EPISODE 79.
In this episode I start thinking about the plank fastenings for Tally Ho. Using copper rivets is the strongest and most authentic choice, but they are not available to buy in the size I need. Just as I am trying to work out the smartest way to make the rivets, we receive a mysterious box in the mail, from a fan. Amazingly, someone has custom-fabricated a machine for making copper rivets out of round bar!
We also work on making all the patterns for the hanging knees, which will be cast in Bronze at PT Foundry. Matt and David join the team, and get stuck into grinding bronze, and Rosie gets into her stride laminating the patterns. Backtrack is unamused by the baby chicks.

79. Custom rivet press machine! - Wooden Boat Fastenings (TALLY HO EP79)
My granddaughter (13 yo) was over and saw me watching the video. When she saw Rosie she said, "Girls can do that??? Wow!" So we're going to do a few things in the wood shop today. She had never shown any interest before. Rosie probably doesn't know she was an inspiration for a young girl today.
To the Chap that made the Rivet Machine... Well done sir... That is a very nice piece of fabrication and invention indeed. The community on this channel always blow me out of the water.
The gentleman who provided that hydraulic shaping tool needs to be added to the first ship party cruise list.
Bespoke rivet former; designed, built and shipped for your pleasure. Leo, hard work aside, there is a generous amount of support coming from supporters. It's not luck, but a response to who you are and what you've done. That machine is wonderful.
A big thumbs up to the guy who designed and built the Genius riveting machine, its amazing!. 😊
With all the different tedious detail jobs the team is working on, I bet they have to draw straws or duke it out over who gets to make the rivets!
Luke now all I can see is an all out bar fight style brawl. Hammers and saws are flying, there’s chisels everywhere, the ship saw is on its side. Everyone’s bloodied and bruised and then there’s Poncho, just sitting there at the press as if there’s absolutely nothing wrong. Why? Because Poncho knows nothing but chill.
@@joestoffer8212 I'm not a bird guy, I have a dog. But honestly Poncho makes me want to adopt a tropical bird.
Luke honestly, with the way 2020 has gone so far, I think we could all use a little more Poncho.
@@joestoffer8212 what scares me most (in terms of sailing and cruising) that we have learned from this Pandemic is that you're not even safe on a sailboat from many of the repercussions. I have a few friends that are 'stuck' in various places around the world until this all gets resolved, or we get a vaccine. Still, I'd rather be cruising during all this mess that cooped up in quarantine. C'est La Vie...
Jeff's "Wonder-Rivet-Tool", (you'll wonder how you ever got along without it) is an absolutely brilliant piece of kit. The engineering is so sound and the quality of the end product is off the charts. This could even be used to form Bronze Carriage bolt bodies which would then be threaded as needed. All I can say is I do dearly hope Jeff has filed a patient on this incredible machine, and that the fellows over at Port Townsend come over for a visit to view the end product. Stunning, simply stunning.
No patent needed. Published. There's 6,000 + of us, and counting, as witnesses.
And, Pete; We know what you doing.
Thanks for the explanation & your hard work... everybody's hard work!
@@peterhendry2154 If the device able to receive a patent (in this case doubtful) then one has to be applied for. SCOTUS has rule that "prior art" (things like traceable trade secrets and such) does not trump a patent.
Patents are generally a waste of time and resources unless you have a full time team of lawyers to back up your claim.
Rivet presses like this one are quite a common item. I used one way back in the early 80’s
In a world full of division, one guy just wants to build a boat. Be more like Leo.
Yep, well put.
Pete is a pretty intense guy - his expertise and utter PASSION for the project come through clearly when he's on camera. All the guys make such an amazing team.
The answer to so many people’s question lately has been answered; “Where’s Alix?” Answer: “Washington”
Thought I was seeing things.
Is that Alix? Permanent?
Loved that little Easter egg.
So that's what he's been doing all along. Is he also doing some of the video editings for Leo?
I just finished binging Acorn and giggled when I saw him.
Man, that UPS guy got off easy. If that was me, I would have had to back within seven feet of the ship saw. Old truck driver here ;-). You have an outstanding crew! Rosie is becoming a favorite. Pete is solid gold. Leo, you have an exceptional ability to judge one's character. Cheers!
