  • @AveSicarius
    @AveSicarius Před 8 měsíci +45

    To be fair Rhaegar was more of a poet and artist than a Knight, he apparently took to Knightly endeavours like a fish to water, but it was never what he was known for.
    Plus all his combat experience was related to tournies and not actual war. By the time Robert met Rhaegar at the Trident, the former had been fighting for months in brutal conflict, and was at his absolute pinnacle of combative skill, meanwhile Rhaegar had never fought someone with the intent to kill him on an actual battlefield.
    This difference in experience is, why, I think that Rhaegar used a sword and Robert used a hammer. The sword, to Rhaegar, was probably a weapon of myth and legend, something that the songs demanded a knight use, but unless it was the Morning Star that Arthur Dayne used, which could cut through anything apparently, that's a terrible weapon for fighting another warrior in high quality plate. Meanwhile Robert had a massive Warhammer, which could have easily caused lethal injuries on any location it landed, smashing bones and crushing organs even through the armor Rhaegar wore.
    If anything the fact the fight went on for so long suggests that Rhaegar was more than an equal, he just wasn't experienced enough to actually win the fight.

He even started his warrior training in earnest considerably later in life than most Westerosi nobles, only after he became convinced that he has a role to play in the prophecy. Much about Rhaegar was smoke and mirrors, and it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case for his combat prowess too.

      It doesn’t cut both ways, because at the end of the day we *know* Robert is a superhuman beast, but apart from this fight we have no indication that Rhaegar is anywhere near that level. Whatsoever.
      I’m not saying that Robert was swarmed and Rhaegar had people attack him in the middle of the duel, what I’m saying is that Robert could have been fatigued, already with minor wounds or injuries etc, and that this is more plausible than the other way around because this was Rhaegar’s first battle of the war, unlike Robert. On top of this we can infer from Robert’s character that he may have been quite reckless in his pursuit of Rhaegar and picked up some problems along the way.
      Rhaegar injured Robert, but Robert sent his own maester to Barristan (instead of being under some intensive care situation) and may have only been a couple of days behind Ned considering I believe he also saw the corpses of Elia and her children before advanced putrefaction, though I would have to double check to be sure.

Almost none of the major players, including Robert had any actual battle experience before Robert’s Rebellion since they were mostly really young men. So, just like Rhaegar, Robert only had ever shown his skills in tourneys. Now, by the Battle of the Trident, Robert had been In several battles and lost only one to Randall Tarly, but we’re literally just talking like three or four battles, as far as training there’s no reason to think Robert had a lot on Rhaegar in terms of experience. Rhaegar was hardly the greatest fighter in Westeros. As you stated, Arthur Dayne with Dawn is the best. Behind him is Barristan Selmy. Then Jaime. After that, we have the White Bull, who was old but still a very skilled fighter and the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Rhaegar is maybe the 5th best.
    When Barristan is disguised as Arlan Whitebeard, he speaks to Dany and Jorah about Rhaegar. And when Dany says that Rhaegar was the best, Barristan mentions that beating knights at a tourney with a lance is not the sign of a great fighter.
    And you're also discounting something. A war hammer is like the perfect weapon against plate armour, while a sword is a sub-par weapon to fight against any armoured knight. Robert only has to get in that one good hit to kill or incapacitate his opponent, meanwhile, no matter how many blows you land, Rhaegar cannot ever cut through plate and maille with a sword. Rhaegar never married Lyanna. The show isn't canon. The importance of JON's birth is mystical, NOT political. Marriage is irrelevant. Jon is a bastard of the Targaryens.

    Rhaegar was a tourney knight, and a royal one too. He thrived in the safe environment.
    But there isn’t a tourney event for dodging warhammers

    If I recall, they fought on a river, which pretty much negated Prince Rhaegar's speed, giving Robert the advantage because of his pure strength he could move around in the water much more efficiently and effortlessly. If I also recall, Robert was a much more intelligent commander and fighter too because he knew when to run, hide, or fight depending on the situation which I think was his whole game plan to keep Rhaegar in the river during the duel.
    He ran away from Randall Tarly's force after he left Storms End because he knew he couldnt win. He hid and disguised himself and his men at the Battle of the Bells until Ned could reinforce him. Robert had a sneaky crazy good level intelligence for how powerful he was which I think surprised the Targaryen forces.

    Reminds me of a scene from the old Kevin Sorbo Hercules series where he's have a friendly sparring fight with his friend Aeolus. Aeolus is dancing circles around him, hitting him over and over, bragging about how he can land twenty hits for every one Hercules can. Then Hercules reminds him that he only needs the one hit. lol
