''Don't write the song, let the music create itself'' - Michael Jackson
It's true. I'm a songwriter and if the music is taking you in a certain direction then go with it. Forcing the wheel will only cause frustration.
Because satan write him songs, he sold his soul

Michael Jackson’s albums were all soo good, that it was impossible to skip. Most albums only have a few good songs, but Mike created music for the soul. Off the wall is my favorite album.
You've listened to most albums? You must be very old because that would take many lifetimes.
Michael's song had it's own identity. Only few artists' had this quality. RIP King.
Is it me or is it extremely hard to pay attention to Nerdwriter while he's jamming Michael Jackson in the background?
Billy Breakaho EXACTLY 🤣
Billy Breakaho It is! I had to keep replaying some parts lol.
I just listened to the music and tuned out all that analysis 😂
yeah I keep finding myself singing along instead of listening to what he is saying, you can't play MJ and expect us to focus on anything else

It's impossible to listen to this song without moving your body.

You didn’t mention the best part of how Michael Jackson made songs. He would recreate all of the sounds of the instruments and lyrics with his voice one at a time and layer them. He’d end up with the most awesome acapella music you’ve ever heard. Then he’d bring in other musicians to record the song.

Its crazy because Michael Jackson's off the wall was the best selling and highest selling album by a black artist ever selling 20 million worldwide. Then Michael's next album thriller became the bestselling and highest selling album of all time selling over 100 million worldwide... what a jump.
@J R exactly
Yes white people are always slow with music, and they end up killing it like Rap music.
Bingo.
I know that's crazy right before Off the Wall Michael already sold 90 million with the Jacksons
What is more interesting is that MJ predicted these sales prior to the release, and everybody doubted him. Although he wanted "Bad" to sell 100 million, but he eventually got those sales with Thriller. And the CBS President didn't want to sign the Jacksons, people under him had to vouch and insist for The Jacksons, then Walter says "That was my brilliant move signing the Jacksons," when he just got done explaining that he had to be talked into it.

Jearmey Morgan Jearmey Morgan first off he ain’t pretentious for saying there are mistakes, you missed them cuz you didn’t study theory (I’m guessing) which is fine just dont get angry about it. Second if you want an example of a mistake nerdwriter1 mixed up the A and B major chords at 5:02. Also the thing about James brown making the emphasis of the first beat of every measure in 4/4 time is just wrong, and the way nerdwriter1 describes syncopations is very misleading and would definitely be marked wrong on a theory test

Actually, when you go backwards, it's the backside, when you go circular, THAT'S the Moonwalk. No offense, but when black culture is appropriated (stolen) by the "dominant" culture, it's misnomered; currently, for example, the pound is misnamed the "fist bump".
Michael was a genius when it was time to create music 🎼 He also never settled for just average. He was a perfectionist.
this comes from a man that literally beatboxes songs into existence because it's already done in his head before he even hears the first chord physically

Amazing video. I have to say though Michael's demo sounds exactly like the final. He produced this track himself, even though Quincy is credited.
Quincy gets way too much credit for MJ's success
you heard the iconic intro to this? quincy had to convince MJ to keep it, and look where that got the song
"and jackson banging on a glass soda bottle"
Why did i laugh so hard ahahahaha
PeripheralPurity Totally did not know this factoid either!

This is not a true “fact”. It was Sheila E. Not Michael. It is because of her performance (banging on glass pop bottles in this song) that helped lead her path to knowing/working with Prince.

So basically, he was musical genius
As a full-on Michael Jackson geek, I want to say thank you so much for giving the respect to him that he deserves. I think other than his really dedicated fans, most people (nowadays) see him through the lens of his odd personality later in his life. He really was so special and made significant work in pop music. I really love all his records produced by Quincy Jones and I think Off The Wall is one that his influence was most obvious. Michael had that innate musicality that comes through being a dancer! Like David Byrne said “sometimes the body understands the music before your brain does”
Forever, Michael is one of my top favorites from MJ- it's severely underrated. It was the Motown-era album where MJ spoke about feeling the most free doing. It's where you really began to see his vocal development into the MJ most people are familiar with. You did hear quite a few of the 'grunts' mentioned in the video, during the Jacksons' Philadelphia International phase, and especially a bit later in the Destiny album. And like many have already stated, the accent in DSTYGE falls on the second beat. But yes, James Brown (and Prince later on) were known for accenting on the 'one', especially with songs like 'Super Bad', or 'Sexy MF'. With the final rhythms of DSTYGE, Michael noted in an interview wanted to, as best as he could, emulate the sounds of a kalimba. He was heavily inspired by earth Wind & Fire and Stevie Wonder at that time. And yes, we must pay respects to the amazing Mr. Phillinganes, and John Robinson, whose drumming on Off The Wall was perfectly in the pocket. People underestimate Michael Jackson's brilliance when it came to composition and arrangement. As many people who attempt to duplicate his 'sound', they cannot do it.
I think his biggest vocal influence was actually Leo Sayer. Listen to you make me feeling like dancing, thunder in my heart etc
True that why there are some fools if they think this man's music is gone be muted .
His music will never be muted. There is a song that l heard for the first time the other day and l just love it. The song is call We've Had Enough.
that is why michael jackson is bigger than elvis who didnt write one single song by himself. jackson though has written most of his smash hits by himself, dont stop, beat it, billie jean, bad, the way you make me feel, speed demon, dirty diana, smooth criminal, another part of me, black or white, heal the world, who is it, give in to me, scream, they dont care about us and the list just goes on and on and on and ......
Elvis may not have written his material (aside from co-writing a couple deep tracks that no one outside of his fanbase has heard of), but he produced and arranged the vast majority of his material. Don't get me wrong, I love MJ, but Elvis was a pretty freaking talented man in his own right.
lol fuck that culture vulture elvis man only stole from black people and he was barely talented. he only got the branding right thats it !@@UltraSenseiHoots

