    AMD's finally back in the HEDT space with Threadripper - But can they go toe to toe with Team Blue?
    * CORRECTION: There is a table showing the Threadripper 1900X as having a 4-core boost clock of 3.7 GHz despite having a base clock of 3.8 GHz. This is an error, and should be 4.0 GHz. Its price should also be $549. Further details are unknown at this time. Sorry about that.

    • @ltra42
      @ltra42 Před 6 lety +35

      the problem with that is "If YOU wanted to", which you won't. I was considering the 6900k for a long time and decided to wait and see what the competition will bring. At the time 6900k cost $1450 in Australia.
      After seeing 7900x and TR 1950x, why would I pay $1450 for 6900k or even 7900x when I can get TR 1950x. The 7960x 16c cost $1699 USD which will equates to ~$2500 in Australia base on how it is priced here not currency conversion (7900x $999 USD => $1349)
      I would be out of my mind if I was to pay $1399 for i9 7900x than $1439 for TR 1950x which has 6 more cores for an extra $40.
      The problem is people like you who are on your i3 and never going to buy these sort of chips and dream of scenarios where IF YOU WANT TO in your imaginary world where you imagine that you can actually afford them.
      I remember precisely what I've told my brother that I hoped intel can come up with something worth while because I WOULD RATHER BUY FROM intel. If intel sells the i9 7960x which is a 16c for $100 to $300 more than AMD 16c here in Australia I would still buy intel. But no way I'm going to pay almost twice the price for the equivalent. Actually, not really because I run NVMe as well as SLI so I want those 64 lanes. But it would be a really hard for me to decide if it's only $100 - $300 difference.

      lock 22 Intel is only a stupid company which believed that could control the CPU market. FUCK intel, with his nonsense prices... If AMD wouldn't done ryzen, now an i7 7700k would cost 500$, and for gaming we wouldn't have other choiches. Thank god that AMD hasn't gave up after fx...

      I'm having a hard time trying to understand the graph. What is the "Total system cost"?
      Is it that if one is to build a PC with a total cost of more than $2750 (CPU and other parts costs included), then i9 is a better value?
      Is it like "a product is cheaper but also a bit worse. If you're on a budget build, saving a few bucks is a better value. But if you're building a high-end one with 3 graphic cards, paying insignificantly to get a little extra performance is worth it"?

      Not to mention its much lower single-thread performance. It will do okay with boost, but it would fall apart in multitasking where the cores cannot boost much. It will probably do well for pure multithreading, though. But, at that point, an Epyc or Xeon would make more sense because you'd be looking at the specs more suited to server loads, except without ECC RAM. Honestly, it is like the lower end X299 chips. It doesn't make sense. AMD has a good and clear segmentation of consumer, workstation, and server. But, Epyc really could benefit from DDR4 3000 RAM. The Epyclc stock RAM speeds are not enough to mitigate CCX latency issues.

    I find all of this "fanboy" stuff amusing. One team of fanboys against the other. I remember the first serious PC that I built. It was AMD all the way. I SWORE by AMD. As time went on, Intel ultimately pulled way ahead. I went towards Intel quite some time ago and haven't looked back. You could have said that I was a team red fan boy years ago, but now I guess you could call me an Intel fanboy. Honestly though... I'm just the average consumer that purchases from the companies that make the most sense. AMD, then Intel. Now back to AMD for SURE! When Intel becomes the obvious choice again (and it will for a while), I'll go back without a worry. All of this competition back in the marker is fantastic! Fuck both teams, I go where I get the most out of. (I guess that makes me a computer whore? That's okay.)

    • @grannyspeachtea7764
      @grannyspeachtea7764 Před 6 lety +38

      The reason why people hate Intel is because Intel is only about the bottom line. They don't focus on innovation. They wait till AMD catches up to their IPC before they release a product that will slightly edge out that and focus on the mass market. That's a very predatory attitude. AMD brought us everything from 64 Bit to on-chip memory controllers to on-die graphics and Intel was just a fast follower even though they have billions of dollars in R&D money! That says a lot. What has Intel really done with all that R&D money? just increase IPC. No HBM, no ground-breaking innovations! AMD came up with so much innovation even though they nearly went bankrupt! The world is better off because of it.

      Where exactly have you come to the idea that Intel's compiler is "most used"? Microsoft's MSVC compiler is dominant for gaming-related software like engines, and for nearly everything else GCC (and increasingly Clang) have been ubiquitous for years. Intel's compiler, by comparison, is nowhere near as common as the open source ones.

      Its just a better binned ryzen 7 CPU, or two of them and well, I think 64 pci lanes are more attractive then the rest of the CPU really, its not hard to cap a shitty z270 board or a low tier 2011 socket.
      And people have bought intels 2011 socket for many years, so yeah, why game on that?
      Why play games on the 7900x?
      Which people are doing even though they maybe dont need everything it has to offer.
      Im more interested in the 1900x, because ,well its expensive as fuck and the 1920x and 1950x is just stupidly expensive for me even though te 1900x "only" have 8 cores, but the 1920x is very tempting though.