Backing straight down the roadway is way easier than what they ALL are doing.
As an 'X' CDL driver, I do get your drift.
UPS Freight city driver here. It’s against the rules for us to leave the road in a residential area. Too much risk for damage real or imagined to property. Years ago we could do it but too many people tried getting money for damages to lawns, sprinkler systems, etc. After seeing videos of drivers backing down that drive I’m glad we have that rule. 😂
@@buck9852 All trucker drivers are experts, just ask one, well maybe not me..
Seeing Alix through that window was just like a surprise meeting with a relative you hardly see- I follow both boat building journeys and this just brought them a lot closer for me.
I THOUGHT that's who it was, but wasn't sure. Peaking through the door glass was the main clue, though. I'm in the future, January 2024.
I design IT solutlons for a living, so I appreciate how much work is involved in designing anything. That rivet machine is a work of genius! I’m impressed that he’s made something so simple to use and at 22 seconds per rivet he’s brought a lot of time back to the project!!
Good ole Alix!! Awesome to see him!!!!
I thought that was him. If they need some more riveting to do, Alexi can have Steve send him a pile of copper and work something out with Leo. ;) Although the heads are a bit different. It'll be nice to see both do a bit of interaction. It seems most people who follow A to A also follow Leo and vise versa.
All that riveter is missing is a small motif stamped into each head.
Ha Ha, was thinking the same thing. Maybe a little S.B.C. =)
Oh yes, it's the little details 👍🏽👌🏽👌🏽 I would say outline of tally ho though ☺️
My thought exactly.
Don't forget though that the head is going to get a pounding when it actually gets riveted into position... would have to be done afterwards.. oh my lord that's a lot of work, even if you had a specially made snug fitting stamp.
A Tally Ho logo and I would buy one to support the project!
When I saw Alex, my mind raced ahead to the days when Tally Ho and Arabella are both finished and sailing the oceans. They meet up and sail together. Videos of it are on youtube and we all binge watch these great builders and adventurers full fill all our dreams.
Good Morning All, I have just had my second dose of Tally Ho Ep79, just amazing the intricate templates for the bronze hangers, such a lot of work. America gets bad press sometimes, I think because of the somewhat toxic political system, but the quality of Americans drawn to this project is impressive and heartening to see. I think of course of The Pink Fireman, and Jeff who has fabricated the rivet maker, and many others well done to all of you.
Loved the cameo this project isn’t just the boat building. The videos are getting better and better.
They have a pro working for them now as volunteer I believe!
I kinda miss Leo's "Hey, Pete, what are you doing?", to me it somehow became such an important part of the series 😔
Totally! I liked his controlled irritation.
It should be a shirt!!!
Nooope! It was tired and over done. For me.
@@ramosel I'd buy one!
Yepp, absolutely miss this running gag. It always drew smile on my face.
"See a Need, Fill a need" - Bigweld. I am so amazed at the tools that have been created or modified to make the job easier. By the time Tally Ho is in the water, Leo will have a fully functioning boat shop. Can't wait to see where that creative energy goes.
Thanks Leo and crew for keeping us in this most positive vibe through a challenging time in the world .
Isn't it marvellous how we humans so easily respond to a worthwhile joint task .
The vibe you ,TallyHo, and friends have created has inspired so much positivity , generosity of spirit , ingenuity , depth of experience , skills etc etc ...revealing these most wonderful aspects of us as humans .
I could go on ................and I will because I am inspired.
A boat like this is a true work of art and you are revealing mastery in the process .
The level of intricacy of the project - as you have taken it on is astounding . It is a massive project . Your work rate/ethic is so effective and equal to your intelligent approach in timelessness - (whilst obviously there are timelines , you show us there is no sense of rushing through and cutting corners . i mean - every aspect of the work has soooo much detail and work effort and we get to see the essence of that . it is mindblowing ! Great film-making !)
Energetically the project is like a big positive snowball gathering and releasing energies as it flows . The timeliness of the people , skills , materials and tools, manifesting because someone was inspired to throw their shoulder in behind the snowball shows us all that anything is possible when we dream large and include everyone in the dream .
Amazingly skillful volunteers turn up to offer what they have . So much grunt is needed to accomplish the myriad tasks .
