Delivery of my new washer and dryer is Wednesday and neither my husband nor I could figure out how to get the bi-fold doors off the closet so we can get our old appliances out. Thanks tons! You don't deserve the dislikes. A quick guide for those who prefer to read: Push down on the spring-loaded piece, and push down on the door with force. Proceed to pull that piece out towards you. Lift the door after you have the first spring-loaded part out, then swing to top back. Just remove the door at this point.

Here's the thing though. Not all bifold door hardware is created equal. Some have pins & slides rather than wheels etc.. Take a look at yours & I think you will be able to figure it out. well... at first i thought you were rambling a bit, but if you hadn't i would have had no idea that the doors i was trying to take down had been installed incorrectly by someone else 30 years ago... so in the rambling you gave me much needed information. thank you.

Thanks! Your tipping to the side helped me figure out that I needed to remove the screws where the door is hinged in the middle so I could tip that door far enough to the side. This made it easy to take off the other side, too, because it was stuck/hung up. It needs to be cut slightly shorter due to putting in new flooring.

Thank you. I watched both videos. I was dealing with a 1970s apartment one. I needed a step stool to see and screwdriver to pop it, but once I did, I was able to lift door up, off and away. Success!!!

thank you for this tutorial, joe. i am looking to remove an older set of doors, probably installed in the 70's, and clearly never moved since. thanks to you, one door came off easily, the other was not installed correctly, and now i am stuck. i'll figure it out, hopefully without breaking the door, but with out this tutorial i would have simply taken a sledge hammer to both doors. :)
Haha one of your doors you may have to lower that door in order to have enough room to remove it. You can lower at the bottom adjuster where the door mounts to the floor. A pain when people don't have these adjusted I know! How did you do? Thanks again for stopping by with your "rambling" messages. LOL

Great video, thanks!! I'm still working on trying to get my laundry room doors off. I have that trim at the top that is giving me a hard time. I can't get it to come under to the front! So frustrated. Hope I won't have to remove that trim. Dryer is broken and I'm at wits end. But loved your video - it's ONLY one that gives good detailed instructions on how to remove. Thanks again.
Amy Alexander If you can't pull down on the spring loaded pin at the top of the door that is right up next to the wall....if it doesn't come out of the hole, then that will mean you would have to screw in the bottom peg that is at the bottom of the door. That will lower the over all height of the door that will then in turn let you get the top of the door out from under the top trim. Most doors you won't have to do this but if the wood door wasn't cut off enough for the height, then you will have to do it this way. Then guess what...when you reinstall the door once you get it in place you might then have to screw out the bottom peg to have your door up high enough to fit in the top rail after you sneak it up under the top wood trim. I've had to do this a few times & it will try your patience for sure. Another thing you may have to do is when you get ready to screw in the bottom peg of the door you may have to lift the entire door up with one hand to take the weight off so you can then reach under & screw in the bottom peg. See what I mean? Try that & see if that will work for you. Let me know how it goes! Joe :0

I found that by pulling up on the pistons for the bottom & down on the pistons on top I was able to get the other door to release.
The wall end was secured in with plates & screws. Removed the screws, slid door on tracks and propped out

Alan Freedman You could also remove the door the very opposite way meaning pull the back wheel down & swivel entire door down so it goes under the top rail then you can swivel all the way down. Try that. Joe :0

Good information. This should have been a 2 minute video instead of 7. No point in asking the viewer what they would do. If we knew that we wouldn't be on here to start with. No need to tell us why the door needs to come off either. Just take it off, put it back on, and BOOM.

I like the lengthy explanation. I have a door that is similar but unfortunately no give. So I can't pull it down in order to pull it out. Still working on figuring out how to get the door out, but I appreciate the teaching approach that Joe brings to his explanation. But I wasn't looking for a badda-bing solution since I realize the problem is going to take a bit of thought in order to resolve it properly.

Hi Joe, can you tell me what to do if the bifold doesn't have the typical spring loaded catches on the interior of the door? Mine has this really annoying (and hard to remove) hardware. I'm in a rental and don't want to cause any damage but cannot stand these doors anymore while I'm here! What to do, what to do?? ;-)

My goodness, folks are so demanding. 7 minutes, hmmm, someone could drive to the hardware store and wait in line, or to the library and check out books... seems like more than 7 minutes? I appreciated the video when I needed it.
We had a new larger water heater installed so the washer and dryer had to be moved over which makes it so we now can’t open the dryer door all the way, even if I were to flip how the dryer door opens, it won’t open at all in that direction so now I have to take the door off the track. So this is me watching this so I can do it myself so I don’t have to ask my contractor situationship to do it cuz he’ll think I’m an idiot for not knowing how to take a door off the track.
So sorry to hear you now have to remove your bi-fold door in order to use your dryer from now on! Most dryers you can change the door swing so if you look carefully you might see if your dryer does that then you could swap out the door swing & then maybe you don't have to live with the bi-fold door off. @@VideoJoeKnows If I flip the dryer door, it’ll open directly into the door. Wouldn’t be able to open it at all. I’ll just hang a curtain rod.

Im noticing your able to reach up into the track with your finger above the spring loaded guide pin to push down on it... My track is much skinny to fit my finger up in there.... I ended up using a thin flat head screw driver to get up in there and pull down on the lip of the plastic cap of the spring loaded pin... Yw

I guess what you could do is unscrew the entire top track & slip it out that way. Have you tried that? It should only be attached with 4 or 5 screws which you can remove with a phillips screw driver. Try that & let me know if you get it. Thanks for commenting! Joe :0

Well what did you end up doing with your bi-fold doors? Sounds like you might have 4 of them...? Not sure how old the entire unit is & how rusty or unsquare the opening is or......so it all depends for what to do whether or not to repair or to replace. I just hate replacing these things if I can help it since they are a b.....pain to paint! They do have replacement parts for the wheels & such so let me know what you did ok? VideoJoe wants to KNOW!

Hope all is well. It was apart of my closet doors, I ended up removing them which gives the illusion of an open closet. I honestly like it a lot better that way. The construction team who built the house did a very poor job. It’s almost as if the ceiling was uneven! Thank you for you help again

This technique didn't work for me-I couldn't get the top hinge out. I found other instructions on line that recommended starting by taking out the BOTTOM hinge and the door popped right out.
Yes you could lift up & the bottom should come off the swivel down or you might even have to lower the bottom piece that is set on the floor as you can turn that to raise or lower....I have other bi fold door videos for more learning if still needed.
