  • It’s estimated that just after the Civil War, one in four cowboys were African American. In his series ‘Delta Hill Riders’, photographer Rory Doyle takes us inside the often overlooked black cowboy culture within the Mississippi Delta, challenging one of America's greatest myths surrounding the Wild West.

I remember being a kid in Mississippi and the way it was seeing the Black cowboys ride thru. Everyone would always stop and stare and everyone showed respect. That was the custom. Its majestic and powerful. 🐎🌳💕🌹

Hollywood didnt know it was black cowboys . None of the wild west movies depicted the truth. Its a stolen heritage . When I see whites claiming cowboy culture and the name , it's a lie . All the western stores dedicated to this persona was enamored by the black cowboy stories , then not giving them any credit.
The orignal cowboys and indians were not white men pursuing indians but rather natives and freed slaves, when the freed slaves lived on indian reservations and were taught how to ride .

When a person thinks of a cowboy, they think of someone that is either white, or Hispanics. Black Cowboys were ignored in Hollywood, as well as the history books.

You're right because the original cowboys were black. You know how racists call black men "boys", so the black men who were doing this were called "cowboys" and of course the whole culture was later dominated by whites just like country music.

@@NuCreechure Incorrect. The cowboy tradition has it's roots in the Iberian peninsular where they are known as vaqueros. This was brought to Mexico by the Spanish and then to North America.
