- The Jackson family’s 10-acre property in rural southern Maryland feels like a community in itself. This is where Corey and Robyn Jackson are raising their five children, four of whom are continuing a family lineage of black cowboys and cowgirls that spans five generations. Nicholas, 13, leads the way as the current youth bull riding champion of the world. This is a story about the history that bonds a black family together and the legacy carried by a young prodigy.

Tbh...this is an example of historically accurate representation.
There were so many black cowboys during the Cowboy era, yet we almost never see any of that representation in media.
i love that you pointed this out
@DonaId J. Trump Vaqueros?
1 in 4 cowboys were black
@DonaId J. Trump Do you know what vaqueros are?
There were way more white cowboys
What a great father and an even better role model for his children ..
Thank You!
we wuz cowboyz!
Such beautiful loving parents and children.😊🤔❤👍🇬🇧

And that right there is why we need fathers in our lives. What a great example of human potential.
and the government says we only need a single mother and child support 🤢

Unfortunately I don’t have a good relationship with my dad. I was raised by my mom, aunt, and my Nana. My mom is a single mom. She takes care of me, my brothers, my nephews. She takes care of me with my chronic illnesses and physical disabilities along with working full time. My mom, aunt, and Nana are three of the strongest people! My Nana was a wonderful person! I miss her every day even though it’s been 21 years since she passed away.
@@fourq2049 Don't knock down single mothers, you ass
Strong faithful wife, loving and focused father = Awesome kids
This just made my day. Let's not only look at the fact mom is teaching her children Latin 🤗 I grew up a country girl and it was the best years of my life as a kid.
What a great father did you see how he didn’t just favour one child but he treated them all the same
Ive read somewhere people would be surprised how many black cowboys existed in the early west. The source i read said nearly half. I find this interesting. James P. Beckworth was a black frontiersman, one with an interesting history in California and Nevada.
Lots of people only know about cowboys through the westerns movies, movies produced during the 50's and 60's. Most of those movies not only show majority whites, but also very late times in the the westward expansion, many would be 1890's to 1910's. People came west for nearly 100 years and for a long time race and gender didn't matter.

I’m just a mexican stoner tryna make it out the hood by doing reaction videos on my CZcams channel 😅😅
I can’t stop watching Seven Hunnid on CZcams, he’s like a mexican dj ghost haha
I don't think people understand segregation was a thing, movies about white cowboys aren't for blacks? lol Segregation wasn't ended till 64 and it still took time for things to get better.
"Cowboy" ain't a color, or a race, it's a lifestyle. We got Native cowboys in SouthDakota, there're Mexican Cowboys in Texas (& all thru the South) these kids are going to grow up with values and respect for people and life. Growing up on a ranch is the best thing that could've happened to me.
It originated in mexico . That's a fact
Cowboy was term that white men came up with to differentiate the Black cowhands from the white ones. Used in a derogatory way. So "Cowboy" is a term that was meant for Black men.

As a father, I love nothing more than seeing another Dad in work. This family have aced it.
I wish media would show more African American families like this rather than depicting them as thugs and gangsters or aggressive loud women with different fathers for their children, it took me personally getting to know an African American to know that what I saw on TV is not all true. Thumbs up to this family and to Vice 👏
No such thing as African American they are te original American Indians who identity was stripped

This young man is going to do great things in his life!
A well produced documentary, with a great content.I am so proud of this family and guidance that the father gave to his children. Equally, This is a great historical and positive view of a black family trials and tribulation of life, and demonstrating to their children how to cope with success and failures. Kudos to the family, writers and the production company.
Ooowwwiii 🔥🔥🔥💯
Thank you for showing the many lives that black people have. 🙌🏾🤎🤎

