I just really hope that Switch 2 is compatible with Switch 1 games. Not only would you have a huge backlog, but overclocking the switch has shown that some games can look immediately better with more performance. So for some switch games, you'd immediately get a boost in graphical fidelity. Furthermore, devs could even push higher texture packs or updates for switch 2 users.

I've been saying for a year now the next system will be 4X the graphics of the Switch. That is a fantastic jump for Nintendo type games. Zelda and Mario will look and play much better and have fake DLSS 4k. But warzone or something is still going to play like crap on the next Nintendo system.

I will say, NVIDIA did get hacked last year and the actual SoC for what is most likely Swtch 2/Plus/Neo/Super/whatevertheycallit was inside of that hack.
Even more funnily, it was inside API files for something called "NVN2" (NVN is the name of the API that NVIDIA and Nintendo made together specifically for Switch)
As for the specs, they are actually greater than the Orin NX, in pretty much all regards, especially thanks to a Linux Kernel update giving the CPU for the T239/Drake SoC in that NVN2 File away, so we have GPU and CPU core spec data now for Switch 2.
    As for those specs
    CPU: 8 A78C CPU Cores.
We can determine this as the Linux Commit says 8 CPU cores in a 1 Cluster config, and because Orin uses A78AE (4 cores per cluster), A78C is of the same generation but meets the "8-Cores, 1 Cluster" config. Also because I doubt they are shoving 8 X1 CPU cores in this.
GPU: 12SMs of an Ampere-derived GPU, so that means 1536 CUDA cores, 12RT cores, and 48 Tensor cores, quite a bit bigger than the Orin NX's 8SM GPU.
Also, an interesting note for DLSS specifically is that Drake/T239 shares the Optical Flow Accelerator (OFA) from Orin, which the OFA is what allows DLSS Frame Generation to work on Lovelace, the reason I'm pointing this out is that the Orin OFA is unique from the Ampere one which NVIDIA says is unsupported (At least at this moment).
So there is a chance if the Orin OFA is closer to the Lovelace one that DLSS-FG could be enabled.
As for what those CPU and GPU specs mean relative to Orin NX, it means an upgrade across the board.
The A78C being a 1-Cluster CPU dramatically reduces latency between cores which would likely ramp up the multicore score while also allowing it to clock higher-per-watt due to not needing multiple clusters to worry about.
Along with that, the C in A78C stands for Cache, which for gaming especially as we see with the AMD X3D CPUs, is important. So not only would it have a more consistent score between Single and Multithread CPU perf, but in cache-dependent workloads it would be ahead of the A78AE in Orin NX.
The GPU meanwhile is so big that it's pretty much a Laptop RTX 3050 GPU crammed into an SoC that is going to fit into a tablet (The reason why it may not be 8nm like Orin NX).
Now people familiar with that GPU's Memory woes may be worried, but, 2 things to consider.
    1. Tegra SoCs are unique and actually the GPU in them can access CPU L2 and L3 Cache so that A78C having a lot of L3 cache would pretty much give it its own version of Infinity Cache if the developers deemed the hit to CPU Cache perf was warranted.
    2. The Switch 2 will use a unified memory bus, so instead of being locked to 4GB like the 3050 Laptop, it could stretch to say, 6GB, (8GB total, 1GB OS, 1GB CPU, 6 to GPU) if a developer is smart enough on optimizing their CPU side memory requirements.
Also, interesting note, at least when docked, if they just /imported the clock speeds from the current Switch to T239/Drake, it would already hit over 2.3TFLOPs, well in excess of the PS4, and that is before you factor in all the architecture improvements and also DLSS.
If they could clock it higher than 768MHz docked (Likely would be the case if it wasn't 8nm), it would surge even further, and an interesting note is it could theoretically match the Series S's TFLOP rating if they hit 1.3GHz (4TFLOPs).
Now, don't read that as saying "Switch 2 as strong as Series S?!??" read that as saying "This thing's GPU is massive, and with modern process nodes it could hit a clock speed that is closer to Series S than anything last-gen if Nintendo wanted it to"

If there is a Switch 2 and the hardware from Nvidia has tensor cores, they might not be used for RT, but instead for DLSS-like features. This is especially important for the handheld mode, where they'd be able to tune the best balance between looks and battery life by lowering the render resolution while upscaling it using DLSS.

