Hi Matt nice video, Im very tempted to buy this laptop but I would like to ask you a couple of things: First there are lot of complains for the battery drainage on this laptop, and I was wondering if you had any issues expecially with long time rendering or work..., second, when you edit with Premiere did you transfered the footage on the xps or you worked with footage on external drives? IS there a significant difference in performance on the timeline? Thanks

Also if you plan on buying the Dell xps 17 laptop with the maxed out options and its crazy expensive (like $3,840+) wait a day or two and usually the price will go down. One time I saw it at over $3,800, and a few days later the price changed to just under 3 thousand dollars ($2,900+) almost a thousand dollars cheaper for the exact same laptop with the exact same specs. Still very expensive but a lot cheaper.

Just ordered my 17" Dell 9710 with all upgrades except ram and hard drive capacity. I compromised somewhat by getting the 1TB drive instead of the minimally available 512 GB in order to avoid having to reinstall the operating system on a new 1TB drive of my choice. When it arrives I will install my own 64 GB ram and an additional WD Black 2TB drive for my data storage. I always had good luck with the WD Black hard drives and expect to enjoy the same reliability with their SSD.s.

Good review. Thanks for all the insights. A few questions: When you said that Dell rated this XPS 17 at 7 1/2 hours battery life, was that with the UHD+4K screen or the FHD+ matte screen? If the former, how much do you know or think its battery life might be with the FHD+ matte screen? I'm torn as to which to get. I do not do gaming or video/music edition, only common home and office type stuff, including lots of streaming and movies, with lots of windows and Chrome tabs open at once, though long hours online 5-7 days a week. And have you seen what both types of screens look like, do you have an opinion as to how much better the UHD+4K screen picture quality is, and whether the FHD+ matte screen picture quality is still a pretty nice picture quality? My current old 2016 Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop has QHP, and though nothing special, it's perfectly fine. Just that 4k quality just looks so incredible. Don't know, however, if the 4k matters with things not shot in 4k.
If I could get 6-7 hours or more with my frequent but more common use with the UHD+4k screen, especially if that level of battery life might last for years, I'd be very tempted, even though I've heard FHD+ matte screen gets much better battery life, because the 4k picture quality looks just so incredible, but if it ends up being closer to just 3 maybe 4 hours on the 4k screen for my use, I might go the other way. I'd welcome what you know or think about this. Thanks.

Well, from "Windows on Mac users" I've read online (not a lot obviously), they had no particular issue, it's a pretty good combo, provided you still have some minimum use for the Apple side of things, i.e. MacOS & ecosystem, otherwise, you'd pay the Apple premium for no reason...
The only difference their might be here, is while Apple has tunned MacOS for this new CPU, Windows might not be as compatible with the ARM based CPUs (well Win10 might actually run a lot better on those, considering the Windows Phone OS step we've crossed), so indeed in this case, it's not as predictable as with previous generations..
More importantly, by taking a (substantial) look at Louis Rosmann's channel, regarding Apple & the aftersale repairability, you may think twice before going the Apple road. But it's all about preferences & priorities, You decide! :)

Hi Matt, you mentioned the heat. Can you feel it where your hands are while editing? I recently got an XPS 15 and had to return it as the heat where my hands were made editing video really unpleasant. And so I'm wondering if the larger 17 is better in that way? Thank you so much 😊

Matt, I recently got this laptop. Have you noticed the gradient banding issues caused by the Dell PremierColor app?? I've seen countless people online reporting this and I have the same issue. The only way to remove it is to disable or uninstall the app. This is a big issue, cause it leaves us with the stock saturated colors...

I'm going to have to rob a bank to get it but it looks great. Fantastic review, once again. Thank you. For us newbies out there, would you consider doing a follow-up on the colour aspects (starting at 7:17) and specifically on the Dell Color software? I kind of understand the idea of switching to a neutral colour profile, but it would be great to see how it works and how you do it when you don't have the Dell software. And does this screen need to be colour-calibrated in the first place or do you use it as it comes out of the box?

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  Před 3 lety

Haha! Thanks! I would still recommend color calibrating the screen, but the neutral color profile is good if you want to edit a video that will look it’s best across the widest variety of screens

I purchased that dell xps 17 with the 2060 rtx max Q, eight cores cpu, 32gb ram, 1tb M.2 on Dec 31 2020 and returned it on Jan. 4 2021
For a laptop that costs three thousand dollars it should have met my expectations but it did not. That laptop gets extremely hot, the keyboard gets very hot as well. That thing you will not be able to place on your lap due to heat underneath ventilation . The CPU is rated to 5.1ghz turbo boost but I only saw it go up to 4.8ghz. The rtx gpu hardly gets used all I saw was the integrated gpu being utilized. The fans are always running at full blast and are loud. I got an estimate of three hours to render in premier pro an hour long 1080p video with color grading. Very disappointing. Also the laptop is pretty heavy. The display is about the only thing that I truly loved

My XPS overheats and slows down when doing the simplest editing. Even with proxies it's almost unusable. Don't be fooled by the specs, these things are thin which means they cook inside. There are endless complaints online about over-throttling in all Dell XPS models. I even had to open mine up and reapply the thermal paste, which only gave me a minor improvement. It's not a useable editing laptop in my opinion unless you work inside a fridge.

I can relate from what I saw, fortunately not from personal exprc (bc of exactly what you wrote, actually... I went the desktop DIY way).
Did you look into undervolting your laptop for thermal improvements (Intel XTU for Intel CPUs)? I read it may also help to reach acceptable (still high) temp, that can make it a barely capable editing machine on the long run.

XPS 9700 is pretty trash out of the box. I modded mine extensively and NOW it's really good. But when I got it back in august 2020, it was complete garbage.
After the undervolt and liquid metal repaste, I get around 6 hours of battery for video playback, using only 75% available charge (85-10%). A good uplift from stock. If I'm doing school work, I can easily get 7-8 hours. Video playback is quite inefficient due to 4k screen
