These special effects were made with a legendary analog machine called Scanimate. Back then, special effects weren't easily created on a computer, as they are now. People had to experiment with all these different settings and knobs on a huge analog machine, to come up with something like this. It's fascinating, and whoever did the special effects on this video really did a terrific job.
Jackson was always ahead of his time
They used some kind of frame mixing & overlapping and smearing effects,as well as stop & play each tape at different moments to get such effects etc,,,with these analogue machines, trough they had to time those moments from each tape exactly for such things, i suppose.
It’s amezing what they achieved.
