EPISODE 66.
Back to work on Tally Ho! After returning to the West Coast, I start by planing and bolting the beam shelf scarps joints. In the process, I buy a vintage pipe threading machine and use it to thread the bolts.
After a 3500 mile journey across the USA, a Pink Fireman arrives with a trailer-full of White Oak for TALLY HO’s deck beams, which we unload with the help of a forklift and a stubborn parrot. It’s good to be back!

66. East Coast Oak and a Pink Fireman (Tally Ho EP66)
What an honorable man was Marshall. I need to check out that charity. God's speed back home good man.
I made a donation. Men like Marshall are as rare as hens teeth.
Great to see there are still good people out there...
Top bloke! What a legend!
A true gentleman.
@@joebrown1382 Tried 3 times to make C/C donation with no luck. Left a message with their HQ in Maryland and if they call back will try again.
I am 80 and have serious back issues - so I am pretty much stuck indoors. Over the last two years, I have learned to turn off my TV and watch CZcams. I spend between 8 and 12 hours a day, subscribe to many channels and follow some of the best - but Sampson Boat Co is absolutely the top of the list! Leo is one of a kind, both in knowledge, wisdom and talent. And Poncho is also a star, the most entertaining pet of any channel. I have no money to send Leo a gift - but I may send him a comb someday... 😏
Much appreciated Gilbert!
I don't think a comb exists that could tame Leo's barnet :-D
I understand your lifestyle. I’m 70 with COPD and lower back problems too. I can’t do much also and I got into watching CZcams and found many Cruising and Sailing shows for 12/14 hrs. a day.
Just about 3 weeks ago I found Leo, the Tally Ho and all of Leo’s 2 and 4 legged friends and the Parrot of the NorthWest and last but not least the chickens!
I truly wish my health was in good enough shape to come out and help, aid and support Leo and his Dream, maybe in my next life!
That guy Marshall what a lovely man he is and terribly sad what he has been through. People like Marshall make this world a better place blessings to him
I teared up at the end of the episode... Marshall seems like such an amazing person. The world needs more people like Marshall.
God bless Marshal & his wife. I lost my wife to cancer in 2012. I know what it's like. Thank you.
Thank you Marshall for all you've done for cancer victims, and the huge help you've donated to Leo. What a guy....... Cheers!
Marshall is truly a wonderful human being, his soul speaks through his eyes! well done sir!
I met him several years back at Rolling Thunder in the parking lot at RFK Stadium. He’s the sweetest, most honorable man you could ever meet.
Yeah, he looks like a big ol’ sweetheart.
And what a beatiful country he went through to get to Leo
Love the videos. I would love to be able to do some boat building as opposed to the home construction I do now. One question if you don’t mind. How is this endeavor funded. It would seem to be an expensive pursuit and I am curious. Thanks!
Right? What a story he has. Three cheera for the Pink Fireman and For Three Sisters!
In a world that is trembling and crashing.....it does my heart good to see men like Marshall and Leo who are doing what gives me hope.
Amen!
Never cease to be impressed by how nice people are and for the community you are creating.
Man you really lucked out finding such great hosts. A full workshop to yourself and letting you come and go as you please. Donations make the project possible, but without the hosts it would have never even begun.
They must be some top shelf folks
@@andymoss3132 Absolutely.
It’s the area. People care about more than money in that area. It ain’t nyc that’s for sure
Another great episode, Marshall, what a star truly humbling loved his words at the on the board. As always your choice of music fantastic. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing. You are an inspiration my son is a Patreon of yours, just completed his RYA Yacht Masters certification and is of to Greece as a flotilla skipper your content does count and I thank you for your dedication, you'd make an excellent teacher, lecturer.
I hope Leo finds some place in the boat to display Marshall's message. Perhaps turning it into a tabletop or something.
Sailing Holidays flotillas ? Great holidays
Marshal is such a lovely guy, and what an epic trip.
The timing of this video for myself is surreal, today we said goodbye to an amazing woman my sister in-law, who was a very bright star and
Business woman to breast cancer. Thank you Marshall for all your efforts and what a great video.
Absolute Rock Star Marshall, for everything you did and are doing...
