  • Dragon age is a series that ever since Origins has been completely and utterly incapable of figuring out what the hell it's supposed to be! And Dragon Age: The Veilguard the replacement for Dragon Age Dread Wolf looks set to continue that tradition by grand slamming another nail deep into the Bioware coffin! Long may it's woke remains burn in dragon fire!

Modern Bioware will give you pronoun options, though.
Then you'll have people come out of the woodwork to say it makes perfect sense for a medieval-fantasy setting to have non-binary pronouns, that it totally isn't the developers' (or consultants) ideological beliefs bleeding into the game.

The horrid fate that befell the other women, including the main character's cousin, served as a reminder of what could have happened to the protagonist had she not been given combat lessons in private by her deceased mother.

One of the biggest problems with modern writing, which is all over this trailer as well, is the writers' refusal to take their own work seriously. They have to throw in goofiness, gags, etc, and one of the laziest ones that's been overdone to death is the "casual conversation happens while violence occurs in the background" right there in the center of this thing.
And besides the obvious, bad DEI hires for the crew, I also blame the past 20 years and how many times I saw the phrase "takes itself too seriously" presented as if it were actual criticism to dark and/or drama pieces from critics who refused to believe anything could be good without comic relief. And now writers are terrified of being labeled with it, it seems, so they make everything lighthearted and goofy.
Simple fact is when the writer themselves doesn't take their work seriously, neither will the audience. Why get invested in something that isn't invested in itself, after all?

Dragon Age: Origins was an absolute masterpiece.
Dragon Age 2 was actually still pretty great. The scope was far smaller, but the tone was still suitably grim with a tight narrative and some of the best character writing in the series. It was heavily marred by its production limitations and the direction the team was pushed in to increase accessibility, though. There's no way around that.
Inquisition was simultaneously a return to form and a departure from tone. We were back to globe-trotting, world-shaking escapades, but the edge was dulled and the actual game design was even weaker than DA2. It was not until Tresspasser- a considerably more "Dragon Age" chunk of game that I really came around on it, and, even then it remains a distant third.

To be honest, I liked DA2; it wasn't perfect, certainly had its flaws (particularly the combat and repetitive maps), but I appreciated the core story and how it unfolded over time. Sadly it never really got a sequel; Inquisition simply wasn't a Dragon Age game, I don't think, and by then the Golden Age of Bioware had long since ended. And on top of that Inquisition was the first major instance of Bioware bending its lore over backwards and breaking its back to accommodate what is now in vogue these days.

yep DA:O was basically a selfcontained game with little room for a sequel so DA2 felt like a setup for a bigger series of games (at least 1 or 2 more) by fleshing out the lore a bit (especieally of the chantry and the mages) and introducing and setting off the big conflict between those 2 but it never got any real follow up which is a real shame because i would have loved a game all about that war (and being able to actually make choices to influence it DA:O style) but instead we got inquisition

DA: Origins had a long and troubled develpment. And was kinda looking outdated when it came out. Ironically the graphics and artstyle have aged better than other contemporary games. But back in 2009 DA: Origins looked kinda outdated. But it didn't matter because its characters, story and atmosphere was timeless. Not to mention the game and it's gameplay being the spiritual successor to games like Baldurs gate and CRPG's for the 7th gen era. Which in itself was novel and a breath of fresh air for the time.
This is the complete opposite. It's neither timeless or a breath of fresh air. DA is dead and the signs were already there with Dragon Age 2.

"I... I do not remember your love, Ellesime. I have tried to. I tried recreating it, to spark it anew but it is gone. A hollow, dead thing. For years I clung to the memory of it, then the memory of the memory and then nothing. The Seldarine took that away from me too! I look upon you and feel nothing. I remember nothing but you turning your back for me alongside the others. Once my thirst for power was everything, now I hunger only for revenge... AND I. WILL. HAVE IT!" ~Jon Irenicus - Baldur's Gate 2