Every now and then you throw out a vid that strongly emphazises why I subbed to your channel. This is such a vid. When MJ did steamroll the world, I was a teen - the perfect age to get the full MichaelJackson-dosis. I still listen to him on a regular base, and a lot of his music stands the test of time with ease. This closer look at one of his greatest hits ever was refreshing and a true eyeopener. Sidenote: the time and effort you put into the editing is totally not wasted - it makes your vids a smooth and an entertaining watch (doing vids myself I know what I am talking about and can appreciate your work maybe even a bit more). Really good job here, Thanks.

Yeah 1988! I turned 30 this year and it's been pretty great :3
I’m so glad I was able to see him perform his songs from the Off the Wall album. He was still with his brothers when this song was out. I was a teenager when the album came out and I got it for a Christmas present.
I wish this was what people were more curious about rather than what surgeries he had done. But of course, interviewers knew they wouldn’t make as much money asking questions focused on how he makes music :\
Very true
Quick thing: at 5:00 you list the chords correctly but name them incorrectly. The blue chord is B major, the red one is A major. The white key behind the last black key in the set of 3 black keys is A, and so that chord with stacked thirds (C# and E) is A major, not B major.
Yup, and here I thought it was just weirdly delayed lol
This is one of my favorite MJ songs and to watch this video made about the genius behind the song makes me happy. Keep up the great work.

This was the first Michael Jackson song I ever heard. I was only 6 years old on my way to watch a movie with my auntie and this was the song she had playing in her car on a cd that I believe was a compilation track. I remember joking with my brothers and sisters in the car that the girl singing sounded like my auntie. I didn't know the person singing was a man, nor did I know it was the man named Michael Jackson. Only three years later he would die and since then, I decided to really discover his music and what I found was a level of perfection I had never heard before. Today I appreciate the amount of effort and songs he got rid of before finally coming out with the beautiful compositions that have been blessing my ears for years now. Long live the king
I don't think I've clicked a video faster.. Nerdwriter and Michael Jackson. That's an automatic thumbs up. Do one on Prince next.
Seeing lots of negative comments, I'm here to balance it out. Michael Jackson no matter what you think about the man himself, had TALENT. There is no denying this at all, he made amazing music and was one of the most intellegent on making music and writing it. He was a visonary, artist, dancer, singer, humanitarian, and more. Forgetting about him is like forgetting about the man who went to the moon or forgetting the founder of our nation. He created many things, pushing the wall between MTV and Black artists down, made it common for over the top music videos, and made us all have fun and groove out to his music.
you can't fix stupid so don't try

Just wanted to say that this breakdown has inspired me more than I realized. Excellent work and thanks for helping me on my way to becoming a better musician!
I thoroughly enjoy all your analysis of various art forms. Your ability to give voice to the various facets of why we are so enamored with certain works of art - whether it is film or, in this case, music - is uncanny. With regards to music, as a sort of complimentary video to this one, I was wondering if your next project could be about how modern pop music has changed - for better or for worse (in my opinion it is the latter) - over the course of the past two decades? I think that would be an excellent topic, as nearly everyone I know has a strong opinion on this.
People argue that it is a steady slope downward, but i think we have gone past the absolute trash that was around 2007: When every song was the four chords, had a trashy rap bit in the third voice and the differences in songs were least noticeable. In the last ten years, with the continued growth of the internet, pop has become more globalised, so new influences are seeping in and it is no longer dominated by England America and Canada. I think there is value in the fact that french/korean/spanish songs can top world-wide charts.
TomChil, that was very well put, and I agree. There seems to be a resurgence in quality, primarily due to influences from the global market place.
Amazing Video! Yes, I do agree that this was the turning point for Michael. However, it's insane how underrated/under appreciated his work is before this album.
