EPISODE 82.
In this episode, we focus on the fitting, shaping and polishing of the cast bronze Hanging Knees. We cast the last Floor, and production is speeding up in the foundry, with an average of two pieces being made every day!
Meanwhile, Matt makes THOUSANDS of copper rivets for fastening the hull planking, and Pete fastens more floors into place - taking advantage of different fastening techniques in the areas where bolts cannot be used.
Rowan returns to the project, and tries - unsuccessfully - to finally make friends with Pancho.

Leo...I will tell you why this channel exploded, why you are getting the support, and why you have the attention of so many here. I will say it because you don't.
You are a humble man with a great vision, and an incredibly skilled boat builder. You give others the credit for their work, you teach those who want to learn, and you are saving our maritime history. Tally Ho draws people like you.
I've been watching for a couple years now. I never miss a video but rarely comment, Your closeout of this video moved me to speak up.I am always amazed at the people that are drawn to you. That speaks volumes about who you are. I am not in a position to support you any other way than watching and subscribing and sharing the channel with friends.
I can see the finished interior, all the brightwork contrasted by the polished bronze...she is going to be a stunner, and worth every drop of sweat and every cent you put into her.
All the best...keep after it.
Wonderfully said !
Absolutely agree 100%, incredible team made up of remarkable people, hats off to you all! 👏👍😀
Yes, what he said!
The worse part of a Sampson boat video is when it ends. These vids are like nautical crack. Thanks for brightening my day bro!
the man's like crack! like nautical crack!
One of my most favorite shows too :-)
Tempted to sabotage the project so Leo has to continue building and entertaining us indefinitely. However, nothing would make me sadder than to see Tallyho fail to hit the water as soon as possible with Leo proudly at the helm and all the work crew enjoying the maiden voyage. Thank you Leo and crew.
This nautical crack is rather moreish
But when she is finished she becomes alive and joins Her Lover, the Sea!!
I love that the polishing started as a bit of a joke, and then became the standard.
I'm still in awe of the rivet machine. Jeff did an incredible job on it, whoever he's working for is super lucky.
How much faster now? Used to be 22 seconds per rivet!
I have 87 subscriptions. This one is literally the only one I count the days until the next one. Entertaining, educational and well produced.
Likewise here
Me too, the videos arrive at midnight Bangkok time, I wait for them.
John de Wit Me too, John.
Yes sir right on the money and a super parrot to boot.👍

👍👌👏😂😁 LOL That's a good one!
Best regards, luck and health.
Not just any Bronze boat, a really really shiny bronze boat.

The generosity of your landlords, astounds me. A big thank you to them from me, love the way the work is going.
I thought for a moment Leo said "bronze-pouring fetish" in the intro. Which made total sense.

