    FYI as a xps 17 user, the audio headphone issue is a thing. However, if you go into headphone settings and turn off "enhance audio" the problem is solved.👍👍 I'm happy with mine. Also the track pad issue I'd true as well for me. I do a mouse 90% of the time.🤘

    You can change your colour settings with Dell PremierColor to one of the standard colour gamuts if you don't like their "vibrant" mode. It's very easy and is a good way to test how video looks in a variety of scenarios.

    Thanks for the review, appreciate the honesty on the issues.
    Never understood why any hardware manufacturer has default super saturated screen calibration, which colourblind business suit decided that to be a good idea?!
    Also something as fundamental and basic as a trackpad malfunctioning on a premium model like this XPS line, does not bode well for my impression of Dell's engineering+qc

    • @bsd107
      @bsd107 Před 2 lety +3

      Totally agree about the saturated screen settings. Yet, there is a Dell app already installed that lets you immediately switch the color profile. So this is absolutely trivial to correct. No need for a ten minute discussion about the color saturation in this video.

    Appreciate your honesty, no one likes to make negative videos. I got an XPS 15 9570 a little while back and have to say it has been my worst computer purchase to date, had numerous qc issues: wonky audio, random blue screens and freezing. The motherboard, cpu and gpu have been changed twice. From the perspective of a casual user, I have no confidence in Dells products. Shame because I had high hopes for the XPS.

    Always appreciate reviews based on daily use experience and that just about sums up Dell. They can't get their quality control....err....under control. But to be fair to them, I think a lot of their issues are software related. My brother got a 2in1 recently and had the screen flickering problem. Was about to send it back but an Intel driver update fixed it. No idea if the problem was in the driver in the first place or if Intel just worked around the hardware issue. Then the screen started displaying strange artifacts and not showing colour correctly. Turned out it was some auto-adjustment based on a light sensor that is turned on by default in the graphics panel so in bright rooms it looked terrible. It took a lot of work to get it in a state he was happy with, and a lot of trust to keep it beyond the return date, so I hope it pays off. I love Dell's premium laptops but there are too many small things wrong with them and their forums and their review page is full of stories about it. Take a breath Dell. We can wait an extra 6 months for you to get it right.

    I have an XPS 15 9500. Got a replacement laptop the first day due to a wobbly trackpad. The replacement had the same issue. They replaced the top deck. Didn't get any better. Gave up as the laptop usually lives in a dock. I like the keyboard - I've got big hands so the size is perfect for me. After 8 months the surface temp probe went haywire. Got a new mainboard. Now the internal screen freezes for about 10 secs every few minutes. External displays via Thunderbolt works fine. Probably won't get a Dell next time around.

    Manufacturer’s quality control should be pristine by law, for the sake of the environment. Otherwise companies like Dell should be fined for indirectly producing E-waste from day 1 of product launch because of malfunctioning devices/parts. Like how many thousands of these laptops do they put out there just to be returned or discarded?

      @xXCorruptedzXx Před 3 lety +1

      More should be done for sure, look at Amazon simply destroying products instead of reselling - somebody would buy them, just shove them on a special deals page; it's simple.
      As for Dell... I think they count on their ProSupport service too much than actually checking the laptops at the factory. My first XPS 9510 has a bowed hinge (the screen is bowed when you look at it from the side) and the speakers crackle. My replacement has the aforementioned PLUS a loose trackpad (thought they 'fixed' that eh) and was dropped and still shipped so came damaged :))).
      To replace that hinge for the screen, they swap out the entire screen and "that's the only way". No... you replace the hinges and prevent e-waste.

    • @luispericchi9347
      @luispericchi9347 Před 3 lety

      The thing is that pristine Quality Control is extremely expensive and gets diminishing returns compared to mediocre spending. If you like that get ready for that cost to be passed on to you, the customer.

    • @xXCorruptedzXx
      @xXCorruptedzXx Před 3 lety +1

      It's true however, other companies manage just fine or resolve issues whereas Dell doesn't and those issues span multiple product generations. Take for instance the trackpad issue, all they need to do is give it a quick pat on the production line to diagnose it. What's worse is they claimed it had been fixed last year, so why has it reappeared, it's the same damn mechanism. I'd be seriously surprised if they didn't account for their quality control with the warranty they sell you. Sure, ProSupport sounds great and convenient but it likely saves Dell money to ship out whatever and let the customer fix it and then rate their warranty services. I can't blame them maximising profits, afterall, they're a business but it's shitty to overcharge customers with their price premium, pretty much force them into a warranty and then expect the customer to inform them of their product's flaws. I really hate Apple as a company but they're pretty damn solid in the QC department so why not Dell?

