    Dr Russ you just saved me several hundred dollars. I was told in Tennessee, according to a friend, that you could hunt deer with a .30 cal. air rifle. I went to Pyramyd Air and discovered its .357. I cancelled my order for the .30 cal. and will make another selection tomorrow. Thank you for the informative videos. Keep them coming.

    Hi, Doc. I absolutely love your videos. When you say that you read and answer your comments, that's absolutely true. You've answered several of mine. Thank you. I'm the guy with the California Agricultural Pest Control Operator's license. Remember me? Anyway, my yard is only about 100 feet wide. So, I bought a Gamo Whisper Fusion Pro in .177. I just wanted to thank you, for kind of validating my decision to get such a small caliber. I just plink in the back yard. I don't hunt animals. I used hunt when I was younger. And I ate everything I hunted. But I'm 71 years old now. I just plink. By the way, with my Gamo Whisper Fusion Pro, I cut a beer bottle cap in half, at 30 feet. It shoots a composite non-lead pellet at 1420 feet per second. But I just use whatever lead pellet that Walmart sells, at 7.9 grains. It's sub-sonic, and I can cut a beer bottle cap in half, on my property. Who would ever need more than that? Thanks, Doc. By the way, are you an actual M.D. or Ph.D.?

    • @drsrussandpaula
      @drsrussandpaula  Před 3 lety +2

      Glad to hear from you Humanity... let me suggest that you push those pellets into the magazine an extra 1/16th of an inch with a ball point pen so that the black rubber retainer band slips into the waist of your pellets.... that will keep them from dropping out when you cock your air gun. Yes, I remember you from your earlier email on pest control. I am glad that you are enjoying your air gun and its great accuracy and power. I retired last September at age 75.... and my doctorate decree is in Divinity. I counseled clergy of all denominations and a lot of their parishioners too. In my pest control business I killed hundreds of pigeons and rats with a variety of air-guns.
    When using 177's I learned to aim for head shots for quick, clean kills.
    Often the range was close so I could use pistols. Here again head shots were very effective even with CO2 guns.
    I noticed that the 22 caliber was more effective on body shots.
    The 22 caliber seems to have a higher DRT ( Dead Right There) ratio than the 177 on a variety of critters. Up too rabbit size animals anyway.
    Over the years I have been to many store closing sales and found that 22 caliber pellets were still there when the sale got down to 70% off.
    I bought all they had at that point.
    Usually the brand was Crossman domed pellets. They shoot ok.
    I have a tool box full of 22 pellets that I bought cheap. Those are the reasons why I like the 22 caliber guns.
    Thanks for all you do.

    I like .30 for semi auto "tactical" home defense applications. Easier to handle in a tight space than a big bore hunting rifle, and probably more than sufficient to neutralize a threat. Hatsan Blitz and AEA HP SS .30+ are a couple nice examples.

    • @Parapon3ra
      @Parapon3ra Před 3 lety +3

      The AEA Assassin in .25 would probably be a better choice than the HP SS .30+ for home defense. The latter is a bit underpowered for a .30 @ 50 FPE. The Assassin is actually slightly more powerful (55 FPE) with a flatter trajectory. Also it has the removable suppressor. You could use H&N Hornets (if they fit the mag) or JSB Hades.

    • @jdp5704
      @jdp5704 Před 3 lety +1

      @@Parapon3ra or the AEA Backpacker in .30 which would be a little more powerful due to extra barrel length. Depends what trade offs. The SS 30+ comes in right about at 48 ft lbs. Sounds underwhelming maybe, but I've got a red dot on it and this is for close quarters and quick shots.
      Anything longer range and it will be the AEA Challenger 357 with a 9 shot magazine of 132 grain slugs or maybe the Umarex Gauntlet 2 in .25 that's on the way which seems to like ~34 grain+ ammo best for up to around 55 fpe.
      But of course target shooting is my hobby and hopefully these scenarios never occur.

      Jr. Dupuy ... Each gun is a little different .... try to stay with a barrel that is 20 inches or longer.... and shoot 100 to 200 pellets down the barrel... which acts like sand paper ... in taking off tiny curls and nicks in the rifling that is only visible with a microscope. After that, I would stay with lubed pellets to keep the air pressure behind the pellet ... to maintain a sweet spot of 800 to 950 fps. Please keep us in your air gun experiences loop ... Dr. Russ

    Hey Dr. Russ, Hello from across the state SW Michigan. I have a .45 or rather a .458 pcp for deer hunting but been looking at which caliber to go for smaller game here in Michigan. Squirrel, rabbit, and also varmint control raccoon, woodchuck, and possibly coyote. I'm not going inexpensive so whatever caliber I decide on I can turn down if a .25 or .30. Don't expect would have to turn a .22 down unless I was inside a barn pest control. With the availability, price, and variety of rounds I was dead set on a .22 but now questioning now if a .25 or even .30 would be best. Nothing is in stock right now so I guess that gives me plenty of time to research. I was disappointed to find out the FX dealer on the East side of the state is not in business anymore.

When done correctly, there are 357's that deliver more punch than 25 and 30 calibers... where heavy pellets and slugs are not readily available. Hey Russ I've got a question for you and you never seem really anybody ever discuss it or really even show it how often should you clean an airgun Barrel and how many shot through it before you think it should be clean and how do you go about cleaning your big bore air rifle Don

    • @russjones6497
      @russjones6497 Před 3 lety +2

      good to hear from you Don Wilson... Some like to clean after every use.... but I believe air guns need cleaning less frequent than powder guns ... which leave all types of residue in the barrel and breach. The frequency part of your question will become obvious after a few cleanings ... which reveal how much dirt there is after 100 ... 300 ... or 500 pellets fired thru it. Your frequency will be different from mine if we use different types of pellets ... and if one of us washes them first and then re-lubes them... It will be different if one of us checks for round skirts ... and the other doesn't. You get the idea. Lastly, it is important how thorough of a job we do ... wire brush ... cleaner .... etc. So run a patch down the barrel frequently into the breach ... looking for how much dirt is there now.... and the answer for you and your gun will become obvious. Lastly, I re-lube my pellets after washing them ... and I stack my air rifles barrel down for a few days ... making sure that the lube hasn't turned into oil and is moving filings and dirt down into the mechanics of the gun. Now to answer your question.... I clean after about 300 rounds. Please keep us in your air gun loop of experiences... Dr. Russ