Leo, I am a French man of 61 YO, there is one thing that I wish to tell you, out of the fact that your project, your skills and your dévotion are absolutely amaising, it's that you restore hope in a desesperate world
The longer I watch, the more I realize this project is still only just beginning. Fitting the interior, building spars, acquiring sails, decking, planking, winches, block and tackle, , not to mention the plumbing and electrical systems. I can't wait to see her sail, but it's good to know there will be more Sampson Boat Co content and many more chances to contribute to the project.
Going back to the first episode though, the progress is incredible, once he's got the planking back on she will be much as she started, only with solid timbers and polished bronze instead of rotting wood and rusting iron.
2 more years
@@Samuel-li9nk OOf! I hope the home owners are cool with that schedule! hahaha
Always a big feeling of excitement when I get my patreon email letting me know there’s another tally ho video. Everyone else gets kicked off the tv so dad can watch. My seven year old today said “ they’re still building that ship daddy! How long will it take?” My response was of course “ two years”. Fair winds Leo and crew.
Lol yea same here. My son literally just said to me "Is that the boat building guy, is he almost done". I just look at him and smile.
On the other side of the pond, Nik and Rich are still building Binky, something like seven years into a six-month project :)
...that way when the boat is launched, it is two years ahead of schedule!
:'(
2 years brother... correct..
Pancakes, coffee, and Tally Ho: perfect Saturday morning.
Sounds like a perfect mornin
Sounds like a late morning
Sounds a lot like my morning.
Same, but substitute pancakes with breakfast tacos (bacon and egg). 😋
Works any time of the day!
Sorry for my english. But I love such a tremendous work, you all are doing. It's a jewell, not a boat, what you are restoring. I'm from Argentina, and love boat building, but never imagin that could take such a work, with so much squills and love for your task. I, admire you all. And love every day of that bunch of good people and friends, working. Thank you very much, love everyone of this videos.
Hi, Leonardo! What a nice Comment! :-)
Leonardo, well said ..tm
If it matters, I've seen adults that have lived in the United States their whole lives with less of a grasp on the english language. What you said was clear enough it needs no apology. I think you meant skill rather than squill.
@@alexhamon9261 jajajajaj yes you are right.
Rowan. Find out the parrot's favorite snack. Keep some in a pocket and every time you cross paths with it, give him one. Eventually he will make the connection that Rowan = treat, and he will be more accepting of you. It will take time, but usually works.
Another method of indicating high spots on those bronze floors needing to be taken down would be to slip a 8" X 2" strip of medium sand paper between the rib and bronze floor, sand paper facing the bronze. Then pull the sand paper back and forth to put abrasion marks on the high spots of the bronze. Then you grind down the high spots. That approach seems it might be more effective and faster than using a metal ruler and marking the opposite side. I hope the suggestion isn't to late. Best wishes.
That's a very good idea !
That sounds like a very good idea and the way to do it. My wife says they do something similar in dentistry.
@@davefoc Hopefully not on my teeth. I grind them enough as it is!
I do loads of blind wood fitting in my shop. For hard surfaces like metal to wood, I use lipstick or oil based paint. Also I frequently use non oil pastels. Get a color impression and only remove the color.
@@michaelmagee6428 I've used that technique for cutting holes in dry wall. There are better ways though for drywall cut marking, it's just that that was the way I knew when I did it.
I would probably watch 120 hours of grinding
21:22 the increasing pitch of each subsequent hammer hit is very satisfying
it's like you're building a great cathedral
Watching this project is chicken soup for my soul.
Felt a disturbance in the force and lo and behold Leo dropped another video.
If leo made a second channel with 'more boring' content like grinding I think he'd be surprised how many of us would watch it.
Probably not the first comment saying so, and this one will probably disappear amongst all the others, but I HAVE to say - all that bronze looks incredible. Setting standards like these all the way through the project means Tally Ho is going to look like - and be - a spectacular boat and better than new ❤️
Given how expensive bronze is it better look incredible 😅
Who knew 29:42secs could pass so quickly! The 14 day countdown starts now 👍
I am always blown away by the huge amount of work that is being put into this project Leo. If I were younger, I would definitely have made the trip out there to help you with this amazing endeavor. However, I do feel like I have somewhat helped out by making two donations to help you along. I strongly urge anyone reading this to do the same in order to help Leo bring Tally Ho back to sailing the Oceans where she belongs! 👍👍😉😉
Idea: I’m sure there will be a party to celebrate the launch of TallyHo. There will be many people who will want to see tally ho being launched so have one of your neighbors who owns an area of land near your boat yard and have them open up the field for people who want to come and camp there. I imagine a Glastonbury type scene. The multitudes will come from wide and far. Singing and dancing. Pigs being roasted on spits. One large bonfire in the middle. It would be something for all to look forward to and a fitting send off for Tally Ho, Leo and the crew.
I worked on a boat (metal) for about a month, mostly grinding. Hat's off to all of you for keeping at it and not running away screaming.
Leo’s hair has been learning rapidly and becomes self-aware at 12:48 p.m., EDT on October 3, 2020.
Update: A covert government satellite known as Hairnet has been monitoring Leo’s hair since birth. The hope is Leo’s hair will not turn against its creator. God save the boat.
oh god its already 19:38. The hair is outside my door, its trying to claw its way through the walls and windows. Remember me.
In the panic, Leo tries to cut his hair.
🤣🤣 wait... 😱 ... but is it evil? Or will it come up to solve world hunger and climate change?
It must take hours to get that just so.
I've heard the Russians were working on a sentient beard and the Americans a moustache.
I contribute because I like sailing, old wooden boats, good craftsmanship and Leo's hair.
Indeed, it’s mainly the craftsmanship, old and new, that does it for me. I really don’t even “like” the ocean!!!..
Yea that hair looks like something off the 80s cartoon Thunder Cats

