Black cowboys: Creole trail rides showcase growing culture

- Picture a cowboy. You'll probably think of young men with wide-brimmed hats and spurred boots riding through a dusty frontier town. You probably don’t picture thousands of mostly black men and women riding through rural east Texas, blasting country and rap music.
Yet that's what descended on Columbus, Texas, this August. The gatherings, known as Creole trail rides, are growing increasingly popular across the U.S. Part horse-riding, part rodeo, and part dancing to zydeco, trail rides are rooted in the often overlooked history of black cowboys in the American west. And today, these rides also serve to build up the black community.
Follow us down the 10-mile trail to experience this unique culture, and a different image of the iconic cowboy.

I love how the horses hair was braided 😌
This is where i need to be!
Shonuff my friend it's a great life to live country living ooowwwiii 🔥🔥
My cousin loves to go to these...I can see why she has a good time. I'm pretty much a city boy now, but there will always be a special place in my heart for East Texas. Anything uplifting the black community and promoting positive vibes, I'm 100% for!
I’m curious, I always heard East Texas was Klan country? I grew up near Chicago but have family in the Mississippi Delta and Arkansas.. Is that true?
I am in the wrong state. That’s where I should be.
Me too ! Thinking or relocating.
@Pulama Terlep You CAN'T ride horses in Jersey.
Owning horses is expensive (but fun)
Everything is better here in Texas!
@@dontrustwhiteyevery1 that's not 100% true. There are trails in New Jersey you can ride on, but you'd never see someone riding one on the street randomly like in Texas.
Love my people and our History. Taking horseback riding lessons with my daughter soon. Need to make sure my kids learn about black Cowboys/Girls and the true history
Horses are great for kids. They will call you out on attitudes. My horse cowboy has no problem letting me know he's not dealing with my bad day attitude and he helps me to come out of it.
So cool to see this. I hope I run into this group on the trail one day and get to show them some love 😍
Same thing happened to me, a horse I grew to know & love, we became friends. When I got too big for my britches... he let me know. All horses see are friends, humans who love them, humans that may need their help. Horses love & frienship is everything!
Your horse is a cowboy?
@@altereddogma yeah, hat and all lol
@@ngrnmck love that reply 🤗🤣
I always think it hurts their spines to have 100-250 lbs of person bouncing around on them.
This is great.
Now more cowboy movies can be made.
This time from the black cowboy perspective.
Sorry but the vaqueros= cowboys were the first to ride horses then indians back in the 1500s you blacks were not even in America till 1619 when they brought you as slaves? You blacks started learning after the civil war in 1865 you blacks are the last to ride in America? Whites learned after the Mexican American war in 1830s. Enjoy Mexican culture
Why don’t we hear more of this? This is great! You all are awesome!
You don't want to just hear about it but be about it. Go to the Ebony rodeo or Bill pickett rodeo also. It's a great experience.
My brother was in this video the one in the Nike shirt on the midnight ride
Oh you should ride too!!
That's really great to see good for kids gives them something to do that's good clean fun.
Guys I hope that those who are bringing the culture of what our people did which was never recorded will inspire you all. A change is coming. Bless them and do appreciate what they are doing.
Sorry that is Mexican culture since the 1500 s spainards brought horses and cattle to America and the American Indians and Mexicans been riding since the 1500s when whites and blacks were not in America yet. The whites learned how to ride in the 1830s after the Mexican American war then blacks learned from whites after the civil war which was 1865. Mexicans and Indians have been riding for a hundred years from 1500 to 1600 without anyone but Mexicans and Indians in America. White men picked up the Mexican culture now you blacks have picked up our culture. Enjoy the Mexican culture.
Just FABULOUS! Ride on, Brothers & Sisters!

Ooowwwiii 🔥🔥💯🔥 dat part
Yee haw 🤠
I love being Black! We got our hands up in everything!
Research vaqueros are the first and real cowboys of the west.
Mexicans taught white men to ride and after 1868 white men taught freed blacks how to ride. Riding horses goes back into the early 1500s when spainards brought horses to america and taught their sons mexicans how to ride. In those times there was no blacks or whites in america at all. Just indians and mexicans for a hundred 100 years.
OMG this is my idea of fun, to ride with so many other people, all having fun!

Who said anything about Mexican azects?
I don’t know if you can see
Dee Dees comment but I can’t. The first cowboys were called
Vaqueros. Had NOTHING to do with black men being called “boy” I just cannot believe people are becoming so racist about past history and then get mad when the truth doesn’t fit the racist narrative?? It’s like they WANT it to be super racist??
Dumb fool we the Original People that why you and everyone hating on us do research clown lol get a life

Excellent !
IT'S SO GOOD TO KEEP LEARNING THE TRUTH!!!!!
THIS SHOULD BE TAUGHT IN "ALL SCHOOLS"!!!!!
FOR ALL CHILDREN AND ADULTS TO LEARN!!!!!!
I ALWAYS HEARD ABOUT THE "BLACK-SMITH"
I KNEW THEY WERE BLACK MEN .
I JUST COULDN'T IMAGINE WHITE MEN BEING CALLED THE "BLACK-SMITH"
BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T LIKE BLACK MEN.
SO WHY WOULD THEY USE THAT
NAME PROUDLY.
IT'S SO SADDD THAT WE DON'T LEARN THE TRUTH ABOUT HISTORY,
ESPECIALLY BLACK HISTORY.
BUT THE TRUTH WILL KEEP COMING OUT!!!!!
WE AS BLACK PEOPLE SHOULD BE PROUD OF BEING BLACK AND TEACH OUR CHILDREN AND ADULTS OUR HISTORY AS WILL AS ALL PEOPLES!!!!!
