6 members to the Justian Kill Team with Captain OR Sergeant as Leader
Nice application. The miniatures look great. But they still look a bit orange or orange red compared to the art. Maybe a very thinned red glaze to bring it into red a bit more?
Hah! Jokes on you, I already use it!
(for anyone wondering whether or not milanote is just another mid site that is willing to pay people, it can be annoying to start using but really great for fast organisation)
Glass half dead has a good video on kill team justian
I use Milanote pro for work and warhammer projects! Such a killer fitting sponsor man!
Someone else may've mentioned it already, but the Blood Ravens were actually created by Relic (the creators of Dawn of War) specifically for the game. After Dawn of War's success, GW brought them into the canon and expanded on their backstory, with it being heavily implied that they could be formed from Thousand Son's geneseed as they have a higher than average number of psykers in their ranks.
One of the recent Horus Heresy books confirms they’re Imperial Fist successors, *so long as the lineage of that group of marines is indeed the future Blood Ravens*, because there’s no confirmation as to what founding they were part of.
funny....their novels are actually not canon as far as my understanding goes
@@manireathey are a cannon chapter, after Dawn of War GW officially added them to the world. However originally they were made by relic so that they could do whatever they pleased with the chapter without potentially contradicting official lore had.
They actually existed before the games, the Uriel Ventris book Dead Sky Black Sun by Graham McNeil which came out at the same time as the DoW games, had a Blood Raven in it which had the same lore that GW would later add for their official index. The only difference is that the Chapter symbol of the Blood Raven in that book is actually just a Raven's head rather than the full bird and the blood drop, showing that this character's creation pre-dated their DoW release.
Over time I think you've really had a distinctive style of your own emerge, John. The way your miniatures look is recognizable compared to other creators online. I'm a big fan of the look you've developed and I think this video is a great example. Thanks for always hyping me up to keep hobbying!
His style really makes everything look like its standing before a sunset and the cool orange light is reflecting back
I love kill team, being able to finish a project in a reasonable time and try new things is a big win
All that's missing are some nice decals ^^
Really good looking result for 3 days of work!
When it comes to hobby, kill team is right in my sweet spot. I can paint a squad of interesting minis, feel like I'm working towards something, play a fun game and then move on to something with a completely different flavour and can tackle it in a completely different style
100%
Regarding reducing paint on the brush: I use a small artist watercolour pad for my "wipe of" which produces really consistent results which is great. The real benifit is it takes off both pigment and water at the same rate rather then favoring the water which occurs with paper toweling.
Good idea and I wonder what would happen if I used a Wettex dish rag... 🤔
@@KrullMaestaren the wettex is complicated I sued to use one back in the day. if its 'moist' then you put water back into the brush if its dry if takes water out its effect on the pigment is variable. A thin wet sponge pad works batter imo ymmv try em out and see what you think. the water colour pad is were I have settled over time but I do think a thin sponge pad shows promise.
You're like the god of marketing! Stepped from "my airbrush had a little clog, and now I got paint all over my desk" to "if you want to buy any tools I use, just use my link". Love it!
You too can spray paint all over your desk!
Yes sir! Yes I can!
@Ninjon bro don't you know? Tamiya in Japan

You get 6 of the 7 models. I'd recommend dropping the heavy Intercessor for your first few games. He'll be a bit more challenging to run for a newer guy, he is slow (id say too slow) and has heavy so he is more of a piece to be set up for use in turn 2/3.
I play kommandoes and veteran guardsman but I will keep this info in mind when I but the space marine heroes
@Mrcowboyhunter you might need to proxy hard for this team lol. We didn't even get them here in Canada.
Proxy hard? Those are standard marines with fancy names
And i wouldnt just discard the heavy weapons man, as soon as rules drop he will get a piece of equipment that will make him more mobile, turning him into a complete beast
@hydra1plprivate942 i was being a tad dramatic but by hard I was referring to how if someone doesn't have a tone of marines already there's a fair bit of pulling from a few kits. But yeah if someone has an army or a bunch of kits to begin with it's dead easy.
They look great! Thanks for taking the time to paint them. I'm happy for you that you enjoy painting them.
Good for you Ninjon, glad to see you excited to paint a squad. For me, the biggest motivation to "paint another one" is painting minis for my D&D games. Cool looking models add so much fun for my players and that keeps me going in terms of painting.
Love the red of the armor! I’m about to paint a kill team who will be mainly red so your pointers were really useful.
A couple of tips before you play:
1. You can take 6 of the 7 models. You’ll pretty much want to decide between the Heavy Intercessor and the basic Intercessor that didn’t have the grenade.
2. The Heavy Bolter for the Heavy Intercessor is listed is having 4 attack dice while on the Japanese cards they have 5, so people have been playing with 5 dice since it’s thought the 4 dice was a typo.
3. The English cards have no listed tac op archetypes, but the Japanese have seek and destroy and security, so people have been using those.