I love these videos. The quality of the production, the documentation, the information and commentary are truely next level. You are creating a double legacy here. One being the resurrection of a beautiful timber sailing yacht to a standard beyond when she was first launched. And second, this detailed documentation of how it was done.
Just brilliant. Keep it up. We will all be with you all the way.
From boat builder and sailor now anew qualification jeweler. Those bronze knees and floors look amazingly like fine pieces of jewelry done by Tiffany masters.
Those hand polished pieces will be the talk on board Tally Ho for at least the next century. Everyone on board will either know of or know the story of the hard work and love that went into doing something right. That’s inspiration.
Craft, skill, dedication, tenacity, humility, humor, patience, generosity, intelligence, maths, (and on and on). Really though, artistry. Thank you Leo! (and company). "...it will be the first time I cut into the 'Tally Ho' " Well done sister!
Oh, oh, oh... music appreciation!
Pancho has to be the quietest parrot I've ever encountered. Great job Leo and crew, the bronze work is looking fantastic!
Rowan: the calm voice of a perfect bedtimestoryteller.
Reminded again of the genius-built rivet-making machine and just how incredible it truly is! That there are folks out there capable of thinking of that and executing it so beautifully gives me great satisfaction! I'm also wondering who is cooking breakfast lunch and dinner and how all that is being handled. Has a cook been hired? Chekka's elsewhere, unfortunately but the crew still needs to eat! Thanks so much for your channel!
IKR, I just madea a post about that rivet machine too ^^.
What pizza places deliver there. It would be funny and useful if pizza showed up at the yard from anonymouses, ordered by phone from a galaxy far away.....
...
The guy who built the rivet die and press deserves a patent.
Cecca!
Eggs. They eat a lot of eggs I'm thinking.
I think i may cry a little when tally ho sets sail....
In two years time lol
The sailing channel will be legendary. I'm looking forward to it.
No, we'll just start again from the beginning and watch Ep 19.a few more times in between.
the floors and knees are stunning. They'll be well worth the effort. Bronze is such a beautiful material.
It is the force of your will that funds this Leo. From that first shaky video of you inside the abused shell of Tally ho, you've powered all this along. And that includes all the wonderful folks who've helped, are helping, and will help. You're the engine Leo, that got me signed up to patreon.
How is Francesca? We miss her!

I'm sure Leo does as well! Overflowing with virility! hahah
Love the bell sound of that bronze floor as it’s going into the frames.
That was some really neat editing to keep the sound even though the video was sped up!
I always love how the whole crew gets a small camera bit to tell what they're doing. It's important!!! DD
CLEAR COAT THE BRONZE!!
Such a beautiful job of polishing.
It tarnishes in a matter of hours. Clear coat with du pont Imron Polyurethane enamel. It is like a soft plastic coating. Lacquer is traditionally used but it is too brittle. A little secret is to heat the bronze and get rid of any moisture . And paint it Hot. It will stay beautiful for years.
Now my Saturday is complete! 😊
I cannot believe how labour intensive this is. I work as a joiner and thought my stuff was slow and pain staking - nothing on Tally Ho scale though.

Wow, those Knees and Floors are spectacular. A lot more expensive, but you'll end up forgetting about the price in the years to come, and just marvel when looking at them. Mike from Australia.
Looking at these knees and floors I would only accept the findest veneer and leather for the the interior. As I said earlier, this boat is a piece of art.
It is an honour to be able to contribute to this amazing project Leo.
I think we Americans just watch to hear you say “Tally Ho.” Well, and to see Pancho dance. Haha! Actually, I find the whole process fascinating. Those floors and knees are gorgeous.
Leo, in response to your closing thoughts: we are the lucky ones for getting to accompany you on this fantastic restoration journey and we are grateful for your team's hard work, dedication and attention to detail.
Beautiful workmanship. She’ll be worth millions and a work of art when completed
Cant wait to see this beautiful boat finished. It has come such a long ways since I moved it up from Oregon. I hope I can be involved in the day it goes to the water.
That will be an event and a sight to see, won't it?
Actually, I'm enjoying the build so much that I'm not really looking forward to launch day !
I hope by then there are other good boat builders on YT that can satisfy my craving for high quality workmanship !
It's so good to see so many people pulling together to make this happen and getting it done !

