Building ORCA - Episode 1: Searching for our lumber

- We're back from a short break and boy do we have some exciting news, we've finally found the timber to get started on our biggest project yet, building ORCA! In this episode we head to Bristol Marine to look at an old NOVI so we can get more information about the shape of the hull and other things. Then it's off to New England Naval Timbers to find the right white oak log to start building the centerline. That log will include the keel, the horn timber, and several more parts of the boat. We are looking for material that is clear of the heart and quarter sawn. Next week we're headed back to get the log sawn and then we can take our timbers back to the shop and get started building ORCA!

The amount of knowledge this man has on boat building is unbelievable. The fact he is sharing it is absolutely awesome. Thanks to everyone that makes these videos possible.
I was named after a 36 and a half foot wooden Cape Island yaut built by David Stevens Lunienburg, NS. There is a big difference in the PEI boats today midsection different great mileage ! Love this chanel I have 4 great grandfather's that built the Cape Island boats wooden ones are the best Dave went to Expo 1967 Montreal by the Canadian boat builders built an 80 footer sailboat all copper nails ! Thank you Lewis
Absolutely love watching this guy talk about lumber
Considering the cost now days, might as well build it out of gold. :-)
To be fair, in his hands, it’s so much more than lumber. I think you’ll agree.
Those are some great glassing tips. Orca is going to be an exciting build. Thanks Lou!
“Making Orca” should be a TV documentary or movie. I’m so excited about this.we even have our own Quint 😬
It should be written out and broadcasted per telegraph! What are you on mate?
No if TV gets they will immediately dumb-down Lou's technical expertise so that some incidental viewer wont feel sad because don't speak nautical fluently.
‘I think we’re gunna need a bigger boat!’ Can’t wait for this build as with any of the build series’s you’ve already done. Thanks in advance!
You should check out the page "Orca Rebuild." He's been working on this for several years beginning with years of research, planning, searching for parts, and finding the perfect boat to use as the base of the rebuild. And he did find the perfect boat! He's acquired screen accurate parts. He's also doing everything without ANY financial help and very little physical help from anyone. He is working on the project in his off time, as this is a project of passion and love not money. I also follow all of his social medias ... He has BIG NAME followers! If you're going to quote Jaws at least do it right. It's you're gona need a bigger boat
Coming from Maryland, when I hear "down east" boat, I immediately think of a Chesapeake Bay deadrise... Beautiful lines, beautiful boats.
Search CZcams for Billy Moore. He has a wonderful video on his deadrise build
@@littleshopofsawdust1157
Yes, a lot more shallow draft deadrises on the bay but Lou and Billy were cut from the same forrest if not from the same log.
For me the setting up of the build is the hardest part to understand. Mr Sauzedde is terrific.
The knowledge I gained in the last 25 minutes earned by your years of hard work, mistakes made, and lessons learned. Thank you for generously handing over a lifetime of experience in your videos. I may never build my own boat, but I will certainly utilize the information for other woodwork and I will have something to talk about on my next flounder trip. Thank you
The new Glass Cape Island boats are 45 footers with a 5 foot overhang to hold more lobster traps and at least 22 feet wide .
Definitely an art to build a wood boat, one of the oldest profession's/trade's in the world slowly being lost by new and cheaper materials for lighter and stronger vessels, really makes me appreciate a person like you lou, knowledge you have I hope is not lost and your apprentice's or helpers look, listen, learn and take on-board all you teach, all the way from Australia mate we appreciate the videos keep up the good work.
Check out samson boat builders here on youtube for traditional wood boat rebuilding. Great channel.
And the government legislating away the boat building craft in the form of the luxury tax, no yachts are built in America anymore without undue cost. It's disgusting this stands.
For me, this is the most anticipated boat build on the internet. I'm really looking forward to it. Thank you!

