    The sequel was the result of people constantly complaining that it was too easy. So NaughtyDog reacted by creating Jak ll, one of the hardest platform games of 2003. Moral of the story: be careful what you wish for.

      @zacharyroach2067 Před 9 lety +3

      V3X21 No it didn't. The Formula was the same. They just changed the order. Like Y=X+Z. In Jak 2 they changed in to Z=Y-X. Same Formula. Different order of variables. Both Games still had the same core gameplay. Just instead of Collecting Orbs to play more missions like in the first one you played missions to get access to more areas to collect more orbs in the others ones. (Though the collecting part was opitonal in 2 and 3). And Yes of course they added new stuff in each sequel. Thats how games work. Games dont stay the same for each installment. If thats what they did they mind as well not even make a new game.

      +V3X21 Well actually I think what they did was an example of an evolution franchise. Think about it why would it change so much you may ask simple as the audience grows so do their tastes in Gaming and I guess they thought that if the audience grows up so do they with their games so there you go for my theory. And think about it Naughty Dog was once probably a kid but once they got to Jak & Daxter 2 they became like a Teen and the games suddenly got more & more mature as they get older Uncharted I would say they were a Young Adult because I think of it like an Evolution Theory for Naughty Dog once they got to the TLOU they became an older adult and started to focus more on Story than Gameplay. So there you go I thought of a theory that could actually make sense why the company has changed so much with their games.

  • @MadderCommotion
    @MadderCommotion Před 9 lety +64

    Obviously, GTA III had a huge impact on the Jak and Daxter franchise. The thing, is that Naughty Dog does games based on popular things for its time (when 3D platformers were popular, they made Crash Bandicoot; when zombies became popular, they make The Last of Us). Jak & Daxter 1 was developed in a time where Banjo 2 was the shit, and Jak 2 was developed when GTA III was the shit.
    Something similar happened to the Sonic series. When GTA was the shit, they gave Shadow some guns and a darker atmosphere and made Shadow The Hedgehog.

    Dude, the reason is fuckin obvious, the game explain's that, first, jack is older, he has spent 2 years in jail, 2nd He has been subject to "dark force experiences" or some shit, and that actually explains his sudden (not so sudden since he has been in jail as I said before) change of personality.

    What i loved about jack 1 so much is that you weren't required to get all the power cells.. you could just get enough to get by which made wanting to collect all 100 that much more enjoyable and worth it, and by wanting to get all 100 you explored the world, talked to NPC's that you didn't have to if you just wanted to get to the end, and other cool stuff.. but in jack 2 you were basically forced to do every single mission.. you couldn't skip one, there weren't NPC's you could just go up and talk to, and it turned into a linear game where you never explored the world.. how many people just drove around the city just to look at stuff.. I can tell you that I didn't, and i'm pretty sure most people didn't as well.. besides the little challenges there was nothing to see, no hidden places to platform up to, no thrill of "could there be a power cell here from jack 1 or am i just wasting time", no environmental changes, etc.... To me it turned somewhat boring as i played on.. (Now don't get me wrong I love the game, and the whole jack series, but the feeling of jack 1 is something which made me love the game"

    I think the change was completely necessary to continue the series, it's mainly the fact that there was an actual plot to be expanded on, and if Jak continued to be mute, it'd be really difficult to make the plot interesting with Daxter's sassiness carrying everything, the story needed a hero with somewhat of a character, or else it would've been more childish platforming and that would've been boring.
    Personally i'd love a next gen Jak by Naughty Dog, they showed a lot of potential for an interesting story and a well rounded game in Jak 3. Please no more zombie games and Uncharted..

    In several documentaries that Naughty Dog has done from just going over Jak and Daxter or the history of the company in general, the people behind the series have said why they chose to go the route they did. If memory serves me correctly, the reason they decided to go with the gta look is because gta was very prevalent at that time and was very popular so they wanted to try to implement those features into the game while of course paint a story with fluent cutscenes, amazing dialogue, and a pretty interesting lore. As we all know, it worked amazingly well. So pretty much all you said was true except the Sony bit. Sony didn't push Naughty Dog for this idea, it was all their own stuff. Sony knows better than to push an idea onto the company that put PlayStation on the market. Bungie knows this especially well which is why they bailed away from Microsoft and decided not be be chained down.

