- 1B Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt ejected Marlins catcher Jacob Stallings and manager Skip Schumaker over a pitch clock violation and "Time" call dispute with HP Umpire Marvin Hudson resulting in a walk to Giants batter JD Davis. Not much went right here for the umpires. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2023/...

So the umps basically made a giant mistake and compounded it with an even more giant mistake and then tossed out two Marlins for arguing it.
Hudson too busy showing everyone the count starts all this when he misses the egregious pitch clock violation. Doubles down and makes this worse by signalling time and not owning up to it. Now, a batter who should be out is on base and 2 individuals are ejected in a 1-run game in the 8th. A couple of veterans on this crew and it was handled so poorly.
Does making new rules and giving too much power to people who will never admit to making a mistake remind you of anything??
@@asthemillertoldhistale1361 yeah, cops
@@anonymouscommenter7689 nope government as a whole
These have been fantastic this year. I for one love the pace of ejections because it means more videos!
4 umpires on the field, and not 1 sees the violation by the batter. I'm sure someone will tell us the umps are held accountable, but it sure isn't in public - like players and managers are. These new rules sure are improving the game.
Oh wow. They really did screw that one up, huh? 😮
The other thing spawning from this is that the pitcher might’ve thrown a strike but after seeing time called by both the catcher and the umpire, plus the catcher popping up a bit and having to quickly drop down, the pitcher instead yanked the ball
JD Davis should have been called out for a pitch clock violation.
The statement by Hudson after the game only goes to show he had absolutely zero situational awareness and he’s a liar. Always a good look for an umpire.
do they not have a code of ethics?
@@phobos258 😂😅
@phobos258 if there was one and it worked, would CB Bucknor still be working Cardinals games?
@@austin.draude Would Bucknor be working any games? 😆
@@roymauler ethics would keep him from the Cardinals games. Incompetence would keep him from the rest of them 🤣🤣
What a goofy season so far with regard to these new rules.
I thought the umpires were aware of the clock, but they aren’t necessarily responsible to monitor it. I thought someone up in the booth would ring a buzzer in the umpires ear to indicate a violation.
If that's not the case, they really need to start doing that. In this situation, even if the 4 field umpires and the off-field umpire(s) messed up as they did, the off-field umpire(s) could have (maybe unofficially) reviewed the play and sorted the whole thing out properly afterwards.
It's my understanding that they wear something on their wrist that vibrates at zero seconds and possibly at 8 seconds too. But you can't leave it up to someone in the booth to judge if the batter is alert to the pitcher. That has to be the plate umpire and nobody else.
Lindsay nailed this one. I had one similar in an NCBA game about 10 years ago when I fouled a clearly fair ball that was just in front of home plate. The catcher completes the throw to beat the batter runner by 10 steps. Walked directly to the defensive coach and said, sorry, I effed up and took a chewing with no ejection. Batter comes back and strikes out saving me from sacrifice to the baseball Gods.
No one will be that upset if you make a mistake and own up to it. Doubling down for your ego is the worst thing you can do
…unless you want to make the Majors, then apparently its a requirement 😂
@@MyBiPolarBearMax I disagree you see managers arguing even if then know it's the right call. They argue if the call goes against them. So admitting you made a mistake won't stop getting reemed.
I'll never understand why the umpires cannot decide for themselves to put the call in to NY to "adjudicate" what happened on the field. **Especially** in situations like this.
Before I watch the breakdown... what I saw: The Umpire put his hand up. I have to assume someone called for time, and it looks like the Umpire grants it. Should be a no pitch. 3-2 count.
Update: Oof. What a clownshow MLB is becoming.
Big Ups for DuckTales.
Three ejections this season at Oracle Park, 1 against the Brewers and now 2 against the Marlins.
So in a perfect game that's actually strike 3 because the batter wasn't ready as per the pitch clock rule
Alternate perfect game: there’s no pitch clock in a late game high leverage situation.
@@gregarious119rules changing based on what inning it is doesn’t sound like a perfect game to me at all
@@SlideStep_ Although I didn't advocate for that I can see how it was implied. I hereby modify my statement to "Alternate perfect game: there’s no pitch clock."
