Secret Invasion was…not great. All throughout the show, I was rooting for it. I thought it started off strong and then went downhill so fast-even getting a 13% rotten tomatoes rating-by far the worst for Marvel. So I’m going to explain exactly what went wrong with this show-the behind-the-scenes problems that plagued it, the state of marvel going forward-and why this show was the greatest disappointment ever in the MCU.
Doug: Biggest disappointment ever? Geez that seems like an exaggeration.
Well Doug, let me take you back to 2003, to the movie X2: X-Men united. Superhero movies were mostly missed until this point-the year before we had raimi spider-man, and this movie finally got the X-Men 100% right. Jean Gray had just died sacrificing herself for the X-men, and just before the credits, we got this tease [clip].
That was teasing the dark phoenix saga-one of the greatest all time comics stories ever that comic fans never thought we’d get to see on the big screen. And when X-men 3 came out 3 years later, what we got was a low-budget, half assed interpretation of this epic story. That’s how secret invasion made me feel.
Doug: But it's not fair to compare the show to the comic book.
You’re right-so I’m going to avoid comparing this show to the events of the comic. The comic was this sprawling crossover event filled with superheroes-but the show adapts a small part of the comic, where Nick Fury goes off on hisnown to root out skrulls. So I will compare this show to those comics, where it’s appropriate.,
The secret invasion director Ali Selim, even said to Variety: “Marvel has a very devoted - even rabid - fan base who have expectations and when their expectations aren’t fulfilled, they move in the other direction' they give it a thumbs down...is it our job to fulfill their expectations?"
Look man, if you made a bad show, don't blame fans for saying it's a bad show., But, as I’ll prove throughout this video, the show is not bad because of this director. There was a confluence of events that hampered Secret INvasion, which made it almost impossible to tell a compelling story. But before we can explain what went wrong behind the scenes, we have to talk about what was actually wrong with the show.
And there was a lot wrong with this show-ain't is a failure. Now I don't use that word often-I love MCU stories, and this one has to rank near the bottom of anyone’s l'ist-but the worst MCU show is still better than most TV shows. And the secret invasion was miles ahead of the Inhumans or Helstrom.
But this show might have been doomed to fail, because the premise of the show was flawed from the start. The MCU was not in the right place to tell the story of a secret invasion.
So Back to secret INvasion-I think the context behind the show was flawed from the start. This is one of those times when I have to compare this story to the comics, and to show why maybe this adaptation wasn't right for the MCU/. in the comics, the skrulls have been villains since Fantastic Four number 2. Some skrulls are good guys, but comic readers generally accept that the skrulls are villains.
So, when a Secret INvasion crossover was announced, we understood what it meant-the skrulls were about to hatch the villainous plan they’d been building up toward since 1961. But in the MCU, the movie captain marvel went for this reversal to make the skrulls good guys. [straw drink]. Now for the movie and for Carol's character development, this was a great choice. It showed Carol that she had been fed lies about the war, made her question her identity, and humanized refugees.

Well, it is our fault we don’t like it, technically, but that doesn’t mean anything. Both things are true: the show is legitimately bad, and it is our fault we don’t like it. The director could have even more audacity and blame the studio, because ultimately, it’s the studio that doesn’t respect the fans, not the director. The director did the best they could with what they had. The director is just a pawn as much as the audience is.
Seriously though, fans demanding respect as though they own the franchise need to look in the mirror. Nothing will please every fan. Franchises don’t belong to the audiences. The creators can do what they like. Don’t like, don’t watch, don’t whine.

So stop blaming fans for not liking something, as long as fans aren't attacking people involved it's all justified. People don't get praise for their efforts, they get for their results. M night shyamalan put efforts in Air bender live action as well, or Velma had efforts put into it as well, but it's not fans fault they hate them, it's fucking studios fault that it's bad then it's directors fault for accepting the studios unreasonable demands.