Every now and again you come across someone who restores your faith in humanity. You can talk about a person being a one in thousand but I think Marshall needs to be seen as one in a million. To drive across a country to help someone is truly amazing.
Marshall says there was just some weather then shows clips of huge snow storms and many mountain passes. A serious feat with a size-able trailer load. Ha what a legend!
I must assume I'm somehow getting some sawdust in my eyes through my internet connection because episodes like this always makes my eyes water up for some reason...I'm forced to keep tissues nearby for the eyeball run off in my nose....Hey, doesn't happen to me very often since I'm just a harda$$ 70 year old Nam era vet that isn't moved by much.
You truly are an inspiration to many...which is amply shown by the donations of gifts, money and labor....Sadly, I'm also financially challenged... the type whose idea of a retirement fund is to play the lottery...if i ever hit, I promise to send you a BIG chunk!!
Thank you, Leo for showing us that despite any obstacle ....If you dream hard enough and continue to strive forward...you CAN succeed!!!! Also a tip of my hat to Marshall, not only for his donations to you of time and equipment, but for his dedication to saving lives as a firefighter....Your stories and actions give me hope for the future of our Country... despite the political upheavals today.....discussions of which are never appropriate here...even if never far from mind...!
Well said, fella.
Welcome home, and thank you for your service sir.
@@mikeramsay7682 Thanks...
@diver dave Am I the only one moved to tears by this guy???
thank you for your service!
Leo, you are building so much more than a boat.
Anyone who has ever drove across America knows just how incredibly beautiful this country is. Every trip is magic, exciting, and unique!
You know it all makes sense, you get ride of the GPS and soon because of the spirit you nurture and have nurtured the best people are drawn to you!
Marshall really touched my heart, with his sadness and his resolve to put it to good use. He is a true human being and his sisters would be so proud!
Wow, what a guy, a Big Shout out to Marshall for all the great charitable work he does.
🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧❤️
What a great bloke, he embodies everything about the “Good American “ . I wish him well, cheerio mate. Bob from South Australia.
HUGE thumbs up to Marshall for his charity, delivering the wood all the while giving the white oak slabs a nice weathering too by the looks of the trip. 👌🇨🇦
Besides backing up narrow spots with a big trailer like an absolute boss, Marshall is just a pure human being.
What an amazing journey!
Leo, what an excellent community you are creating. My wife and I are considering moving to Portland in the next year. I am former cabinet maker with tons of shop tools and hand tools (SCMI, MINI MAX, Festool etc). I would love to look you up when I get in the area and lend a hand. Let me know what you may need help with.
Nice one Jim
Awesome Jim!
Good man!

Props to Marshall for his help in moving that wood - and for the work in supporting sufferers and their families through breast cancer. 👍👍
The world is better place with people like you, Marshall and your respective supporters in it. Hopefully, your subscribers will be as moved as I was to repay Marshall's selflessness.
What a great human being. My senses tell me that you’ll likely see him again.
The pink fireman what an amazing man
So great to see you back on the work site! Marshall was a treat. I actually think that he expressed quite well how, as one of your supporters, most of us feel. I for one know that I too feel a certain emotional attachment with the Tally Ho project and truly with you too, Leo. Thank you, Chuck Jenkins
Leo ain’t just building a boat,he’s built a shipyard! Very impressive, and shows the true spirit of human kindness is still alive and well in America, and all over the world. The bloke is truly a force of nature, and incredibly knowledgeable at such a youthful age. Keep the hammer down fella!👌🏴 Also,Marshal, what an absolute legend, blown away....huge kindness ,woulda loved to join him on that road trip!
I’m often dumbfounded by how uplifting your videos are. I don’t know what it is, but they always put a smile on my face. Thank you, Leo, and thank you to everyone who helps this project.
Me too, get a real buzz watching Leo work, his scarf joints are amazing, brilliant stuff.
Wow, there are just so many fabulous people on the planet.... very heart warming...
Marshall, it's guys like you that are the backbone of your Nation not all those 'high and mighty' folks in Washington. A big thank you from all us folk in Scotland.
Great to hear the work he is doing to help the fight against breast cancer. Kudos to him and best of luck with the fight. Now your back and it's time to get back to work on Tally Ho. Full steam ahead.