Holy mackerel! Thank you CCS
Well, this was something. Congratulations for CCS for solving the mystery.
Worse is that after the pitch was thrown the umpire stood up with his hands up for time. So does he even remember that he called time?!?!
IIRC there was some great lip reading done on this (by Jomboy), they were going in circles and circles - the ump would say "you can't call time," the Marlins would say "YOU called time," the ump would say "I can call time whenever I want." the players would say "so it was time out then," and the ump goes back to "you can't call time."
That's why the Marlins guys were getting so pissed off
Once again, letting the officials on field get some help from the replay team in New York would allow the right calls to be made - in this case, the pitch clock violation by the batter, which would trump the other errors by Hudson. But no, apparently they can't do that. Is the goal to get the call right or not?
Exactly. It’s so much BS it’s vomit inducing
It is not necessarily to get the call right but to speed up the game. And of course, with all that arguing, it certainly didn’t speed up the game.
One umpire on the field should have a headset that is in communication with NY just for issues like this.........quick talk and theyd get it right and play on..........NCAA can do it, so can MLB
I'm a Giants fan and they definitely got away with that one . Nice breakdown !
Ditto. I didn't like the pitch clock, but I've been pleasantly surprised with how well it's worked. Mostly. When it goes wrong, though, it goes really wrong.
I still have to wait for the moment when an ump admits he did a mistake.
Joyce did.
@@Niel2760 Not during the game though. I think that might be what Thomas is referring to.
@@Niel2760 Okay I have to rephrase. "... when an ump admits on the field he made a mistake"
Your level headed explanation has no place on the internet. /s
Well done
This wasn't just a disaster, it was an atrocity. A lapse in judgment over a poorly implemented rule led to Hudson losing control of the game. If that wasn't bad enough, Hunter threw gasoline on the fire with even worse situation handling. Here's hoping this crew and the others use this as a learning experience.
This is a new rule and there will be some bumps in the road.
Russia invading Ukraine is an atrocity. The English language is powerful and precise. You are a drama queen. An umpire made an error in a baseball game. It’s entertaining show biz, but it’s still a game. Atrocity- an extremely cruel or wicked act usually involving physical violence. Hopefully this will be a learning experience for you in regard to the use of proper language.
@@rayray4192 Wholeheartedly agree about Russia, but I don't think the term is out of place when we know we are referring to a game. I am a professional chef and there are a lot of recipes on line that I would describe as an atrocity if the word came to mind. Watch Ramsay make Carbonara. That sir is an atrocity!!! 😆
@@rayray4192Jesus Christ man can we not use obvious hyperbole anymore without you getting triggered. Words are powerful in context only not on their face

So, Multiple Umpires don't know what they're doing in the moment, yet again.
Understood.
Look at all the time we are saving with this pitch clock.
ya, the average game length is 2 hours shorter with the pitch clock.
I'm very glad to hear an umpire say that mistakes should be owned up to. If only the crews would just take a bite of humble pie now and then. It would improve the game immensely.
The umps are so jacked up this year. It’s either MLB or the umpires themselves. Or both. It’s okay to be wrong and admit it
Imagine the gaslighting opportunities against the Marlins in that conversation. "You never called time, Jacob. It's all in your head. You're crazy."
The pitch clock has sped up the game but it is a complete disaster resulting in more ejections. They should get rid of the pitch clock at the end of the season.
This could all be rectified by making pitch clock violations reviewable.
Just watched an A ball game Thursday night. Zero pitch clock violations and the game moved right along. I wonder if this will work itself out as more players from the minors become big leaguers. Seemed like pitches were being thrown at 15 seconds, it was a beautiful thing.
It’s amazing to me how 2-man and 3-man umpire crews in the minors have this nailed down pretty well, but all 4 clowns at the MLB level can’t get it right.
Yes, this is a new rule and you have some old habits that are hard to break. The pace of baseball today reminds me of when I used to be a fan of the game. I've actually watched a few games this year, something I hadn't done in almost 10 years.
Pace of play is inherently a communist concept. Woke Manfred has ruined the game in an effort to shave off a few minutes, just to appease the whole ‘woke’ crowd. This will not make the blacks watch more baseball. He failed.