@@sailingsolar Yes, it was quite the job getting it up from Oregon and then into the driveway where its at. The boat is going to weigh a lot more then it did when I brought it up so its going to be a little bit of a challenge getting the proper trailer under her to go to port townsend. It will prob be too heavy for the hyd trailer I used to bring her in....
Those cast parts are so beautiful. I can imagine Tally Ho never had such beautiful parts in her. One of the pictures show a number of them polished perfectly and basking in the sun. As if made of gold!
The bronze is all but finished. A huge step in the construction. Lots of work accomplished.
It's taken me 3 days to watch all of the episodes until now. Man I would love to take a break from doing my job and give you a hand for a few weeks.
Amazing to see the detail. Like the little whisks coming off those dumps that Pete was putting burrs on. So many people contributing their time and skill too. 👍 to you all.
Leo when you bring her to Bristol I will be on the Clifton Bridge watching you home just as I watched the SS Great Britain when she returned, good luck to you all stay safe and well.
look at those beautiful brackets, I know one man who will be very envious, Nick from Bad Obsession Motorsport, the king of the automotive bracket! I can't believe how much effort and love is put into each one.
I thought you were going to say, „... she has proved to be a very good grinder“, which I‘m sure you‘ll admit, would have been a classic 😂😂😂You could go the extra mile and clear coat varnish all those brass hangers. That would be mega cool and look wonderful for much much longer 👍👍👍
So much work into something nobody will ever see, just to know its there and done right, my hats of to you!
Hi i will know
The hanging knees will be a very visible feature below decks. I am looking forward to seeing the finish work. This boat will be a singular work of art.
every time I see a new episode in my subs it puts a smile on my face
We watch because of the spectacular craftsmanship and beautifully composed videos. 100% my favourite channel to watch. Fingers crossed I will get to see Tally ho in person one day. Its on my bucket list.
"Authentic TALLY HO rivets for sale! Own the exact rivet that holds this iconic work of art together. Made in the same shop with the same press by the same hands that produced all 3000 rivets that have sailed the world." This needs to be a thing.
Why in gods name would you “thumbs down” any of Leo & friends work on Tally Ho? These craftsmen truly deserve the best for all of their efforts 🙏
I imagine they spent so much time polishing bronze they decided if they ever see it again it will have been too soon.
one of my first thoughts when I saw a few "thumbs down" cannot reason that out?!
I used to be a boilermaker, this may sound crazy but I’d love to be grinding those hanging knees right now 😍
I drank more than a few boilermakers in my time when I was installing telecommunications equipment in Pittsburgh. The first one I had I didn't even order I walked into a bar near where I was working for lunch and when I sat down the bartender put a draft beer and a shot in front of me and then asked what I would like for lunch
gullreefclub gotta love a good boilermaker 😂
@@gullreefclub You must've had a riveting good time in that bar - hope the telecommunications still function in Pittsburgh.
We want this project to keep going too Leo!!!
Thanks for keeping things high and tight and thanks to all who enjoy this channel.
All honest work has dignity. And a job well done brings honor.
Even the lowliest task deserves thanks. What would hold the boat together but its rivets?
Most impressive is the polishing that adds a level of artistic flavor to the project. My mind's eye can only imagine what she will look like in the end, to walk through the galley one day, glancing up to see those beautiful hanging knees. To a person who hadn't seen their genesis they might think, oh well, they just popped out of some factory somewhere, off the shelf, you know. But the actual true craftsmanship is amazing. It's not surprising that "craft" is a synonym for "boat", because of the craft it takes to build one. Impressive.
Not to brag or toot my own horn, but I’m damn proud to support Tally Ho! Mark my words. Before she’s completely finished I WILL make the trip from Georgia to help out. Even if it’s just sweeping the floor. The castings are so beautiful. Really incredible work by the whole team. I’m very impressed. And a really fantastic job to making all of those rivets! What an undertaking! 30 minutes of my favorite boat building channel! Love it!!
Carbon paper to mark high spots works a treat!
That or strips of sand paper to indicating high spots on those bronze floors needing to be taken down. Slip a 8" X 2" strip of medium sand paper between the rib and bronze floor, sand paper facing the bronze. Then pull the sand paper back and forth to put abrasion marks on the high spots of the bronze. Then you grind down the high spots. Careful not to underestimate the interest in grinding and polishing video. I love it and there are other who may enjoy the protracted process from rough form to polished boat jewelry. Makes me want to pull out the brasso and find something to shine up!!
Great craftmanship, also clear why we see it less and less. This ship will be very strong but flexible as well where and when needed. Should be good for another 100+ years!!
An especially nice "Thank You" at the end of this last episode. It must be difficult, in the extreme, to have a novel "Thank You", each time. The videos are well received here.
Leo: no wonder you're thrilled! You show it, and so proud of your team!!!
I owned a Jay Benford 36 foot staysail sloop for years. She was full of cast bronze, inside and out, and I lived to polish!!! Wow!, those castings: those floors, lodging knees, and even those rivets says so much of the amazing teamwork you have. All brought together with glorious humour, pride and respect! An excellent video indeed.
I salute you all !!!! - in bringing much happiness to everyone far and wide!

