E72 - Paul Clemons Ejects Assistant Hitting Coach Derek Shomon After Ball & Strike to Correa

    The flippant way that Bacchus sent Shildt to the showers almost made it feel like he was baiting him and wanted to show him how little he cared about what he was going to do. Even after the game is over, this particular ejection feels like it's just meant to keep the tension up the rest of the series... So, honest question for those who are umps in the comments, is a casual ejection more insulting or less insulting than an ejection with a little panache? Where does that fall in the game/crowd management part of the equation?

    • @UmpireClassroom
      @UmpireClassroom Pƙed 6 hodinami

      The less dramatic ones are a good way to demonstrate your control of the game, and make the ejected person seem to be the only one really upset in the situation. But, they all have a time and a place. If he's going into the dugout for an ejection, it will usually have a bigger mechanic. When the coach comes to you, especially balls and strikes, it doesn't need to be big cause everyone knows. But finally, note there is a big difference between umpiring at this level, and working anything in youth or high school sports.

    Back when I still had two good knees and was umpiring we used to work a lot of fastpitch softball Sunday doubleheaders in the fall between travel teams. One particular Sunday my partner was being given grief about his strike zone for 7 innings from the coach in the 3B dugout. The coach never crossed the line. After the first game my partner and I went to the parking lot to change and hydrate a little. Upon returning for the start of the 2nd game the same coach continued riding my partner about his strike zone in the first game during the lineup exchange. My partner said to me, "I want him gone.". I replied, "If you want him gone, toss him. I have no problem with it.". The coach spent the second game in his car and the game went off without a peep from the 3B dugout.

      Why did he "allow" the coach to give him grief for (and I quote...) "7 innings"? Are you kidding me?!?!?! No. And then he dumps the ejection on you for the second game? No! At ANY level of baseball, the VERY first time ANYONE inside the fences disputes anything regarding judgement, you address it. If I'm on the plate and someone wants to argue balls and strikes, I give them a hand up and say, "Let's not have any more of that, please. If you continue you will be ejected." On the second offense, they are ejected. 7 innings of grief?!?!? No. Absolutely not. Warn and eject.

    As a retired college and semi-pro ump, I find this play very interesting. In my point of view, as the plate ump I’m watching my ump mates move as a team. I start moving down the 3rd base line. I’m watching the runner rounding 2nd and glance to make sure that my partner at the 1st area is making his move to cover at home plate. I see the coach at 3rd is signaling the runner to hold up. I also see the runner stutter step near 3rd and watching the catcher move near 3rd. I see the runner, not looking at the coach but looking instead at the catcher. The runner changes gears and moves rear fast to 3rd and round the bag towards home plate. I see if the catcher is going to shift his feet to the left and intercept the runner, but the catcher stays adjacent to the foul line without moving left. The runner’s speed will not allow him to make a severe turn at 3rd and run directly down the foul line. My instinct and experience tell me that the runner’s path will be to the outside of the foul line. The catcher also knows this but the catcher will not shift to his left to avoid obstruction. As the ump, I do NOT hold my left arm out to signal a temporary penalty, because there has NO obstruction by the catcher. FINAL call: no obstruction and the runners is out at home.
