Matt, I built two boat sheds now using old billboard advertisement tarps they have advertisements on the one side and all white on the other. they're extremely durable and if you have a company out in Washington they'll gladly give them to you because most of the time they just go in a landfill. Typical size is 14 ft x 48 ft. it'll take several but they work great and last for years and years
we thought of this too-it's a great idea. The problem is what we need a 50 by 70 foot one.
@@TheDuracellProjectI've got some friends in the sign hanging business. That's where I get all my tarps. The biggest one I've seen was 60 ft by 110 ft here in St Paul Minnesota above a bakery. My friend has a two-stall garage filled to the brim with old tarps I'll see if I can do some digging around and find some big ones over the weekend
Perfect after his request this was my first thought
@@TheDuracellProject They're made from vinyl (aka PVC). You can use plumbers PVC cleaner and glue to weld them together.
@TheDuracellProject @mrFloatmaster suggestion is good. I have done that, out of London to cover a trailer and drove it to Portugal, over 2k kms... in my experience the paint concerning whatever was the advertisement, started to peel off.
Still happy to reuse and delay the carbon footprint, albeit spreading micro particles through France and Spain roads! I only noticed the paint coming out, half way the trip.
In your case no road endurance. Should last longer.
Size is not a problem, I used 2, you can figure out as per availability, it's free material, just your labour to sort out and install, and keep us all entertained 🤩
For Duracell purposes, you might want to consider:
1. Ask the "supplier" about the pealing/longevity
2. Leave the add facing out so any pealing doesn't contaminate the fiberglassing, painting etc
3. Being the U.S., and coz you are youtubing... ensure there are no conflicts with the advertising company, brand, whatsoever, in writing.
Maybe the advertiser will sponsor you!? 🤣🤞
The full 2024 side view of Duracell, at the end of the video, is truly a sight to behold. It proves that you hit upon the perfect height of the doghouse. It's perfection. It looks like she's going 12 knots just sitting there. Thanks for the boat tour.
thanks, Bob😊
Incredible craftsmanship and dedication!Total admiration for you both👍❤🛥️
The Gothic arches you've made are exact copies of what I and my uncle made in 1973 for his 60ft green houses. His arches are still around and functioning as intended due to two reasons. We made an arch shaped bathtub into which we poured a 50/50 mixture of PBA glue and water. We let them soak but I can't remember for how long. Secondly we painted them with oil based paint. These arches have spent 50 years in the high humidity greenhouse environment and still live today. The wood used was soft wood but not cedar.
I have followed from the beginning, but really enjoyed the before and after pictures. It's a permanent record of what you've accomplished. Thanks to Jannie for keeping track of all that you've done. And LaPawz for keeping the quality control at the superior level that it is 😁😁😁👍
This is by far my most favorite boat build on CZcams. A great couple and soon to be little mate, with wonderful family help. I always look forward to the weekly videos and progress.
I'm amazed at what you've accomplished in a few years. It's been really inspiring to watch! It's looking great!!
Few years lol he needs serious help it taking too long
All I see is the Thousands of Hours of dedicated work going into this vessel. Both you and your family should be congratulated to your work ethic and determination. We only see the results of your work, without taking into account the time taken in planning, procuring and execution of every detail involved. Thank you for your recording and documentation.
The sideview at 19:40 really shows the beauty of the lines, with the doghouse and hull window cutouts. Very successful transformation.
Never heard anyone personalizing thanks to each patreon….admire both of your work 🇨🇦 ❤
it's just something we started doing that feels like a really nice way to honor our patrons. :)
Wow, Duracell is starting to look amazing!❤❤❤
I watch your videos weekly, but this video made me realize just how far you have come. I too think the doghouse is my favorite space on the boat. I think the higher seats just improve the view. I think my favorite part of your channel is watching both of you, with hard work, determination and long hours building a dream one step at a time. Thanks for sharing it with us.
thanks for being a part of it, Joe :)
Wow, finally seeing Duracell full scale really lets you appreciate her lines. Beautiful!!
Episode 122 : building a shed
Episode 123 : visit from the building inspector
Episode 124 : pulling down the shed
:-)
oh no, let's hope not!! she has been hanging around a lot looking very serious
I love the lines of the boat. I wondered how the dog house would affect the look. Sitting still it looks like it's going 40 knots. 🙂
Great tour and to see the progress, I follow you weekly, but was still surprised at the progress, it’s amazing what I can forget!! Much love, The Senior Confessor
Everybody needs an Uncle Larry.
It's so great to see the before and afters and watching your amazing progress!!
Beautiful work. Inspired design meets true craftsmanship. Bravo.
Nice Inspector Sign!! 👍👍🐈🐈
I'm very pleased to see your channel do so well, it was always going to be an awesome project but with all that support you can really do it justice. Every Wednesday I'm happy it's a Duracell day, I can only imagine what it must be like to step outside and see it in the drive.
it's a dream come true.
