EPISODE 97
In this episode we work towards sealing up the timber of the hull, inside and out.
First we varnish the interior of the boat, using a traditional varnish that should hopefully hold up for decades. Then we get a serious workout with some good-old-fashioned “torture-boards”, we glue and trim plugs, and we get a little closer to painting and moving the boat. We have a bit of a change of crew as David and Rowan head back to the East coast, and we get some great help from some local guys. Meanwhile Pancho delights in a game of hide-n-seek.

Leo, on the teak - get in touch with the USS Iowa Museum. They're in the middle of a $5M re-decking of the battleship, in teak, of course. They may be able to give you some options.

I have watched and enjoyed it right from day one. I think this is the greatest project that I have seen in my 84 years and I will continue to watch and pay for however long it takes. I would like you to stay where you are but I have digested the problems you have faced and realized that a move is your only choice. Leo...keep up the good work. You have proven that you can manage and foster lasting and productive friendships and the future is yours.

What it's like to be old' well I'm 64, still at sea as a skipper, and every day hurts. I make a noise getting up off a seat, and also sitting back down 😅 life is short my friend, non of us get out alive, enjoy every second if you can, fair winds.
You must go train some crossfit. I'm the same age and have no pains and aches :)
My wife's aunt spent her final years in what then was called a "Rest Home."
She had a boyfriend there who once told me, "At my age, almost everything hurts. And what doesn't hurt, doesn't work!"

I'm that age too, but a lifetime of hard work took its toll. I physically could not do longboarding due to repeated rotator cuff injuries. Them's the breaks.
Now, in addition to the satisfying progress and technical details, we get a bonus: the sheer aesthetic pleasure of the finished hull, inside and out. The wooden boat, one of man's most beautiful creations.
The parrot is a real character. He will miss all the activities and his new friends.

She belongs to Leo’s hosts, sadly, so we’ll all miss her when Tally-Ho moves. She’s a real character to be sure.

When I first saw the boat, along with how young Leo appeared, I thought he was way over his head. I very quickly realized my assumption about him couldn't have been more wrong.
Yes, I echo the other comments. Goodbye David and Rowan. Rowan was a surprise to me. He became such a long lasting part of the team. When I first saw him, I doubted he would last. Just goes to show! I think he is probably a gentle soul, and people like having him around. Can't ask for much more than that from anyone.
The glow inside the varnished hull is so incredibly beautiful.
This is more than a restoration of a boat. It's a work of art.
I live near some of the Devon (England) wooden boat builders. Previously it really interested. Leo, crew and Tally Ho have shown me what I’ve been missing.
Hopefully the wonderful Cecca will be back soon. We all miss her.
They didn't call it 'Art' in 1910 it was called a work boat not a pleasure yacht club.

However, for a lot of the subscribers to this channel, who've never seen the construction of a wooden boat like this, let alone any boat, this one is being built with pride, finesse and just share elegance. Therefore, for me and many others, it's craftsmanship at a different level.
@@allenschmitz9644 You are wrong. Tally Ho always was a pleasure yacht. Furthermore working boats were never built with this level of exquisite craftsmanship. This rebuild is a work of art indeed.
I have never been more enthralled by any subject I have zero knowledge of before, I know nothing about the craft of boat building, but the work I have seen during this restoration looks like it could not physically be done any more thoroughly.

Thank you Leo for showing the world and the you tube community a good and proper way to build a wood boat that will last generations. Some of the saddest videos I see are those of people spending years to build their boats with substandard materials thinking everything will be fine not realizing the dramatic effect it will have in the life of their boats. The true cost of a boat is not so much in the materials but in the labor to assemble it. You are showing the world a masterpiece in creation. Well done sir and I hope to see you in port townsend some day.
Leo doing 15 hours of video editing per week on top everything else... All of these people work so hard; physically demanding work. Leo though; I don't know how he's able to do all the things and for so long. It's mind boggling.

