Secret Invasion is halfway through, and the show has some strong high points...but it's also a far, far cry from the epic crossover story from the comics. In this video we discuss some of the problems the show is having, and how these difficulties are indicative of the state of the MCU today.

    #SecretInvasion #Review
First of all, the show is not like the comic book. That was an amazing, huge crossover which touched every title in the Marvel comics line. The MCU will adapt those same crossover stories, but they do it in a single movie. Avengers INfinity War was the infinity gauntlet-Captain America Civil war adapted the civil war comics crossover.
Paring down crossovers into a single movie works better for the medium-but those movies still felt epic in scale. Secret Invasion does not feel epic in scale-and it should.
In the comics, Secret invasion was a major, major turning point in the universe. It's when the sins of the illuminati came back to haunt them. Public faith in the heroes fell apart-Norman Osborn was put in charge of the avengers [Norman clip]. Every single superhero was under suspicion of being a skrull-the heroes had to fight off a skrull invasion armada. It was a world war against skrulls.
The TV show is taking one small story form that crossover-Nick Fury hunting down skrull operatives, and they’ve gotten rid of everything else. This is following the MCU playbook. They paired down the infinity trilogy into a character-driven movie where Thanos is the protagonist. Civil war became a character drama where Steve had to choose between his old ex and his shiny new friend.
Doug: Wow. Civil war has the same plot as sweet home alabama.
    It sure does. [trailer footage]
Back to Secret Invasion-I don't have a problem with this story focusing on Nick Fury. And just to shout out a few positives here-this show is giving us some of the best performances we’ve seen in the MCU. This is sam jackson at his best, his ost nuanced, and olivia colman is chewing through scenery like this is the last role she’s ever going to play [torture scene]. Hell the scene with Rhodey and fury is their first meeting, and it does not disappoint [clip].
But 95% of this show takes place in small rooms, small sets, or maybe on the volume. Whereas it should feel Big-instead, it's on disney plus. And this is what I really want to get into-the Disney plus Marvel shows aren't delivering like they should be. I mena, I’m enjoying them. I’ve'liked every show-I just like stories set in the MCU. I devoured every second of the shield, and flipped out at a moment like this [clip].
But you can't deny that as far as budget quality, scale-we are getting diminishing returns on these shows.
Doug: What do you mean by that?
Well, let me run through the history of the marvel disney plus shows. They were first announced in the spring of 2019, after avengers: endgame. Disney was preparing a rival streaming service to compete with Netflix, and Marvel was going to be the crown jewel in the service. That first announcement at SDCC included Wandavision, Loki, Falcon and the winretrsh=oldier, hawkeye, and what if-plus most of the phase 4 movies. Note that all of those shows involve the movie characters on the small screen.
Kevin Feige said that they were excited to have a new format to tell stories. Episodic tv is more similar to the comics original format-it seemed like a perfect fit and wanda vision fit that format perfectly. You could not have told that story in any other medium. It had to be a TV show.
Falcon and the winter soldier also looked fantastic. That opening aerial canyon chase could have been in any MCU film. Sure, it had its problems-as the excellent channel den of nerds pointed out, they had to rewrite the show to get rid of a plague storyline. But still, the show retained the big budget feel.

We also lack a sense of timescale. The first non-post credit crossover in the MCU was 4 years in. This new phase started only 2 years ago.
So far we've had crossovers with MoM, Spider-Man, Shang-Chi, Quantumania, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel and The Marvels this year. The next Avengers will be 2025, which is 4 years in -- right on schedule.
We're actually moving MUCH faster than the first time they did this but people are imagining an MCU structurally identical to the end of the last cycle instead of the beginning. So people want everything to already be built instead of waiting for Marvel to build it up.

I'm loving this show! It's disappointing to hear that others aren't. I don't need action scenes every 2 minutes and stupid quips, I love watching great actors working together with compelling dialogue and mystery. The scene with Fury and Rhodey was probably one of my favorite MCU scenes ever, it was incredible acting from both men. And the conversation Fury and Talos had on the train was just as good. I've been getting a slightly burned out on so many cosmic / multiverse / mystic storylines lately so to go back to something more grounded in reality has been a breath of fresh air. This show is fantastic as far as I'm concerned. My only disappointment is that it's half over already.

