Calvin and Park Tool. Informative and simple, helping us newbs!
Thanks for the comment near the end about free hub play. I was trying to “fix” the whole cassette wobble until I found this video.
It sounds so obvious now but I had the same issue. When I replaced my cassette I expected to see gouging of the freehub splines, because I felt play when I tugged on it in the bike stand. I never tried *engaging* the freehub first by rotating it clockwise before tugging on it. Now I know the slight movement is normal and is play inside the freehub, not worn splines or loose lockring.
Thanks - you've put my mind at rest. I've just fitted a new cassette and I noticed there was a little bit of side-to-side play on the hub and I was wondering if I hadn't tightened enough. Good to learn that a little play is not a problem. great series of videos - I've learnt a huge amount from them.
You are a genuine hardworking and educational tutor i learnt alot from watching a few of your vids all related to my problems and will cure it thanks.
Thank you so much Mr. Calvin! I was almost about to spend so much on new hubs thinking that cassette play in 2:57 meant something was broken.
Update: bought Park tool MLP-1.2; FR-2.5GT; and CP-1.2. It fixed after tighten the lockring with spec.
Thank you much! This helped to confirm my two months old S Levo issue.
Symptoms from weird - noise - noise lounder when changing gears.
Checked and found loose cogs, still think it normal for new bike... Confirmed problem after found this very helpful video.
Thanks, Calvin. 😊
This video was especially AMUSING, as well as helpful.
** You are an excellent teacher, always bringing us valuable information in a very relevant way. Thanks so much!
This is the best channel on CZcams period
This is the best channel for explaining everything in details !!!!
THANKS a lot "Park Tool" ;)
Awesome work, simple and functional Calvin, you're the Man. Keep on doing the good work. Cheers.
This channel is the Walhalla for amateurs like me! Thanks a lot. I have this play on my new bike and now I don’t have to worry.
Great video. Started hearing a weird knocking sound from the rear end when landing drops and jumps.
Checked the rear mech clutch, rear axle and eventually found play in the 12 speed cassette exactly as shown at the start of the video where a few of the smaller gears have rotational play independent of the larger gears. Whilst waiting on the locking tool to arrive, I'm glad I found this video as I was worried I might have had a damaged cassette and was hopelessly optimistic that it would tighten up.
Not sure if that was a dad joke but I appreciate the effort. Love all your videos. Please keep up the good work!
Totally saved me some money. I was about to spend cash on a new cassette since my HG driver is relatively new and looks in great condition. Thank you for these types of videos.
fantastic video, just developed that noise today and thought it was due to chain strech, but found a loose cog thanks so much for the info, Parks Tools best value in the business
Excellent Calvin - as you say all machines and especially bikes talk to us, usually to say fix me or spend money - gerching gerching! Brilliant video sir. 😊
I love the subtle "flam" sound effect when he says flam. Amazing.
Really useful video! I noticed the same noise from my drivetrain but could not realize what was wrong...it turned out the cassette bolt was a bit loose...I really appreciate these videos and you guys earned a new subscriber :) Keep up the good work!
Calvin is awesome!! He should be on every "how-to" video on the internet!!
A very good explanation of the problem. I would add one thing: the sound gears make when you change them on a loose cassette is quite distinctive, it is more of a 'clack' sound than a 'clink' sound. Something else to listen out for.
You just gave me sooo much piece of mind, you are AWSOME CALVIN!
I absolutely love your tools and videos! Great work guys!
This is great. I love the explanation of WHY, not just HOW to do something. And developing the ability to diagnose, not just fix.
That’s why Calvin is king 🤴 the why not just the how of things working the right way.I agree with you 💯 percent.
Why isnt every DIY bike related video maker saying that some play in the cassete (as a whole) is normal and in fact good? I almost unlock my cassete
THANK YOU, DAMN KINDA GAVE ME ANXIETY THAT MY CASSETTE HAS A LITTLE PLAY OF THE FREEHUB, THOUGHT IT WASN'T NORMAL, AND THEN I WATCHED THIS GUY LOL. LIFE SAVER.
Thank you Park Tools! I bought a new bike, ride it for a week and noticed also some wobble in the cassette. Was about to head to the shop and demand for a fix but saw your video and now I am relieved that its only normal freehub play.
I am in that same exact position. Although I have to admit I wonder if this is common for all bike hubs as in it is designed to be that way? Or is the ones that wiggle more like detective ones that shouldn't but do have a slight 1mm wiggle?
This guy is a genius! Absolutely love his explanations!
Thanks Mr. Jones for the advise of free hub play! This was exactly the issue that I was facing with my cassette!
Always informative, and entertaining, too!
Thank you very much, I was searching for exactly this kind of noise and now I now it's just a thing I can fix myself. Have a good day sir!
Amazing as always Calvin Jones.
Thanks! High-quality tools, high-quality videos.
You are a great guy! Your videos are very informative and comprehensive! Thanks a lot buddy!
Amazing tools with amazing video tutorials and how to. Thank you.
Why did I get fired from my last job? Answer: 0:12
lmao!
That "don't confuse" at 3:50 yeap exactly what I had done haha, I was worried because the locknut wouldn't tighter any further. While pedaling that small play wasn't there. No more confusion! Thank you.