Who would have known building a boat would become such a great story about passions, loss, love, and inspiration.
If ever I'm privileged enough to walk on that deck my first thoughts would be of Marshall and his family and how wonderful people can be. Leo you have a talent for drawing out the best in us all.
Not only do I appreciate the wood working and the boat building, I love the mix of old tools being rebuild and used as well as brand new tools that makes life good.
Leo, you Marshall, and all the volunteers on this project so far have completely restored my faith in humanity, especially encouraged by the younger people.
So inspiring to see people come together like this
My hat's off for the pink fireman for his great work and helping out with the boat....
Well done, Marshall.
This is the true meaning of 'community'. People helping people.
Projects like Tally-Ho are far more than the sum of the parts.
Simply building a boat brings together innumerable people who combine in a spirit of support that truly humbles me as a mere observer.
Tally-Ho is a symbol of achievement and humanity, more than sweat, blood and tears.
Gives me warm fuzzies.
Is there anything more satisfying than seeing a scarf join vanishing as it is clamped to? This episode is a symphony of the mechanical and magical wooden wonder. Intro pinkman!
Words fail me of how impressed I am with Leo’s skill and work ethic and also the selfless contribution of Marshal helps to restore my faith in humanity which has been quite shaken recently. Proud to be a patron and help in a small way. Good to see the pets again too
Leo and Mike Patey in one day!!! It's a great Saturday!
I was thinking the same thing, lol
@@rolandcox5162 ditto. 👍👍👍👍
And a Trent Palmer video. Bonus Saturday!
Same!
Wow - the Pink Fireman! Must admit, brought a tear to my eye in more than one way. A cancer survivor, (head and neck, stage 4), 8 years out cancer free, it was very touching that you are giving yourself to help on the Tally Ho project and help in the battle to fight cancer. I was one of the very fortunate. Thanks
The beauty old school craftsmanship can produce,,,,what a work of art !!!!
Marshall, what a man....... Bravo.
This channel is everything that that is right about the internet. Thanks Marshall and your wife for helping us all by delivering the wood and letting the project we are all so invested in. Continue.
Unlike me to be short of words, but, hearing Marshall's history and all..."WOW"...what a true gentleman. Glad to see you back on Tally-Ho Leo, again, Thank You Marshall and Wife !!
I am in Covid lockdown with my wife just diagnosed with breast cancer. Going back in December 2020 to see the early episodes. Then ran into pinkman. Good man.
You just met one beautiful man and this project keeps giving in fine people.
Good guy Marshall! Nice to see you back Leo. Excited for progress in the future!
.Marshall ROCKSTAR! as the son of a 3 time, breast cancer survivor thank you!
Thumbs up to the pink fire fighter! 👍🏻💪🏻🧑🏻🚒
That super-mega-heavy transport Marshall showed at 22:00 -- Too heavy for words . . .
If you don't watch CZcams videos about this specialty: that 14-wheel tractor with concrete blocks on it and hitched to the back of the main rig is rigged to ASSIST in BRAKING the main rig on downhill. Also can switch and pull from the front for uphill.
You get out in the Rocky Mountains on the Interstate in winter you can find yourself in one big mess and it just keeps pounding you sometimes for more than just one day.
I am retired now but after being out on the vary roads in a semi for about 12 years, that Marshal went over I thank the Lord every day that he was with me and that I don;t do that ever again.
Living in Montana and traveling all of the time, I could recognize just about every spot that the Fireman posted, from the rest areas on the Dakotas to the first views of the Rockys outside of Sheridan, to Homestake and Lookout passes, to Vantage crossing the Columbia. Thanks for the little trip!
Watching you scarf a joint is just SO satisfying... Never ceases to amaze me how it almost just disappeared on both of them!
Marshall, you are legend. Thank you so much!
I think one of the things that has come out of this project is the revelation of volunteers who have turned up from all corners and are individually pretty special people ... in particular the Pink Fireman.
What a guy! There's hope for humanity yet.
Wot a lovely bloke. Only real men can wear pink. And he rocked it! Great to have you both back on the job. Keep going guys.
The kindness of the Pink Fireman brings me to tears.
12 days from pick up to video post! 5 Days travel across the continental US? good job all
At 16:55, when the joint closes up perfectly ... that is awesome!