Nah, there’s legit issues with the show. You’re not addressing any of the points made in the video that you disagree with. Instead you take the lazy way of invalidating criticism by claiming they’re only saying this to get views or be contrarian.
I enjoy the show. All three people in this video mostly enjoy the show. The acting has mostly been fantastic. That said, this Fury doesn’t resemble the man we’ve know for years now. Frankly, he’s just being an ass for the sake of it. Fury has always been a tactician and planned his moves carefully. He was obviously someone to not mess because everyone knows his serious and stern nature is not an act. But this current Fury is a jerk, for no reason, and he’s alienating himself from all his allies. I don’t think this is story driven, it’s just a confused portrayal of the character.

It sounds like you all are expecting a faithful full on adaptation of the comics rather than accepting it for what it is. Based on what you have shared about the comics, I don't see how a single movie would be making this story better. And if a full comic adaption is what you wanted, I think a full on phase-long arc would be needed.

I agree! I love dialog and character driven movies. The action is fine, but I tend to tune out portions of the third act in MCU films because they are often very comic-booky and ridiculously bombastic. MCU films are successful because they have both the dialogue, character development , and the action that comic book lovers want. I am fine with less action, if I get “chewing the scenery” level dialogue, which I think this show has.

While I'm glad Secret Invasion is an episodic series, it would have been better if it had been a movie.
The main problem with the last phase is introducing new characters who are not connected to the main characters. We also haven’t had a reunion with any of the original Avengers. No way would Thor & Bruce not connect post-Blip. The fact Sam & Clint haven’t even talked to each other is wild considering they were both on Team Cap in Civil War.
Honestly, the mini reunion between Rhodey & Sam in TFATWS doesn’t count simply because that reunion was too short (though it might be important for Secret Invasion), but the lack of connectivity is awful.

  • @lucasyoung9594
    @lucasyoung9594 Před 10 měsíci +1

I'm not really enjoying Secret Invasion that much, it does feel more obligatory at this point.
For me, one of the main issues is exactly what Alisha said, we don't really get to know the characters. I know we were introduced to some of these characters in Captain Marvel, but that was in 2019 (which is a long time in terms of trying to remember a number of characters. It also probably didn't help that I didn't even really feel attached to the characters from that movie either). But, we meet a new character (or see an already introduced character but briefly) and I think "why should I care about this person?" This happens more in Secret Invasion than not, we just meet so many characters for the first time, and we don't really get to know them well. We are just expected to think, "Ok, yeah that makes sense. I get it, they're [Fury and Priscilla] married and that means I should feel connection". But I didn't see it happen and so it's really hard to care about their [Fury and Priscilla] relationship. Gravik, I don't really know him and there was like one scene that explained why he is choosing to do all this? And pretty much the same for all the other characters who we didn't meet extensively in past movies/TV shows (mostly movies).
I agree with a lot of SC said here, that these would have been better in films (or they should have at least put a bigger budget and made the TV shows better quality). And yeah, seeing the Skrulls copy the actual heroes would have been much more interesting.
Lastly, there are just too many competing "end of the world" scenarios in the MCU: Kang, Secret Invasion, possibly the Eternals Celestials, other multi-versal beings introduced in Dr. Strange (although this is probably Kang related anyway). They really should have just focused on one of those and introduced it more like they did with Thanos, lots of hints and cameos leading to it. Example for Secret Invasion => post-credit scene: a superhero is called to action somehow, like they hear a mugging or something, nothing that they think they couldn't take on on their own. But then are overtaken by Skrulls and taken over, kidnapped and then the Skrull turns into them. (E.g. in an example: Sam Wilson (Falcon) is out running when he sees something suspicious in an alley, someone being mugged. He goes to intervene only to see that it's Steve Rodgers (a Skrull) doing the mugging. Sam is confused and emotions arise and is therefore a little debilitated. Not wanting to hurt Steve, he gets close and talks to him, only to find that it was a ruse and the one being mugged is a skrull actor, and other skrulls in hiding come out, just before they tranquilize Sam, Rodgers morphs into Sam right before his very eyes. Sam is taken to a secret location and is put in those machines we saw from the show. Last scene, we see Sam (the Skrull) interacting with other Avengers, and they are unaware. There is just a lot going on in the MCU now and it makes it harder to get invested into any one direction.
There is so much more to be said about this and why it's not really working that well and that it just feels more obligatory than enjoyment (at least from my opinion).

And one does not see Spielberg or Scorsese doing television. Just because the characters can have stories that fit either format doesn't mean that the writers, directors, and others have the same skills that work interchangeably in both formats. Thanks for acknowledging it out loud, because it is rare for critical reviews to be actually critical. Plus, Doug is getting better at his product advertising support.