Who knew that Calvin has a sense of humor. Thanks as always Calvin.
I've just ordered my Park Tool Discerning Ear. Should arrive next week with my Park Tool Skinny Arm Torque Wrench 🤘
great tip on freehub play vs loose cassette. Exactly what I came here for. Thx.
Calvin makes great videos help me with my bike maintenance!
thanks Kelvin, i have worked on my own bikes for decades and on my particular bike atm my cassette does have a slight wobble to it, more so than any other bike from the past, enough to make me wonder if i had a problem, but thanks to you it's the norm to have a bit of play in it, but I'm still gonna service it soon, again thank you master
Excellent advice again, Calvin!
Beautiful! Sussing out a knock-knock that happens only when I coast at a certain speed. Determine it isn't the cones. Monkey around on the workstand - hard to replicate there - but I catch the slightest intermittent knock while coasting.
Must be the freehub.
Pop off the cassette, wash everything off, inspect everything, dig the dirty squeeze grease off the cone and squeeze a little clean back on to please the bearing gods. Put everything back together. Shiny clean, spins well, but... cassette wiggles a tiny bit.
I ask Park Tool for help. Watch this video till end. "This much play, that much coasting knock: normal. Bike not destroying itself. You're free to go."
This is the happy ending I constantly crave. Happens rarely, but oh so satisfying when it does.
Thanks again, Calvin!
We are talking about pure excellence here! Thank you for this superb video!
Im always impressed with this guys content.
Fantastic. I thought I had a loose cassette but this explains it’s freehub play. No 60lb curls needed today!
This dude is legend.
some people who buy thee high dollar bikes must have a hard time tying their shoes .
I love the Calvin Jones videos. Thank you!
This guy is phenomenonal, was on GCN channel a few months ago as well.
best bike mechanic on the planet and great tutor
Im sucribed to parktool videos only because of you sir, you are the man!
I went to the bike shop today and they wanted to charge me daam near $35 just to do this simple thing I can do. Thank you youtube and thank you ParkTool!
I was doing some DH yesterday and hear a rotten sound from the back end. I stopped and checked over the bike and found that the 3 biggest sprockets on my nx cassette were very loose. So while I was at work today, I was thinking of things I could do when I get home to fix it. The only things I could think of was to tighten the ring to torque spec or dismantle and troubleshoot further. I just watched this video and it confirmed my initial thought. Gonna go tighten it up now.
This video series is spot on
im so glad i watched this before doing something to my rear wheel. Thank you so much!
Very helpful, friend.
Good info! It's normal!
Love the Gene autrey reference and singing.
This should sold my problem on my very new bike. Thank You. Love this chanel.

Thank you so much Calvin your videos are amazing! They're so easy to understand sir. I learned so much by just watching your videos.
Thank you very much sir! Made me smarter with every word of yours. Greetings from jekyll 3 and me , from europe germania ✌
this guy is a god ... the way he explains make everything understandable
Thanks for this video... I was a little worried with my new Shimano RS31 rear wheel.. it was having this light wobble...and the mechanic from the Shimano authorized service center told me that this is normal for Shimano wheels... I got worried because my other Fulcrum and Alexrims wheelsets do not have such. Now, with this video, it even validated what the Shimano mech told me.
Very helpful video, I also really liked the style of delivery
Man, pretty lockring tool. Thanks for putting the part number in the animation. Now I'll just need a few years to justify buying it.
Superb video....was scared to mess with my cassette but this was a huge help! Cheers!
This video saved me a lot of trouble. Thank very much!
im happy ive found your channel. so much knowledge.. thank you very much!
Excellent video and funny as well. Thanks. I have such play on my new bike but after watching this I understand that it is not an issue. Thanks
...thanks calvin you're big help for my mtb maintenance... god bless 😊
Thank you so much. I've been having this issue and the previous mechanic thought it was a worn out chain. I fixed it in 2 minutes
Think i've just realised what the noise is that has been driving me crazy for the past 10 rides. Cheers!
i love you park tool company these videos are so helpful
Nice demonstration Calvin...
Great video, funny guy who provides great solutions on each problem
Love this videos!! Calvin is great.
this guy is just...the best...
Thank you. Your tips solved my bikes problem.
1:40 You know not to question or mess with someone on anything with bikes when they can get the wheel off cleanly like that. I always catch the chain when I do it.
Calvin of Park Tools has just the right video for ya ... "How to Remove and Install a Wheel on a Bicycle"
Calvin Jones is the best.
Thanks, this is the exact problem I have on my bike. I'll attempt to fix it tonight!
Thank you very much for this video! Now I'm a bit more relaxed with the tiny play I have in my cassette.
great vid as always! super helpful
Love this !!!! More diagnoses videos please!
Spent an hour yesterday trying to figure out why my bike was making more and more noise over roots and bumps. The gods send me Calvin Jones 🥺🦾
Starting this winter,i will buy basic tools to play around woth the bike and learn to fix it s issues from these videos, since whenever i go to any bike shop, they don t seem to bother and don t fix the issues i have.
As a drummer I'm very excited you used the term flam 🥰
Thanks, Calvin you solved my problem!
Great video - thanks Calvin
