Should Religion Be Taught in Public Schools? | Dr. Safiyyah Ally

  • Dr. Safiyyah Ally makes the case for religion to be included in the public school curriculum. She explains that while Canadian classrooms are becoming increasingly diverse, religious literacy is low. Whether religion is part of the curriculum or not, people learn about religion, but they often learn about it in uninformed and misleading ways. Ally says students should learn about religion to understand and connect, not for worship and devotion. She offers practical advice for how to include religion. There may be times when this leads to discussion of difficult and contentious issues, but she says, “we don’t shy away from debates about climate change and racism and vaccines because they’re messy. Why should we be afraid of talking about religion?”

We should learn about people around us, not necessarily to agree but just to better understand. We share this world together... I think the message about the different ways religion is practiced and thought over now, in the past and in the future. When we don't think about these issues, someone else will fill that void for us - and not necessarily with the intention of shared understanding. I think Muslims as well as Non-muslims are woefully uninformed. Just because we are hopefully on the right path, doesn't mean we should be blind to the other paths people are on (how can we even introduce them to our path if we don't even know where they are?)

Religion is included as part of history already in most high school curriculums. I think that is sufficient at high school level. First of all religious texts if not taught properly can easily be construed as bigotry of people of other faiths. For minds that are still maturing, anything like that can be too much to handle. We’re already aware how easily HS students can fall into gangs and bullying. This religion study can just exaggerate things seriously.
In colleges, there are multiple courses dedicated to religious studies. That’s where they belong. Mature minds can handle that information and tolerate the seemingly bigoted statements.

Your wrong, if religious study is taught from elementary primary education then by the time kids grow up into adolescence, they will deal with it already in mature way. When they get to college, they will be even more mature

@@mahirrahman7 Everybody has their view. Mine is different than yours. Religion is not a bunch of facts but philosophy. So creating the curriculum at primary school level for such a mature subject would be a huge challenge. Reaching consensus on what should be included on behalf of each religion is extremely difficult. At best all religions as viewed from the Judeo-Christian view point will be included. I think that's more harm than good. But again, my opinion is one of the thousand opinions out there.

Indonesian muslim here. My country is not religious country though refused to be called secular 😁. Here religions taught in public schools, law dictates that school must provide teacher for every religion embraced by the students (now we have Islam, Catholic, Protestant, Hindu, Buddha, and Confusianism as common religion). It is common to see religion class attended by only one or two students as they are the minority in the school. As a muslim I know and read some Bible, Veda, Tripitaka and Dao De Jing, and likely the other way around. I don't say that I know much about other religions, but I can confidently say I know what is not them.
Then we have subject of citizenship, that teach us doctrine on how Indonesian religious people should behave as part of multi religions community.
We cannot afford not to have religions taught in public schools as we are combating intolerant teaching that came to this country in 90's.

I'm American and I'm part English, Russian, German, Italian, Spanish, French, Persian, more. Most Americans and Canadians (white European) are just like me and we are as well religiously diverse.
These new peoples are ethnically/culture homogeneous and religiously homogeneous.

No I don’t think so. Becoming a Muslim was the best path I ever become in front of. But the reason why I say no it’s up to the parents to teach their children because we have bias people in school. And one a person can’t teach someone something they don’t know anything about. It’s not about changing a child’s mind it’s more about some people are miss informed about different religions and someone can say the wrong thing now you have a child that is confused because they are being thought someone else’s views. And another reason is everyone do not think the same in their religion. Two people from the same religion can have two different views. I can go on but I don’t think it should be taught in school. It’s up to the parents to teach and understand the different religions they may face in this world and how to respond to it when it’s presented in front of them.

Again, if you are a religious person (like a Muslim, for example), how would you feel being forced to attend an Atheism or Agnosticism class in school? If you are a Muslim parent, would you let your child attend such class? I am sure you will protest.
So the best way to practice equality, is to simply remove such Religion subject from the curriculum. You can have a special Voluntary class about Religion. It should not be mandatory.

