- Step by Step guide on how to get LG Magic Remote to work with a Sonos soundbar. Reference: support.sonos.com/s/article/3...
My updated video using a 2022 C2 OLED: • Using LG Magic Remote ...
Update 1: I tested the solution with a C9 OLED and the 2013 style Sonos soundbar. I have also been able to use this technique on a C6 OLED. Some replies are suggesting this method may not work with a CX
Update 2: If you have a Beam or are getting the Sonos Arc with HDMI ARC, everything should work as expected after selecting HDMI ARC as the output choice. The hack offered in this video should not be necessary.

Very helpfull. Thank you!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
My interface was a little different on the tv but these steps were close enough to what I needed and I got it to work! Thanks for the video brother 🤘🏼
This video needs more likes and shares. It was very clear and straight to the point. Thank you!
You’re the man I was looking all over for this. There has been an update I believe however and Sonos instead of Phillips now works. And you don’t have to set it up in SONOS app now after, just click Sonos on the TV screen and the LG remote will work. I have a shield tv device and my shield remote is connected via the SONOS app remote settings. I can now use the shield remote and simultaneously use my LG remote to adjust the volume on my LG CX TV. I don’t have an Apple TV yet but this concept should work the same for those for have one. So that both of your remotes work for volume adjusting.
Thanks a lot! This helped me out with my Denon HEOS soundbar. It cost me 2 hours of my life before I found your video, but still .. it works !
Cool, glad it transferred 👍
Thank you for this ,I recently gave away my Sonos play base to my friends & couldn’t link the magic remote to it.
They have to use the Apple TV remote to control the sound.
Much appreciated.🤩👌
Very helpful! Thanks for doing this video! I have a Roku which after doing the connection it also worked with volume and power on/off on the remote.
Sweet!! Thank you! Ended several days of frustration!
Great video. Thanks so much. Worked for my Sonos Play Base EXACTLY as directed. AWESOME.
Amazing Video! Well done!
The only option that actually works! this is great!
Wow! This video is so helpful. Thanks so much. Saved me so much time. I would not of figured this out on my own😓
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! THIS WAS ACTUALLY HELPFUL i tried to get help from Sonos and they couldn't help. But this was actually helpful even though my menu was a tiny bit different I was able to follow along! Also i read that Philips works better when connecting to Sonos but it did end up being the Sonos connection. The point we getting to that menu though
Thanks so much! This worked for my Linsar webOS TV with my Sonos playbar.
Thank you for this helpful video. My LG TV has a different menu, and the Sonos isn’t listed under devices, but typing ‘Sonos’ in the search bar makes it magically appear. The setup has to be completed in the Sonos app on a phone or iPad. The volume control and mute button are now working well. 🙏🏻
Not sure which search bar you are referring to. I purchased the LG OLED C1. I am still being bounced back and forth between tech support at Sonos and LG.
@@jdpjr2502 If you find the part of the menu that lists all the soundbars- Panasonic, LG etc and Sonos is missing, then type in Sonos and it appears in a list of just Sonos. Select Sonos and you’re nearly done. You will have to complete the installation on your Sonos App.
@@stp926 I’m having the same issue as the guy above. I can’t even find the menu that lists all the sound bars. I have a brand new LG G1 OLED.
That worked. Thanks.
@@bluikart I have the same TV as you. I hope you have managed to install your Sonos by now?
Great instruction thanks, worked on the first attempt!
Thank you for this!!
Thanks man!!! Glad I found this, was getting a little frustrated to say the least!! 🤗
Thank you for a helpful video 😊👍
Thanks man, that helped me so much
Thank you sir! Great video 👌🏽
Firmware update from LG on my Oled 55 CX5LB has largely solved this. I now have firmware version 3.11.x; follow the standard directions, the trick is not to select Philips in the ready made list but to search for Sonos, which pops up even though it isn't in the visible list. It then all works - EXCEPT that the mute button on my smart remote still doesn't work. But although it's a bit irritating, I can live with that. Hours of frustration now largely behind me and I don't need to use my Sky remote to operate my Sonos Soundbar volume any more!
You sir are a genius!! Just got my brand new 2021 NanoCell working with your instructions. Best thing is the Sky Q remote also still controls the Soundbar volume!! Didn't have to do anything in the Sonos Controller app.