4. Make sure you read the rules about cover and obscurity really thoroughly. It isn’t hard once you understand how it works, but GW worded those topics really poorly.
Wow, they look amazing! That light source really works.
Btw, Kill Team is a great game, I hope you enjoy it.
Fantastic paint job as always. Welcome to the Kill Team community, hope you'll have an amazing time playing!
It's been an absolute pleasure watching your painting journey over the last few years! These minies look absolutely insane! Keep it up! 🔥
+1 For Michigan Toy Soldier. I visited while on vacation this summer. Amazing hobby store! Great staff and fully stocked!
Edge highlighting is my Achilles heel. I’ve watched so many videos and I just can’t work out how your paint comes off your brush so consistently down the whole stroke, and how you can do multiple strokes with the same load of brush and still have consistent paint coming off. Must be wizardry or atleast a pact with some sort of dark entity. Love your videos man.
It's paint consistency. If it's not thin enough, it'll behave how you describe, where you run/dry out really quickly. If it's too thin, you lose control of the paint and it makes your edge highlights messy.
I can't consistently get the right consistency every time, since it can vary by brand and even paint color, but when you do you'll know it because it feels like it should. You don't realize it, but until you can consistently get your paints thinned properly, you're fighting an uphill battle. Once you have control, you'll find techniques are more doable.
Your Videos get better and better Jon, it is so much fun watching you evolve ✌🏻
Love the video, models look great as usual! Kill team is a great game, and the scene in Minnesota (particularly the twin cities) is really strong and vibrant
KT really is where its at. Its what got me back into the hobby, and my 40f friends are all loving it, some more than 10th even.
awesome sons of magnus too
Fantastic paint job! Love the red armor, the way you highlight with orange and the brown and skin details. The only thing that comes to my mind is maybe the Blood Ravens should have a little bit darker red than the Blood Angels. I always thought (lore-wise) that their armor was akin to that of the World Bearers. But then again, this is a random thought because I love what you did with those guys!
Those look great. I really liked the way the dark red and purple served so well for shadows on the models. That's a very handy technique.
Wow they came out great, Love the look of the models!!!
These are awesome! I love the Blood Ravens colours, they've always been a chapter I've considered painting. At the end of the video, I was thinking "But Jon, where is the sweet ass Blood Ravens iconography on their shoulders?" and then I remembered they don't make transfers for them, and doing that icon by hand seven times would suck.
I’ve started painting mine recently, and got some amazing blood ravens transfer from the mighty brush, it’s really worth it
From the thumbnail, I thought you were painting old school Blood Angels...
There's a stylized and simplified version of their logo in old Index Astartes. This logo can be seen in DoW2 games in some cutscenes, namely the final cutscene of DoW2 original campaign. It's not that hard to paint, I've painted a lot of them and learned to paint them really fast.
2:17 All these awesome paint jobs, and I'm in awe that you got the drill bit centered on the muzzle.
Stunning work Jon.
They look awesome. Very nice to see you paint for a (skirmish) game. Really looking forward to seeing you paint a Warcry warband! 😊🙏🤞
Yeah, Blood Raves! Let’s go!
Now they even got a Ninjon video to add to their collection of chapter relics.
John at 13:28 "i'm gonna paint the knee as a nipple" XD
Kill team is cool, a really interesting game. Painting figures to play with is exactly what drives me. Enjoy the game!
Honestly, your table top ready is unbelievable
These look incredible. Its really cool to hear you talk about gaming. Have fun!
When you said black and red marines, I thought of Flesh Tearers 😂
Very nice results! I really like the yellow highlights on the armor and have to remember to use that in my artings, as well.
They look great!
Nice work! Love seeing the progress of something you what to use ❤🎉
Thank you Jon, really needed this vid!
Let's gooooo, I'd love to see you get more into the skirmish game scene. The team looks great!
My favorite way to paint red space marines is to bring it up to pink with the highlights and then glaze it back down to bright red with a glaze.
The leader's left arm flexible undersuit at the elbow joint is still red. Traditionally, it is black, some people might think you have forgotten to paint it.
Great vid!!! Thanks!!!
Such satisfying color scheme and highlights, awesome!
Love the Blood Ravens, one of my favorite loyalist chapters. Space Wolfs taking the top spot.
Furry
Thanks for sharing we enjoy painting when the end goal is for Battle, we must look our best on the field.
Great to see you getting into Kill Team, it’s both a great size to play and hobby at 🤘looking forward to more KT content!
This video came out just in time, I got the Warhammer Underworlds starter set just yesterday and can't wait to build it. I've painted over 130 minis so far, and never used a single one of them (I play D&D online since the pandemic and haven't finished my wargaming board yet to play wargames), so I'm extremely excited to have a full box with the board, dice, cards, and more minis to paint. Now all I need is to get someone over to play with lol
fabulous stuff, great job!