Looks amazing already. The doghouse combined with the hull extension is just perfect.
Matt, your boat shed looks like a miniature upside down Noah's Ark. lol For real though, the boat is looking great 👍
What a great view of the Before and After. I hope you are proud of your progress which is so incredibly apparent in this video and distracts from the daily "grind" of the little things and the smaller progress. WELL DONE!!!
I'm amazed at how much you have accomplished, and then I think about how far you have to go....
Can’t wait to see what the boat has become in the next 3 years or so!
Shedfest is going to cover so much of the boat, so it is nice to see her unwrapped for a while. 2x👍 Great video work.
Used billboards are perfect and easily glued or welded , I have some and they have been out in the sun now 12 years and still perfect .
I'm into this project for the long haul. I have restored vintage Dirtbikes and it takes 6 months to year in my sparetime. This is on another level. Good thing the inspector is there to keep the project moving along.
Taking her all in from stern to bow, the transformation is glorious. Aft ship is spacious and functional and much improved over the original and the bow looks tough and really adds to the overall attitude of the hull. Interior, you have manifested the vision and your layout will have major boatyards observing your designs and clever innovations with admiration, if they aren't already.
Thanks for sharing the journey!
Dear Matt, I am amazed out how resourceful and talented you are and the massive amount of work you guys have done. You have been very inspiring to me as I took on the task of building a custom cosa and carbon bowsprit for my beloved “La Gloria,” a 1987 C&C MKIII. I watched your bowsprit build videos dozens of times while designing, building, and installing my sprit. One think I did different than you was I did not go with the external struts for extra strength for the vertical loads of the asymmetrical and code sails, and the downward loads of the anchor. I used 4, 3/4” carbon fiber pultrued rod as dowels that went through the y sections of the sprit, through the hull, and inserted into 2” homemade g10 with two layers of coosa all laminated together with epoxy and 1700 biaxial glass. Where the dowels go through the sprit arms I created struts that are made of 3 layers of coosa laminated together with 1700 biax, and then covered with 1700 to the inside of the sprit arms. I then drilled the holes in the arms. After laminating the sprit to the hull with 4 layers of carbon and once it had cured, I drilled the holes through the hull. I then glued the backing plates to the inside of the hull and after curing, I drilled the holes through the backing plates and then glued with thickened epoxy. The reason I am telling you all this is that I see you have had to think about how you will finish the exterior of your sprit with the struts, so I wanted to create a different solution that was easier for me to blend into the lines of my particular boat. I’d be glad to share photos with you if you’re interested. Mostly though, I want to say thanks for your hard work and dedication to the legacy of Mike Plant’s Duracell. Obviously a work of love. Best, R
total weight before hardware and paint was 25lbs
Shrink wrap is reusable. And recyclable. This would not require shrinking. And it can be repaired and will be waterproof. And will provide light. Tarps will be much heavier.
I started watching from episode 21, i think, and I'm not planning to stop supporting you guys. I appreciate the effort, greetings from Poland
thanks for being a part of our journey.
I so admire your long term ambition. I struggle to plan more than a season or two ahead...
What an effort to do largely alone. Congrats on the perseverance and success!!
Matt, I am totally impressed with the quality of the work you have put into this project. I think you maybe disappointed with the noise of the liquid in the tank under the bed in the quarterberth
It might be an idea to make provision for attaching guy ropes at the top of each gable so the roof can be snugged down if high winds are forecast. My friend built a bigger but similar boatshed and had to use wire cables such was the windage. The weakest vector component will be lengthwise
I watched a sermon about patient endurance yesterday and i couldnt help think of you guys! So glad you wake up with duracel twinkle in your eyes Matt dont tell Yani that is glass and gel dust! Joking aside it looks great and very strong. Hope you get all you need from sponsors and patreon to finish it to the standard you are obviously capable of. And why not, it will be great advertising. Good luck with the cover, white polytunnel might not be a bad idea, you would get plenty of natural light through but you may need to put somthing over the beams incase it snags and tears. Roll on the summer! 💪❤
Enjoyed the tour! Thanks!
Very impressive Matt and Yanna you are doing a great job documenting it.
Hi Matt,
One thought about the tarpaulin. It's going to be very heavy to handle if it's one piece. Better to use 2, 3 or even 4. Here in Scandinavia we cover our boats in the winter with thick ones (600 gr/m2 or more). The issue is to put them on, because they are heavy and you'll be lifting and unfolding them over the structure. Trust me better to do it in segments.
Regards to Janneke and the inspector😊
Thanks for all entertainment and keeping our hearts week through the winter...⛵🐆
I haven't read other comments so I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned this about covering the shed but billboard tarps are large and very durable. More durable than heavy duty tarps you buy in stores. Also very affordable. Turn the side with print inward for solid color outside. I think they are both white and black. I live in Georgia and see them go for about $40 a tarp and they don't look very worn at all. I think they are 14ft x 48ft so it will take more than 1 or 2 but still something to consider.