Thanks a lot man, the video got me a long way, but the trick was what you described with searching sonos. Cheers!
My maaaan!
You fixed it.🤗🤗🤗🤗 Shame on the ...
great video... got it to work... very clear instructions.. Thanks Much!
👍
Thank you....extremely helpful
Thanks! Glad you found it.
Mannn thank you so much for this video!!! I almost sold my system
Thank you so much!
Thank you ! Like some people it was not working with the « Phillips » setting but I finaly found sonos by typing it. I Hope I will not have to do it again.
There are changes with OS and tv model year - but hopefully it provides enough clues to get it to work
Nice video helped me 👍😁
Glad it helped!
Thank you so much!❤️
You are so welcome!
Awesome thanks for the video
Thank you!!!
Thank you!
Thanks a lot!!!
Worked perfectly
Thanks so much
Thanks, its working!
Awesome 👍
Awesome video, thanks! Side note, mine works using Sonos instead of Philips, although Philips works too!
Nice job man. Thank you. It worked for us. I was getting quite frustrated. Problem solved
Glad it worked!
Thank you so much for this! I was so frustrated by the default instructions! It works perfectly now!
Thank you for the vid - it worked!! But why such a convoluted setup procedure? No average user would ever be able to figure this out on their own. Sonos or LG needs to address this!
Sonos addressed it by adopting e/ARC as the connection method in its updated bars. But that doesn’t really help the Playbar owners unfortunately
Thanks!!!
It works, when you choose „Samsung“ and not „Philipps“
I‘ve a 2021 LG OLED C1
Thanks this works for me!
Thank you for this video. Very helpful!! Curious why you can't use the Sonos selection under the manufacturer selection.
Didn’t work at the time (early 2020 with a 2019 LG OLED)
There are many issues with the LG OLED CXPUA series. With headphones plugged into the output on the back, they only work if 'Audio out(line out)' is chosen. Then if 'Wired Headphones' is chosen, no audio at all.
Good info! thanks for posting
So my TV is a newer model and it doesn’t have that list of devices. What can I do ?
For anyone who owns a 2020 CX LG TV and is having issues, here is what I did to connect my Sonos Playbar to the TV
1. Connect Optical Cable to Tv from Playbar.
2. Push the button next to the power button on the magic remote.
3. Say Yes to Top Box support.
4.Follow directions and add your Playbar to the devices.
Hope this Helps
The community salutes your service
Getting Sonos Arc next week, will i have the same problem? Or this is only issue with Playbar?
This worked. Thank you my man.
Is your hdmi eARC plugged in as well?
So I did all the steps (as with others I have a different menu tree - anyway got to the point when I have to push the plus - it worked - push the plus three times says it works - play the TV (either Netflix on app) or connected PC - push the volume button - get a picture with vol pictures and the plus and minus signs flash but volume doesn’t change
Gracias si funciona....
For everyone That still have problems. I a have Sonos Ray. For newer lg tvs it still works. You must search for sonos in universal settings in optical and it should perfectly work. You do not need the app for a setup. Sorry for my english 😅
This should not be an issue with an ARC/eARC connection (Sonos Beam and following products)- I would not use optical if the ARC connection is there - the remote setup should work normally with that connection
If you really want to know......Do it this way on an LG TV or Projector after 2018 or so. You have to almost trick it on a prior to 2018 model. Go to input selection/All all inputs and Edit Universal Control, then select Optical Input and not HDMI, then go to Other-Sounbar and select your brand and usually it will be a remote, that isn't the #1 remote. My Bose was #4. Point the remote at the soundboard to make sure it is reviewing an IR signal when the light blinks. You can't test volume +, when there is no sound. It works very well now. Channel works with HDMI 1 and Volume on the Soundbar. Same with other inputs. Once it's in Optical, it's in for all.
How far you control it because mine work on mine only if iam close
I just got the LG OLED CX. In my interface once I go to All Settings > Connection, I don’t see a “Device Connector” option. I see “Device Connection settings, which doesn’t have this navigation to get to the sound bar and what not. What am I missing?
Did you manage to fix it? I'm in the same situation as you were.