I'm a boat builder here in Nova Scotia and that's what I build so I cant wait to see your take on it.
The 2 of them discussing how to cut the log was pure happiness
Teamwork
If you contact the “maritime museum of the Atlantic” in Halifax Nova Scotia they have original records of many of the original cape boats built in the area. They are a wealth of knowledge that could help with this build
Whether he is describing what is coming up in future videos, explaining why he does certain things certain ways, why certain logs sections of slow or fast growth wood is better for one task or another...
Or if he is actually showing us the work being done...
Lou is always teaching us how to do something in a way we might not have ever thought about, or reminding us of things we have not thought about for a long time.
Thanks for all you do to help us improve our crafts and make us better crafts-persons, Lou. We hope you stick around for a long long time showing us new and different ways to aproach our projects and think about how to tackle the tasks at hand.
Louis is the best boat builder in the wooden industry he gives very detailed introduction on the designs in all marine wooden boats and lumber.
Amazing!! I wish I would have seen Lou's trick about holding the glass down on the corners before I built my rowboat. Every video has such clever stuff.
I owned a 1966 38 foot Clark’s Harbor cape islander. I fished her two years out of Boothbay Harbor ME. Most of the boats in that period were built to last about 10 years. She was 55 when I sold her. Those boats were also spruce gooses. Some of the boats built farther up the coast were built of hackmatack. Very excited to see one built with higher quality materials! Beautiful boats and more seakindly than the newer wider ones. I have a wealth of photographs of her in various states of repair and with the deck up and the inside of the hull exposed. I would be glad to share them if it could be any help.
Sure! Email us at tipsfromashipwright.com
Super excited to see this build. One of my favorite boats of all time!
Thanks Lou, I'm going to enjoy both projects!
It warms my heart that Duke looks so good. Good for him!
Great job bringing these two projects together. Love your show.
For sure Lou is a goldmine of knowledge, and the ability to explain to all, thanks for sharing Lou
Those fiberglassing tips are terrific!
Awesome as always and I'm really excited about the Orca build.
Louis is a National Treasure. Thank you Louis!!!!!
Thank you Lou for this week's video. Always learn something from your videos. Looking forward to seeing the timbers for Orca cut. I imagine, based on the logs you showed, they are going to be beautiful. Take care and have a good week.
I don't know why, but Lou's playing with the "big head" in the lumber yard made me laugh so hard I spritzed a mouthful of coffee on my laptop, LOL.
I have always loved ORCA, so much so. That I ended up studying naval architecture. So what an incredible surprise when I found this new series. THANKS!!
incredibly informative - thank you so much for this video
couldn't be more excited about the Orca build !!!!!!
I'm waiting for the orca build to begin, it's going to be great to see the boat created!
Can't wait for the Orca build.
Took me a moment, but I eventually worked out that a "Novi" is so called because it's a Nova Scotian design?
Louis is a pure artist, so Comfortable in and around boats.
What a pleasure this will be to see a master craftsman sharing his boundless knowledge in the build. There could be no better apprenticeship for those that want to learn the old traditions of timber boat building. Joe
Thank you Lou!
I saw a guy who bought some old Novi Lobster boat from some Ancient Mariner, and fixed it up a bit for cruising around Lake Erie. Goofy, old, absent-minded professor kind of guy who went fishing in the middle of the night, was half drunk by lunch and asleep by tea time. He tried to see the sunrise two or more miles out on the lake if at all possible from April to September. That was his only goal in life, other than eating a few walleye and drinking some Scotch.
A truly knowledgeable craftsmen, joyful to watch - Bob Ross of the boat world
2021 just got a whole lot better. Looking forward to episode #2 already. Cheers!

Happy Birthday Lou!!
You mentioned how in N.S. they would change their designs from time to time. My father built wooden power boats back in the tp’s-60’s. He designed his own hulls. After they were built he would take them out for a test. Then on the next one he would change the shape of the hull if he thought it was needed. I remember one test he was really throwing the boat around. He was quite impressed with the stability of that one. All those old builders learned as they went along and we’re always looking for improvements or optimizing a boat for it’s expected use. Your videos bring back a lot of memories. Thanks

Another boat coming! Hurrah!
I love watching him build boats that are small but I am more intrigued in bigger boats
Have you seen the PEI Prince Edward Island boat ? It is like a Cape Island boat with a bottom modification to get the bow up out of the water more less resistance ???
Big Lou is like you, he likes wooden boats too. One of my missed callings I think would be shipbuilding.
This man has ideas. Incredible ideas. He'll be talked about long after he's gone in the boat building world.

Stanley Greenwood boats from Shag Harbour NS
that is some beautiful wood, i could have a hayday there cutting rib stock
Stay safe
I was named after my dad s boat a Cape Island boat built by Dave Stevens in Nova Scotia got caught in a November hurricane 50 foot waves run over 3 dark red lobster booies right around the prop headed to Hunts Point NS from Rye NH so lost not knowing if we where off the coast of Mane or Spain drifted like a surfer until we met a Coast Hard cutter off Portland Me. Got to ride their bosen s chair they towed us in . I never prayed so much in my life I was 7 but you never forget 65 now !!!
This feels like I missed an episode.
I was just about to go to the vid page to see if I had missed one.

Yep

Love your work Louis - Dumb question - Have you considered using vacuum bagging principals to hold you glass tight as is done in the composite boat building industry here in New Zealand

@@FriendsandFamilyView yeah i read about that guy. Orca 3 right? But isnt that a refit of an old lobster boat? Boggelo guy right?
@@captaintoyota3171 No. He is not the one that planned on calling it Orca 3. That was another guy. He had people donating money and his project has stalled (at least for now), and he sold the boat that was supposed to be used. The one I am referring to is ORCA REBUILD. This guy has a Lobster Yacht that is much more accurate for the transition. He has been acquiring screen accurate parts for the rebuild for years. He's been planning and working on this for many years. Once he acquired a good boat for the rebuild, he started the process with the boat and each piece that will go on it. Currently, he has stopped work to take care of a very ill family member. Of course, we understand that family comes first. Check out his channel here on CZcams. He also has FB, IG, and an Etsy store. This is a project of love for him, as he has loved the film since he was very young. He has accepted no financial help from anyone and has no plans to. It will take longer for him, also, since he is doing most all of the work alone and on his off time. But, I've seen the boat and many of the pieces in person. It's going to be AWESOME when he's finished!