Welcome back Leo. To see you working is a pleasure. I had a old wood boat, with my dad, and i loved to keep it alive with him. You drive me crazy when you couple two huge pieces of wood and the gap in the between magically disappears, as if the two pieces were born together!
Marshall, is a Hero ! With times like they are now its so hart warming to get to see someone like Marshall, people like Marshall, is what our country is all about. !! God, bless him and thanks to Leo, for his time in making a community that brings out the good in our fellow men and women !
One of the reasons this channel is so great is how many people will help pitch in. That was a big deal what Marshall did and he's just so happy to be a part of the project. I bet Leo has a tough determining what part of this journey brings him more joy; restoring Tally Ho or meeting all these great people that pitch in one way or another. Kind of gives me hope in humanity. I salute all you who have become a part of this project and given me a weekly treat in craftsmanship and serving your fellow man.
Leo you’re amazing. With love from Holland ❤️ I introduced the 3 sisters into my Facebook group healing cancer naturally. Cheers mate!
Leo, you're my hero. Love your attitude, skill and focus.
Fair winds and following seas.
Pehe
Thank you Marshall!
There are good, humble, nice men and women in the world that pass it along. We count you and Mrs Marshall in that group.
Thanks Leo for supporting F3S.org.
Thanks again all!
Marshall is a stand up guy for doing what he did for the benefit of the Tally Ho project & Leo! I can relate to his cause having lost my youngest cousin last year to breast cancer. Keep up the great work Leo & have a safe trip home Marshall. As one of Leo's patreon supporters, I want to personally thank you for what you did! Cheers! 👍👍👍👍
Amazing show case of the beauty of both America and her people. That section through the Black Hills was awesome.
Glad your back Leo!
Too right mate, great country, great people.
Good stuff right here ... Your craftsmanship, the community coming together on this project, and inspirational folks like Marshall. Good on you, mate! Cheers!
Marshall is the kind of man that reminds me that Angels are true, and some of them live among us.
As a one time shipwright, I have to say that the quality of your work is OUTSTANDING.
Surely one of the CZcams engineers would take on the restoration of the threading machine.

Hi good to see you back Leo, I am in awe of Marshal and his generosity what a trip with people like this supporting you should only take two more years great Vlog.
Marshall shows us what true real Americans are made of. Decency, honor, hard work and a smile never far away. Helping others is in his DNA like so many I have met over many years. This extraordinary community being built through Leo's hard labour of love is heartwarming and so very symbolic of the world we want the following generations to embrace.
Brilliant work by everyone involved, history will treat you all very kindly.
Godspeed Marshall and Leo.
Thank you Leo, Checka and Mike for the planner and Marshall for driving the load ❤💪🏻 F..ck cancer 👊🏻

There's a lot of negative stuff said about the internet. Your story is one of great positivity. These positive stories should be spoken of more, else we might destroy the good things with restrictions because of the bad things, however big and bad they might be, or not be?
Welcome back Leo!
Marshall, you're a very special guy and it was a pleasure to meet you in this video. What a treat to be able to travel across the USA and see things you may never have done otherwise.
The best to you and your great work.
I’m from New Zealand where you can drive from the east coast to the west coast in about 4 hours!
I would get island fever.
WOW! I'm always amazed at your woodworking skills, not to mention your attention to detail. I am also blown away with the people that gather around this project, including the Pink Fireman. Just wow.
Excellent story of an epic journey ending in a new friendship of shared values. Recharges the sole!
Soul?😊
Christ, Leo, you've inspired so many people with your project! This will be much more than a boat when you're all done...
Grats on the Pink Fireman for shipping the oak across the States. Well done sir.
Leo, glad your back on the job.
*A beautiful message from Marshall and Shannon at FOR 3 SISTERS!* czcams.com/video/RecyLsr4rhU/video.html
BELOW: The top questions from the first 6 hours answered here. Remember to ask your question in the first 6 hours of each new video.
Also, I'm really happy to say that F3S has received a huge and amazing outpouring of financial support from you guys! Thanks so much!
