WE BROKE A RUDDER - Great Loop #9 - Sailing Life on Jupiter EP88

  • We are making miles along the Erie Canal, as we reach half way. We ascend one of the highest locks In North America. Explore the beautiful town of "Little Falls". Jamie discusses cruising revs and fuel consumption.
And never a dull moment …we pop a rudder on a submerged log. Lucky we have a great design and are under way again within a couple of minutes.

    ABOUT US:
Jupiter² was built in the Philippines by an Australian designer for Jamie. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time.
Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing".

that far north if you are in the countryside as you are, the days get hot but the nights are always cool....we call it good sleeping weather, mid summer there is usually a week or two of warm nights. In the big cities the ambient heat keeps us much warmer during most of the summer nights. Montreal here

The breakaway rudder system you have is perfect and probably the main reason you don't see more cruisers in the canal system.... having to get hauled out to repair a broken rudder because you hit something submerged would be a royal PITA. Great video. I really like the rudder system. What do the Neel's have painted on them? "Just makes sense" Mumby rudder system? Yep. (Wonder if I can ask for that on my Seawind?)
Locks? Three Gorges Dam in China, Five locks, 180m height change, takes a few hours. They're huge deep tubs that fill with diesel exhaust. Been through them twice 1999 (shallow) 2009 (dam in full operation) . Probably too dizzy from the fumes to remember all the details. The 'lake' above the dam to Chong Ching is bucket of coal and diesel exhaust- like breathing sand paper. I recommend against it. In '99 before the dam filled up we got to see the old river, our cruise boat fought the currents.

The highest lock on a section is called the Summit.
Depth is always a problem on inland waterways and it only takes a shopping trolly Bike or a car or dingy to sink and any projections will suffer ...the rigging doctors behind you and keeps grounding his 6ft blue water fixed keel. Hes running electric... But has blown his portable generator .
Best system is diesel generator and Electric motors buffered by a battery.. with solar power and regen under sail.🤔 That way the ICE motor only has to run at its optimum speed and can shut off for hours on end for stealth running.

Theres a bunch of divers that go round the US looking for missing vehicles and sadly their drivers that have gone into lakes and rivers. US police forces dont have the resources to search and recover such cold cases.
As for smaller canals you should see what the magnet fishers haul out of Dutch canals and in the US its often guns.😬
