  • Jeff Copper (digcoaching.com) is an ADHD coach and host of Attention Talk Video which is part of the Attention Talk Network, attentiontalknetwork.com.
Got ADHD? Are you overwhelmed? Overwhelm is certainly an emotional reaction, but what's the underlying cause and how do you solve for the problem? In this video, ADHD coach Jeff Copper (digcoaching.com) defines overwhelm, talks about what it is, and the obvious mindset to problem-solve for this impairment. Stating that you're overwhelmed and throwing your hands up in the air certainly doesn't resolve the problem, but getting help thinking through it might. If you struggle, watch this video. You'll find it insightful.

This makes sense. We overthink everything! Putting things out in the open, speaking outloud can help. Thanx

When I avoid the hard thinking, the overwhelm takes its place
It's probably an inbuilt reminder system that there's something I need to do, but it doesn't feel very helpful most of the time
Getting help when overwhelmed is awesome if you have people you trust

To me i think of overwhelm as an emotional reaction... you one isn't doing the hard thinking things don't get done and pile up... leading to worry and fight, flight, or freeze... in which cas the freeze part is being paralized/overwhelmed.
the trick is to realize (self-awareness) when you are in that state to pause and think... actually realize you need to think but firgure out a way to make thinking easier.

This makes sense! When I’m overwhelmed, the amount of thinking I’m trying to do inside my head, is more than what my brain can handle.
No wonder I feel so much relief when I “externalize thinking” by doing a written brain dump.

Yes! ADHD is more of a thinking impairment (in the context of problem solving) when doing so inside your head. Externalize things is makes things much easier.
Note you commented on examples related to my new intervention... i'll get back to you a bit later on that post.

I agree, and also it depends on what spectrum of ADHD you fall in. Sometimes you are highly intelligent but cannnot perform the same way neurotypical people can, so you have a lack of systems issue. Other times, you have a lack of resources issues. You can also have emotional issues. (I have Combined type ADHD and PTSD talk about a double whammy) You can have a combination of everything and more. I strongly believe that ADHD assessments lack depth and follow-up programs to help people navigate their type of ADHD.

Thank you, Coach. You've been here for years, and yes, bc of overwhelm is why, in large part, I turn to your channel each week!

Hey Jeff, just stumbled across some of your really old videos, and I was surprised to see you still active and posting! Thank you so much for breaking down this condition in ways I can understand : )

Thank you for your kind comments... yes i've posted a video each week going back to 2013. It has been a labor of love. My understanding of ADHD from years of interviewing experts has gotten me to a place where i feel i understand ADHD at a much deeper level. To that end i share what i've learned on this channel. At times i get comment that I "get it"... which is very motivating. Do you have a topic you would like me to address?
