Building ORCA - Episode 6: Connecting the keel to the forefoot

  • We're moving right along with the centerline of ORCA and we're also happy to announce that we have picked up the V-Bottom skiff and will be putting her in the water this week for a test run so stay tuned for that!
This week on ORCA, we need to back-up the scarf between our keel and forefoot. To do this we're going to fashion a piece that will span the two other timbers and then be fastened with bronze bolts all the way through to create a strong connection. The rabbit line will then run right through this joint and allow us to set the planking into the keel and forefoot.

Who was surprised when the spanner piece was a perfect fit, first time ? Yeah, thought not…
I could watch Lou stack shelves all day and still be entertained by the way he talks about it. This is CZcams at it’s very best, there’s no doubting it, what a fabulous project this is going to be - MSM, watch and weep.

Lou, far from me to tell you how to use your saw, but you might want to adjust the rear roller guide a bit forward. It looks like the blade’s teeth hit the side guides when you feed the wood in as evidenced by the sparks. As you know, that’ll dull it pretty quick. My first job after being trained as a Navy shipwright was to cut oak planks for the old wooden hull minesweepers on an old re-saw bandsaw about that size.

This is so educational as well as entertaining! I need to replace a bad wooden add on keel that was mahogany wood put on a groverbuilt 26' boat many years ago and is now rotted. I have been told I should use mahogany again or brazilian oak as a replacement. The boat is fiberglass with stern having a fiberglass keel and this keel bolted from it to bow area 2 1/2" wide, maximium of 6" tall tapering to only 2 1/2" tall where it stops shy of bow and wood keel addition is total of 20' 6" length. Can I use white oak and make it in two sections scarfed like this one instead of mahogany? Does anyone know if I should or not? Any help much appreciated!

    • @oikkuoek

This is the keel we are talking about, gentlemen. The very backbone of the ship. You want it to be "one" strong piece. Mechanical connections loosen over time due to the flexing of the timbers. I would be more interested in hearing what Lou has to say.
