One of the things I loved in 6th edition Warhammer Fantasy Battle was the narrative themed lists in the back of the various army books. But can you build something similar in Warhammer The Old World? We know the flavour pamphlets contain some alternative lists, but what can you do with the Ravening Hordes and Forces of Fantasy books?

Moot and stirland.... thinking of a past army that someone had.

From what I've heard, the Arcane Journals have these Narrative, Fluffy army lists.

That's what I've seen as well from the previews, but I wondered if we could get a jump on things and start making some narrative lists before we get a flavour pamphlet for an army. Turns out... Yes!

Do like your idea for a fanatical Sigmarite army, units of crazed flagellants throwing themselves upon the heretical foe, Warrior priests hopefully being able to join the unit(s) bolstering their abilities. Feel a purchasing urge coming on!

That new Age of Sigmar witch hunter model they previewed last night may have sealed the deal for me!

My current urge is to try and make an army based on a William King (I think) short story where a Chaos Champion leads a bunch of beastmen to ravage a village & it turns out she's (a shock - it was the 90s!) an abused girl from the village who sought out an outlet for her rage & Khorne answered. Probably a Beastmen army with Warriors of Chaos allies to get the proportions right as suggested in the story.

That was one of the early Gotrek and Felix stories, because her daughter was a character in it as well and ended up being a major character in some of the later novels. If you're interested that story is now in the first book - Trollslayer - where they collated all of Bill King's original Gotrek and Felix stories.

lol @ the Samuel Johnson thumbnail. I'm pretty excited that GW has taken this new, free-form approach to list building. It's working well in 40k 10th edition, and now I think it will be excellent in TOW.

I'm doing my Dwarf army based around Longbeards with the whole army being older extremely grumpy and unbelievably conservative, hence no blackpowder weapons at all. I have a stone thrower, 2x bolt throwers and 2 x 10 of crossbowmen in the list, otherwise it's just he Longbeards, 2x unit of Warriors and either a unit of Ironbreakers or Slayers. I'm using the 6th ed metal models with the older plastic warriors (including some 80s plastics too!) mixed in with older miniatures from the 90s and some from the 80s. It's kind of like the War of the Beard list, but just themed around a very conservative Dwarf king and his trusty Longbeards. I would like to have another unit of the Longbeards, but I only have 20x of the stunning 6th ed metal ones for now, sculpted by the legendary Colin Dixon who sadly just passed away, my all time favourite unit of miniatures!

I am desperately hoping they do a made to order of those Longbeards because they are some of the best dwarf models ever.

@@90percentgeek Indeed, although sadly I couldn't buy now as I blew my hobby budget for years with that Dwarf army, a Tomb Kings army of just models from the original 2003 range, a small Vampire Counts army of 5th ed models and some 6th ed Empire. Then again those will keep me occupied for years! In any case I'm glad to see more classic miniatures manufactured as they will be in the market in the future even if I can’t get them from GW now.

As a fluffy player, what has me excited is the ability to take allies / mercs and its seemingly lax restrictions. I was allways a big fan of Azhag the Slaughterer, but thought his rules in recent editions didn't do him justice; he was ment to be a Necromancer in the lore, and the TT didn't reflect that at all. Now I can take a Warboss, give him the Wizard Hat ( which is just the Crown of Sorcery under a different name ) with the Lore of Necromancy or Lore of Vampires and ally some undead units into my army. Bam: Azhag, just as he was depicted at the Battle of Butcher's Hill.
Similarly, back in the day I was a huge fan of 'Hell Pit' , which was Clan Moulder's army list during Storm of Chaos. They had access to a bunch of Skaven-themed variants of (mostly) Chaos units, like Trolls, Spawn, Marauders, Hounds -etc- Thanks to the ally system I should be able to revive my own Moulder list again.
Similarly, I allways had an eye on the 'Dark Pact' which was the alliance Morathi struck with the tribes of the Hung around the same time. So back then you had access to this army list that was a mix between Dark Elf and Chaos / Slaaneshi units. It was metal as hell.

Those are some absolutely banging ideas! I wonder if they will re-release either of the Azhag models, even if just as a warboss on wyvern?

@@90percentgeek Rumour mongers claim GW is going to release a plastic Wyvern kit that can be built as either a boss or shaman. Eitherway, I still would love to see Azhag's mini return. It was a beautiful sculpt that hasn't aged a day. Gorbad and Skarsnik aswell. Great models all around.

im planning on using the 6th ed army of the cairns list starring Kemmler - from what I have seen it should fit fairly well into tomb kings (or vampires, but not seen the rules yet)

    • @90percentgeek
      @90percentgeek  Před 6 měsíci

I honestly think the vampires PDF might be the one I am most excited for. Undead was my original army and I already plan on building half the tomb kings box in a generic way to go in my undead army.