  • @tallgamerboy
    @tallgamerboy Před 8 lety +4

    The real difference was before jak II naughty dog only had 6 members, and the majority of problems they encountered they had the team head solve with particles, when they expanded and asked to join with sony, they had over 40 people on the team, which allowed for a lot more ideas to come forward, allowing for more stuff to happen in the game.

    Jak And Daxter The Precurser Legacy was my favourite not only because it was the original, but it was unique, the style was fun, challenging, kept you playing for hours just trying to get 100% completion (though I've never gotten so far as to complete it). One of my favourite aspects of the game is how atmospheric it is, in Sandover Village I felt happy as it was a colourful area, but then arriving in Rock Village took a dark alternative as it was burned, damaged, the weather was dull, it made you feel slightly more serious about the game, but all the way through I have to say the music is very uplifting, I also love the unique characters, even the ones that you only come across once or twice like the soldier in Rock Village or the fisherman in the Forbidden Jungle, it had a lot of cool minigames too speaking of the fisherman, fishing, shooting creatures and fending off ambushes in the Boggy Swamp etc

    It was a very noticeable evolution to a darker setting. The difference between Super Mario 64 and GTA (unless Mario time warped to the future, grew out his hair, started shooting guns and hijacking hover cars).
    It worked out fairly well though. For 10 year-olds who loved the first game, they were hitting their teen years at the release of the second and the change mirrored the transitions that they felt in their personal lives away from kid-friendly to more mature themes.

Like "OH LOOK! jack was all kidnapped and experimented on and now he's turning into a monster and OMG! He said he's going to kill someone! OH and you can kill people now!" so in the end it all just felt so forced.

      Link, The Hero of Winds Ok... Just... no... the genre didnt change. The equipment did. It was still the same core game. There was still puzzles. Platforming. and Action. They just Updated the equipment they preformed these with. Which they should because it is a NEW and DIFFERENT game. Things must evolve. And to call Jak 2 or 3 a shooter is just... for lack of a better word. Stupid. They are not shooters. They have guns yes. But it is not a shooter. CoD is a Shooter. Halo is a Shooter. Battlefield is a shooter. Jak 2 and 3 is an action game with guns. And honestly If you hated the changes so much just play Jak 1 over and over again. Because they already perfected it right?

    My idea for Jak 4 must go like this.
    In my opinion the only way for Jak's story to make sense.
    Daxter and Tess taking a warm relaxed spa just outside the city.
    Jak getting pressured to become the leader of haven city.
    He drop Torn's suggestion to become the leader. And continues doing what he's good in
    Kicking ass in the arena and winning the races.
    Will all the people gets fond of him and admires Jak it becomes too much for him
    Eventually Jak needs to go incognito and tries to hide from the people and goes to dead town to Samo's old house. After sitting hours in the broken house of Samo's he recalls old memories when he was young playing in the house of samo's and meeting Daxter for the first time.
    A few seconds earlier the portal in Samo's house opens and will Jak is lurking in the portal. He see's the future were everything is in chaos and no one following the rules. The fight for leadership in Haven City turns out into a revolution.
    And will the rich and powerfull focus in becoming the world leader. The poor suffers and get beaten by thieves and thugs As he see's a innocent women getting attacked by a bunch of thugs.
    Jak jumps in the portal and will he looks around he find himself in the past.
    Will Jak knows he must not alter the past too much he must find a way to get back to the present. Will avoiding himself and Samos. He tend to go to the other sages to train him and giving him the knowledge how to go back to his own time.
    He tend not to use his name Jak and use his birth name ''Mar''.
    I can continu with this story but feedback? how do you think the story of Jak must go?
    He's Mar who created everything in the precursor's places but when and how did he ever made all this?

    I can't say for the "Grand Theft Auto"-esk aspects of the game. But for Jak's personality and the storyark as it was they did so because they wanted to align the series with an older audience(Early to late teens) And games those players liked involved guns and swearing. They did an AMAZING job with Jak's character and its probably for the best they made this move as it gave Jak more of a character instead of just being "Silent protagonist with weird powers"

    Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy was my favourite of the series. I just wish they made Jak II similar to the first game before changing the genre completely. I recently watched a video on what Nuaghty Dog had planned for JaD but they ran out of time and had to get the game shipped and boy do I wish they finished. There was another hub for yellow sage with 3 more levels to explore, plus Volcanic Crater had another level planned, plus Gol and Maia's citadel was intended to be a hub with 3 more levels before going on to the final battle against them.