As others have said, Phase 4 should have been Secret Invasion. You start with a Nick Fury Disney+ show that opens with the skrulls collecting the DNA for the Harvest in the rubble of the Battle of Earth. You show how Fury feels like he need to reestablish his control and he is mentally broken down realizing how little he matters after being turned to dust for 5 years. Thats why he so desperate to create the Harvest so they have something to defeat any villian in the universe, and Maria Hill and Talos are trying to reason with him but hes ignoring them.
Talos is also trying to explain to him how alot of the Skrulls are getting frustrated not having a home, and even Maria Hill suggesting Thanos' abandoned retirement home, and Fury says no, I need them here to create the Harvest and keep them to doing his bidding, thinking there is only a few hundred Skrulls anyway so who cares.
As this is happening, Gravik and Gi'ah are gathering Skrulls together to revolt and start to plan. He sends one of his goons to start setting up the Flag Smashers and some other terrorists attacks, maybe even helping Arthur Harrow finance his cult. Rhodey starts to get wise of the situation, so they kidnap him.
Fury still unaware of the scale of the situation, stops Graviks goon from setting off the nuke or releasing his plan for the Harvest to the public or sending it to the Avengers, with Talos' help but thinking that the goon is working alone with a couple other rouge Skrulls; Gi'ah's mom dies in the fight.
At the end of the show, Fury is still struggling to mentally deal with returning from the Blip so he goes to SABER. Before he goes Gravik gives one final plea to him to find them a home but is ignored. Then you see Gravik and Gi'ah giving a speech, as they are opening New Skrullos and recruiting Skrulls to join them to make Earth their new home. It closes with bodies being kidnapped and celebrities, super heroes and politicians looking into the camera, some of their eyes changing to reveal that they are Skrulls and some not, so you dont know if they all are or not.
Then you continue with Phase 4 as originally planned with WandaVision and Loki, etc. But like at the post-credits of certain shows, you have Skrulls reporting to Gravik on the aftermath, like at the end of Falcon, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye, every crime family in those shows has a Skrull high up in the ranks that are planting all these seeds of destruction all over the world, taking DNA samples to try and build up Super Skrulls and you see their doctors working on a machine to do it.
All leading up to the end of Phase 4 with the Secret Invasion movie which runs similar to the show but you can bring in more super heroes and have them be Skrulls since it is a movie. Gravik loses but in the post credit scene you see someone from the TVA pick him up at the last second and take him and then he's introduced to Kang who wants to make him and his people a proposition and Phase 5 begins....

And you dont know any of them are working for Gravik or are Skrulls until the end credits of the last episode when the head of the firm meets Gravik for dinner to discuss how his goons failed him but were ultimately able to retrieve the sample.

I still remember the soul crushing feeling when they announced secret invasion was going to be a D+ show. Just by saying that, I knew it was going to be a cheap-feeling, dumbed down version of what the skrull invasion was. Even with that in mind, I really didn't expect to be as bad as it was though.
Also in the secret invasion comics, IMO, had Maria Hill finally doing cool stuff. They showed her being just as capable and steps ahead like Nick Fury. Throughout her MCU appearances she has been criminally underused, and she never did anything that showcased what a total BA her comic counter-part is. I was thinking "could secret invasion tv series finally be the moment they give her cool stuff to do?!"...Nope just killed off quick.
Even though I knew I would be disappointed by this show, I still didn't realize how bad it was going to be.

true 100%. plus we know sometime down the line we might have to deal with a power crazy, "daenarys mode" Gi'ah or something. they've got a super skrull on the good guys' side and like... they have to address the character again at some point.
the cat's out of the bag now and Gi'ah is in the mcu, with all those powers and nobody to use them with or against, so what now?!
I guess I'm just a little concerned/apprehensive about how it's all going to play out - do they nerf her? avoid the topic and wait til people forget? idfk, but i really hope the events and implications of secret invasion haven't messed up things going forward. it's like that giant frozen celestial sticking out of the ocean. nothing has been mentioned since it happened in eternals and like, why?!!

I was really saddened by the whole Rhodie reveal. He was a great character and to find out that for several movies and projects that he was a Skrull cheapens those great moments like when he and Nebula bonded over the tech for their bodies and also sad that they took a disabled superhero got rid of that. Like, at the end of Civil War, when Tony was helping him learn to walk again, did the Skrull fake being disabled? It's like his character got wiped out.

I’m actually cancelling my subscription to Disney+, and I’m one of the original subscribers from 2019…
The stuff that the MCU and the Star Wars franchise are cranking out is horrid, and with the $60 price increase since my last renewal (going from $79.99 to $139.99 this coming November), why should I pay that much extra for crap that isn’t even entertaining anymore?

I think Bob Chapek was a big reason why the MCU has been the way it is right now. Yeah, he's gone now, but Secret Invasion was made under his regime; Iger greenlit a lot of them, but Chapek oversaw their productions. He also reportedly took creative freedom away from Feige and forced him to work on so many projects; this would explain why so many things came out last year along with the shorter runtimes/episode counts. Secret Invasion is just what's left of the Chapek era.

