Fuckn have to be a rocket scientist to change out a hard drive
Thanks a million for this guide!!! I've been looking for a month now on how to do this since my stock hard drive crashed. You're a life saver
I never wrote a review but you saved me $115 and the hassle of dealing with xbox support. great tutorial and very through. really saved my xbox and even got to update the drive. thank you again and keep up the great work
Thanks for the walkthrough. After my first attempt I got either E.101 or E.200. I attempted to update from usb at that point but could not. Started over and reformatted the hdd as per your instructions and it worked. I had to do a System Reset via the xbox menu to get it to allow me to login properly and for all to work, but I'm SUPER stoked to have my xbone back! Cheers!
did you use OSUDT2 or OSUDT3?
2
Thank you :)
Thank you so much for this video!!! It's Oct. 12, 2016 and this method works the best!! I've tried the other method, the scripts for windows and it never works... It's best to do this in a Linux environment. Something about the windows environment keeps causing me to get error e101 even though i did everything right... I did this method with a 500GB drive, and it works great for fixing your xbox one. I used the update "OSU1" on both the drive and the thumb stick to boot from and no problems with a 500GB drive. I was also on the latest dashboard before i did this method. When I reboot the xbox one, it takes 30 seconds get from cold start to the dashboard. I also did 3 factory resets and no problems at all!!! FYI: IF YOU UPGRADE TO A LARGER DRIVE THAN WHAT YOUR XBOX CAME WITH, DONT DO A FACTORY RESET, IT WILL CAUSE YOU TO GET ERROR E102 AND YOU WILL NEED YOUR 500GB DRIVE AGAIN TO REPEAT THE PROCESS.... Good luck everyone!!! Happy Gaming!!! 😊😊😊😊
Everytime I need something there you go and do a tutorial. it's like you read my mind!!
Very nicely explained , thank you for all file sources. Good guide.
Just wanted to say thank you for this tutorial i tried jrunner didn't work for me this worked with no flaws at all one thing i did notice that my hard drive didn't mount but i figured it out Thank you for all you do with your tutorials!
pretty simple if you just click on it you will see it will say mount one each portion of the drive if you unclick it , it will say unmount should show a arrow in each partition
5-year-old video and it is still useful. Rufus and Ununto both had tons of updates since then but the layout and auto-updates of the two software made things a bit easier. I really appreciate you taking the time to record yourself doing this for others. I do have one question... Would formatting a new hard drive and then directly cloning the new drive from an old drive not work? I get this video is excellent for those that have a dead drive, I'm just curious. Thanks again.
This tutorial is the best it worked for me and my Xbox one works just fine.
i cant get it to work, what did u do to make it work? i followed the exact steps of the video
I Must say thanks very much for this video, i bought an ordinary 500GB Wester Digital laptop hard drive and followed all the steps and it worked just fix. On my first boot up i got an error message so i hold down the power button and wait for the game to shutdown then turned it back on again and it worked just fin. xXModdedWarfareXx thanks very much for your assistance with this issue i have been having your video was a great help. To anyone doing this method please note that you should conduct a factory reset after you have successfully booted up on the new hard drive. There will be some weird named file showing up on your console along with your previous accounts. This should not be as you are now on a new hard drive. If you try to run any game you eill receive errors so just do a system factory reset and all will work just fin.
It actually doesn't seem that complicated.
Thanks! Liked and Subbed
Jrunner isn't supposed to install the files, but it works fine if you use the Xbox One HDD tool, then follow that with the OSUDT. The tool isn't designed for drive formatting, only for deleting and installing Windows on the drive.
This tutorial was a massive help thank you! although I wasn't able to complete it using it alone.
Took quite a few hours to get it working, so thought I'd post my solution here for anyone who is stuck.
I ran into heaps of troubles doing this but FINALLY got it all working...
Biggest problem was all the E1x, E2x, E6x errors...
I tried OSU1, OSU2 & OSU3... tried using them from a USB in the $.SystemUpdate update folder (or whatever it was called), tried them in the System Update volume; and used the Python scripts as noted above... still did not work.
Maybe it was my model of XBox One, although to get it working what I did was:
* Booted to Ubuntu
* Formatted drives to partitions using the Python scripts
* Reformatted the volumes for the ones that didn't work (weird) (as per this video).
