- / @youcartv Hi guys! Volvo Cars Safety Center celebrates 20 years! On average, it crashes at least one brand new Volvo a day. And it has been instrumental in preserving Volvo Cars’ position as a leader in automotive safety to this very day.
The Volvo Cars Safety Centre crash lab is a multifunctional facility that allows Volvo Cars safety engineers to recreate countless traffic situations and accidents, and perform tests that go beyond regulatory requirements.
The lab contains two test tracks of 108 and 154 metres long respectively. The shorter of the two is moveable and can be positioned at an angle between 0 and 90 degrees, allowing for crash test at different angles and speeds, or to simulate a crash between two moving cars. Cars can be crashed at speeds up to 120 km/h.
Outside, there is room for performing tests like roll-over crashes and run-off road scenarios, whereby cars are launched into a ditch at high speeds. Here, Volvo Cars also offers rescue services opportunities to hone their life-saving skills, as it did earlier this year when it dropped new Volvos from a height of 30 metres to simulate the heavy damage found in extreme crash scenarios.
Inside the main hall, an enormous crash barrier is used for testing various frontal, rear and side impacts. Weighing an astonishing 850 tonnes, it can be moved around if needed with the help of air cushions.
Additionally, there are around two dozen other fixed and movable barriers that are used in crash testing, including a moose-like structure to simulate crashes involving these animals.
During crashes, the car, the crash test dummies and the barriers are fitted with sensors that allow Volvo Cars engineers to register the entire chain of events in detail. Dozens of ultra-high definition cameras also film the crash test from every angle imaginable.
Before a physical crash test, the car model in question has already gone through thousands of computer simulated crash tests. All the data generated by these test is then used by Volvo’s engineers to develop safer cars.
As the company moves towards an all-electric future, the Safety Centre has in recent years been equipped and prepared specifically to safely execute electric car crash tests as well.

Funny thing is, Volvos are fast too. They also have really attractive, comfortable interiors. That's why I love Volvos -- safety is paramount, but they don't slack on the other things as a compromise.

Even in the dropped Volvos, the passenger compartments are still surprisingly intact. Goes to show how good the impact absorption is.

My parents drive a Volvo XC90 and the sensors and safety features are really nice. We were on the freeway and there was a water truck that spilled a bunch of water all over the road. It was able to slow down and tightened the seatbelts before we even got 1000 feet from it.
For a company that is all about safety, this is some of the most irresponsible driving I've seen in years.

I LOVE my XC 90. I feel very safe in it. And I am a volunteer Fire Fighter/Rescue technician and the running joke at the station is IF I am ever in a serious accident, I will probably be OK, but they will play Hell cutting me out due to the superstructure around the passenger compartment.
I have only seen THREE fatalities in an XC 90 on the internet, all three were in Europe and all three ran under a semi trailer. Two went as far as the "B" pillar and the third was hit from behind by another semi AFTER already having run under the trailer and this went as far as the "C" pillar. NO CAR IN THE WORLD COULD HAVE SAVED THEM. I stand by my Volvo.

Having served as a fireman for 30 years and attended some horrific road traffic accidents I can only applaud Volvo in their crash testing regime. It was always a problem for us as cars developed so quickly and a balance has to be made when rescuing casualties as we always used old cars for training.
I am so happy I drive such a safe car!!! I own a C30 and my next car will be a XC40. I'll keep driving Volvos because I want to be safe !!!!

Reminds me when a truck tried to overtake another truck, coming towards me at about 90kph. I had tenths of a second to decide whether to take the trucks head-on or dodge into the ditch.

There wasn’t much left of the S80, but I was fine except for a scratch on my forearm and nausea. This car definitely saved my life. Volvo for life.

Someone caused me to crash in my '08 V70. Written off and I was absolutely gutted. But for a 30mph collision (I went into their side with no chance to react) I didn't even have the slightest whiplash or anything. Only felt where the seatbelt had locked and ringing in the ears from the airbags. I was so impressed that I replaced it 2 days later with an '08 V70.
Volvo's have stood out as safety leaders since I first noticed the brand back in the late 1960's as a young driver. They have been the leaders in innovations all this time, rigid bars added to the doors, 3 point seatbelts, many other features ahead of all the other makers.

And something that wasn't said yet... this kind of crash test is also done to simulate high speed crashes because they calculated that the same amount of energy generated when cars hit concrete by releasing them from the crane is the same energy generated when a car crashes at a very high speed.