      One of the saddest things ever! Precursor Legacy still my favourite game ever probably but this would have put it so over the top. It’s a real shame too because the first HUB (Sandover Village into beach, jungle and misty island) is an absolute masterpiece with the side quests from the villagers and the level of detail with the power cells in the actual levels. You can tell as the game goes on it gets progressively less detailed (rock village is still great and the levels with this, but there are less side quests and more of them just involve buying the power cells). Once you get to volcanic crater you have only two levels instead of three and no more side missions from other characters. Again it’s a massive shame given they showed their potential in the first HUB at what they could have done with time…

    Changing market tastes is why. GTA 3 came out and was a massive success, so there was a bigger, industry wide push for more open ended action games that skewed in a more mature direction. Naughty Dog sort of met those ideas halfway with Jak 2 and 3. I realize this video is over a year old, but Jason Rubin talks about it on the Devs Play for Jak over on Double Fine's channel.

    I loved Jak 2. It all began as a funny, simple and colorful Jump'n run, but then, wush, it went into an amazing Granth Theft Auto styled Action Game with a great dark and dirty Cyberpunkt-Setting. The character's became more complex and mature. I was between a Child and a Teen when I played Jak 2 the first Time and I LOVED it! I loved the bigger focus on a good and interesting story, I loved the Setting, I loved the Gameplay, even if the game itself was very hard and i loved the new grim and speaking Jak with an actual personality. I mean, we were made into thinking that Jak and Daxter is a childs Franchise, but then in the first minutes of the game we see how our beloved silent Hero is punched with a riffle, tortured fpr two years, turned into a monster with "I'm going to kill Praxis!" as his first words. THAT WAS AWESOME! But was I loved most was, that naughty dog understood that even younger Players can appreciate a deep and dark story and love playing as an anti-hero.

      +Lorens Rowe Not really. They added a bunch of things that didn't need to be in the game. Dark precursors for one, Erol coming back seemed like another pointless addition, and the part I hated the most being the precursors being ottsels.
      I don't think they originally intended on the precursors being ottsels, all the stuff they built and sizes that they built them in seem to indicate at least a human-sized race. Precursors being ottsels is just a cop-out. They probably did it just to have a memorable plot-tist to an otherise boring plot. If Jak 4 is to ever come out they should retconn that completely.

    When Jak and Dexter Precursor Legacy came out, I played it nonstop on weekends (I was a little boy and Mom didn't allow me to play on weekdays). Despite this, I beat the game in about a month. When Jak II came out, my parents wouldn't let me get it because they saw guns on the cover, and they felt that it would be too violent. I ended up getting a spongebob game for my birthday instead. Fastforward to now. I am in my mid twenties and bought the game used from a locally owned dying used video game store. I can't believe what I was missing! I am about 70% complete with Jak II and I must say: it is WAY HARDER than Precursor! Hardly any checkpoints, no autoaim, and basically 3-4 shot death make it an uber challenge! It is also a nice expansion of the storyline I experienced while in my childhood. I am very glad to have picked up the series again, even if I am a little late to the party! I am planning on ordering Jak III once I beat Jak II. Cheers!

      Sometimes it is good when they stop making new games. It means the old ones were sufficient. Plus, making a new game would probably have bigger shoes to fill in order to add to the already expansive storyline; if the game flops, it could even hurt the enjoyment of the older games. Just look at starwars as a brand to get an idea. After the new movies, a lot of people got turned off from star wars.

    Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy was revealed at E3 in June 2001. The game had a budget of $14 million and a development cycle that lasted nearly three years. In that time, they managed to create a fully interactive world and conceived a narrative that would allow for more meaningful character development. The two central characters also went through a rigid design process that took inspiration from both Manga and Disney animation. They had initially planned on introducing a third character who would evolve as the game progressed in a Tamogotchi-style fashion. However, this idea was scrapped as it led to several unnecessary complications. The game's soundtrack was recorded at Mutato Muzika Studios, and was produced by Mark Mothersbaugh with Josh Mancell composing the score.