* Connected the original XBox hard disk & copied the System Update folder contents to my local network. (you could just use an external or something).
- I noticed it was 8.8Gb or something, much larger than the downloads, anyways...
* Copied the A & B folders; and updater.vfx or .vxf (or whatever the extension is) into the new SSD from my network share (or wherever you put your files).
* Ran the Python xboxonehdd.py script.
* Unmounted all the volumes.
* Put the new SSD in the XBox One, fired it up and it successfully went through the preperation, updating, etc.
I was starting to think I'd stuffed it until I reverted to the original hard disks updated files... now the XBox is running a treat on my brand new Samsung 850series EVO 500Gb... (I only did it for the speed boost).
I don't play many games at all, just a few here and there so 500Gb is okay for me... but if money were no object, going the Samsung Pro 850 1Tb! Would be nice if XBox supported M.2 drives, but for now... this is pretty awesome.
A GREAT SPEED BOOST...
Thanks for an awesome video and I hope my notes help someone else out, cheers and good luck....
can you upload your system files im getting all kinds of Exx errors and dont have my originals
7.30.2016 - Process still works here are some observations
- Does not work for any HD larger than 2 TB
- Unmount partitions before exiting Ubuntu
- Make sure you use the correct OSUDT file, mine used OSUDT2 not 3
- Clonezilla process also works as an alternative if you have a working xbox HD
- see user Xifx xbox replacement videos, there is a link to an updated xboxmaster file
I used a combination of both moddedwarfare's process and Xifx's
could you just clone the original drive??
thanks for this your videos are great!
Great tutorial!!!
Thanks!!!🙏
Nicely explained
worked great, thanks
Safety Note: If you are at all worried about nuking one of your drives in the machine because you selected the wrong /dev/sdX option, just unplug the SATA cables from all drives EXCEPT the new Xbox One drive which will prevent them from even showing up in Ubuntu.
+Casper14242 Good tip :)
So I recently got my 1TB SSD to work in my Xbox One. I used the update files from the original HDD. I had several cases of it not working until I realized that my USB/SATA adapter was not cutting it. Data wise its fine but I guess it wasn't properly formatting. I kept getting the same error that we are warned about in the video. Once I plugged it into the SATA cable on my desktop it worked on the first try.
For anyone asking if this still works, the answer is yes, but there is an extra step. I just did it this morning. First if there are any errors while using ubuntu, simply do it over. It seems more time i deleted the partitions and started the process over, the smoother it sent without giving any errors. Use OSUDT2 for the files to A and B. Make sure all 7 files are in each and the updater file is just next to A and B. Here is the newly required step. Since Update 3 is out, you have to download the OSUDT3 (Offline system update tool 3) from xbox.com Put it on a flash drive and follow the direction on the site for updating by usb. To do this you have the press bind and eject at the same time and hold them in. While holding tap the Xbox logo to power it on and keep holding bind and eject until you hear the chime again then let go. It will take a few minutes to download and install the update but in the end it works. I see people keep asking but the answer is yes it does. It's 7/10/2016 for reference.
There must be some steps missing. I've been trying to do this for 7 hours today.
I followed the video precisly. Formatted the drive, copied the OSUDT2 files to the appropriate folders, and ran the scripts. No errors.
I saw your extra steps so I copied the $systemupdate folder and files to another USB drive. I have my network cable unplugged. Inserted the USB, pressed Bind, Eject and Power until second power on beep. When I let go I get a screen with four options. I chose "Offline system update" USB (top right). I get error E102 right away.I've chosen other options too and cannot get it to continue. Is there something saved in the BIOS from the original hard drive? Before I removed origianl hard drive I reset to factory defaults, then signed in with my XBOX Live ID and followed the initial setup procedure.
I'm uprading to a 2TB Seagate drive. ST2000LM007.
That screen means you did not initiate the process correctly. If you do it correctly it will auto load the flash drive. When you use ubuntu the trick that worked for me was to keep deleting the partitions and start over. doing that, I no longer had to individually format the partitions to ntfs and on about the third try it was making partitions in ntfs and simply clicking on the partition on the "files" tab make it mount the drive. It can be trick to get the osudt3 file (or any offline system update) to take., but when you do it'lll start automatically. Once you've done it a couple of times you can do it easily. Try to press and hold bind and eject and the same time. Line up your fingers and press at the same exact time. then simply stretch a finger over and even use a knee to touch the power button but dont let go of the bind and eject until the second startup chime.