@@vattenapple Yes. I will post instructions shortly.
Does not work on actual LG tvs anymore.
Stumped as can’t connect using this method with LG GX since now with the new webOS and has sonos as the manufacturer. Tried using Philips but doesn’t work either. Using my old tv remote (Sony) that still works with the new set up. So can’t replace my remote to LG magic remote. ‘+’ Buttons press prompts within Sonos App doesn’t respond when pressed. Any hints would be greatly appreciated.
I heard that sometimes the output will switch back to TV speakers. Can you make sure that output is still optical. I have a C9 and C6 and this method works fine. Trying to get to the bottom of why some users are having issues. I’ll post updates if I get smarter. Sorry it didn’t work for you. It’s pretty annoying.
Ok so it appears to be the latest LG remote for the GX TV... I have a C9 tv magic remote which works but when using the GX remote it doesn’t.
La Chang Interesting, I can bring this up in the description. Seems the new Sonos soundbar will support IR ... so that's an expensive fix 😂
Can’t find the device connector anymore. Maybe an update removed it
Thanks for the video but unfortunately my oledcx tv has webOS version 5.2.1 - 290906 and doesn’t have the Device Connector setting and I can’t see a way to continue. Any suggestion please?
Me too!! Don't have device connector.
Me too. Help!
@@Kabeljauwsje I eventually figured it out and it does work. Can't remember how though. I think I found another CZcams video online when explained it differently. Good luck.
good day, thanks for the tutorial. i tried to follow it but i crashed in the sonos setup app. I don't have a choice of remote control setup here. I am doing something wrong? Thank you
If you’re setting up an optical sound bar you should have the remote option. Go to the room in settings and look for remote control setup above Hardware
@@neverenoughtech Thank You
Still won’t work;( I have to turn off my tv before I can connect the remote on the app and after I turn on the tv, the remote stop working
Hi Bastian, did you find the issue in the meantime? I'm having the same issue.
I Just ordered the LG OLED CX which will arrive Thursday, I have the Sonos Playbar 5.1 Surround sound system, I just read the LG CX does not support Optical and the Playbar only connects threw Optical any solutions if not i will have to cancel my tv order.
Some have suggested solutions in the comments. I have not been able to confirm these solutions. Sorry that’s the best I have for you. The CX was not even released when I did the video.
The LG OLED CX does support optical. You will not be able to use the CX remote to control your Soundbar. My hack was to program my cable remote to control the soundbar, now at least I don’t have to use the application - which frankly is a pain.
@@wizowood Thank you for the information
Hi, I just got a new LG Cx and I cant find the device connector, I looked where you said and it wasnt there. Is there something im doing wrong?
I feel bad about it but I don’t have a CX my video was released even before it was released I believe. My method seems to only work on 2019 and earlier. Honestly I’m not sure there is a good solution for the CX and playbar based on the comments. I can confirm that the ARC Sonos soundbars do not have the problems the optical connection is causing.
Go to "Device Connection Settings" then "Universal Control Setting".
Hi I have just got a new 2020 LG 48CX and managed to get the magic remote to work ok with Sonos playbar via Optical connection. I did Settings : All settings :Connection : Device Connection Settings : Universal Control Settings : Connect to a new device : Bluetooth / Soundbar : Choose Optical connection then type in Sonos in free field. It recognised it and works fine. Hope it works for others.
@@chrisgf1884 Thank you so much!
@@chrisgf1884 Thank you - typing in 'sonos' in the text field did the trick for me. Cheers.

Using LG Magic Remote to control volume on Sonos Playbar and Playbase (2022 Update)
czcams.com/video/TC8b7p7rOgg/video.html
Try this
I am having this issue but I am connected via HDMI ARC
It would have to be with a different bar then as the playbar doesn’t have an ARC port
I want to utilize the eARC capabilities of my TV. If i connect it as optical in this manner will it still work and have the same features as eARC ?
By the way it’s crazy how it’s almost 2023 and people are still having this problem !
No, optical is very limited compared to eARC in terms of data rate and supported audio codecs. For instance optical does not support Atmos or any audio format above 5.1
I very much appreciate the reply back thank you!
