10 Ways to Peel an Orange - You Suck at Cooking (episode 143)

  • Peeling an orange isn't easy. Unless you're strong and good at peeling oranges. Then it's easy. Otherwise it's difficult. Unless you know other techniques. Then it's easy. Unless you're bad at those techniques. Then it's hard. Unless you have a good friend who is good at peeling oranges. Then it's easy. Unless that friend never existed and you just made them up to cope with reality. Then it's hard. You just never know.

1:25 Another Fun Fact: YSAC already answered the question "What came first - the orange or the colour", and it is indeed the fruit. Before the orange arrived to England by trade, the color was called 'geolured' which basically translates to 'yellow-red'. You can also see how the word changed. From Sanskrit 'naranga', to Spanish 'naranja' or French 'narange'. The n attached to the indefinite article and from' a narange' it turned to 'an orange'. Some daily linguistic etymology for y'all! :)

A friend of mine told me about a method her mom taught her, that the best way to peel an orange is to call it a banana, shame it for trying to do orange-y things, constantly tell it it's not a good enough banana and it needs to try harder, and punish it for not being yellow and banana-shaped. Takes a long time but if it works, the peel becomes as easy to peel as a banana peel. The only down-side apart from the time and effort involved is it makes the oranges taste bitter. Also, if this method fails, the orange will either run away from home or kill itself.

There's another method i learned from my desi grandmother, which i guess not many people know about? You hold the orange upside down and dig both thumbs into the divot in the center. It should pull apart into 2 or 3 sections which can be separated into 4, and then you can just pick out each segment to eat. Plus you can collect the pith and seeds you pick off in the emptied section and neatly throw away the whole thing when you're done. The opened orange looks like a flower and it's the only way i peel my oranges cause it makes them a more portable snack.

Plum, olive, cranberry, raspberry, cherry?, wine maybe? If you're ok with lime, then banana, candy apple. The problem with these is they're almost always used as modifiers/specifiers for other colors, lime-green, candy apple red, etc. Except plum; it's pretty smack dab between red and purple, and I've never heard it used as a modifier.