When I first tried it I has errors, including the OSUDT2 having only 7 files in it instead of 8. Make sure that all 8 are there (before deleting the updater file)
Have all 8 files in $SystemUpdate folder on flash drive. I can't seem to boot without going to the Troubleshoot(ing) screen first. I was pressing the power with my left knee because it was easier than my right knee. I have the xobx in an AV cabinet where my processor is, which is about seven feet off the floor. I can't connect directly to the TV becuase the TV is at the same height and it's flush mounted in a cabinet. I can't get to the cables in the back of the TV unless I remove the TV from the mount and lay it on the floor. So, if I need to press the XBOX power button with my right knee, I'm in trouble.
this hurt my 3 brain cells from start to finish but thank you so much life saver
Hypothetically, you can plug the Original HDD and copy everything into the right partitions on the larger HDD. Right or no?
Remember that there is now an OSUDT3 after the new Dash update. If you can't get this working with OSUDT2 then try using OSUDT3 or use the files from your original Xbox One hard drive.
+Daniel G same dude
I get an error after trying to extract the OSUDT3 file to A and B folders?
+Adam Walker Use OSUDT2 !!
+Daniel Silva I tried OSUDT same thing, says files completed when extracting, then comes up error and nothing is in the folders
Adam Walker It does the following places the OSUDT2 in HD and Pendriver, then turn on the Xbox and passes the OSUDT2 the way they teach on the Microsoft website!
Work perfect for me. THX
i cant get it to work, what did u do to make it work? i followed the exact steps of the video
If Xbox Live comes out with an update will I have to do this all over again or will the update just copy to the drive like normal. And do you think you can do an update video for the Xbox one X please.
Thank You!
First off can I just say fantastic guide. Easy to understand and easy to follow.
Does this still work after the December update. Don't just say yes as I have been reading that is doesn't.
Also my original xbox hdd is stuffed can I do this without any files from it and just do what is in video and it will work?
+Ian Lindsay I'll find out and talk , the more I think not
not :(
you can also use another program called "universal usb installer" to mount the iso to a usb stick
Nice informative video. Is easier to buy 2tb xbox 1s and use 4tb external drive IMO. 6TB of space
Hey there Modded Warfare! After formatting and copying the files over my User Content partition will not mount and the last command says it needs to have 5 partitions.....
I hate how complicated this is compared to the ps4
Question: if i unplug the original harddrive from my xbox and then plug it back in, does everything still work like before?
I just brought a xbox one when I turn it on after doing this tutorial it goes to a factory reset preparing system and then displays an error code e200 is there a way to fix this?
figured out how to keep all original files on the original hardrive and copy them to the new harddrive keeping everything good working without the wait at first start, and a work around with the December update
Russ Gyurek so it works like original now?
I get an error message on my Xbox when I start it up. How do I fix this? I formatted the hard drive in Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro.
Are you not able to attach the new HD to your Xbox and have it identify it and format it before you open and add it to your Xbox?
Hi,. Do you have any idea why I succeeded to get well created all my partitions with their corresponding right size. But when I tried to convert them to XBOXONE partitions type with the last command sudo python ./xboxonehdd.py sdc, It did not work at all. I got as before (first command)..."Disk must have 5 partions..." It''s like that I can not open the disk. After I modified the python code and when I made a print of the array "disk", I got printed [ ], an empty array? Thanks for your help. Also for your information my hdd is a 2TB Samsung 4K per cluster.
I just followed your instructions, received no errors. It booted into Xbox but no dashboard loads. If I hold the xbox button, I get the shutdown options fine. Just all black screen, no dashboard. Your thoughts?
Question ? Will this method work for xbox one slim gears of war 2 terabyte model because i want to swap it out for a 4 terabyte hard drive.
Would it be possible to get xbox one to use 4tb ssd?
