AMD's finally back in the HEDT space with Threadripper - But can they go toe to toe with Team Blue?
* CORRECTION: There is a table showing the Threadripper 1900X as having a 4-core boost clock of 3.7 GHz despite having a base clock of 3.8 GHz. This is an error, and should be 4.0 GHz. Its price should also be $549. Further details are unknown at this time. Sorry about that.

alright, threadripper it is then
Okay :3
Make a cluster computer out of it and beat intel
Lost in time, wearing a hat?
Hey when are you guys going to do a PC build video for price to performance content creation?
Better use lube based thermal compound.
Are you implying that's not what Intel used, Robbaz?
Omg robazz can't believe ur on here :D !!
What were you doing here? SLACKING ON YOUR STREAMS IN THE PAST?!?! Btw, you're one of my favorite professional CSGO players who went rogue to start up his own dildo manufacturing company.
HOLY SHIT ITS ROBBAZ
+Jake James Of course he did: czcams.com/video/-VsG5ke-Izo/video.html
Don't be a fanboy people, when competition is heated between corporations, the real winner is the consumer!
Getsuu Fuma hell yeah, six core i7s, 4.3ghz turbo on ryzen 2, 2018 is shaping up to be a good year for computer builders (besides, you know those two huge problems we still have to deal with)
Finally someone gets that right!
fanboys are into S&M, they are not happy unless they are suffering abuse by their favorite corporation. Competition is bad for them, because their master has to placate customers rather than abuse them.
FINALLY THE TRUTH OF THE 2019
Welp its been a year since you wrote that Oct 2019 and intels slashed all the prices on their HEDT matching AMD - this will get interesting! Looks like you were right. Now if we could just get a 3rd or 4th x86 CPU maker :( (comon Cryix! aka cervix)
It's so fun to come back to these videos 3 years later and look at how far we've come.
Competition is a wonderful, wonderful thing.
there is only one difference between intel and amd, that matters - $700
yea, you can totally get a very beefy GPU for that, i.e: gtx 1080 Ti Founders Edition which is priced at $699.00. You can then buy a $1 cookie and congratulate yourself for a smart decision.
I'm pretty sure the new nividia graphics cards will be the 12 series not the 11 series
lock 22 if I wanted to buy an extremely expensive processor to do intensive work. I'd shell out the extra money I'd already be spending for more performance overall
the problem with that is "If YOU wanted to", which you won't. I was considering the 6900k for a long time and decided to wait and see what the competition will bring. At the time 6900k cost $1450 in Australia.
After seeing 7900x and TR 1950x, why would I pay $1450 for 6900k or even 7900x when I can get TR 1950x. The 7960x 16c cost $1699 USD which will equates to ~$2500 in Australia base on how it is priced here not currency conversion (7900x $999 USD => $1349)
I would be out of my mind if I was to pay $1399 for i9 7900x than $1439 for TR 1950x which has 6 more cores for an extra $40.
The problem is people like you who are on your i3 and never going to buy these sort of chips and dream of scenarios where IF YOU WANT TO in your imaginary world where you imagine that you can actually afford them.
I remember precisely what I've told my brother that I hoped intel can come up with something worth while because I WOULD RATHER BUY FROM intel. If intel sells the i9 7960x which is a 16c for $100 to $300 more than AMD 16c here in Australia I would still buy intel. But no way I'm going to pay almost twice the price for the equivalent. Actually, not really because I run NVMe as well as SLI so I want those 64 lanes. But it would be a really hard for me to decide if it's only $100 - $300 difference.
lock 22 Intel is only a stupid company which believed that could control the CPU market. FUCK intel, with his nonsense prices... If AMD wouldn't done ryzen, now an i7 7700k would cost 500$, and for gaming we wouldn't have other choiches. Thank god that AMD hasn't gave up after fx...
*Looks like Intel is no longer paying money to Linus*
aBoxOfPopTarts it's a joke within the community that Linus got paid to shill
they did sponsor his whole server setup which was like 50k
After his rant video about x299 I wouldnt expect them to.
Well just a little bit at least ( gaming price/value at the end?! and the power compustion is a bit false, 1950X needs less power then i9-7900X )source: www.techspot.com/review/1465-amd-ryzen-threadripper-1950x-1920x/page7.html

Wait Linus you are not rendering videos, 3d models and pictures while gaming? That is a waste of cpu time.
@Kuuh NOOOOOOOOOO
What CPU coolers work with the threadripper? Because some of them don't state TR4 socket support on them, but pcpartpicker lists them as TR4 compatible.
LuneTech I hope you have your answer already, but if not (and if someone else sees this who has the same question); Threadripper comes with a mounting bracket for your water cooler

True, true. Any one that is still using Intel in 2017 needs to drink a gallon of bleach and die.
:( I am using a xeon, it has 8 cores and 16 threads and was 45 euros. Gta v with r9 290x has a cpu usage of 23% at absolute maximum, gpu is 100%

I was actually very pleased to see that cable mod ad, I am definitely going to pick some of those up.
So this thermaltake cooler does not cover the full cpu. will a full size ripper cpu contact plate matter for temps? only ek and ennermax have annouced a full size ripper contact plate on liq coolers.
I take it the start of the video was a dig at Intels recent marketing tactics.