If you love what you do you won't work a day in your life. Except if you are a boat builder, then you will work ALL the time forever. Honestly though, I think it is Leo's passion that does it. That was what captured us all and then we got to learn a lot along the way.
@James Lawson Yeah, understood. I've also done both types of labor/work and many things in between, as well. I shoveled mountains of horse manure on Saturdays for pocket change when I was 12 years old to buy art supplies, when I wasn't under my dad's wood boat on my back, on the gravel covered hard, painting the hull bottom with antifouling paint in the spring, mowing lawns or helping dad do carpentry projects or whatever. I've made art, design, photography, video shorts and music, built furniture, computers and guitars... much of it professionally... multiple college degrees from very demanding programs, etc. THE POINT: Leo clearly does Herculean amounts of physical, intellectual, analogue and digital forms of work, seemingly indefatigably. Leo also clearly loves what he is doing. It's extremely admirable.
And the office spotless, complete with plants😂
Most people don't consider their own labor when they would set a value to paper on her. If Leo missed out on 3 years wages while restoring her, well, don't sell yourself short.

I can only imagine how emotional Tally-Ho's maiden voyage will be. Love the chisel work...Chisels are perhaps the most useful hand tool ever created. My gramps made me learn how to properly sharpen my hand tools. 40's vintage Stanley sweethearts are my faves.
I've watched this from the start and it NEVER ceases to amaze and astound me. It's really looking incredible. Thanks to all of you wonderfully insane people.

Taking notes..."a long board is essentially a long board". I'm about to start my own build so these are pearls. Been following from day one. Best vlog on CZcams!
Either you will grow to love the long board and therefore boat building, or not be a boat builder. Long board can be as simple as a piece of Plywood with sand paper glued to one side and a couple of cleats glued to the other.

At 9.13 when he is talking about fairing, or something that I never seem to understand but which is so watchable, if you look at the picture of Tally Ho in a glass frame behind; Leo's hair and the sails appear to have the same profile. Amazing.
He is English, and that is a complete look over there! It was in the US for awhile (there was a product called "bed head" back then. The English are 100% more fashionable than the lazy look of Americans all in yoga pants and cargo shorts LOL. So you laugh at his hair, I laugh at the comments because they say more about the people making them than they do about Leo's hair. His hair says "I don't care about how my hair looks" but it IS a cultured look. The comments say "I have never been to England before" LOL.
All of your crewmen have done such Han awesome job on Tally Ho! They dive right in on any project you assign to them, without any reservation nor hesitation: a true marks of an amazing and awesome crew!
I also understand the role of the leader of any project, they set the tone of the work: moment by moment. A fair, honest, competent, kind and fun leader is awesome to work for. I do not mean someone that doesn’t requires and ensures honesty and integrity from each crew members. If a mistake is made , own up to it and if the mistake is found out and not known by the member it’s how the leader handles the issue.
You, Leo are the leader that I’m talking about above. You treat all with dignity and respect in every conversation you have with all. You never forget that they are human and a workmate when taking with them. NO Drama, is an great skill set to have and you have it!
Many work decades and Never learn and acquire this ver important skill set and my friend, you have it!
Really like what you and your Mates are doing with the boat!

Throughout this project I’ve been impressed every time a chisel is in play. I feel lucky if I can just put a decent edge on my mower blades.
Your videos verify my 45 years as a carpenter and makes an old man very happy.

Boat builders should have a Chiropractor on the team. Pains happen far less when everything is moving as it should and you perform better.

“I am an old person that has long boarded. It is just like having your shoulders grow older. ” Don’t you just get sore muscles from longboarding? Overhead press (the weightlifting exercise) can give you quite some interesting DOMS as well. Somehow the pain from deltoids is just especially sweet.
I ran a 40lb Rockwell grinder for Ingalls shipyard in Pascagoula MS. Overhead and sometimes on stilts. After 6 months I was called popeye as my arms were as big as my legs. My neck is what gave out first.

Pete has such a good presence in front of the camera now, I really hope that when this is all over, in two years, he will allow us to follow him as he works on other projects.
Leo ..... Pete’s competence and confidence along with his obvious professional boat building skills must bring you a lot of assurance that you have a ‘second you’ on the job whilst you are tied up in the office with the ‘have to’ jobs.
I feel so bad for Pancho. I’m sure she will miss having you all around when you move Tally Ho to Port Townsend. You need to get a Parrot of your own now Leo. After all, what kind of Pirate would you be without a Parrot? Tally Ho looks incredible. All of your hard work and attention to detail has really paid off. It’s been a blast watching you all along. It’s made me think about all the years that my Dad and I worked on our boat. She was a 1969 35’ Pacemaker Convertible Sedan. She weighed close ton15,000 lbs and we sanded and painted her many times over the years, and had so much fun, even though it could be hard work at times.
i understand the long lived birds are very demanding pets. so having the crew working there provided some entertainment for Pancho. allowing the owners a break from being Pancho's constant entertainment. i may not have this right if not please comment .