I think they need to take the model from Star Wars in general. You have three Star Wars movies in a “phase“. So you had Star Wars episode one the Phantom Menace. In between episode one and two you could’ve had three Disney+ shows showing how Anakin training was going how Palpatine was manipulating the Senate And how count Dooku was getting all the independent systems ready for separation and then go into episode two. In between episode two and three, you could’ve had again three Disney+ shows all dealing with major battles of the clone wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi Anakin relationship changing, and Anakin falling deeper to the dark side. And you just keep going on like that. I think Marvel should adopt some of that and maybe not go so big so much, but tone it down and give us better quality writing and storytelling instead of everything all at once different people working on different things, and the one hand isn’t talking to the other hand. Kevin Feige’s job has to be incredibly difficult these days trying to piece together everything that’s going on at once and connecting all the dots. He does have a hard job. He needs to make it a little bit more simpler with his hands being in into everything, making sure continuity is perfect.

Having random skrulls say "he loves you" leading into the reveal of the zealot faction, symbols of Kly'bn all over, etc. It not only would have made for a great rational motivation, but given the show a relevant modern topic to build a theme upon. I had zero expectations going in, loved episode 2, really like several characters, and I really liked the last scene between Fury and his wife. There was something very moving - for me - about whatever her name was reverting to her natural form and the two of them kissing and embracing - especially after the earlier poem scenes. I also really, really like the British woman/spymaster. Great actor, great character.
But sure, lots of head-scratching choices. I hated what happened to Maria Hill, hated that they killed off Talos, and wished the Fury/Gravic conversation in the last episode had actually been with Fury. But then, if they’d had that conversation at the beginning of the series, it would (or should) have undermined the entire plot.

Many have gone in-depth as to WHY the writing is bad. And why it's been bad in ever single other Disney+ Marvel show as well.
This isn't really much worse written than the others, it's probably middle of the pack in that regard, people just noticed this time for some reason. I think the luster is wearing off.

    • @fyngolnoldor4891
      @fyngolnoldor4891 Před 9 měsíci +14

Have you tried, idk, analyzing it yourself and coming to your own conclusions? Do you always need someone else to formulate your ideas for you?
Ryan's analysis is in fact quite bad because he lets the writers off the hook and blames it all on MCU reshoots when he doesn't even know what or how much of the show was reshot exactly.
This review also doesn't point out that the Fury in this show is portrayed as broken and wanting to give up which is THE EXACT OPPOSITE of the Nick Fury we know. Fury gets berated by Olivia Colman's character for losing faith upon finding out there's always a bigger, badder villain out there more powerful than Fury. This would NEVER break Fury because Fury has ALWAYS been the one fighting against the odds and that is EXACTLY why he made the Avengers, a team of superpowered beings to take on the fights Fury himself can't as a human.
Then there's the standard Disney progressive bullshit where they YET AGAIN take male leads and basically replace them with younger, more competent female leads (e.g. Fury replaced by Olivia Colman's character, Talos replaced by G'iah). They do some version of this in pretty much every Disney+ show post-Wandavision.
Other writing problems are that in a world where Skrulls impersonate people at will there almost never is any checking that various characters are actually human and not Skrull. Olivia Colman's character does it once by shooting her MI6 superior to reveal that he's not human (something which could have been done in the hospital scene with Ritsen, Rhodes, Fury and Olivia Colman's character). Outside of that, there are no tests performed, no devices invented to detect Skrulls, etc. Despite knowing about Skrulls, neither Fury, nor the US or UK governments (both of which know about them) inform anyone else, which allows Skrulls to impersonate people freely without worrying that they will be detected.
Then there's the power level of the Skrulls that fluctuates wildy. Based on the Captain Marvel movie Skrulls aren't shown to be stronger than humans, they just are able to look copy human looks. In Secret Invasion they somehow have superhuman strength, such that Talos frequently performs feats of strength (breaking down doors, chains, etc.). Then they do this with the Super Skrulls too: Gravik has the super healing of Extremis and we see how easily he heals from being shot in the face by Fury (just like G'iah does later when shot by Gravik) but then, in the final battle, G'iah shoots a hole through Gravik who now dies, for some reason not being able to heal himself anymore despite having the powers of multiple Avengers and supervillains. Sure...why not...

This review is 100% spot on. I think one of my biggest fears now is that they'll say Rhodey has been a scrull since Civil War even though there's enough evidence to believe it had to be after Endgame. The MCU is so big, I'm afraid they'll break their own cannon just to make a story work. 😕 That would really ruin the magic for me. Fingers crossed they can improve from here and get back to better execution and storytelling.