Marvellous spirit of generosity is here for us to see eh!? Jeff's riveting machine , magnifico : )
Imagine the world being just like this project . Imagine !
And as the project flows , timelessly , soon floating in the sea and sailing like a witch ,
You and friends get to live and sail on this flowing creation with an endless potential global crew list , a generator of positive vibrations resounding through existence .
Cheers Leo ,
For reminding us all ; This is how we humans are meant to live - united in joint , fun ,beneficial projects . It's meant to be fun :)
Its great to see Alix is doing well and having fun, we missed you over at Arabella's ;-)
I'm sure he will be back to A2A. . I think his batteries are almost full now. Nice of him to drop in and say hello.
if he grinds out 5000 rivets while he’s visiting he could borrow the machine ;-)
Was very surprised to see Alex creeping through that window.
I had to do a double take on that window peak.
I kind of gave up watching A2A, why is alix longer there?
Its easy to see the beauty in the fairing Pete is doing. But how incredible is the beauty in EVERY SMALL DETAIL?!? Simply astounding Leo and team
I was thinking the same thing
actually what we are seeing is how incredible his video team has become to show us all that!
When I saw the rivet making machine my first thought was, "The Arabella Team are gonna be jealous!" And right on queue, Alix shows up in the window :-) If you need help pulling that handle for 24 hours just let me know!
Jeff, I was a machinist for almost 50 years. You rock guy, nice job.
Man ... I wish that ram-rod press had a signature die "Tally Ho" so every rivet was the namesake of the boat.
It really struck me during this episode that a boat is just as much of a sculpture as it is a vehicle or a tool.
That rivet machine is some brilliant thinking to make it that simple. I'm a machinist and fabricator with over 40 years experience and that impressed me. Job well done. Jeff
Just wanted to give a shout out to the new video editing style and camera man. It suits the project and channel very well. Video length also perfect, love it. Also the region block was fixed, I’m watching this from Denmark just fine now.
I never knew I wanted to know this much about boat building. But man if this isn’t one of my favorite channels on CZcams
Coming along nicely Leo! That riveting machine is off the charts amazing. Kudos to Jeff for putting that together. Looks like I will have to make another donation to the cause considering the cost of those Copper rods........... Cheers Leo & Crew........ 👍👍😉😉
DONATION MADE! Come on and join me folks & together we can help Leo rebuild Tally Ho!!
Quite a shock to see Alix pop up on here, obviously I'm watching both boat builds like virtually everyone else here; the one with the parrot and the one with the dog. The similarities go beyond merely both channels making a boat, for me the overwhelming similarity is that both channels are full of good people.
It's a great bonus to see Alix, but no line of "Pete, What are you doing?" Oh, Leo! You may think it's getting too old, but please! We miss that a lot!
Came here on episode 1 for information, now here on episode 79 filled with inspiration. I've just started a project to rescue and restore a near 100 year old British lifeboat, "The Brothers" ON671 will be making her way back home to Cornwall next month. SaveTheBrothers.org
Thank you for the amazing videos.
every 14 days i wait for a new video and every time i get a feeling of respect, astonishment and surprise. I am greatfull for all there is achieved togeteher.
I could watch that machine working for hours. It’s kind of hypnotic.
One could almost call it... riveting
73 downvotes? Obviously those people are heathens.
Another fantastic episode Leo. That riveting machine is a fine bit of kit. Well done Jeff.
Riveting episode!
Thanks Leo!
And thanks Jeff!
The engineering on the rivet press is awesome. Good to see Alix.
So cool to see Alix’s cameo at the end of this episode!
Very impressed with the health and safety tips you were giving the newcomers.
So many places either don't care about it or just assume the newbies already know those things.
That rivet press is a thing of beauty.
It's going to save *weeks* of effort making the rivets for Tally Ho.
I'd say the guy should sell them, but "rivet maker for wooden boat" is a pretty niche market, LOL.
Does anyone know how to contact Jeff about a press like this?
Every step of this project is so wonderful to watch. Thanks for doing this massive undertaking Leo. Can't wait to see her cutting the water.
Leo when putting bondo in internal corners load it up then cover with cling film and use a pipe of your chosingand squeeze it in and leave till gone of and a perfect concave internal corner with little sanding Mick UK.
good tip, I'll use it myself.