I had to come back to older episodes, especially this one with all the gorgeous interior. What awesome work was done by these fine people. This is much better watching than most of what is on offer on commercial television. My guess is I'll return many times to these videos.
There is only one word to describe that varnished hull and frames and that is SEXY!

Long boarding is the WORST job in boat building, in my opinion. It's "torturous" on your arms, back, neck, hell, it hurts everything.........
I can't wait until they trailer the boat back to the boatyard and see the look on their faces when they see Tally Ho in all her glory!
Sad to hear that the parrot wont be joining you when you leave this place. To me she seems to be a part of the project and the boat by know as I have seen her so much in the videos. I also think it would be appropriate to commemorate her in the build with a circular parrot plaque made of bronze or whatever...something nautical. In any case parrots have good memory and it would be a good idea to give her a visit once in a while if she cannot join you in the new yard :P

Just love the ball pein hammers you use. My dad who is long gone was in aviation and I grew up with his long handled hammers. My late and dear friend Dennis was a marine engineer a true “boiler maker” who crafted stainless steel boilers for steam turbine driven liners and ocean going tankers left me his short handled ball pein hammer exactly like what you guys are using....I am truly chuffed to own it now...it’s not a freak!

I understand about trimming the plugs....I love mowing my lawn.....I find it peaceful and diverting. I use nice noise-cancelling headphones...sometimes silently, other times i'll listen to non-fiction audiobooks.....and I usually stretch the job out.

As ii sit in my 55 yr old wooden yacht on a mooring ,bouncing around on a stormy day ,looking at Leo and crew amazing achievements..rebuilding the Talley Ho. (Of which I grew up with the same photo in our den ,).I am enamored at the synchronizaty of our world .and the artisans that keep the traditions alive , as some one who learnt these skills 50 yr ago ,and still using them , and I can attest to owning a very worn out body , from yrs of tough physical work from 13yrs of age .But wouldn't have it any other way , ,When I look back at whats been achieved. I'll have no regrets,...
Don’t compromise Leo this build has been top quality from day one.

I worry about Pancho. For several years there's been a lot of activity going on around her. When you move down to the boatyard, all that will stop. I worry that she'll get bored - a bored maccaw is a very sorry maccaw.
But she will always remember the experience of Tally Ho!

I've been sad about that too, pets are often the ones most effected by change, and the least thought about. I'm certain the person who complained 1,000 times about the boat never thought about the effect it would have on Pancho, yet it still happens. On the bright side, that complaining neighbor complained about Pancho shouting, and now that social macaw is about to start screaming for attention 24/7 without Leo. Oh the sweet irony.

I nearly had a heartattack when i returnd from the fridg with a beer,al the bronze was painted blue,after a second a saw it was maskingtape..........wonderfull nice job guys this boat gonna be a jewel grtz from Antwerp. -
Just found the channel a week ago and have been on a marathon ever since. I’m both sad to not have another episode queued up, but happy to be following now in real time. What a journey you’re all on and I’m so grateful for the excellent documentation. A real treasure.

What an amazing piece of Artwork!!! I just love every step in this years long project. So glad i stumbled onto this channel at the very beginning. I'll never build a boat, but I've caught a glimpse of what it takes and look forward to each episode and hopefully then on to watch the yacht sail the world. Thanks Leo and crewmembers all.

In the mid 70's I bought a classic Dragon sailboat (the last wooden boat in the Olympics). Took a long time to replace ribs and making it ship shape. But nothing like the time you guys are spending on this beautiful project. When I/we were finished, everyone on their fiberglass boats were filled with envy.
Beautiful wooden boats are great if they belong to someone else :) My father owned a Drachen (Dragon) build in the 50s out of Teak and Mahagoni. For every hour sailing one had to spend 20 hours to keep the boat in shape.

Leo has the passion for wooden boats, I just love to look at them when they are well kept, because I know how much sweat, money and time it costs to keep them that way. No boat beats the look of a well kept and maintained wooden boat. I myself prefer my "plastic" one because I love to use it more than I love to spend time for maintenance

Leo you have done absolute wonders. And your fellow workers have become like family to us all out here. I’m in Australia have only hobby built plywood and also ‘fibre glass’ boats and am totally intrigued by your magnificent project......Thankyou and your ‘mates’ for taking us all along with you.