So they created the First Amendment to guarantee the separation of church and state. I'm from the United States and I can say one thing. You know I think we should have people of different faith take a specific time in the class. I'm not saying you should preach your religion but I have to agree with her but we can teach it. In the sense that everybody will know about each individual religion and even if they don't have a religion at least everyone is aware about there's the religious belief, without bringing guilt or condemnation on no one. I was raised in Christianity but I also knew that if I wanted to learn about Islam. I had to asked someone. So I went to the resource and I enter into a mosque. And yes I got very kindly Arabic some of them didn't speak too much English. I didn't realize I walked into a mosque with most of them were either from Yemen, Pakistan, Egypt, Palestine thought there was one person there that knew a lot of English. So he took time to interpret what they were telling me in Arabic. And that time they were about to do Ramadan. And I asked him can I be part of it can I participate. Some of them looked at me and they say you know it's going to be hard for you
But the other Arab, he was so nice that he said no don't stop him. Let him see what we all about so I didn't know the prayers so they gave me a chair they put it in the back of the place they told me to sit down and I can observe. I remember because I kept going everyday it caught my attention the way that were praying together how some even were crying With Tears In Their Eyes giving themself to God. One day I was in my tears coming out of my eyes. Now you might ask I didn't understand the prayer they did in Arabic how can I not understand and yet tears were in my eyes I didn't understand what was happening to me.
But I know one of those days I just got next to one of them and even though I didn't know to pray like them. what I said in my English language. Please oh God receive me I know I am not one of them but please receive my heart and with tears in my eyes I said I Surrender my whole life to you.
When this day of Ramadan was over that was almost like the third week of Ramadan one of the brothers wanted to know. What did I say so I told him and tears began to flow out of his eyes so I said listen did I say something I didn't mean to make you cry.
And you should see what he told me that he said all these people are here and we all speak Arabic we come from culture not just a religion but for our country. And you don't realize that God has sent you here while he said Allah has seen you here. Because no one invited you came on your own and he was like I didn't know nobody nobody told me about it. . But you cane on your own. I didn't know nobody there it's just that one day I was standing across the street and I look at the mosque for 15 minutes and I decided to walk in
I know I wrote a lot here but you know something I begin to learn the culture the religion yes I heard some crazy stuff too but one of the brother told me don't listen to that we're not all like this so they were trying to help me. But can I tell you it was one of the greatest experience of my life that I will not forget and then let me to understand more about Islam. That does not mean that I criticize a religion that I came from. Do I truly believe that people in Christianity that love God yes I do believe it. Just like there Muslims that love God with all their heart. Thank you for letting me share with you

Good morning This is a great place to start as all children have education from an early age. Each child is different. We are all born into different families and many religious background. We need to learn to respect
other groups of people. At a young age to learn the basic idea of religion and how many there are in this our world.
I cry for humanity and humanity of this life now is so confusing. And our children, what is the future ?????
Do we live in a civilized world ? Our world is being destroyed , the people, the animals, the trees.
Here in Canada I feel a great shame, the world is being destroyed by MAN. One group against another.
The native children from the past, the women and the men who were here before anybody else. We are just
visitors and we must learn to respect our fellow human being no matter where they come from, what language they speak and the clothes that they wear. We must share this world as this planet is being destroyed by Man. I remember watching your programs years ago and was introduced to Islam some years later. I know some history of the people from EIRE where in England many Irish people came, my mother was one of these people to make a new life. I met some friends of her and they told me that they would never set foot in a R.C. church because of the atrocities that the church did . In the 1950's.
We must have peace. Is our world civilized ????? M. Taha/McNeill

Would the public school educational system have to acquiesce to every religion wanting to celebrate their own religious holiday or read in-class from their own holy book(s)? I think your suggestion is a recipe for disaster rather than an opportunity for mutual religious understanding. Sadly, many high school students can barely read or write competently. More or less what repeating what Safiyyah (sounds like my daughter's name, Sofia) said, religious studies or literacy is not the same as proselytism.
It would be facts about several religions and help to exist more tolerance. That is coherent with a secular society.
People of different religions and without a religious affiliation might have disagreements and discuss (inappropriate places and times) between themselves for fun, learn from others, try to change minds, etc. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't respect others and learn about other cultures.
Unfortunately in some places, Muslims are viewed as intolerant of people who don't care about other people. Though it might be true in some cases, those kinds of people exist in several (ex: Christians and atheists - Muslims are persecuted by Christians in Central Africa), and this channel and the beautiful Ally family show those generalizations are false.

Nope, nope, nope and nope!! All ideologies need to be kept out of Government. Do or say what you want in your own private home or community. Pushing any agenda by the Government is a bad idea, that includes, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Communist, abortion OR LGBTQ!