For the most part, I enjoyed the show. I never expected it to follow the comics when we learned it would be a show and not a movie. At first, I thought Captain Marvel 2 (or The Marvels) was gonna adapt the Secret Invasion storyline since Carol has history with them. But, clearly, Marvel has other plans for these stories. And while I enjoyed the first 5 episodes, the season finale didn’t really stick the landing. Super Skrull fight is cool and all, but it felt like a rush to get to the finish line just so Marvel can move on to other projects. There wasn’t even a post-credits scene; it just ended. That’s it. It’s like Marvel just wanted to get the show over with so they can focus on projects that they actually cared about.

But I'm not always looking for movies like Infinity war. I took the parts I liked and ran with them. I loved Olivia Colman's character who was hilarious and almost every episode. I enjoyed Samuel l Jackson's character and his acting. And I really liked the banter between two black men, even if it was retconned immediately since Rhodes was a Skrull.

The biggest problem with this show is that Marvel burned one of their best trump cards and didn't even take the hand. Now the idea is finished and can' be done in the MCU again. Best way to do SI would be a 45-60 min episode centered on Fury, released after each full length movie (which would each also have hints to SI). This way it could be well planned and integrated with the films while still being a Fury based arc. You could do far better CGI with the extra production time. If there would be 6 films in phase 5 you could do 7 eps of SI interspersed and released on D+. Imagine introducing Fury’s wife in a scene in the next Captain America, followed up a couple weeks later with a flashback ep telling their story. Or have an ep about finding them a home, then place Captain Marvel in deep space looking for a new planet for the Skrulls at the beginning of the Marvels. It could’ve been so much better!

So much weight fell out by dropping Talos. Even if they needed the war to continue to be waged with the skrulls for something they have in mind for the future, how cool would it have been for Talos and Fury to take out Gravik together? Maybe Giah could have gone to deal with Rhodey.. and all 3 celebrated together or 4 with Olivia Coleman. The 4 of them grabbing a drink at a pub would have been hilarious. Then varra comes in and makes up with Fury there. The president could still have been the ass he was and declared war on the skrulls.. Maybe it ends with the 5 of them in that pub watching the president's wretched speech on the news, horrified because of what said speech was about to do. I'm highly confused. I watch the show & was absolutely blown away by how good it was! Then I get online & people are saying the show was bad. Did we watch the same show ? All the characters were compelling, action scenes were great & it barely had any humor, which kept the tone grounded. I truly don't understand any of the complaints on this show.

13:53 that machine kind of reminds me of that one Magneto used on that politician. Turned straight to water

Honestly, comparing Secret Invasion's production timetable to the original release date of The Marvels (July 2022) makes me seriously think that the show was meant to be set after that movie, and then had to be heavily rewritten after the delays.

everyone just sleeps i swear they complained about every thing for what it was ( a plot device) the show was good and watchable maybe would have been better a disney pluse only movie then a series but still it gives much need insight for the next 3 movies' coming out

I enjoyed secret Invasion, but I do believe that that was buoyed by the performances of Jackson, Coleman, Woodard, and Ben Adir. They nailed every emotional beat and kept me invested. If they were not delivering excellent performances, I definitely would have noticed more of everything.

I think you and everybody else is coming down too hard on Ritson for wanting a gun. He knew about the Skrulls, he knew they could shapeshift, he knew Fury was coming for him. Nicholas J Fury is one of the very few people in the MCU that would be able to get to the President of the United States despite having the absolute BEST security in the history of the world. Like Tony Stark said, "He's a spy, he's The Spy." If I was Ritson and I knew someone was coming directly for me that had a 100% chance to get me, just DAYS after an almost successful assassination attempt, I would ask for a gun as well. You can't get any more vulnerable than being on a gurney with an IV in your arm in the middle of a hallway.

Exactly and why would he have family next to him in a foreign country, and the paranoia my family could be a Skrull and try to finish the job!

He was still in medical shock: in a serious car accident, then a firefight, then an alien reveal of his own staff. No one can be rational after that without some serious support.
The indomitable President Strongman archetype is nonsense - they are human beings too.

I wish ryan also talked about not only how good secret invasion in the comics was but also how excellent it was adapted in Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes and how the mcu should have did the storyline from the beginning or the start of phase4 exactly like EMH. I mean look how well the storyline was adapted

Secret invasion in the comics was a drawn out cash cow. It could have been great, but it was just fine. Also fant4stic sucks...

I'd love for you to compare Secret Invasion to DC's Peacemaker. Been watching that and I'm seeing so many similarities as well as ways Secret Invasion could've taken some tips. Great video as always and I'm trying to stay hopeful for the MCU 🤞🏿