Would you like to become an online friend of mine? Trust me I’m an interesting person.
Black folks live lives of nuance not stereotypes.
There are so many black cowboys in Texas, this is very common. I live in Houston and see them all the time in the country parts and on their trail rides.
Was just gonna ask if you trail ride. My family use to. Some will push through San Antonio sometimes. Love seeing them.
The whole americas
They still trail ride in Nhouston acres homes (44)
You keeping mexican culture alive and well
First positive story about black people I have seen this year... Thanks Vice News
I know that people act on camera but the way this family talks to each other makes me so happy
That dad is a real man, and an amazing father too. He’s teaching his son to keep your head high, and that sometimes bad luck is going to happen. They both took it in stride and had another good day. I hope this becomes a show, this family could probably teach us all a lot.
Much respect to both parents. Beautiful family values and beautiful family. God bless them always. Greetings and respect to all from Durango Mexico 🇲🇽
Im so proud of those kids brought me tear the part theirs grandfather wasn't there to see.
But also keep in mind that the word cowboy was a derogatory term that was given to African-American cowhands and was used as a word to the degrade men as boys, the proper term was cow hand
Interesting the farm is in Maryland. When most people think of rodeo, they think of Texas or another state in the Southwest. Pretty cool they have kept the tradition going strong
Maryland is very country don't let the location fool you
I wish i had a father more involved in my life mentally and emotionally.
I think not having this made me a stronger man and leader amongst others.
You may not have an earthly father involved like he should. But you can have a Heavenly Father that's always there for you.
This brought tears to my eyes... It's so amazing to see a representation of an underrepresented demographic that has always been there, but erased from history! Thank you for documenting this family and I hope that they inspire more POC to live out their dreams!
How many times have you heard someone say, "This ain't my first rodeo." - a real cowboy will tell it straight.
These parents seem like such beautiful examples such an amazing story
My family in Louisiana and East Texas all ride. POC are so underrepresented in cowboy culture and imagery.
Seen these guys on horseback at the Home Depot. It was cool to see and caught me off guard a bit.
I live farther south and drive that way to head to work. I will definitely be looking for them now!!
God Bless him he did great I would like to see more

This is an amazing father and son story. Really warmed up my heart!
Yes sir....wonderful words to hear. That's what the youth of this nation is lacking. Respect for others and themselves. Not being taught at a young age in schools or homes. The building block that is the foundation of a good member of society and a good person overall.
What a wonderful family and a great set of parents.
Wow he's a great bull rider and he still young and has a beautiful career ahead of him may God continue to bless him and his loving family
A life of purpose, heritage and faith. Theres really something to this lifestyle that we all could use.
My understanding is that this was a common subsequent career for some black soldiers after the Civil war
An before the civil war
What a great way to grow up. These parents need no advice!
Best Vice episode I've seen...great family...Looking forward to seeing this family in future.
This is absolutely fascinating to watch and experience
Good Job Vice , this is the kind of reporting i love to see.
great video love to see this content. Awesome family and one hell of a father that man is. One day I hope to bless my family as much as he has.
As a southern Asian accent and all….country as heck who is married to a country Oklahoma black man. I love seeing stereotypes being broken! Blessings to this family and their continued legacy.
This is so cool to see! Wishing much success to the kids n that young man! Keep leading the way Mom & Dad!
I'm from East Texas my forefathers would brake and breed horses, this touches my heart
Heeey now! My people are from Beaumont/ Port Arthur, TX (mom's side) and Gonzales/Huntsville, TX (dad's side). Both sides kept animals but my dad's side were the cowboys. Love from San Antonio
This family is wonderful to watch, very cohesive and they freely express their love for each other. You can't lose with those qualities! ⭐✨⭐
Maryland is a wonderful state with all kinds of diversity.
Interesting point. This has nothing to do with the video but Marylands geography has always made me laugh. It’s so weirdly shaped that it looks like the state as a whole is just all the awkward scraps of land that other states around it didn’t want to claim. Anyways, black cowboy culture is hella interesting to me. All the old western movies only portrayed cowboys as white people but really it’s a lifestyle that goes beyond all racial and religious bullshit which is fucking awesome.
It's so good to see other black people with the similar views, work ethics and personality as my black self.
This is awesome to see !
In the cowboy and rodeo community this is not even a surprising thing. Don't care who you are, if you can cowboy up, you are a cowboy!
Such great family values and love ! God bless this family
Every kid should get to experience this kinda life. The young man who is a bull rider, he is to be respected 💯

The term “cowboy” was a derogatory term for black cow handlers…
Nothing like being on the farm. My family have long horns, horses and all. Whole new world when your riding the tractors and horses and work with your family. We’re in MD also.

What a beautiful couple and family!!! I love this!!!!
This is so freaking cool!! What an awesome family.
Great story, I believe James Washington from the Steelers grew up similar.
Wonderful. Reminds me of my friends in Sallis, Ms. Lots of black American cowbots and cowgirls in Al, Mississippi and Texas.
This is awesome
So good to see
Just awesome. What a blessing.
Honestly black or other - doesn't matter to me much as long as long as they're loving the tradition they've kept up. Their family looks very loving and supportive. Sending love to their kid Robert! ♥ Hoping that he enjoys watching his siblings compete
The race does matter here. Black cowboys are a huge underrepresented part if our American history.
