In this mini-documentary, I cover the story of Joel Ortiz. From growing up in Boston public housing to landing a full-ride scholarship at UMass Boston to Study Computer science, where he would then steal millions of dollars in a never-before-seen financial cyber attack targeting large crypto investors and companies. What did he do with the money? Lived the life of a billionaire's son, designer clothes, private yets, taking trips to LA, you name it; before it, all came crashing down to a series of mistakes.

Stealing the amount of money a couple has been frugally saving for 30 years of their lives in order to provide their kids with a better life than they had is absolutely deplorable. Getting less time than the amount of time it took for his victims took to accrue this is a kick in the face
It's even worse when you read some of the comments here glorifying what he did and idolizing him. You can handpick out of this comment section who'd shove an elderly woman on the street for a dollar, absolutely nasty.

Craziest part of all this to me is how easy it was to draw a line from the exploits to the people. It wasn't even that they made some small OPSEC mistake and got caught, they literally just put their whole life out there and apparently assumed no one would ever come looking for them.

This video really struck a chord with me, because when I was a teenager, I was just like these guys. I just took a different path. I made my money in high school not by working a part time job, but by developing hacks for games such as Counter Strike and selling them. I very easily could have gotten into more nefarious pursuits, but I ended up taking a different path in life, and now I'm nearly done with my undergraduate studies in Computer Science, considering going for my PHD. I'm interested in the fields of cybersecurity, cryptography, and artificial intelligence.

Damn I also started developing cheats for CSGO in high school and made a lot of money while all my friends were working part time and stuff. Except instead of stopping I continued to learn and eventually made and started selling cheats for other games like Rust, Apex and EFT. I still do it to this day and it's my main source of income and I love doing it haha
It's actually legal unlike fraud, but you have a risk of getting sued if you sell too many copies and really piss off the game studio. I believe that it's a relatively legitimate way of making money and can't really be compared to sim swapping. Well.. its the sad reality which is the core behind why people go to crime; genetics. It is a part of their thinking which naturally goes there. And yes this is in all races. All you gotta do is a bit of googling and youll find similar crime gangs all over the world. Similar stupid systems. Similar reasons behind why. Similar horrific ways they torture victims. I'm surprised many of them barely served any time. Honestly it's pretty disgusting that these guys ruined peoples lives and after a few years will get to go back to living normal lives like nothing happened and for all the feds know they could have stashed some of that stolen money away somewhere.
Usually nonviolent crime doesn't land people with insanely long sentences, as should be the case. People are kept in prison for the purpose of keeping them out of the general public because they would be a threat to the general public. If someone a very dangerous person who could kill or severely disable somebody, then it makes sense to sentence that person more harshly than someone who nonviolently stole from someone else without causing any trauma.
This behavior feels especially repulsive as someone who grew up in abject poverty and chose military service as an attempt to build a foundation for my life. I'm left physically disabled and can't imagine even owning my own home, let alone a single extravagance like they threw away so carelessly. To so easily trade one's humanity for extravagant excess, while so many in the world needlessly suffer.
Take care, bro.

The funny thing is he still stayed as a skid to the end and did more social engineering than anything else. Can't code his way through and consistently had to buy tools to do it. The exploits he used isn't found by him, often ideas he found somewhere else. Even if his sentence wasn't heavy, I struggle to see how he would do "good" even after his release. You can't just get off this kind of high, especially when they are gonna be treated way worse by society after jail.