@@CommonSense823 Difference is, MiLB umpires are under the immense pressure that they could be released at any time. MLB guys... Well, not so much.
@@bobloblaw1180 exactly.
The pitch clock is a terrible idea. I can see this becoming a huge problem come playoff time if the right calls aren’t being made. People watched baseball for ALL these years before the pitch clock, they would continue to watch it without it. Need to get rid or it
In the playoffs they can add three more umpires just to keep track of the pitch clock ;)
This whole scenario got a big chuckle out of me. J.D didn't get ball called. Pitcher should of never throw the ball lolol
I completely disagree with you, Lindsay on your analysis because it is the main reason right here. The hitter was in violation before the umpire call for time. He was not set and ready for the pitch until :03. If we’re going to strictly by the pitch clock here, the batter should have been assessed with a strike, which would’ve made it strike 3 and the batter would be out.
Then we get to Marvin Hudson, Hunter Wendlestedt and how the Giants and Marlins handled everything. The inadvertent signal for a time wouldn’t of happened had they made the correct call
Do you remember when baseball was played by the players and not the umpires?
you have a crew that is overwhelmed with the new rules and they blew it
Umpires screwed the pooch on this one.
Wow this is the first time I have seen this channel blatantly call out an umpire and say they were wrong. Usually there's some crazy reach for an excuse to defend the umpires. But finally you just came out and said they were wrong. Didn't think you were capable of it. Glad to finally see it.
Things are getting out of hand, these two you can't blame on the Marlins -- the guy wasn't set and ready (DuckTales or otherwise), and, when the umps don't give it...
Imagine if there was tech to correct this real.time.
Imagine if they used that tech, since it does exist …
If I was a pitcher, and I see the Catcher call time AND the Ump call time while I'm already throwing the ball, that will definitely affect my pitching ability. That's probably why it was a ball to begin with.
Take out the pitch clock and it fixes all of this non-sense. we're actually having players and coaches arguing about who called time or who wasn't ready quick enough. Imagine how much time was wasted having to sort out this mess, kinda counterproductive, people probably had to stay an extra 15 mins!!!!
I was at this game and we were so confused about what was going on. This is not what I thought was happening.
And of course, unlike other pro sports, the umpires in baseball don't have to explain anything to the fans in the stands nor the announcers. Such a stupid non-practice.
MLB can fix the batter and pitcher clock times with a horn or buzzer when there is a violation. This should not be the responsibility of the umpires as far as keeping times. MLB should install a horn or some sort of sound indicator that everyone can hear, just like the shot clock in basketball when a shot is not attempted within a certain time.
Lets add a clock to the game, it will make it better.
Disaster! 🤣
I never knew that the defense couldn't call time either when their pitcher is in set position or beginning his windup. I knew the offense couldn't as stated in OBR 5.04(b)(2) Comment. That's why I enjoy these videos.
In Set is one thing but mid-delivery with the intention of trying to skirt the pitch clock rule is quite another. It’s either ball four on the pitch or ball four on the expiration of time, either way not pretty.
The pitch clock thing is a disaster. If you can't sit through a baseball game for 30 extra minutes, then don't go. I'd rather sit through a normal game than have teams stop the game because of this nonsense. Baseball is ruined. I went to a minor league game the other night. No disruptions still 2 hrs 40 mins.. that's just the way it is.
I was trained to use that one hand gesture as a signal to the pitcher to not pitch the ball. Whether one considers it to be along the same lines as a time out is another discussion. What is clear is that the gesture is used to stop the pitcher from delivering a pitch. The pitch should not have counted.
dont usually see it done with the left hand so who knows what Hudson really was doing
Lol, he wasn't calling time to reset the clock. He was calling time because the umpire BLANTANTLY missed the batter was not ready at 8 seconds... When they umps are right there right, and when they are wrong they are right. We wonder why there is such a mistrust, just a complete unwillingness to be humbled, do their job, and get the call right.