Already, that has to be one of the best boat interiors I have ever seen, glad to see you have done this old boat so well.
Since we only see specific spaces each week we (I) lose the idea of just how big Duracell is. So much space. She'll be a magnificent ship once you take her on her maiden voyage. Well done.
Amazing workmanship as always throughout the yacht but for me to throw a spanner in the works. I would sacrifice some headroom in the aft cabins in order to have more headroom and comfortable seating in the doghouse, apart from that you have the perfect yacht
Its looking fantastic, great progress.
hay tarps would be a good reasonable source
I there , love the project , its unbeliveable how far you have come! The Boat is looking great and i only have massive respect for you skills. I just wanted to point out that you should wait with the instalation of the footrests because the height of the bench is gonna increase once you put pillows on top. Keep up the great work!
Greetings from germany
Advertising banners. My wife needed outdoor resistant material for art project, and got for free big billboard banner. One side is white and I think this things go to landfill if not up cycled.
My sister in law created a company that uses used sailing boat sails. If you got just a few old big sails could be a great reuse; a little cut and sow, your good to go!. My brother is a boat guy, the main reason I watch and know something about boat stuff. Love your channel and watching your boat's transformation. Ciao Ciao!
Of all the design elements that you have shown in this video, the one I think you might regret is the area with the extremely high seating just inside the dog house. Even with foot rests I think you will find that sitting in those high seats is not going to be very comfortable; it never is for me when sitting at the bar at Outback, waiting for a table, and I’m 6’ 5”. I know you designed it the way you did in order to maximize head room in the quarter berth areas. Hopefully I am very wrong in this. One other thought: in 60’ of boat is there no way to have more than one head?
we could have chosen to have a second head, but would rather have other spaces. In actuality, it's really only about 45 feet of living space because of the water tight bulkheads.
I suppose I'm way too late, but you maybe could go to the farmers who grow hay for dairies. They often roadside their baled hay in big stacks along the edge of the field. These stacks often look about the same size as your shed. They even have companies that are in business to rent out and put on these big tarps so that the hay farmers don't have to own them.
Have you seen any actual working examples of composting toilets on yachts ?
I have experience of one at a camp cabin off grid. It worked fine if urine separation was done. Trying to use one with the boat healing could be very difficult though. There's a technique of how you place your anatomy to achieve placement of product into either main chamber or urine collection funnel. Doing that on a moving boat is a task I don't fancy trying. Also, the urine container would be liable to overflow if the boat was healed when it was near full.
we have. There are definitely some issues with them on boats, but the benefit of not having to pump out is pretty nice
A layer of glass tape over the weak knots would help prevent breakage.
_OUTSTANDING!_
Just wow!!!
Loved the tour,great work
Love it 🤩
Great to see all the progress all summarized. Congratulations- it is looking great
It’s amazing to see this progress in one video. Unreal how much has been done in the past years by basically one man. Hats off to you sir.
it's awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is amazing to reflect on how much you have done, Great job and I ( like you) can’t wait to see the finished boat. Makes my little MAT1010 look tiny. Keep it up.
Great preview
excellent video, thank you!
Thank you for the tour guys! Beautiful!!!
Looking good 🎉
So great to get the tour!
So much progress and still so much to do! Mad respect to the both of you! Keep up the good work, I love to see the rest of the proces!
You should definitley add a window to the bathroom, it will be worth the sacrificed space, light is important in bathrooms. luxury is measured by light and space, and you have the space!
we will add a hatch to the head!
Great video - love the recap! Thanks for doing it.
That's not going anywhere is the best dad joke. Great work Duracell, it's a voyage and a journey. Glad to get to enjoy the documentation you're creating.
Might try used tents for outdoor weddings and the like…. Might need to overlap a few 🤞
HUGE amount of work! Well done 🎉!
Really great progress...can't wait to see the finished project! Cheers!

Beautiful shed . So happy sponsors have stepped up.
Congratulations on 3 years and your amazing building and visual documentation…….Love to you both💖💖💖🇦🇺
Great work! Matt and Yani.
That been a lot of work both on the boat and also the videos. Thank you for letting us share your adventure. Best wishes.
Thanks for the complete view of the progress so far. It is coming along great!👴👌☺
I think if you make a couple of windows in the foot area of the dog house the births bellow will have better natural lighting
Binged on your project today. Thumbs up all the way. Great project and videolog
You both have done an incredible amount of work! It's getting there.
Fantastic craftmanship. Awesome family and crew. Wonderful project. The boat is looking great. Well done.
I cant believe its been 3 years, time flies when your having fun 👊🏻
Thanks!
Thank you, Mark! :)
Check out large commercial roofers. They may have off-cuts of the large roll-roofing.