Shiiiiny! lol I love that you are taking such care with components that essentially won't be visible when Tally Ho is completed. THAT is Craftsmanship!
I have a pretty good idea how many sailors watch your show and just drool at all that polished bronze.
This episode could have been named 'oh glorious grinding'.
I already wondered that Mads hasn’t shown up yet!
It never ceases to amaze me when some humans see something as a liability (pranged thumb) and someone else sees it as an opportunity. Great job mate!
I hope you all start looking forward to starting a school for boat building and repair, anyone who need boat repairs can use your school paying repairs and young people can learn this craftsmanship and the methods of repairing all the wooden boats for years to come God bless you all on this great show tally HO Sailors
Hi Leo.. I started watching at around episode 20 and cannot agree more with the rest of all the followers with regards to the craftsmanship and attention to detail. Sitting in South Africa I hope that I will one day see her docked in Cape Town. Somehow you allow us to be part of her... well done.
As a steadfast land lubber, I have learned bunches! I've been in on a lot of land based and aviator vehicle builds and can say, you can always learn something new....a question good sirs, why not run threads down the entire 'dump shafts' and use those to anchor them to the wood? Just ratchet them puppies in till your arms fall off, you'd never get them out at half the length? Just a suggestion!
I think, not 100% sure, a thread would cut through the wood, severing the grain possibly leading to some weakness as the wood dries and shrinks or moistens and expands, Also would allow a channel for water to soak down into the wood. The dump shafts are very slightly bigger then the hole they are hammered into, once the wood settles after being compress by the dump shaft being knocked in, the wood will expand (relax) and fill the dimples. Gripping like a good’un.
'the 120 hours of grinding footage we could have uploaded'... yeah thats fine, go for it, something to fill the two weeks of waiting with.
stuff it with advertisements, youtube won’t notice if we turn the sound off.
That guy is killing the rivet game. Super productive 👌.
I’ve come to have a feeling Leo. You are lucky but we are lucky to get the education from your endeavor. It makes me feel fond of my teacher ... Leo! It helps that I’m a craftsman and waterman with parrots.... cheers Mate!! Sail over to Hilo and I’ll buy you a pint!
Looking brilliant! Good on Matt making all those rivets, it did not look like a very fun job given how repetitive it must have been.
Gorgeous! The hanging knees are even more beautiful than the floors. Looking forward to the start of planking. Kudos to Leo & Co!
After the bronze is polished, you could spray it with hair spray to seal it so it doesn’t tarnish. It will wash off with soap and water next time you need to buff it up. After that respray
Only thing wrong with these videos is there is only one every two weeks. Wish there was even more!
Must be three years now and, Leo has managed to keep his accent intact. One of his many great achievements.
He did say "gotten" once
Thats cool to be able to say you made all the rivets for Tally Ho.
After all those hours of grinding and polishing a coat of wax will help keep the bronze shiny. Thanks for the videos!
At this stage you should consider setting up a temporary fire sprinkler system for the rest of the build period. It's not that complicated and I would guess you have a fan or two who might have the skills and could help you with it.
Been binge watching after finding this channel. Now I'm caught up. Damnit, better donate to get this project moving