Marvin Hudson has been great the last few years, but here he just simply forgot to look at the pitch clock. Hopefully this will being out improvements on how the umpires pay attention to this type of stuff
Solution: have a pitch clock mounted on the back of the catcher’s helmet. That should keep it in view for the umpire …
Our daily follies. Thank you CCS
So somehow all the umps remained oblivious to the batter violation and are calling ball 4 on an illegal timeout that the umpire himself granted. OOF
And that's before the umpire's meek time signal... Hoo boy.
I stopped watching MLB, but I enjoy watching the trainwreck videos of what they’ve done to the sport. Shame.
I guarantee that the next morning every team had a pitchers & catchers meeting where they stressed that from now on when you see the catcher make a particular sign, you step off immediately, no questions asked.
The wendelstadt school of umpiring baby
Umpires and the mlb. Need to be careful how they conduct themselves b/c pitchers are going to be told to throw at them, especially when umpires are ejecting players and mangers when they are the ones at fault.
I have a pet peeve... showing the count when the scoreboard is on and correct... (which at my levels... Correct is not a given.. or even close)... how they missed the batter PC violation is beyond me... the time was right in that he should have called the violation and strike 3 and then the pitcher would not have cared... then to let the pitch stand after you signaled time... strike 2... I'm normally forgiving of umpires as I am one.. but in this case... he kicked it twice in one play...
Hunter Wendelstedt is carrying the umpiring legacy of his late father, Harry Wendelstedt. My hat is off to him in respect.
Hunter is carrying about 350 lbs worth of Harry’s legacy.
So, umpire misses the batter not being ready by 8 seconds on the pitch clock, then umpire calls time (however inadvertently, doesn't matter though he did it), and then later umpire lies about not calling time. And tosses some Marlins who as much as I hate to admit it actually had a real case here. Are we ready for robo umpires yet???
If an umpire publicly lies about a call of his, how can you trust anything he says afterwards?
Just get rid the pace of rules altogether. That’s how you avoid this absolute gong show of a situation.
wasn't the catcher trying to tell the pitcher to step off? and not telling him to throw over?
Another reason to get rid of the stupid clock violation rule. It causes more confusion and wasting of time with more ejections.
"What a disaster" - Angel Hernandez, probably.
I like your channel, but things like this are why i absolutely hate MLB umps, no matter how good most of them are how if they get it righ 90+% of the time.
Just own that you made a mistake and react appropriately. My uncle was an NFL ref and you’re taught false whistles are the worst thing you can do but it has to stop there for safety no matter what.
As long as theres no repercussions for umps just doing whatever they want and making up rules and wrongly throwing people out of games, it will never change.
There has to be *some* accountability.
Look, I'm one to give the umpire the blame when they should get it, but the real blame goes to this stupid pitch clock rule to begin with.
So If Marvin Hudson, the crew chief and the ump that made the call, seemingly doesn't mind the arguing why is Hunter throwing people out? Better yet why is Hunter involved in this when it wasn't his call. The other two umpires left. Let the ump who made the call handle this.
I appreciated the duck tales theme
Thank goodness they've made the game faster ....like the inventors intended
So the unanswered question that remains is what should a catcher do in this situation where an umpire misses that the batter isn't ready by 0:08?
I don't think the Counsell play was officiated correctly either, tbh.
It's almost like baseball doesn't lend itself to precision timing. You're seeing all this friction because they're trying to impose a strict time limit where it doesn't belong.
The pitch clock has ruined the game … this is absolutely wrong and completely absurd!!
Can you explain Hudson's post-game analysis? He seems to be saying that when Stallings called time at 3 seconds and failed to state that it was for a mound visit, that was a (pitch clock???) violation on Stallings and thus an immediate ball 4 and dead ball. Although he wasn't asked, I suppose Hudson would say he called time to make the ball 4 ruling and then crouched down for the pitch simply out of instinct.
Hudson lacks the integrity to simply admit fault and move on.
@@richardbobby4992 exactly this. And nobody else will hold him accountable either. He’ll get a high score for this game when they review it.
The catcher couldn't state what time was for because the pitch was coming in. He missed the 8-second violation on the batter so he's already in the wrong. Not mental gymnastics will make the umpire right in this situation
As a non-baseball fan I’ll admit the pitch clock is doing what it’s supposed to do; draw eyes to the sport. Only, the attention it’s creating is hilarious shenanigans instead of being a better game.
