If you are unable to laugh at yourself, or your own culture, there is something seriously wrong with you and your culture. If it is SO fragile as to be beyond criticism or ridicule, I think you should give it some though as to why it seems that is. Could it be that you are so worried about scrutinising what or why you believe what you do, and may find something you don't like, or that some beliefs are not warranted after all.

My husband and are Christian Missionaries and we were travelling through the middle east. My husband's heart stopped on the plane. Resuscitation. Then, 20 minutes later... Cardiac arrest again... resuscitation. A doctor on the plane says, you better get this guy to a hospital or he's going to die. Qatar Airlines lands us in Oman in 20 minutes. I think my heart may have stopped when they took our passports. I was completely terrified. However, we were treated with incredible kindness and hospitality. Qatar Airlines would not allow us to pay for anything or use our travel insurance. Everyone we met was so gracious and kind. I wish Americans could see this and understand that the middle east is not all about terrorism. Some of the warmest most welcoming people helped us, through one of the most difficult events of our lives. Total strangers treated us like family. We were in Oman for 3 days and Qatar airlines assured our safety and comfort every step of the way. The hospital staff were kind and compassionate. The hotel staff were incredible. Yes. People in the middle east laugh and offer you food and beverages and absolute welcoming and hospitality. Some day, we would like to visit again under different circumstances.

The thing is, words which some consider vulgar and profane, others use regularly in daily life, so they no longer have any impact to those folks. So it's actually the material, not the words, which is funny. We have to get over both the idea that some words are bad and others good, as well as getting over nudity or even underwear. It's become ridiculous. A girl will wear a string bikini on the boardwalk, casually walking down the ocean side, yet, become freaked out if her skirt rips at work and you can see her slip.

(for materlistic selfish reason). Take for example Sunnis and shias in Iraq. Before saddam u couldn't even tell the difference between the two cuz they just got along finely. Comes saddam, starts favouring the Sunnis which as human nature's goes cussed the shias to dislike the Sunnis. Then when saddam left. It was like let's get revenge for the shias. And then the secterian events occurred in 2006 where u were getting killed for being the opposite sect of the same religion, bearing in mind that 40 years ago they would pray in the same mosque. Now people are getting more educated and more civilised and after ISIS came in both Sunnis and shias fought against them and defended their country. And then they realised how similar they r again and now u rarely see in secterian tension anymore in Iraq 😊