*What are you going to do for an engine?*
A modern (but very low-tech) auxiliary Diesel engine, probably around 85HP. I'd love to use electric power but I don't feel it would be the right option for this boat, with the plans I have for it. I'll explain this in much more detail at some point.
*Why not just file the thread off the auger and leave the tip for easier starting?*
Well actually, I didn’t think of it. But for hardwoods I really like to sharpen these augers on the Tormek grindstone, and I think that would be a lot more difficult with a pointed tip in the middle. I imagine it might make the drilling harder, too - it's difficult to even push a pin into wood this dense.
*How many batteries did you go through to drill those holes?*
Actually, only one! Modern cordless technology is amazing.
*How far and how long did it take him to bring you the wood?*
Check out the little segment right at the end of the video. About 1 week of driving, 3500 miles.
*Where did you get that brown jacket / the pink smock?*
The jacket came from Arborwear, they make great gear and I highly recommend it. The pink smock came from a thrift store (charity shop), via Cecca! The brand is DEAL.
*Do you recommend getting into boatbuilding?*
Absolutely! It has given me so much joy, and introduced me to many people who I admire. It may not always pay the best, but the builder of a beautiful wooden boat is always respected more than the rich man who paid for it.
*Why didn’t you counterbore for the nuts and washers in the beam shelf joints?*
Counterboring would remove structural grain and reduce the strength of the wood even more, at the point where it is weakest already. There will be space above and below the beamshelf, so there it really no need for it here. This is why I had to make sure to place the bolts where there would be no deck beam sitting on top.
I like this idea of having a scroll through the comments early in the video release and picking a few questions. Might seem like your spelling everything out but it’s greatly appreciated to get some insight into what’s going on behind the camera.
@@timmitchell8081 Agree, great addition to the site Leo
just wow, Love to see people helping out others, because they want to, not because they have to, well done Marshall, nice one Leo.
It’s people like Marshall that restore one’s faith in humanity. Your a wonderful man Marshall, and you Leo,great video.
Thank you Leo, and Marshall. You are both great men doing great work by example!
Welcome back Master Leo! Nice surprise to get a video this week and one so meaningful. This video really speaks for the beauty of the human soul and the kindness of our fellow man which is what makes life beautiful.
As for Marshall, man, all I can think is "wow" ~ what a special person and I think anyone who has missed out on this adventure is really missing out on something so much more important than "Tally Ho" itself because it really stands for so much more.
Some day Leo, when you're watching the sails and watching a horizon, the amount of reflection and the value of it you will have to draw on is nothing less than awe inspiring I can only imagine.
Until then! there is much to do and I can sense your fires are burning! The world is your fan base! Cheers!
damn, that oversize trailer sign wasn't lying :) hats of to Marshall!
Three cheers for Marshall and his wife. The donation of his time and the commission of his truck and trailer to bring that wood across the country was an amazing contribution to the TALLY HO project. It's amazing how people come out of the woodwork to support Leo in his rebuilding of the TALLY HO. Also a big shout out to the fellow who bought Leo the 7" Makita Hand Planer. That was an amazing contribution and you can see how important a roll it has played in the work done during this video. Another big shout out to Leo himself for beginning the restoration on the bolt threading machine. Getting that machine up and running to produce threaded brass bolts was an impressive accomplishment. I also have to take my hat off to your master craftsmanship Leo. Those scarf joints are the same quality has the most expert Japanese wood joinery. They fit together like rocks at the Inca ruins on the top of Machu Picchu. Impressive. It's exciting to watch the progress that is being made on this project. Well done Leo.
I'm truly amazed at the generosity of people. What a great thing Marshall did.
Great video, thanks.
I'm so jealous. Back when logistics was needed for some live oak boards out of Georgia to Washington, I volunteered to move it but I didn't real;ly have the equipment to do it. I'm so glad you found Marshall or he found you. Great way to move the white oak.
Too cool. We were passing through South Dakota on I-90 heading West bound . We ran into that same wide load. I imagine that Marshall ran into to ran into the same weather in Minnesota and South Dakota that we ran into. I am glad that he made it safely. It was white out conditions at times.
Marshall. What an amazing, beautiful human being.
I am re-watching the series again just to see the real star of the show, Pancho.
Do a collaboration with the Hand Tool Rescue! He could do amazing things with that threader.