100% THIS.
How many of CCS's videos have been about pitch clock violations this season? Whatever the number is, those could have been videos covering, I dunno, actual game action (like we had in last season's vids).
Exactly, its a sht show. Making the game look like an embarrassment all because they're saving like 20 mins of the game.
Horrible take. The new rules will impact the game much more in the long run than the occasional s house or two as they iron out the kinks.
They need to get rid of this new pitch clock rule it's stupid
Please get rid of this stupid pitch clock rule. Whatever time is saved is erased by umpires that cant get with it.
The umpire actually is not calling time. Notice he has 3 fingers up signaling 3 balls. I believe he was starting to show the pitch count and had to crouch. His hand would have been open had he been calling time with his right hand up as well. I can’t tell if genus holding an indicator but it doesn’t look like it.
Love the duck tales throw back
the rules need to go
Should have been able to go to video
That would’ve solved a lot “hey maybe the catcher has something that I missed and we should check on that”. Instead “nah let’s double down on the news we created”
These umpire disasters will continue as long as they continue to employ sub-standard officials. Most of these umpires in MLB today absolutely suck! Where are Doug Harvey and Dutch Rennert when you need them?
6 feet under........and if CZcams was around then they wouldve made appearances as well
4:29 he almost threw him out😂
Baseball has to do like hockey does, and adjust the pitch clock rules now. There are too many moving parts.
These rules have been poorly thought out and poorly implemented. The arbiters don't even know how to implement them on the field.
The pitch clock is an unmitigated disaster. Even if they "fix" all these problems next season, it still is happening now. The pitch clock needs to go and go permanently. It is not the way baseball was conceived or intended to be. Wait until a game is won/lost due to a clock violation. Oh, wait, that already happened. Wait until a playoff game is won/lost on a violation, or worse yet a world series game or even the series itself. If my team loses (speaking as a fan) as a player or manager or owner I would feel cheated. If my team won because of that it would feel like a hollow win that wasn't earned. Either way it's not good for baseball.
Pitch clock violation on the umpire for not being alert to the rules
Clocks have no place in baseball.
This is turning into the Jerry Springer Show.
Does the batter have to be completely inside the box stripe or simply have no part of his person be outside the box stripe? It looked like to me, that the batter avoided being outside the box stripe, for he was on that stripe. Of course, the batter was not looking at the pitcher by the 8-second mark anyway. That was violated by the batter for sure.
There's an easy solution to this. Pitch clock happens. batter still has one timeout to use whenever. All the rules are the exact same. The only difference is that once there are only 8 seconds left on the pitch clock, the pitcher can throw weather the batter is ready or not, and it's on the batter to be ready by that time.
This lets the umps not worry about if the batter is ready on time. It keeps the number of games ending in a stupid way down. It solves this entire problem
We all have to realize that baseball already has robot umps: MLB umps are incapable of making mistakes let alone own up to the concept of fallibility.
Just get rid of this damn clock. Please.
This is a total embarrassment to Major League Baseball. Two times this has happened and it’s a joke on how the umpires handled this.
Forget the time call. Should have been a violation on the hitter
Am I the only one seeing the home plate ump put up a three? Does not look like he’s calling time to me. Idk what he’s doing but not great!
Let's see....the ump fucked up not calling the batter for the violation....Marlins got screwed. Then....the ump fucked up by calling timeout in the middle of the pitcher's delivery (which of course affects the way he throws the damn ball) and then allowed the play to stand!!! WTF?!? And not just one ump, but all four of them refuse to own up to that. Marlins screwed again. MLB umpires are a joke and a disgrace to the game.
Accountability? Forget about it, not gonna happen. If anyone else in MLB - players, managers, coaches - sucked at their jobs as bad as umpires do, they would be long gone.
yeah, the catcher throwing his hands up at 2 seconds had no effect on the pitch either, right lol
So was Hunter wendlstedts fake out the actual toss? Because I didn't see Schumacher get tossed.
But seriously how much better would the situation been if that batter hit a home run hahah (plate umpire but it’s ball 4) hahah
conclusion: MLB needs to get rid of these grumpy old umpires, how can a sport be affected SO much by human factors