This is also the reason why big tech-review channels like Dave2D do not recommend them anymore, as QC has gotten much worse on Thinkpads in recent years.

    Last year at work we ordered 3500 Latitude 7410(Gov Contract), 41% of them had problems out of the box. Dell has a real QC issue and I've seen this with the XPS's i've ordered my self. I got a 9560 that had no issues had it for two year worked great. Had got the new XPS 15(9500) and it had the track pad issue, REALLY bad black light bleed and the 'A' key didn't work. I had dell overnight me a replacement and that one had the track pad issue also and had a problem with the graphic card. So Dell overnighted me another one and it had REALLY bad black light bleed and the track pad issue. I finally returned it and ended up buying a Razer Blade 15 no issues over two years of having it. It also games so much better then the XPS would have.

    My XPS17 9710 with core i7 and RTX 3050 arrived a few days ago. I personally dislike tap-clicking, so I deliberately disabled it as well as right-clicking in Settings. Unfortunately my clicks on the bottom-right corner of the trackpad are not being registered. At first I thought this may be a design choice, but I am now quite convinced that it is a widespread XPS 17 defect.

    I got the XPS 15 9500 for abt a year now and it's a solid and well porforming laptop. It's just the trackpad, that doesn't scream quality (but I mostly just use a BT mouse and keyboard anyway). But then when you close the laptop the top part is slightly bend which didn't cause any troubles SO FAR but I'm scared ofc.

    We purchased Dell Precision 5520 in 2017 and within an year it had multiple hardware issues and it got replaced my 5530 and that also faced a lot of hardware and heating issues. Then dell replaced it with Dell Precision 5750 which is 17 inches 2020 model. We are still struggling with that since it has quality issues. Over saturated screen, heating issues, trackpad not working and when we run diagnostics no issue came and after a restart it started working again so very unreliable. Plus a laptop means mobile computer but here you always have to hook up the charger for performance especially in motion graphics and video editing. But M1 Mac’s doesn’t have these issues at all so wait for sometime and M1X Macs will rule the laptop industry.

    For the 5 years I haven't had any issues you have had. I had a rough start with trackpad working only in BIOS. after receiving a replacement trackpad, I found that cable just wasn't plugged all the way..
    The other problem was them pushing faulty BIOS update. I updated before they realized and removed it, and in the end I can't update or roll it back anymore; and lost quick wake from sleep.

    I have the 9700 from last year. 1080P Screen with the RTX2060. My issues are battery life, and a trackpad that has poor palm rejection and unresponsiveness. I feel for the size and the 1080p Screen it should be stellar. but its just so so. 4-5 hrs. of light use. In 2021 I need 8+ hrs. Honestly I need 12+ hrs. I'm looking at the new MacBook's and will probably switch just for battery life.
    I LOVE the form factor and screen size but battery life is a necessity.

    great video - though it seems the XPS line ever since 9550 has just been plagued with horrible QC (hardware and software). Laughably the 9570 apparently BIOS disabled the GPU or was it that it took very hot temps to actually activate it... and took a year for Dell to admit and fix it. That just puts me off. I'll stick with my MBP 16 M1, or any Mac for $$$$ price point.

Then I sold that when I bought the 2021 15" and boom, trackpad ended up sucking. So I sent it back and ordered one more. Let's hope and pray this new one doesn't have any issues. I 100% agree with NOT upgrading the SSD or the RAM through Dell b/c it's very expensive and it is usually not the latest and greatest. Besides a brief tour of our first Gateway computer (think cows) back in the late '90s, I've only had Dell's and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Dell Precision T7820 because it is a BEAST when it comes to video editing. I did run into a major issue last year and Dell really didn't step up to the plate to solve my issue and ensure I would be a "Dell customer for life." My issue was I lost one of my hard drives when Dell tried to do its updates, and it cost me about $3K to send the hard drive off to a data recovery center. But I was able to get about 80% of the stuff I didn't want off of it, and about 15% of the stuff I did need off of it. I still DO NOT do any of the Dell updates b/c they scare the heck out of me now.

    When you were discussing the trackpad issues, you mentioned how in the bottom left-hand corner you get too close to the corner and the click doesn't happen
    That's on purpose. I found this on the Dell forums from the XPS 17 Setup PDF:
    NOTE: The top and the sides of the touchpad-8.20 mm (0.32 in.) from the edges-are disabled. This prevents
    unintended movements of the mouse pointer when using the keyboard.
    NOTE: The touchpad area of the computer is large and your palms may inadvertently touch the touchpad corners when
    the touchpad is in use. To prevent this, touches within the 1 cm (0.39 in.) x 1 cm (0.39 in.) corners of the touchpad are
    ignored if other touches are detected in the touchpad outside of these corners.