This is a great tip!
I had to smile a little bit each time I saw the one newb working on the bronze floors after he'd commented in his intro that he'd come to brush up on his woodworking skills. Hope he takes the time to realize that even the skills he learns working on the bronzes will apply to his woodworking.
This is “Zen” and the Art of Boat Building
I bet Robert Pirsig would have loved this project!
Dude, Jeff totally kicked Ass on that rivet press please let him know that he F/A has Mad Skills, hmm I guess birds of a feather do flock together. Your a Bad Ass Dude (BAD) Leo and you leading your crew in building this boat is awesome. Thumbs up to the Masters at work you all ROCK!
LEO!!!!! Kudos to you. It is just amazing how much good change the channel has undergone in the past three years under your leadership.. That was certainly a very young looking LEO who rescued Tally Ho. in the summer of 2017. Additionally the progress on Tally is mind boggling. Looking through the hull seeing all those beautifully curved ribs is just incredible. You should seriously consider auctioning off the molds for the hanging knees at an appropriate time. I am SURE it will contribute positively to your balance sheet. KUDOS to you for all the mentoring you engage in. The more you mentor the less you personally work. I guess that is the cost of mentoring. Keep the faith! Tally Ho will be beautiful again.
This boat is going to built SO much better than the original. I refuse to believe this amount of attention to detail was applied in the original build
Leo and Pete are good Mentors. Anyone that goes and works on Tally Ho will learn alot.
LEO "What yo doin Pete"
PETE "Bein a good Mentor".
Rosie is also turning into a bit of a star.
@@mausplan3890 i want Cecca to come back
I just realized how bittersweet these videos are. I am so excited to see tally ho launched and sailing away and at the same time I know I don’t want this project to end because the videos are so good!
That riveting machine is genius
I could spend many happy hours making those.
Exciting to see Rosie. One of my favorite things about Leo is that if you want to work hard and grow and learn he supports that wholeheartedly. I don't know about the UK, but in the US it's pretty damn hard for a woman to get a good break in the trades. Which brings me to Rosie. She's a hard worker and she wants to learn. Leo supports that. That makes me pretty frickin' joyous.
@Ted Carruthers Hardly Free for him. as you can see, he has to teach every volunteer to get them up to speed. he has to do this with every one of them. the man has the patience of a saint.
So if they put Rosie on the crazy new rivet machine that would make her Rosie the Riveter!
She has skilz AND a beautiful singing voice!
I think we need a coffee with Pete video, questions and answers. Lol
yeah, i want to hear all about his dog!
Coffee with Pete, that sounds amazing.
Not gonna lie... when Pete first showed up, I thought, "really??". Today I spent 90% of the vid wondering where Pete was (and kinda missing him)... even after Alix's cameo! 😊
I was glad to see him but still a little disappointed that we didn't hear "Hey, Pete...what are you doing?"
@Jack Hole people look and dress a certain way to get a certain reaction. You can pretend you don't, but you'd be lying. Pete dresses in a way that says careless hobo activist kid. Of course we don't know that about him, so nobody ACTS on their initial impressions, but we still think what they want us to think about them.
@Jack Hole because, sadly, we all judge all the time. I guess it's instinct. So, perhaps, it should go like this, "Hey Pete, what you doing?"
"Teaching y'all a valuable life lesson!" 😊
@@Wmoore1 nice assumptions you've got there...
@@wildtimbrown you're completely innocent of judgement? You literally just cast a judgement on me based on what I've said. We all make assumptions, you're not a saint.
Wow very awesome....as a pro woodworker for 42 years i find this work fascinating....i will be following this . in fact if i was younger i would so much love to be part of this project!!
Big WOW to guy that made your rivet machine . He could sell the hell out of them world wide .
Better patient that pronto
As a father I have to point out that when an apprentice for my GM wood modelmaking trade, had someone in management caught me cutting a piece of wood on a tool while wearing gloves I would have been officially reprimanded. This video opened with the gal cutting a narrow piece off a board while wearing gloves and the larger toothed bandsaw would have loved to snag her glove and pull her hand into it's path.
Craftsmanship at the finest. Wonderful people helping with such skill. A work of fine art. I love seeing her come together.