The difference between a GTX 1650 and a RTX 3050 even at the same “Bench score” in games is probably big enough to give Nintendo something that can play most games at the above performance levels. As well consoles are lose leaders and if they really wanted to they could make the “Switch 2” not backwards compatible with switch games and therefore making everyone instantly have to buy new versions of the same game. I don’t think they would do that, but it’s not like Nintendo hasn’t done something like that before. I’m excited to see what is possible with a switch 2.

We already know the entire render config and it's not an Orin. It's more powerful than single gpc orins like nano, and more powerful than this nx, which is a binned version of the AGX with half it's shaders on GPC binned. (Disabled). A single t239 GPC (switch 2) has 50% more SM's (12) than a t234 GPC (8). In order to have more SM's, than switch 2, Orin requires multiple GPC's. Which means more space, double the transistors and associated silicone for connecting a GPC, heat, and power draw. The max power orin is the AGX (this is the NX), which has 2 GPC's, and all SM's functional. On both the Orin and switch 2, there are 128 CUDA shader Cores per SM so:
      Orin NX: 1024 CUDA shaders.

I haven't really kept up with the leaks that much, but I doubt they're going to go that far with a generational leap The switch was outdated hardware when it launched by a good margin. So I feel like it's got to be outdated again to keep up similar pricing. I feel like it's going to be a 6 core 12 thread and maybe like 600ish range for the GPU cores. They might be testing with what Austin is talking about, but I feel like they're definitely going to cut down by a huge portion. It is common for the industry too build dev kits that are more powerful than the final launch after optimizations and we'll do the same with less hardware. The thing is it going to be high end enough as when the switch 2 ages like 5 years will the cpu and gpu power be enough

Só imaginem a possibilidade do próximo Nintendo Switch vir com chip snapdragon focado somente em usar no modo portátil e outra versão com hardware para usar no modo dock

It makes sense for Nintendo to switch to the Samsung + AMD Exynos, it may not be the best but its massively more powerful than the Tegra X1, RDNA support and benefits from the open source drivers and softwares by AMD but its clear its staying team green

720p upscaled to 1080p with dlss at 60fps with higher graphical fidelity on handheld mode wouldn't be to bad.

They would need the AI features of the t234 for DLSS, so i am pretty sure they'll keep them in. What they would get rid of would be the redundancy features, as the switch wouldn't benefit from calculating the same things twice.

What if the put the nx in the switch and the orin in the dock sell them separately and make it where the handheld is a great handheld but u have a option to dock it and use the orin kit for a true console experience

Neither is realistic nor smart. It would be a massive waste of money for both you and Nintendo, those chips have almost a full third of their die area dedicated to assisting a smart vehicle so it doesn’t crash and kill you, an AI focused CPU, a very heavily compute oriented GPU.
The only thing a console would share this chip is the GPU micro architecture and nothing more

Same chip but with 1280-1536 cuda cores on 5nm lithography from Samsung. Frequencies will be massively lowered in handheld mode to give a tdp of less than 15W and in desktop mode of 25-35W.

in theory the Dock could house a SoC and when docked use DLSS to upscale 4k

    • @Ashiodyne
      @Ashiodyne Před rokem +1

No, it would require a graphics driver restart every single time you dock/undock if not most likely crash your game while you are at it. Off the table entirely and would create issues with developers as they’d have to develop games for 2 devices in essence. It would even create issues for Nintendo’s own developers.
Just expect clock speed shifts between both modes and not much beyond that. Maybe the DLSS cores will be disabled in handheld and active in docked mode