Also, the biggest issue with the new phases is that there is no clear picture how these are all intertwined. It looks s almost like we are seeing the buildup of like three separate phases, but we don’t know it yet. The shows should be the connective tissue guiding the connections between the movies.
And the movies need to connect better as well. I went from seeing all the movies opening weekend to not even seeing Ant-Man 3 or Guardians 3 in the theaters. The buzz is gone because the bigger picture is too loose and unstructured.

i can agree that Secret Invasion wouldve made an excellent movie, but it wouldve had to be spread over several movies, like Thanos, to fully capture the scope of the subject. what makes the series work, so far, is that it does channel the focus through a single POV. i do worry that 6 episodes are not enoigh; the story feels like it'll need at least 8 episodes to expand its POV out into the rest of the MCU where Fury is less of a factor. but if all this series does is give us Super Skrulls to battle the Fantastic Four then that is more than enough.

Image we were told about Melinda May's Bahrain backstory in a 30s dialogue - that she failed to save a child but fought off a dozen men - without seeing her struggle for multiple episodes, the actual event, etc., but use that 30s dialogue to drive the story plot. That would feel cheap. Here Fury has 30 years of relationship with the Skrulls, and decades of relationship with his wife. But these relationships are summed up in 2 dialogues (Fury with wife and Fury with Talos). How can it not feel hollow?

"Secret Invasion" is better than it's being given credit for. It's not the CGI heavy splash that you'd want from a Marvel show, but it shouldn't have to be in order to be good. It has a rather formulaic approach to a buildup, but that's not an indictment of its quality as much as it is an observation of typical spy/espionage shows. The acting is superb, the dynamic between Jackson and Mendelsohn is as good as any MCU show or movie. This show is character driven, and the only reason it's not getting the viewership it should be getting is because MCU fans have been spoiled on the extravagant and blockbuster budget grandiose. So when a show goes small and is character driven, it feels like a letdown, even though the show itself is excellent.

So far, I think the show is awesome. I get your point about it not feeling like the epic crossover event that it was in the comics, but I personally feel like that’s a good thing. A lot of MCU stories have felt like massive events, lately. So, it’s honestly refreshing to get a show that feels more grounded and focused. With projects like Deadpool 3, The Kang Dynasty, and Secret Wars on the horizon, I like that Marvel Studios decided to make the Secret Invasion storyline more small scale compared to the other MCU projects.
As for your take on the Disney+ shows, I’m in the same boat. I love the shows, and I can’t wait to see the other upcoming ones like Echo and Daredevil. But, at the same time, they did suffer from being released too early. Bob Iger is very much a quality over quantity kind of guy. That’s why the MCU is the box office juggernaut that it is. But, unfortunately, Bob Chapek was the exact opposite. He was a quantity over quality kind of guy. Which is the worse thing to be when running a major company like Disney. It’s exactly why the DCEU and Sony’s Spider-Man Universe had such a bad reception. Rushing out movies and shows for quick cash is a terrible business strategy. Sure, you’ll make money, but it’s in sacrifice of what could potentially be quality storytelling.
Now, I don’t blame Marvel for the issues regarding Disney+. Every decision that was made was clearly enforced by Chapek. Due to the pandemic shutting everything down, Disney was losing money, and instead of giving the shows the necessary time they needed to properly finish, Chapek rushed them out as soon as possible just to make back the money they lost during COVID. But, even with those setbacks, Marvel still managed to put out shows that were still entertaining and still retained a bit of that spark that Phases 1-3 had. I’m a Phase 4 defender, and I always will be. But, Chapek completely rushed out these projects and is asking for too much. And I agree that some shows would’ve been more beneficial if they were movies. As well as movies like Eternals needing to be a show instead so they have more time to develop the characters.
Luckily, Iger’s back as CEO, and the MCU is getting back to its original quality over quantity strategy that made it a success. I have high hopes for the MCU and its future, and I will always be a fan. Phase 5 might’ve gotten to a rough start with Quantumania, but the rest of the Phase, I know, will go swimmingly now that Iger’s back as CEO of Disney. Kevin Feige is a genius; his work as the head of Marvel Studios cannot go unnoticed. If anyone can fix the problems caused by Chapek, it’s him.

Until a movie or series finally addresses the dead Celestial sticking out of the ocean I feel that there is going to be a somewhat disconnect with the Marvel of this Phase and the others Phases moving forward. What was great about phase 1 and 2 was that we didn't know what was coming next or if it was going to continue so we didn't have such high expectations. If we just looked at these projects as potential stand alones they are great. They are also just putting out way too many shows. Not sure if anyone agrees but I liked when the shows felt like an inside look or special thing that wasn't needed to move along the MCU. Isnt that what these show were supposed to be?