Comes to do carpentry, ends up grinding silicon-bronze. I love Leo's sense of humour! : )
That machine is outstanding, a great effort by the designer / builder.
Hats off to pattern makers and tool makers. I hold those folks in awe.
Anyone else wishing someone was there to be his camera person and assistant editor to allow him time to work but have more videos? I feel awful saying that but I catch myself looking for videos then saying "Idiot it's not time yet." 😂😂 How did boat building become such an addiction?
leo does have a new video editor and team and they are doing a fantastic job, light years ahead of earlier shows
Mister Jeff is this weeks MVP! What an awesome contribution!
Oh my god how much I love this channel
The dude that made rivet press is beyond awesome!!!
For those of you that want a logo in the rivet head: once the rivet is in place, a wooden plug is hammered into the hole in the hull planking to make it smooth. You'll never see the rivet head except when it's formed.
Can you add a Sampson Boat Company die pattern to the press to further customise the rivets? Might be a merch opportunity in that as well.
Nancy Pelosi you not....Nancy Pelosi of (insert place Nancy pelosi comes from, here)...are you? I wouldn’t have thought boat building was your jam!😂
Nancy Pelosi true, it’s pretty epic!
@Jim Nickles For any image or lettering to be readable the rivets have to be set and secured in one single crazy hard blow...
I was thinking the same thing, but to create some additional revenue stream by making/getting a die that could forge coins or?, out of copper or bronze, to be sold to fans of the project with significant margins. The press sure looks robust enough, but we shall see what impact 4,000 rivets has on the machine's longevity.
@Jim Nickles if you ask me, no, don't do that. You're right with by hammering it in, it wil disappear from the head, but the rivets in the boat are on the boat, so nobody will see it anyway. But the customiesed rivets made to be sold in the shop are easily made and show your appreciation to the whole project!
So glad you are not skimping anywhere on the rebuild, this boat is going to be a multi generational boat and it’s future owner in 100yrs time will be thanking you for your forethought.
ship saw, threading machine and now a rivet press; quite the machinery shop you have in the making...
5 minutes ago I was wondering when the next Tally Ho! would be out..... The shots down the inside of the hull are fantastic. Most people have no idea....
What happened to "Hey Pete what you doing?"
grumpywoodiam i was waiting for it too while he stood there, then kinda cut to the chase, maybe that file got corrupted this week, we'll never know 🤣👍🏽
I was waiting for that too lol
I was very disappointed by that too. Now I we'll be left to wonder if Pete is fairing frames or drunk in a 7-11 parking lot for the next two weeks.
Shy Pete loathes the camera, but he's a damn good shipwright!
Pete graduated to "one of the real guys" right down to the emphasis on U.K. punctuation. Beautiful work, Pete the Boat Builder.
I saw Alix Krider's cameo at 22:46 - 22:52, and at 28:58 - 29:09!!! The rivet-forming machine is an absolutely beautiful piece of machine design. The only thing better would be an auto-progressive upsetting and cut-off machine. After what Alix and Steve went through to make and upset the ends of their rivets, I can understand Alix's amazement!!!
I can only echo the existing comments about the rivet forming machine. It's design is imaginative, efficient (I especially love the economy of movement in the press as it cycles through the three finite functions with limited nonfunctional movement) and so professionally built and finished.
Wow~!! Best episode ever?!? Certainly in the top 10-20?! The astonishing complexity of the hanging knees and all the considerations that go into their construction is mind-boggling. Having to consider the casting process and getting them out of the sand... really impressive to watch. The person responsible for the copper-rivet-making machine deserves The Leonardo-DaVinci/Thomas Edison International Award for Brilliance. I mean... c'mon! Seriously! How cool is that!~!?! One thought I had about the Tally Ho Project is that all of the things which have gone into it from the lofting floor to all of the patterns, the ship saw, the patterns for the floors and knees... all that stuff is of immeasurable worth to anyone else in the future who'd want to tackle building another Strange Talley Ho. Surely all these things will be catalogued and stored and moved on through time to the next batch of geniuses maniacal enough to take on such an overwhelming and beautiful endeavor. Kudos to everyone, especially the copper rivet machine designer! Awesome Awesome Awesome!~!! Thanks for your channel.