I want to upgrade the storage to run the games, and get the updates
I seem to be having a problem with this. I have done all the steps correctly. I think, however, when I try the drive in my console the green screen of death appears. Before putting the drive in the console the partions are mounted and the files are sent. But when I put the drive back in the PC the partions are corrupt. I am doing a complete format and trying again. Any tips?
do you think i can do this with a mac os? it is lung based and i do have terminal with sudo
Hello I am replacing a faulty hard drive. I used the osudt2 files. I don't even get to the boot logo on the Xbox. Instead I get an e102 error. Is this related to the hard drive or is there something else I can do?
Would you do a video like this with the Xbox One S
I've followed everything up until the last step when you have to re-enter sudo python ./xboxonehdd.py
When I do this, it just says "Disk must have 5 partitions blahblahblah" like it does the first time, I can't get it to say the "These changes will be permanent" thing. Any idea?
Please make a video on how to make skins for aurora please!!!
hi bro, this still working at date? just try it a few times but never recognizes de hdd, sometimes got erro on partitions and haver to format manually, cant get the osudt3 but i have osudt 1 and 2
it didnt work for me i did the co mmands and everything correct and when i get dont setting up my xbox and go to my settings to check the storage it shows theres a 500 but reall theres a 1tb........ im upgradeing from a 500 to a 1tb got any idea how to get the 1tb to work
Is this still relevant/working? I've got a client whose hard drive died in their XB1. Looks like a good tutorial!
Yes but when booting you have to use the OSUDT3 file on a flash drive to upgrade it or it'll just throw error codes. Look up the offline system update tool on xbox.com for the directions on how to do this.
i need files OSUDT2, when iam downloading them from Microsoft online service it comes up corrupt every damn time. Or clone files from A&B folders from original xbox one drive. my original hdd is a brick. at this point iam stuck without those files. PLEASE HELP!!!!
is there a way you can just buy the hard drive already formatted to bypass all this to limit any mistakes or confusion??
So i have an Xbox one with a 500 GB hard drive which makes a clicking sound and gives issues booting up. sometime the game boots up fine and works then when the clicking sound from the hard drive starts it freezes up. if i do this process to my current xbox one hard drive will this fix the issue?
Today I swapped my hard drive for a 1TB Samsung. It works like a charm. I'm installing Fallout 4 now, but I ran into a little problem. When I go to Settings -> Network I can't access the network settings. Do you have any idea as to why that is? Is it the wireless card that's malfunctioning? Maybe it's been damaged? Have you heard about any one with the same problem. Right now I'm using an ethernet cable to connect to xbox live.
@xXModdedWarfareXx does this still work after the latest update?
im curious, if i do this toa 1tb wb blue drive, and install it to a cutom build pc, would that force it to run the xbox os? im curious and would love to see if it is possible to create a xbox 1?
I did everything exactly how you described and now I'm getting a system 106 error. Any ideas what to do about that?
does the space last even through a factory reset or does it revert back to original space
Your best choice is a 1TB or higher solid state drive is the option I choose because they run faster and longer than hard disc drives. Try that suggestion, lad.
Does anybody know what the partition labels are? Im talking about the letters they are assigned to?
What if I used an ssd. Would I still have to go to Linux and do this steps to use the ssd as internal hd on Xbox?
Can the old HDD be cloned to a SSD of the same size? I know they are different in how they store data, but the data itself should stay the same...I think. Have you tried this? And, does it work for XBox OneS?
So if I wanted to do this for xbox one x, what are the steps for doing it?
What files do I need for it?
Can you not just copy and paste everything from the orginal hard to the new one, and how does this work with an SSD.
im getting errors in the first line of code.
i entered sudo python ./xboxonehdd.py sdc
and it only creates gputil.pyc and says
"OverflowError: Python int too large to convert to C long"
i cant create the ./mkxboxfs.sh
Thanks for this. It's easy to do. One possible issue. I followed your steps, everything happened the same as yours. Just checked my storage, and it says 364.9GB rather than 800+GB. Is that normal?
Is this Linux method still working? I still am having errors with this. :( I have tried osudt1 and osudt2 but there is now a osudt3. Maybe I am just messing this up :)
Whats good guys , is there a real world differences between the sshd and ssd basically i ve got a 1tb sshd i swapped out of my hp envy . Its been collecting dust for over a year. I do have a 5TB seagate so i don t need storage ,just performance
Everything worked until I got to the last step I copied the command "sudo python ./xboxonehdd.py" and it gives me an error saying "Partition 0 must be EXACTLY 44023414784 bytes!