I guess i’ll have to keep searching for a solution to my problem regarding my Sonos & LG TV
It was working fine till the moment I had to reset mij c6
Now I cant Connect the lg remote anymore. The Fhilips way dont work for me. And the Sonos app keep telling me dat there is A remote allready connect!
Anyone here that can help????
So I have to switch from HDMI ARC to Optical when connecting Sonos to my tv for this to work?
You know. I have a Sonos bean just not connected to one of my LGs. I need to get off my butt and answer this question for good. I would choose HDMI ARC but might need to do that Phillips selection process. I’ll find out
HDMI ARC works perfectly fine without a need to do the silly philips trick. There is even a direct Sonos choice. This worked on my C9
@@neverenoughtech it does not work for me, tried today; can you please mention the steps how to add magic remote to sonos arc 5.1 on lg c9? thanks in advance.
@@bhatikuldeep did u manage to pair your lg magic remote? I have been trying to past 2 months. My sky remote does work, but not pairing with my lg magic remote.
I guess optical audio cannot controllled with magic remote.
Further complexity added as other brands like Zebronics are not shown.
Sonos app doesn't recognize my remote... i do the setting on my tv c9 oled (add remote for soundbar, Philips)
Someone have this problem ?
Hmmm I did my video using a C9 so not sure what is happening on your end. Possible an update has poopooed the method 🙁. I suppose make sure you are pointing the remote at the Playbar itself
@@neverenoughtech same issue for me:/. All settings correct but won’t change volume.
Select "LG" instead of Sonos or Phillips
Shame it's such a pain in the bum to get this done. I rather have a remote than using an app especially if you have 2 routers at home and have to be on the same network as your speaker. Just painful.
When I connect the universal remote to the Soundbar the subwoofer stops working. This shouldn't be this hard, come on LG
not working on 2020 tv LG running sonos play bar . no help at all from lg . please reply if anyone can help
This seems to be a common issue. Unfortunately I don’t have a 2020 LG to experiment. My method worked on a 2019 TV. I know this is not helpful but you should know others are sharing your misery.
Did you figure it out my cx is working with the remote
@@kingkendrick80 Is mute working? I can control volume up and down but Playbar doesn't register mute.
@@rtbwolf no mute never worked
could not fix it . so ended up use ikea remote for sound works grate . but cost a bit and yes you need a hub .
like others, I have a new CX and this doesn't work for my playbar and remote.
Yeah, I did this before the CX was released. I don’t currently have one. I did mention which models I was able to make this methods work in the description as not to mislead. Hope you are able to find a solution.
NeverEnoughTech I appreciate you making the video nonetheless for others.
I just bought the CX 2020 and Playbar and they wont sync. Im not sure if I should call Sonos or LG. It is a royal pain to have to use the app to raise and lower the voume.
I have a new CX also it partly worked. The volume is working but not the mute button.
traveller09 I think it had an update. I can get my remote to control the volume now.
Didn't work for me :( Perhaps because I have a new 2020 LG model.
I would just ask if you are pointing it at the Sonos IR receiver when setting up in SONOS app. Wish it worked for you.
As stated above, I have the same issue. Have LG GX with WebOS 5.0. Trying to figure it out in this topic: www.avforums.com/threads/issue-with-using-lg-magic-remote-with-lg-tv-to-control-sonos-playbar.2284627/ feel free to join the discussion there, it is now only me and someone who got it magically to work.
Same Problem..the new 2020 86“ and it doesnt work :(
Same LG 55" 2020 tv doesn't work for SONOS sound bar. But I bought a SONOS ARC for my other new LG 86" 2020 TV and that one works. Both with LG magic remotes. 1 works with new ARC the other having issues with older sound bar
Is it working
does not work for a LG C2 and the MAgic remote :(
Each year the options and interface changes. Don’t have an updated LG to update the video
@@neverenoughtech hoping to see and update from ya :)
This didn’t work with my remote. Others do work, frustrating my old LG remote worked fine.
Hmmm. Curious which remote you are using. Is it a Magic remote or a third party? This method worked with my C6 and C9 remotes. I’m assuming during setup you were pointing the remote at the Sonos. Anyway, sorry it didn’t work for you.
Yeah, I'm not having any luck either. But I have the sonos arc with the cx series lg magic remote. It shows it as connected, but not functioning.