I really appreciate the diminishing returns graph at 6:30, after pausing and reading through it a bit it really makes a lot of sense
I'm having a hard time trying to understand the graph. What is the "Total system cost"?
Is it that if one is to build a PC with a total cost of more than $2750 (CPU and other parts costs included), then i9 is a better value?
Is it like "a product is cheaper but also a bit worse. If you're on a budget build, saving a few bucks is a better value. But if you're building a high-end one with 3 graphic cards, paying insignificantly to get a little extra performance is worth it"?
Great news, Intel needed some competition, good job AMD. Let them fight we all benefit from it.
Wait for an AMD with 4 dies instead of two dies and two dummies. That should leave Intel in the dust. 32 cores and 64 threads. :D
And temperatures???
Pretty sure they used dummy because of thermals.
That's what EPYC is ...
Ur stuped
AMD EPYC has you covered :)
Will the 32 *threads* of the 1950X *rip* apart the core i9's sales? Time to grab the popcorn.
Droplight Tech both wont sell as they are overpriced
American patriot R Haven't you learned anything from Apple?
American patriot R Threadripper isn't overpriced.
Breaking Rayan it costs more than alot of peoples pcs, its not enthusiasts grade its professional grade like the i9 most people wont buy them
Actually that's EPYC, Threadripper is for Pros and not Gamers.

Finally some competition for Intel
exactly. AMD is giving Intel a run for its money after years of being behind and massive waste of money. And people are already flipping sides and being really cringy, when I can guarentee these same people will do the same for Intel as soon as they fire back.
It's probably going to be back and forth over the next few years like it was when ATi and nVidia used to go back and forth with each other. It's a good day to be a consumer! I just hope these new AMD chips aren't just a fluke. I don't think so after seeing their roadmap, but you never know. If either side starts resting on their laurels then we'll be back to the days of consumer hardware moving at a glacial pace.
Why would changing brand when they have the best product be bad? The only cringey thing is fanboys thinking "loyalty" gains them anything. Just buy the best thing at the time of ur purchase.
Daju Yep, finally someone who gets it
and for Nvidia also

Dear Linus,
Do you think there is any chance to see a board with 2 TR4 sockets? There will be special boards with 2 sockets for AMD Epic, but this is another socket, right? It would be a blast to be able to use 2 of the 1950X. And does it boost ALL cores when being under load or just a few ones. Thank you :-)
Is there a review on the ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme?? I'm looking into getting it, but there's some mixed reviews on it.
For the people wondering: Yes. The thumbnail is clickbait. There are no Linus nips in this one, folks.
The CPU is called threadripper, he's "ripping threads" in the thumbnail. There's nothing clickbait about it, it's just a pretty obvious joke. There you go. Now you can cool down and watch the video.
thanks, didnt know that
i dont eve understand the concept of gp, cache , dimm slots ??? which is the best config for vedio editing and graphic design
my 1950x fluctuates between 30*C and 68*C while doing nothing at the desktop, is this normal? It just takes 1 second and it goes from 43 to 63 for instance. I have a noctua 9mm cooler. please help!!

Um know, we haven't benchmarked the in i9 18 Core CPU.
Charlie Smythe not really a competitor with the threadripper as it costs 1000 dollars more (or more)
MinBCraft
Not to mention its much lower single-thread performance. It will do okay with boost, but it would fall apart in multitasking where the cores cannot boost much. It will probably do well for pure multithreading, though. But, at that point, an Epyc or Xeon would make more sense because you'd be looking at the specs more suited to server loads, except without ECC RAM. Honestly, it is like the lower end X299 chips. It doesn't make sense. AMD has a good and clear segmentation of consumer, workstation, and server. But, Epyc really could benefit from DDR4 3000 RAM. The Epyclc stock RAM speeds are not enough to mitigate CCX latency issues.
Finally! A Great AMD CPU. I'm not an AMD fan but I'm glad that Intel is getting competition. It will force them to make better products.
And lower price
Im actually wanting to build a new desktop. Should i wait for Intels answer to the TR? Im torn between 7700k and putting a lil more for a 1800X. Would love to stream and game. I know the 7700k performs better gaming wise but isit significant? Also future proof?

Well alright, then, Linus, Thanks for the recap. Tell us something we don't know!
I love the shade at the beginning.
will it work with 1 eps connecter?? and if yes will it still work on full load??
CS:GO is infamously un-optimized, I really wouldn't even benchmark it.

considering i get 300 fps on an 8350 id say yes
I hate when people mention games like cs go, league of legend or fortnite on benchmarks. Like wtf i can run those on my phone.
But does it have bug eyes?
PCI Express lanes are incorrect in the table around 1:22. The correct comparison is either Intel 44 and TR 60, or Intel 48 and TR 64 (not Intel 44 TR 64).
Did you guys test Threadripper in game mode??? It was not mention.
Nice thumbnail. Will be having fun tonight.