It is 44024446464 bytes
run ./mkxboxfs.sh to create the correct partitions"
Please help : (
On Windows 7 and above you don't need ImgBurn. Windows Explorer has a built in ISO burning feature.
does the new December update stop this working as i see on ifixit????
no matter what I do, when I start up my xbox with my new hard drive, it goes straight to the preparing console screen and eventually throws an error usually 103 or 200.
hi I did what you said in the video but there two file was not on osudt3 files sosinit.xvd and sostmpl.xvd clice
Can u do a tut on how to find offsets on Peek Poker
How to clone a existing drive on to a larger drive?
I already have a 2tb xbox one. I want migrate everything to a 4tb drive
+MODDED WARFARE i am trying to build a custom xbox one, will this work with custom parts
Can you put all the files needed in zip for me to download please
Mine is not working not sure whats going on. I have tried three different osudt1, 2 and 3 all get some sort of error at boot E101 or E202? I notice Xbox is now using a file that's called OSU1, OSU2, OSU3 are they the same as OSUDT?
did u ever figure it out?
F12 also is a hotkey to change the boot priority
If I keep getting the system error I have to boot it up with a different oS?
can you do the linux install on a vm?
Can this help me out if my hd was broken and i want to replace it?
Could the xbox HDD be cloned? Using a disk coping utility to copy the drive over and then mess with partition sizes.
I have personally tried cloning an XBOX ONE hard drive using Reflect software and it worked fine but you will need to use OSUDT2 or OSUDT3 afterwards but i can confirm it works (i cloned like for like 500GB to 500GB)
I changed hd today to a client I put hd of 1tb the same only recognizes 364gb what can be?
Step 2 in ubuntu terminal and I get "command not found". I tried copy-pasting into the terminal and entering my correct SSD drive name, which in my case was "sdc". The code went as follows: sudo python ./xboxonehdd.py sdc And once I hit enter I get "command not found".
is this still working ? so i could put in a ssd as main harddrive on this way ?
anyone have an issue where the Xbox registers a new 1TB drive as the original 500GB after they got everything to work? I'm not sure if something went wrong with my partition or the Xbox is just trippin..
ok i upgraded y hdd to a 2TB hdd per your tutorial and am having some issues and hoping you can help. the XBOX loads no problem and my dashboard looks like yours but the problem is that it doesn't allow me to sign in nor access any setting of any sort. any ideas?
+Guy Conner try backing up all your game files on your computer, then use the offline factory reset and then re put your files back on your hdd.
+multime198 I've done that and many other trouble shooting tactics... needless to say I just gave up and am using an external... problem solved
cant wait for the xbox one jtag
can you do more emulator videos and maybe homebrew games
I can't seem to get this to work. I don't no if this is to do with newer updates or not can someone help
I also tried osudt3 & the master reset link on the xbox site.
Are the only files you need on the new one the system update files? last time I did that I just ended up with a black screen and nothing happened
That's where mine is right now. Black screen but I noticed if you hold the xbox button the menu still comes up. I need to know where to go from here also.
+multime198 Can anyone help?
PS 4 has already jailbreaked why you not trying to make some videos for it
Question? After doin all this how do I boot windows back up?
Is it possible to use a virtual machine with Linux installed?
Nice Video, thanks for doing what you cant to make it straight forward. Would this work on a SSD and do you know of anyone being successful in using this method on a larger 2TB+ drive?
+Mello Kevt I don't know anyone personally who has installed a drive larger than 2TB. SSD's should work but you need one that's 500GB or larger.
Thanks for the reply. I don't have one yet and I was trying to figure if adding a drive would be better than buying one with a 1tb stock.
+xXModdedWarfareXx shure it must be 500gb or larger? i'd like to use a 250gb ssd.
+Mello Kevt Why? Xbox One nor PS4 can handle the SSD speed, it would be just a small increase in load speed but nothing like using it on a PC.... And they are expensive for just a small boost, it would actually be better to buy a good hybrid drive that can give you 2Tb plus a boost in files you use many times (such as the OS)
Mendyc158. Yes. I found some testing that agrees with what you said. It does sound like a hybrid drive would be the way to go. It looks like the ps4 has some issues with drives larger than 2tb with some games.