That dark red base colour for the skin tone looks amazing ❤
The purple glazed into the cream shoulder pads looks so good. I'm currently working on an arbites (palanite) killteam using purple as the midtone building to a pale yellow highlight and it's one of my favorite combos.
Those came out great! Thanks for the inspiration to paint!
This is a great video, thanks for showing your tricks of the trade. Keep it up ang all the best to you!
Looks epic! Great job!
Great looking paint job as always.
They're bloody good Jon, nice one!
Hey, I go to Michigan Toy Soldier all the time now. They are a solid shop with so much in stock and I'm glad that you're giving them a boost.
I always love the outtakes at the end
'Slay the Gray' - that is an inspiring quote - love it 🙂
Great work - I actually painted a Blood Raven army years ago. Many years. I might have missed it in the video but I noticed the ribbed undersuit parts (like in the elbow joints) aren’t painted differently. However: no big deal. I also really like that basing look.
Honestly these are some of the best looking marines I have ever seen
Not sure if this is helpful, but the primer color you mixed up is really damn close to Vallejo Hull Red, which you can get as a primer color. I prefer using this rather than black primer when I want to keep more warmth in the shadows of my models.
Nice! Been missing videos like this, great job!
really loved this my man, that red is so poppy, absolutely fantastic
Gads those are beautiful. I plan on starting a Votann army soon, so I really enjoyed seeing how you did the red. Thank you!
@Ninjon, if I'm not mistaken you live in Minnesota like me. I found a fun place not too far of a drive for me, The Forge in Chaska. Now I have no affiliation with this place other than the fact that it is now where I do most of my playing and purchasing for Warhammer 40k. I've never been into Age of Sigmar, though I think the minis are excellent, but from what I have heard from some of the other people at The Forge they have a pretty active AOS group there. Just thought you may want to check it out.
Over the summer, me and my friend got a killteam box as our first venture into tabletop gaming. It was a wonderful introduction to the hobby! Not too daunting to paint, and not too daunting to play.
loving that Jon is watching one of Scott's videos while he builds the minis
Amazing work as always!
Glad to see you joining up Kill Team! Have fun! I really enjoyed your video.
"I'm giving myself three full days to paint these" - Meanwhile it takes me almost three weeks to batch paint a unit of Termagants.
First Warhammer army/space marine army painting video that actually makes me want to play Warhammer. Those models look amazing!
They look amazing! 👌
They look unreal mate!
I love painting Blood Ravens, there so fun to paint
I find having a game gives the models a purpose, and painting for this purpose feels more special than just painting for paintings sake
Love Kill Team. Small model count, price and time needed. Simple easy to pick up, hard to master rules. Ive played it with so many new players. Better than full fat W40K imho.
These minis look amazing ❤
Looks great as usual. Blood Angels' Death Company would have been another option to paint. Mostly black, but quite a bit more red than the Ravens. Plus they're all victims of the 'Black Rage' turning them into 9 foot tall bloodthirsty-psychopaths(literally), which is always fun. Basically Khorne Berserkers for the "good guys".
Great video!
Outstanding!
Great job on the Blood Ravens
great job !!!
i think just watching john paint has helped me improve because i just did nmm for the first time
Damn, Jon... you're getting really good. Those look fantastic.
Love that you painted these and might be getting into kill team.
My Slay the Gray t-shirt just landed in Ireland. Cheers.
Pretty fuggin cool approach to the leather 🤘
the blood ravens scheme looks great! I recently picked up the Strike force Justian kits and kitbashed them to be alpha legion infiltrating Salamanders.
And here I am...having to paint 132 minis. 7 would be the dream... :D
Thanks for recommending the wowstick! I bought one after watching your video, and I'm loving this thing! It's so easy to use, and the bits that come with it are perfect for our hobby.
Welcome to Kill Team! I've been chipping away at getting an actual Sisters army put together for probably 2 years now (and the recent points nerf knocked me down to around 1000 pts if I field everything). In the meantime, though, Kill Team is the game I play to keep my hobby motivation up. Something that reminds me that, yes, I can in fact put these things on the table.
Jon thats awesome bro didnt know you was getting into kt happy for my guy. Keep up the killer paint jobs man. Would love to see more kt paint videos if you would. Have a good one brotha.
Hi Jon, wonderful job and seems like you really enjoied it, I'm really amazed by your job thank you
Man, I really like the orangish highlights - it suggests the team is in an environment where the light is in a different spectrum. Great job, and I love it every time you say you are painting for self satisfaction rather than speed painting.
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
really nice painting. Especially, I like the face of the captain
Great paintjob, great technique and great tips, as always. Great job, hope the awesome paintjob ensured your victory! :)
Nice squad Jon!
I agree, paint to get WAR ON THE TABLE!!!
I paint & play ASOIAF miniatures game & enjoy painting all the factions & playing the game.
Alway enjoy your videos!! Thank you for all the tips & encouragement.
These look great. Awesome. Blood Ravens are fab.
Nailed it...again!
