Building ORCA - Episode 3: Construction begins! Cutting and scarfing the keel!

  • Construction on ORCA has begun!!! The first goal for us is to get our centerline set-up. This will consist of the keel, forefoot, stem, stern post and horn timber. ORCA will be 40 feet long and the keel will be just under 30 feet made from two large pieces of white oak. You saw us select and process these timbers at the mill in episodes 1&2. Before we can scarf the pieces together we need to make sure they are exactly square and parralel or the scarf wont match well so we're going to check them with a square and knock it back with the electric place where needed. Now we're ready to make our first plunge cut. There's no easy way to make this cut, especially trying to cut the 2 degree angel so for this first direction I have no choice but to plunge into the material before moving the saw forward. Once we have our two scarfs we're going to connect them and we've got our keel! Our next step is to attach the forefoot to the front of the keel, stay tuned for that and more exciting ORCA news coming soon!
Also, come visit us at the Newport Boat Show this September 15-18th at the TotalBoat booth, we'll doing all kinds of fun things and would love to answer questions and talk about boats and anything else. We'll have a coupon code shortly for discounted admission. More details soon! See you there!

Hey Lou, I’m glad somebody had the foresight to record you at work. What a wonderful thing to leave to the woodworking and boat building community. There is nobody in or around woodworking since Norb Abram that explains things better than you just love your videos and learn tons we could get young kids into paying attention, imagine what the future would hold. Keep making them beautiful.

Curious coincidence, Lou, regarding the 2 degree angle. I was watching a UT video about early water distribution, which mentioned an ancient Greek making a tunnel through a mountain. As he couldn't guarantee that his excavations from both ends would meet exactly, he angled them slightly horizontally so that they had to cross at some point. There was no mention about how the vertical alignment was maintained, but the horizontal trick was as clever as yours!

I enjoy these videos, but this is my first comment. I once went to an exhibition of Russian space craft, and before that an exhibition of American and European spacecraft. The differences were remarkable. Russian crafts were (to my eye) crude with mismatched joints and exposed welds. American and European machines resembled Swiss watches. Over time Russia machines performed as good as, and sometimes better than American/European machines. This was acknowledged by the docents. My point? It will make no difference in performance or longevity if the ORCA keel is slightly off kilter. I admire your desire for perfection, but it is not needed in a boat worked hard through it's lifetime. If it headed for the motion picture museum in LA, that is a different matter.