@@mr.goodie4431 I solved the issue, you can't have any other devices connected to the Magic Remote. The moment I connect my PS4 or set top box, it doesn't work anymore. Remove these and then it's fine. Also you may need to turn off the auto universal remote connection (otherwise my PS4 kept auto adding to it).
@@EUCitizenFedUpWithAllThisCrap you're right, had to remove Xbox and set top box... Mute doesn't work though... Any more tips?
Thy, but unfottunately it‘s not working with my bx9. I did it exactly as explained but at the end nothing happens when i try to connect it to the sonos app. When i press the sound up button as requested by the app nothing happens. Have you got an idea what to do? Many thanks
I have the just delivered LG OLED65CXPUA and I have a Sonos Playbar and your system doesn’t work. I have tried all suggestions. So far, nobody is correct.
Sorry to hear that, I did state in the description which systems it works (C6, C9 I tested). I would like to get my hands on a CX to investigate. I can say Sonos via ARC does not lead to these problems. But I know that’s little comfort to you.
Tim does the Playbar connect to the LG CX? From what i read this model does not support Optical and i have the Playbar my CX comes in in 2 days, I need to find out so i know to cancel or not
@@monroethegreat7539 yes it only connect via optical and it does not work
@@timothysagehorn9438 So your confirming The Playbar does not work with LG OLED CX?
@@monroethegreat7539 Incorrect. It does work using optical from the LG OLED65CXPUA. The not so great remote that comes with the LG TV will not operate the Sonos Playbar. When attempting to setup the LGTV to work with a soundbar, Sonos is one one the choices, but I am assuming that refers to using and HMDI_Arc method of getting audio to the sandbar. Sonos has a new soundbar the Arc that has eArc operation available. One can't get a new Sonos Arc until November. That, and the Sonos item we have is titled 'Playbar', not soundbar, and it came out over 4 years ago and wasn't particularly designed for use for TV. Just have a decent optical cable to connect the Playbar. You might notice a bit of 'clipping', or some distortion when occasional loud audio happens, There is no way yo adjust the level of the optical output from the LGTV item. That, and when you choose optical for the audio output from the LGTV, basically all other audio outputs cease to function. If you have a wifi headset connected, you will only have a few choices of getting audio to them. One, just wired headphones, one WH+internal speakers, which aren't terrible.
Not working on LG C9 with WebOs 04.71.25 fw. #testing
I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for the feedback. I’m 99.99% sure you are doing this but just a reminder to point the remote at the Sonos IR sensor. Or make sure it’s not blocked.
@@neverenoughtech Yes of course ;) Almost shouted the signal to the sonos but unfortunately it still did not work.
I reset my remote and was able to get it to work. Again 99.9% sure you did this but did you do the set up remote in Sonos app part?
@@neverenoughtech Yes, followed the instruction to the "letter". Also tried the Philips alternative, which seems to work for the C8's. Same result unfortunately.
That’s weird, my video features a C9. Have you tried other alternatives besides Philips? Blowing into the remote? Resetting the remote? Power cycling Sonos? These are the kinds of steps I would be taking at this point.
This video is outdated, you need to select LG, not Philips!
I updated it: Using LG Magic Remote to control volume on Sonos Playbar and Playbase (2022 Update)
czcams.com/video/TC8b7p7rOgg/video.html
I've managed to do it finally!
what I did-
Part One - this should set up the TV/Remtoe to send an IR signal to Sonos Playbar
LG settings -
Sound
Additional Settings
DTV Audio Setting - Auto
LG Sound Sync - Off
Digital Sound Out - Pass Through
Part Two
LG Settings -
Connection
Device Connection Settings
Universal Control Settings
(I have no universal remotes setup here yet)
Connecting to a new device
Next
Bluetooth/Sound Bar
Next
Optical
Next
Philips
Before pressing next on the TV make sure you have the Sonos app open at the following page-
SONOS APP-
Settings>System>(Room with Playbar)>Remote Control Setup>(Possibly will say “Replace current remote - if already set up to an old tv)>Continue
Back to the TV
Next
this then should sync the Playbar and Remote/TV together
Done
This sucks SONOS ARC dont have Bluetooth