You did not add the link for Cable mod in the description...
Have you thought about making a small form factor build with threadripper? Like how small can you get without throttling. Would be cool to see with and without a video card. Seen a tonn of builds out i the web with huge ass cases, but my interest was in finding how small you can make a developer machine with it, to be able to move from desk to desk in an office with not fixed seats. Love the show, thanks!
but will it rip threads?
I find all of this "fanboy" stuff amusing. One team of fanboys against the other. I remember the first serious PC that I built. It was AMD all the way. I SWORE by AMD. As time went on, Intel ultimately pulled way ahead. I went towards Intel quite some time ago and haven't looked back. You could have said that I was a team red fan boy years ago, but now I guess you could call me an Intel fanboy. Honestly though... I'm just the average consumer that purchases from the companies that make the most sense. AMD, then Intel. Now back to AMD for SURE! When Intel becomes the obvious choice again (and it will for a while), I'll go back without a worry. All of this competition back in the marker is fantastic! Fuck both teams, I go where I get the most out of. (I guess that makes me a computer whore? That's okay.)
The reason why people hate Intel is because Intel is only about the bottom line. They don't focus on innovation. They wait till AMD catches up to their IPC before they release a product that will slightly edge out that and focus on the mass market. That's a very predatory attitude. AMD brought us everything from 64 Bit to on-chip memory controllers to on-die graphics and Intel was just a fast follower even though they have billions of dollars in R&D money! That says a lot. What has Intel really done with all that R&D money? just increase IPC. No HBM, no ground-breaking innovations! AMD came up with so much innovation even though they nearly went bankrupt! The world is better off because of it.
fucking hell, even with a reasonable comment here, there's still people in the replies who dwell on "intel is bad i don't like it here's some people's opinions ok bye". would anyone wake up and try to take a reasonable outlook on both companies? jfc, people writing whole paragraphs to say "intel is bad" when they don't take into consideration both perspectives. honestly cringeworthy.
Where exactly have you come to the idea that Intel's compiler is "most used"? Microsoft's MSVC compiler is dominant for gaming-related software like engines, and for nearly everything else GCC (and increasingly Clang) have been ubiquitous for years. Intel's compiler, by comparison, is nowhere near as common as the open source ones.
All the benchmarking software are built on intel compilers. RTFF - There was an actual suit filed by AMD for this! go google it!
Mason McDonald mee too
6:41 that Tim Allen Home Improvement sound clip really brought back some memories.
hey Linus 2 things this is now 2 years old and I would like to see a comparison between the i9 9900k and the threadripper cpu's, as well as seeing if the newer X399 against the Z390 boards I would love to know how this would play out in AAA games as well as productivity loads, I haven't found anyone that has done this and as the middle price between the threadripper 1950X and the 1920X I think it would make a great review of CPU's although depending on the graphics difference could you put a nvidia 2070 on the intel and a vega 64 on the AMD and use trident z quad 3600mhz 4 X 8 just to make it interesting.

I use all three programs at the same time, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, with an over 30 tabs on chrome. From the benchmarks i've seen, each software individual benchmark goes to the 7700k, but if I'm using all three at the same time, with big files plus the browser tabs, how does that benchmark? I am between the 7700k, 7820x, 7900x and AMD 1950x...
Laughing at all the comments making fun of Intel fanboys. AMD is on top now, but i'd love to know what CPUs have been in their computers for the past 10 years.
Phenom 2 then fx9590...
I love that AMD is back, but ive been sitting here with my 2500k since 2012 and I guess I kinda need to upgrade soon, so its either a 1800x or 1900x or 1920x, cant decide if I want to spend alittle money or sell my kidney first.
If you're mainly gaming with some application work go with a R5 1600 oc to 3.9 and use 3200 memoryJust hope you have a decent GPU because those will cost you a kidney.
Yes, of course, but I want a system like this once in a life time and I know, GPUs are also way overpriced, if you ask me, if you ask for example nvidia, they would probably say they are underpriced haha, but oh well, you dont have any choice with the prices sadly, just bend over and pull your pants down, all you can do.
If he just games it wouldn't be worth it. It's like me buying a supra (get it affordable fast car) instead of a camry or prius when all I am going to do is be an Uber driver.

Who the fuck would game on this thing?
Content creators who get bored and game while they render 4k video. LOL
I would if I had the money to burn, just cause there's a certain satisfaction in having a very powerful pc even if you don't need anywhere near the performance.
I would. Looks like it games fine.
Its just a better binned ryzen 7 CPU, or two of them and well, I think 64 pci lanes are more attractive then the rest of the CPU really, its not hard to cap a shitty z270 board or a low tier 2011 socket.
And people have bought intels 2011 socket for many years, so yeah, why game on that?
Why play games on the 7900x?
Which people are doing even though they maybe dont need everything it has to offer.
Im more interested in the 1900x, because ,well its expensive as fuck and the 1920x and 1950x is just stupidly expensive for me even though te 1900x "only" have 8 cores, but the 1920x is very tempting though.
If you are just gaming you only need an r5/r7 cpu. The IPC is the same. It is the same arcitecture. You're not going to get a higher frequency with threadripper.
