Extreme Crash Test - Brand New Volvo Cars drops from 98 FEET / 30 METERS

- It is the most extreme crash test ever executed by Volvo Cars, and a crucial one. Extrication specialists often use cars crashed at the Volvo Cars Safety Centre to hone their life-saving skills.
To allow rescue services to prepare for any possible crash scenario and to simulate the forces that erupt in the most extreme crashes, beyond what can be simulated with ordinary crash testing, Volvo Cars recently took equally extreme measures. For the first time, it dropped several new Volvos multiple times from a crane, from a height of 30 metres.
This approach helped create enough damage to adequately simulate the damage found in the most extreme crash scenarios: think of single-car accidents at very high speed, accidents whereby a car hits a truck at high speed, or accidents whereby a car takes a severe hit from the side.
In such situations, people inside the car are likely to be in a critical condition. Therefore the priority is to get people out of the car and to a hospital as quickly as possible, using hydraulic rescue tools known in the industry as ‘jaws of life’. Extrication specialists often talk about the golden hour: they need to release and get a patient to the hospital within one hour after the accident has happened.
“We have been working closely together with the Swedish rescue services for many years,” says Håkan Gustafson, a senior investigator with the Volvo Cars Traffic Accident Research Team. “That is because we have the same goal: to have safer roads for all. We hope no one ever needs to experience the most severe accidents, but not all accidents can be avoided. So it is vital there are methods to help save lives when the most severe accidents do happen.”
All findings from the crashes and the resulting extrication work will be collected in an extensive research report. This report will be made available free of use to rescue workers elsewhere, allowing them to benefit from the findings and further develop their life-saving capabilities.
Usually, rescue workers get their training vehicles from scrapyards. But these cars are often up to two decades old. And in terms of steel strength, safety cage construction and overall durability, there is a vast difference between modern cars and those built fifteen to twenty years ago. And new Volvos are made of some of the hardest steel found in modern cars.
This makes it crucial for rescue workers to constantly update their familiarity with newer car models and review their processes, in order to develop new extrication techniques. In other words, these training sessions can mean the difference between life and death. So at the request of the rescue services, Volvo Cars decided to step things up a notch.
“Normally we only crash cars in the laboratory, but this was the first time we dropped them from a crane,” says Håkan Gustafson. “We knew we would see extreme deformations after the test, and we did this to give the rescue team a real challenge to work with.”
A total of ten Volvos, of different models, were dropped from the crane several times. Before the drop, Volvo Cars safety engineers made exact calculations about how much pressure and force each car needed to be exposed to, in order to reach the desired level of damage.

ask tesla with the highest safety rating of all time
@@DavidHernandez-kc1el i know the tesla is the really safe company too, but it performed poorly at torso protection during pole crash test, because not absorbing energy of crash as needed. so in my opinion, i think tesla needs to crash test more.
@@NormalMark1_Original what?? the pole test on the side??? they literally got a 5 star rating on that and they have never rated that to a suv in decades

As Jeremy Clarkson once said, you never know why Volvos are so expensive until you crash one.
Jeremy Clarkson said, you never know why SAABs are so expensive until you crash one. Not Volvos
@@idestroyer9115 I remember the segment they did about Saab, and I remember Clarkson saying that, but I felt like way back when he bought an XC90 for his wife, and was talking about a vehicle to put his family members in, he also made that comment.
But I'm probably just mixing the two up. Sadly, that was a long time ago.

It’s quite remarkable to see how the survival area for the passengers remains almost intact after, not 1, but 2 different drops. I bet no other manufacturer would be able to achieve it.

Volvo actually leads in safety for automobiles.
They need to add reliability and hit the bang going.
Great video.
Reliability is an issue with volvo?
That’s news to me and my XC70 with 300,000 miles and my V70R with 245,000 miles, and the S80 I sold to my friend a few years ago that now has 460,000 miles.
@@Getfuqqedfedboy New Volvo's are not reliable tho :/
@@Getfuqqedfedboy It’s a good thing you have positive experiences with Volvo. I like Volvo a lots and have done some more readings on them since 2000 and can vouch for the safety record.
However I testify of a colleague’s 2012 xc90 that spends 70% or more of the time at the workshop due to one or two faults. Not only his own. In other cities in Ghana here, you will notice a lot of Volvo’s at the workshop. Current electronic technology applies to all new cars but I am not motivated to purchase a car when I see them most of them spend their time at the workshop than being on the road.
Most user reviews on Volvo from different websites agree on the safety but name reliability as a huge demerit. As for expert reviews, well they are also questionable. Do you think I will be motivated to buy a car that sits more at the workshop?

They don't lead Mercedes Benz
@@INTERNATIONALvids lol darling go read up on Volvo history versus Mercedes history... You will be surprised how many safety items were actually Volvo firsts... In addition, the reputation Mercedes has for unquestionable reliable and safe cars, come from the cars they built during the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s. After that they have become a volume pusher and new money status seeker. Back in the 60’s Mercedes Benz was a direct competitor to Rolls Royce - now they are not even close to Rolls-Royce anymore. They are compared to BMW, Audi and sometimes in the case of the A-Class to the VW Golf! Mercedes may be selling more vehicles than ever and making record profits but their vehicles are not built to nearly the same standards they used to.

I don't buy cars new, only used without warranties. So I totally stay clear of all European cars made after mid 1990s, Mercedes and Volvo included because they are high maintenance and often not the best reliability. I've owned over 40 cars in my life over last two decades, just not all at the same time. I often buy them crashed and fix them. I've been involved in some car crashes myself, one severe. I have a lifelong hobby shopping for cars at insurance auto auctions where most cars are totaled. Because i fix them, I see hands on how these cars deal with crashes, and many I see at insurance auctions completely demolished.
My preference is Japanese vehicles with some exception for American pickup trucks.
I was just saying Mercedes were pioneers or at least at forefront of automotive safety. I could care less about the brand. I prefer Toyota's Lexus over Mercedes if out of warranty.
Mercedes made the first internal combustion engine cars.
I'm aware Volvo innovated many safety features.
Mercedes innovated some of these systems and was early adopter of many other safety systems.
brakes on all four wheels

Great stuff Volvo! I love their endless quest for safety. Amazing.
Incredible! I didn't know that Volvo was so strong. I am turning a fan!
Volvo goes to great lengths to test the safety of their cars! Truly amazing.
Rear safety is something that needs to be much more emphasized
So crazy!!! Love Volvo Cars
The way how the engineers proceeds the crash test were like dropping off a Nokia 3310
I KNEW someday volvo will be doing something like this, look how they even crash an already crashed car twice
I have a feeling the cars they used in these drop tests are the ones they filmed in those launch commercials a few years back, especially the 90s series cars as all of them are the pre-facelift model if you look closely, even the colours and rims match the ones that appeared in their commercials.

What kind of method is that? What are they doing that for?
They test all techniques and methods for rescuing people from crashed cars.
Report conclusion: If the crashed car is a Volvo there is no need for extrication specialists. Driver opened the door normally and walked away.
Strong 💪 Car's
Just nice looking trick, nothing else what other companies wouldn't do.
Let's check what was the speed of car JUST before it hit the ground.
Potential Energy at height 30m = PE = m*g*h
Kinetic Energy increases while Potential Energy decreases and vice versa.
Thus: KE = 0.5 * m * v2
If we rearrange formula for v, we get
v = 87km/h just before the crash, for height 30m.
87km/h looks like other cars get the pretty much the same damage results ;)
Just a reminder EURO NCAP front crash test = 50km/h