Once again Pete is busting ass and doing such fine work. I'm amazed at the quality of his work in forming the rabbet. Absolutely beautiful. These young folks are lucky th have such great mentors.
Alix cameo priceless hahahahaha!
I’ll be darned! That was Alix Kreder making a cameo. I thought I was seeing things. Amazing work as always Leo and crew.
Alix! Bravo! Good to see Pete as well. Absolutely love the cast of characters coming through. Thank you Leo, your a legend.
Nice riveting machine well thought out and engineered ,looks like a modified R8 collet, lucky boy, great work
Oh to be young... I'd be heading to Port Townsend. Thanks for all your doing and for the wonderful entertainment you provide viewers.
Leo, man,
love to see all that craftsmanship on this project. And especially most of it on a voluntery basis!
Love to see, how people bring in their knowledge, donate ideas, time and money just to see a,, boat" get wet" again! How I would like to be part of that.....
Alix peeked through the window and thought to himself "that's inkredible".
When it comes to the rivet’s head stamping TH, I believe no need “simple is as simple does”. So far efficiency and determination has been Leo’s strenght. As his crew and tasks increase, so does his attention to his important managerial skills.
I'm a keen follower of Tally Ho right from the start, but it was only after binge viewing all 79 instalments that the sheer magnitude of this undertaking began to dawn on me. What Leo and his volunteers are doing is simply enormous. Their work ethos deserves our deepest admiration. I sincerely hope that the rebuild of Tally Ho will find it's climax in a successful launch in another year or so. Hang tough guys!
Jeff is an absolute legend. The rivets look perfect and they compliment the skills of all the carpentry being done. Well done 👏
Reassuring to see that Pancho is keeping a close eye on the progress! 🤣 as always thanks for sharing your amazing journey and craftsmanship 👍🏻🔥🙏🏻
This is a really great episode! You show a nice variety of work and personalities (and you have a smooth continuity in filming style even though you're using a new videographer). Everything looks to be progressing nicely. Well done! Oh how I wish I could be there. Also, it would be great if Jeff had a video showing the fabrication of the rivet press. Jeff, you did a great job making that machine!
To see copper flow like clay is new to me! Alot of energy and intention and preparation and thought focused right there.
Me also wants to see the fabrication of that press, if available, put it on one of the episode to come!
the video team is outstanding!
Noah, may I suggest that you sell the hanging knees patterns to subscribers both to raise money and to expand the legacy of Tally Ho. The patterns are works of art. Each should be numbered and come with a description of location on the boat. Your talent is incredible.
Leo, you are not a ship builder or sailor
You are a nautical artist

Enjoy 😊 video restoring Tally Ho wooden sailboat ⛵️ Great video ! 😀⛵️😘 Mike from Missouri
Hi Leo, thank you for all of the great videos. I'm a metal fabricator and all too familiar with angle grinders. I noticed that you're using bonded grinding wheels on the bronze castings. I'd like to suggest you try some flap wheels instead, they are usually faster in material removal, more controllable and leave a nicer finish. They're available in many grits and even different grinding and cooling aids for different metals.
Till Koerber I’m a complete amateur and I love those flap wheels - but I find they grind through my wallet faster than anything else!
I would love to watch a 10 minute compilation of outtakes of the parrot, the dog, and the chickens. Am I alone in finding these guys the highlights of the videos? They bring a sense of proportion to the project with their worldly indifference.
Possibly the most heroic thing I’ve ever seen on CZcams.
Heads-up; If you enjoyed the first "easter-egg", you might want to watch this video right until the end...
If this video is unavailable in your country, I apologise. It’s due to a music rights issue (false copyright claim) - blame CZcamss crazy “guilty-until-proven-innocent” approach. It will be sorted, but I don’t know when.

@ Sampson Boat Co. Now if your using copper rivets on the boat does that mean your going to have to use any sacrificial anodes on the boat? Or is that not required since the boat is mainly wood
I know typically anodes are only used on iron hulled ships due to electrolysis

I really appreciate that Leo never begs for likes or subscriptions. I wish everyone else on CZcams would learn from him. It is so tiring to hear people ask me to like their videos. If I like it, I will give it a like. Do a good video like Leo’s and earn the Like. Too many viewers give likes out for mediocrity.
"Hey Pete what you doing" surprised we skipped that part.
